NEW BEGINNINGS
As the official start of the new Chamber year, October often brings with it a number of changes. This year is no different.
I’m delighted to welcome our new Chairman of the Board, Tom Sullivan. Tommy, who is President and Owner of Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc., Funeral Homes and the
Hogan Funeral Home, has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2007. As our Chairman, he brings an extraordinary level of experience and incredible commitment, not only to the business community, but to the entire community in general.
My deepest thanks go to outgoing Chairman Charlie Milich, who, in 2011, assumed leadership of the Chamber under very difficult circumstances, following the untimely death of Dave Cocks. Charlie then spent the following two years guiding the Chamber through some of the toughest economic times in our history. Your commitment, leadership and dedication are very much appreciated, Charlie.
A big, hearty welcome to the five new members of our Board. It’s always so exciting to bring new faces and fresh energy onto the Board, and I’m confident that Pete, David, Paul, Linda and Jean will contribute enormously to our mission of leading the way “in creating and supporting an environment in which business will succeed and the quality of life is enhanced.”
Excitement is also in the air as we launch our great new rewards program, Orange Advantage, and after you read the article on the front page, you’ll understand why. I believe Orange Advantage truly is the ultimate buy local program, and I’m thrilled about the increased business that our O/A member merchants are expected to see.
On that note, please join me in kicking off our new year with renewed enthusiasm, positive energy and a commitment to doing all we can to create a truly vibrant business community. We have all the tools. We just need to put them to work.

BUSINESS INSIDER
By Cynthia Marsh-Croll
Cynthia Marsh-Croll is Manager of the Chamber’s Entrepreneurial Assistance Program, and can be reached at 845-457-9700 or [email protected].
In the past we have been taught to work on our weaknesses. Psychological research has discovered that this formula will give you marginal success at best. Operating to your strengths and doing what you do best is how to be successful. But that is only part of the mix. The important piece is to delegate your weaknesses. In fact, when you delegate to someone who does something better, faster and more efficient than you, it becomes a strength.
As business owners, we need to focus our time on revenue-producing activities. In other words, those tasks and projects that will help us turn our time and efforts into dollars. However someone has to get the general administrative and bookkeeping done. And when you are a small business, it is the person who also has to network, do sales calls, provide the product/service and then be customer service. These are a lot of hats to wear. To help with this dilemma, your business can take the official leap to the next level and hire a virtual assistant (VA).
Here are some things to consider when outsourcing your office functions:
• Figure out what you do best and consider delegating the rest.
• Are there structures and procedures in place to make it work?
• Will outsourcing affect customer perception of your business?
• Get feedback about customer perceptions and reactions.
• Don’t assume that decreasing labor costs will always provide big savings!
• Weigh efficiency against effectiveness. Seeking greater efficiency is a bad idea if it reduces your ability to meet customer and quality standards.
Visit these websites for information on securing a VA: Alliance for Virtual Businesses www.AllianceforVirtualBiz.com, The International Association of Administrative Professionals www.iaap-hq.org, Global Association of Virtual Assistants (GAVA) www.gava.org and International Virtual Assistants Association (IVAA) www.ivaa.org
For a business to grow and prosper, effective delegation is key. Without it, you will not grow. Furthermore, without the right team, you cannot succeed to your full potential. Determine what your core competencies are, develop policies and procedures and then examine where you can shift time and energy to focus on growing the business. Do you what you do best and delegate the rest!

WORKSITE WEllNESS PROGRAMS: GOOD FOR THE HEART OF BUSINESS
Business owners: are your employees sitting in front of a computer all day, sitting through back-to-back meetings, conference calls, working late, racing against deadlines and managing more priorities with fewer staff? If so, they might be on a collision course with serious illness. All that sitting, inactivity and stress can take a toll on employee health. And that takes a toll on the bottom line.
The American Heart Association encourages employers to implement wellness initiatives at the workplace to help save lives from heart disease and stroke, the nation’s number one and four killers. Wellness programs can make an impact on the nation’s rising obesity rates, sedentary behavior and increasing prevalence of chronic disease.
Chronic illnesses affect more than a third of working-age Americans and the costs associated with chronic diseases account for approximately 75 percent of the nation’s annual health care costs.
Through their Fit-Friendly Worksites program, the American Heart Association recognizes employers for creating a culture of wellness in the workplace. They reward companies for their progressive leadership and highlight their concern for their staff.
To create a healthier worksite, employers can make simple changes like creating walking routes, using stand-up workstations, promoting walking programs, creating online newsletters and tracking tools to motivate employees. Something as simple as allowing staff to wear athletic shoes in the workplace on designated “sneaker days” can give them greater access to physical activity.
The AHA recommends a comprehensive program that includes tobacco cessation and prevention, physical activity, stress management/reduction, early detection/screening, nutrition education, weight management, and cardiovascular disease prevention.
Employers can enlist the free Fit Friendly Worksites program resources, phone apps and tools like the Nutrition and Physical Activity Tracker to create a healthier workplace environment online at www.heart.org/activitytracker.
Worksite wellness programs can increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, lower turnover and reduce healthcare costs. Besides benefiting companies, a healthier workplace helps employees live healthier, longer lives. To learn more or apply online, visit http://ffc.heart.org or call 845-905-2121.

the card at a participating O/A business, points are accumulated that will be converted to a cash value that can be used only at O/A participating businesses. To date, more than 60 merchants have signed up as O/A merchants and anywhere from five to 10 additional businesses are joining each week. (See list of participating merchants as of October 1 on the following page).
Scott Goren and Becky Vanderloop, owners of SB Merchant Services, are handling the Orange Advantage program for the Chamber. The idea has been in the planning stages for several years, but the technology necessary to administer the program properly has only recently become available, said Goren.
“Orange Advantage cardholders will earn valuable rewards while supporting their friends and neighbors in business,” Goren explained. “One of the great things about this program is that small businesses can benefit from a large rewards program. Participating merchants will be able to attract new customers – from throughout Orange County and beyond – and reward those customers for loyalty and keep them coming back.”
“The Orange Advantage Rewards Program promotes commitment to community, so as an independent business owner, I was overjoyed at the chance to support small businesses,” said Niki Jones, Founder and CEO of Niki Jones Agency.
Don't have a card yet? No problem, just go to the website, www.OrangeAdvantageNY.com, put in your information and a card will sent to you immediately. O/A cards are also available at the Chamber Business Center in Montgomery.

O/A cardholders can also check their points online.

Do your holiday shopping right here in the Hudson Valley: specifically in Warwick and Sugar Loaf on Saturday, November 23.
The OC Chamber, in cooperation with the Warwick Valley and Sugar Loaf chambers, is hosting a bus trip from the Chamber Business Center in Montgomery to Warwick and Sugar Loaf.
We’ll meet at our 30 Scott’s Corners Drive headquarters, enjoy a continental breakfast and board the bus (provided by Rolling V) around 9:00 a.m.
First stop is Warwick, where we’ll be met by our friends from the Warwick Chamber and the Warwick Merchants Guild who will hand out goody bags complete with coupons from select Warwick merchants. The town will be decorated for the holidays and that sight alone will be worth the trip.
After everyone enjoys lunch (there are 45 eateries in Warwick!), we’ll return to the bus and head for nearby Sugar Loaf for shopping at some of the most unique stores you’ll find anywhere. The plan is to leave Sugar Loaf around 5:00 p.m. for the trip back to Montgomery.
All this is for just $22 per person and includes the breakfast at the Chamber. Space is limited, so don’t delay. Reservation deadline is November 15.
Call Andrea now at 845-457-9700 or email [email protected]. Payment is required in advance.

DocuWare Corporation, a subsidiary of the DocuWare Group, a global leader in the technology field of Enterprise Content Management (ECM), has reason to celebrate a first year anniversary in their new office space at Stewart International Airport in Orange County. Located in the New York International Plaza just above the Orange County Industrial Development Agency’s Business Accelerator, in New Windsor, DocuWare recently announced acquisition of Branford, CT-based Westbrook Technologies, Inc. Westbrook is an ECM specialist with a strong customer base in North America.
Westbrook, like DocuWare, is one of the early pioneers in the market for document imaging and document management. Starting in the early 90s with products like Imagic and Filemagic, Westbrook is now a leading provider with its Fortis and Fortis Blue solutions. Westbrook Technologies will operate as a subsidiary of DocuWare Corp. The acquisition is a further
step for the DocuWare Group to substantiate its position as the leading, global ECM vendor for small and mid-sized companies.
The parent company, DocuWare GmbH, was founded in 1988 and is headquartered just outside of Munich, Germany. Today there are five DocuWare operating companies throughout the world. Besides DocuWare Corp. which covers North and South America, there are DocuWare operating companies in Germany, UK, France and Spain. In 2012, Morgan Stanley became an investor to support the company’s growth path.
DocuWare, one of the premier software companies in the Hudson Valley, provides a suite of document management software products under the DocuWare name that can be either cloud based or on premise. DocuWare enables any size organization, in any industry, to unlock the valuable knowledge contained in their documents. Regardless of format or source of these documents, DocuWare is able to automate business processes and workflows by electronically routing, managing and sharing documents. Documents are readily available,
where and when needed; one search quickly finds all documents in any business transaction.
Greg Schloemer, President of DocuWare Corp., explained that since 2010, DocuWare Corp. has doubled its footprint in Orange County in both office space and number of employees. For the last five years, DocuWare has been enjoying double digit growth.
The addition of Westbrook Technologies to the DocuWare Group will certainly help to fuel future growth.
The combination of both companies adds more than 1,500 Westbrook customers to an already sizable base of over 10,000 DocuWare customers with more than 100,000 users in over 70 countries and in 16 languages. It also expands DocuWare’s 500+ strong network of Authorized DocuWare Partners by adding over 40 experienced Westbrook resellers.
Because DocuWare requires all their solution resellers to be recertified or trained every year, it brings in over 1,000 nights of visitors for the local economy. This is in addition to frequently hosting international visitors in New Windsor.
Schloemer went on to explain that besides a great product and dedicated resellers, the business climate in Orange County is a huge plus for success. County Executive Ed Diana was instrumental in keeping DocuWare in the area when it was looking to expand. Couple the pro-business administration with an extremely strong Chamber of Commerce and it is a win-win for DocuWare and the local economy.

Affordable Care Act Explained Not only does Orange Benefits Partners (OBP) handle the Chamber’s health insurance program, two OBP professionals have become the local go-to people for helping businesses and individuals make sense of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.”
Debra Johnson, Executive Vice President for William A. Smith & Son Insurance, which administers OBP on behalf of the Chamber, and Larry Johnson, Vice President of Business Development for WAS, were on hand at this year’s EXPO, meeting with a steady flow of visitors to our Affordable Care Act Help Center. During EXPO, the local media discovered that Debbie and Larry truly are ACA experts and enlisted them for a series of articles in the Times Herald-Record, as well as for a call-in help line.
We’re grateful to Debbie and Larry for helping not only our members, but the entire community in understanding and dealing with a very complex issue. If you have questions about the ACA or OBP, call 845-725-7396.
