Information Technology

Just as the semiconductor industry spearheaded major

technological advances in the 20th century, we might

be witnessing the dawn of the photonic age now, af-

ter the demise of the electronic age. Today, photonics

stands where electronics stood prior to the invention of

the transistor.

The photon has replaced the electron as the central

technological medium. LEONI firmly backs photonics as

one of the 21st century‘s key technologies.

It all starts with the developement of solutions.

We develop and manufacture tailor-made, high-quality

products for each individual customer and for every specific

application – prototypes as well as system solutions.

With a view to enhancing the quality and design of our

products, we have teamed up with a number of renowned

scientific institutions to conduct cutting-edge research

in materials science and technology development. Basic

research and practical relevance have never been so closely

interconnected.

Glass and silica fibers for fiber-optic waveguides are

drawn from a preform made of high-purity optical glass or

fused silica with different core and cladding materials. We

produce a wide range of customized IR and UV-enhanced

preforms.

We manufacture multimode fibers (glass or silica) with

core diameters from 10µm to 2000µm and with different

numerical apertures, coatings and jackets. Based on stan-

dard and special fibers (glass, silica, POF, PCF), we produce

customized cables and hybrid cables with electrical and

optical conductors.

LEONI fabricates complete optical fiber systems from

fiber-optic cables, laser probes and special optical com-

ponents for industrial, medical and scientific applications.

Our comprehensive product range includes fiber-optic

cable assemblies based on different fibers made of glass,

silica or plastics of different lengths; fiber bundles; special

connector systems; and optical switches and splitters

– we offer you a unique portfolio of more than

10,000 different products.

New Quality Milestone

Cooperation is important, as is initiative. For the

purpose of qualifying and optimizing optical high-per-

formance fibers, LEONI – in cooperation with partners in

materials research – has succeeded in setting up

uniform international standards for the greater part of

the optical fiber product range. In this way, we have

achieved continuous improvements in product quality

and error prevention.

We put all our expertise at your service in order to

optimize our fibers. As our customer, this provides you

with a valuable advantage, particularly in the case of

new developments for your specific applications.

To satisfy markets means not only to make price

and marketing promises but also to create facts

by developing innovative products with the help

of new technologies.

Alternative fibers, intelligent components.

The future has just begun.

Photonic Crystal Fibers

Fiber Optics – as the first German fiber producer –

has elaborated the preparation technology for the

manufacture of photonic crystal fibers and has

established it in Germay as a future technology.

Fiber-Optic System Components

Our product design does not end with the fiber, systems

require more: LEONI’s fiber-optic switches are based on a

patented micro-mechanic/micro-optic design and can be

utilized over a broad wavelength range (VIS – IR). LEONI’s

splitters (FTTX) are based on planar optical waveguide

technology, offering high performance and long-term

stability. Our fiber arrays are one or two-dimensional,

and we use fibers with diameters ranging from 9 µm to

800 µm.

Special Optical Fiber with Square-Shaped Core

The new square core geometry has opened up an array of

new applications in laser-based materials processing.

When a beam with circular beam geometry is launched

into a fiber, the beam emanating from the other end has a

square and highly homogeneous beam profile.

These fibers render favorable results in combination with

diode lasers, as high coupling efficiencies are achieved.

We produce square fibers with core edge lengths

between 400µm and 1000µm and numerical apertures

between 0.1 and 0.22. They are silicone-coated by default.

Other coating materials are available upon request.

Optical waveguide technology by LEONI at lunar missions.

Mission possible.

SMART 1 was the first space probe commissioned by the

European Space Agency ESA, to successfully research the

lunar surface from Sept. 28, 2003 to Sept. 3, 2006. Aboard it

carried the NIR spectrometer SIR, which spectrally analyzed

the light reflected by the moon, for the first time allowing a

general analysis of the lunar surface composition.

SIR had been designed in cooperation with ZEISS by the Max

Planck Institute for Solar System Research. The spectrometer

used in the probe featured a silica-based fiber-optic cable

made by LEONI, with a particularly high transmission in the

near-infrared range.

SIR, which weighed a mere 2kg, was the first near-infrared

spectrometer to achieve continuous measurement of the

sunlight reflected by different minerals on the lunar surface

in the wavelength range between 0.8µm and 2.4µm even on

the far side of the moon, without any technical downtimes.

And ESA has once again taken LEONI‘s expertise on board for

the first indian lunar mission CHANDRAYAAN launched in

October 2008. LEONI has enhanced its optical fiber design

for the IR spectrometer in order to optimize signal detection.

In the new design, the input end face of the fiber allows for

maximum concentration of incident light. By employing

tapered fibers (optical funnel), the signal is directed onto a

smaller detection surface within the spectrometer.
