■ INTRODUCTION

In the wake of drastic spending cuts heralded by the Comprehensive Spending Review, the coalition government has made it clear that it expects the private sector to be the main driver of economic growth in 2011 and beyond.

While there is no doubt that the region’s fi rms are up to the challenge, we realise that now more than ever you need continued support and a strong voice representing your interests. That’s where the Chamber comes in.

Over the past few months we have been working hard on a number of behind-the-scenes improvements designed to improve communication with our members and offer additional benefi ts.

Our website – www.wcnwchamber.org.uk – has been re-launched (read more about this on page 5) and we have brought in specialist training and events co-ordinators to enhance our offering in an area that we know is extremely important to our members.

We take our role as the leading lobbying body for businesses in the region seriously, and that’s why we have also recently launched a media campaign to boost the public profi le of the Chamber and our members.

The newly-formed Business Council, which held its second meeting in October, goes from strength to strength. The council is the only forum of its kind where private and public sector bosses from West Cheshire and North Wales can sit round the table to share ideas and infl uence decisions affecting the prosperity of the area.

We now have a robust board of directors in place that understands your priorities. I myself have been with the Chamber for more than six months, and during that time have been fortunate enough to meet many members and learn about the extensive talent bases and innovations taking place within them.

David Cameron says the coalition’s agenda will be the most “pro-business, pro-growth and pro-jobs”

of any government in history. It remains to be seen whether the coalition can live up to that promise, but what is clear is that West Cheshire and North Wales businesses are well placed to thrive despite the new ‘age of austerity.’

I believe that the Chamber and its members can look forward to 2011 with confi dence.

On October 1st this year the Equality Act 2010 came into force. The Act, which combined and replaced nine laws and more than one hundred other measures introduced piecemeal fashion since the seventies, was the single largest piece of discrimination legislation this country has seen.

Whilst the purpose of the Act was “to strengthen protection, advance equality and de-clutter the law”, in reality it has presented an administration nightmare, not just for those running businesses but also for Clubs, Societies and other organisations.

Finding time to get a handle just on the various defi nitions of ‘Discrimination’ within the Act has been bad enough for those whose everyday job is outside the legal sector. Worse is the onerous task of having to read through every Policy, Procedure and Contract in the organisation to ensure there are no exclusions that could be viewed as discriminating.

As always with the introduction of new legislation there follows a bombardment of helpful companies offering to take care of changes within your organisation for what, in some cases, turns out to be quite considerable cost. And invariably much of the service offered is beyond what you actually require.

It was with this in mind that when the Equality 2010 Act came into force Wrexham law fi rm, GHP Legal, decided to offer a bespoke service for Businesses, Clubs and other organisations that have little experience of legislation.

Built around the client’s specifi c needs the service aims to check that all processes, procedures and contracts within an organisation are compliant. This could entail an employment law expert visiting your offi ces to check through paperwork, or you simply emailing a contract to them for checking.

GHP Legal Partner, Robert Williams states “the Act is so complex, seeking legal compliance advice now may prevent a costly case against you in the future.”

The Chamber has re-launched its website to make it more user-friendly.

The new and improved site – www.wcnwchamber.org.uk – is equipped with an RSS feed feature which means members can sign up to receive all the latest Chamber news straight to their desktop.

The revamped site gives easier access to events and training information, campaigns, offers, and the benefi ts that come with Chamber membership. The site was designed and built by Cheshire fi rm Mavada, and further additions and improvements are continuing to be made.

We are also embarking on a media campaign as part of our role as the key lobbying organisation for business in the region. It will help the Chamber further establish itself as the leading champion of the private sector locally, thereby ensuring that our members’ interests

are represented in the best way to opinion formers and decision makers.

Our e-newsletter has been revamped and is now delivered to your inbox once a month. The easy-to-read bulletin keeps you up to the date with all the latest headlines, offers and events – ensuring you never miss out.

The e-newsletters have been re-designed to allow our busy members quickly to scroll down and click on the stories that matter to them. Additional one-off bulletins about major news stories or special offers will also be distributed on an ad-hoc basis.

Influential business leaders from across Cheshire have come together to discuss some of the region’s key economic issues and strategies to help ensure its future prosperity

Heads of businesses, universities and other public sector organisations in the county gathered for the second meeting of West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce’s Business Council.

The business council is a new strategic body set up by the chamber. Its objective is to seize economic opportunities and resolve key business issues affecting chamber members and the wider business community.

The council is the only forum of its kind for the region where private and public sector bosses can sit round the table and share ideas and influence decisions affecting the prosperity of the area.

Chamber members and other businesses can apply to the business council for a slot at a meeting to make their case about a problem or an opportunity and seek its support.

Colin Brew, general manager of West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are really encouraged by the level of enthusiasm for the business council. Despite it only being our second meeting, we had a good turnout and a wide range of topics was discussed.

“Already, a number of matters have been adopted by the business council for its support.

“Never has such a forum been more important than now, with the economy still in a fragile state and continuing concern about the impact

of the implementation of the Government’s spending review.”

Colin added: “Businesses are welcome to bring their own ideas and issues to the meetings. We hope they seize the opportunity as it gives them unrivalled access to leading decision-makers and influencers in the region.”

Those attending the meeting at the University of Chester’s Kingsway campus, included Steve Robinson, chief executive of Cheshire West and Chester County Council, Aiden Manley, managing director of Cheshire & Warrington Enterprise Commission; Prof Phil Harris, Executive Dean at the University of Chester’s Faculty of Business; Rita Waters, Chief Executive of Chester Renaissance and Sarah Mogel, Principal of West Cheshire College.

Issues discussed included:

Apprenticeships and how small- and medium-sized businesses can benefit by selecting young people with the skills they need

The introduction of Local Enterprise Partnerships and opportunities for the private sector

Plans to increase employment opportunities in three key business parks Deeside and how organisations can work together to improve the area

The council also gave its support to a managing director who asked it for help in speeding up resolution of a planning policy issue that threatened to cause a business to relocate from the region.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 12th May 2011 in St Asaph, north Wales.

Anyone seeking to request support from the council should contact the chamber in advance by phoning 01244 669988 or visit www.wcnwchamber.org.uk

DrivingMonitor is a web-based fleet risk management tool that uses the latest web technologies to assess drivers’ competency levels, and help meet company’s health and safety duty of care obligations.

This complete online solution offers a viable alternative to assessing drivers on the road. This technology in turn leads to a decrease in carbon omissions, which are further decreased by offering e-learning for those drivers who are highlighted as requiring further training, instead of automatically providing on road training.

As health and safety at work and duty of care on the roads are two important areas which all fleet managers need to deal with, it is important that firms assess their drivers’ competency and provide training where necessary. Failure to do so could find directors in court facing serious charges.

This unique suite of tools will give you a valuable insight into the risk levels of your company drivers, and will help you implement a strategy to minimise accidents and reduce insurance premiums. Drivers are tested for their hazard perception, driving theory, attitude and Highway Code knowledge using an interactive driving training tool.

Managers can log on to the company’s website at www.driving-monitor.com for a free demo before buying and there’s also a free guide to download offering top safety tips.

AROUND 100 guests gathered in Chester for one of the biggest events in the regional business scene’s social calendar.

The West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce annual dinner took place at the Chester Grosvenor Hotel and Spa on Friday evening (Sept 24).

The black-tie event involved a drinks reception followed by a three-course meal.

Paul Smith, head coach of the Cheshire Jets basketball team, delivered a keynote speech. Attendees included Chester MP Stephen Mosley and John Newton Jones, managing director of Snowdonia Cheese

and chairman of West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce.

Colin Brew, the chamber’s general manager, described the dinner as a huge success and thanked all of the guests for attending.

SMALL firms across North Wales/Cheshire can help keep the region’s economy afloat in the face of looming government spending cuts, according to a leading business organisation.

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce believes small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will play an increasingly vital role in creating jobs and growth following the coalition’s comprehensive spending review on October 20, which is widely expected to result in public sector job cuts.

However, Chamber bosses have warned that banks must begin offering accessible and affordable credit if SMEs are to thrive. The warning comes after latest Bank of England figures revealed that lending to small businesses across the country fell for the fifth month in a row in July.

Colin Brew, general manager of West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, said: “With public sector cutbacks on the way, the onus is well and truly on the private sector to help avoid a double-dip recession.

“I have no doubt that the private sector is up to

the challenge, but two years after the financial crisis the lack of affordable finance remains the principal obstacle to growth.”

Business secretary Vince Cable told the recent Liberal Democrat conference in Liverpool that there was a ‘compelling case’ for new taxes on banks that fail to lend to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Mr Brew welcomed the comments, but that added that the problem was more complicated than a straightforward ‘refusal’ to lend.

He said: “Many of our members – especially smaller firms – have been offered credit but only at extortionate and unaffordable repayment rates. It’s overly simplistic to say that banks simply aren’t lending; they are offering companies loans but the onerous interest rates and terms and conditions put the deal beyond the reach of many. They simply can’t afford to pay it back.”

Mr Brew added that another problem was the length of time it can take for loan applications to be processed.

“In the pre-credit crunch days a business owner could walk into the bank, apply for a loan and have it approved by the manager there and then. Increasingly what were previously routine applications have to be sent to head office for approval, which can cause significant delays. By the time the application has been approved, the business opportunity has all too often gone.”

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce represents 90,000 employees across the region, and its members range from large corporate PLCs to owner-managed businesses in a range of sectors.

Commenting on the coalition government’s plan to reduce the budget deficit, Mr Brew said that while he supported the focus on spending cuts as opposed to tax rises, austerity measures must be accompanied by support for businesses to enable them to deliver growth and create jobs. A key feature of this support should be a reduction in red tape for start-ups and smaller companies, he said.

Region’s small firms can fuel growth with banks’ help

SMALL fi rms across Cheshire and North Wales are needlessly forking out up to £3,000 a year struggling to keep up with complex employment and HR law, a business organisation has warned.

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce says fl edgling companies in the region are effectively burning money by going to specialist providers for their employment law services.

Colin Brew, general manager at West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, said: “Often when entrepreneurs start up their own business they can feel overwhelmed by all the red tape involved, and one area especially that causes confusion is employment law and HR (human resources).

“Whether it’s drawing up contracts for staff or making sure you have a proper grievance procedure in place, it can be a minefi eld and it’s very diffi cult to know about all the different hoops to jump through.

“Employment law is a very fast-moving area and new legislation is coming in all the time, so it’s important to keep up to date. Often you can fi nd the goalposts have moved overnight without you even realising.

“Many small business owners feel they have no option but to shell out £2,000-£3,000 a year with an employment law specialist, which is an awful lot of money – especially if you’re just

starting out and trying to get your business off the ground.”

Headquartered in Chester, West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce represents 90,000 employees across the region, stretching from Vale Royal in Cheshire to Gwynedd and Anglesey in north west Wales.

One benefi t of Chamber membership, which costs as little as £150 a year, is a HR package very similar to that which can cost small fi rms up to £3,000 annually if they go directly to a specialist provider.

The Chamber package includes unlimited access to 24/7 advice line, a compliant contract of employment, an employee handbook including a grievance and disciplinary procedure, and a health and safety policy offering access to more than 150 downloadable policies, forms, documents, letters, templates and fact sheets.

Mr Brew added: “All companies are looking to make savings where they can at the moment and very few of us can afford to spend thousands of pounds without good reason.

“Employment law and HR really is one of those areas that can eat up your profi ts while your back is turned, especially if you use one of the big specialist fi rms and go in for the full package.

“Our members get the same benefi ts at a massively discounted rate, and this is just one of the ways in which we are helping local businesses thrive at what is still a very challenging time.”

Receiving a communication headed with the words “Without Prejudice” can be disconcerting, particularly when parties are trying to resolve a dispute with another party. The reality is that many people use the term “without prejudice” to imply the threat of litigation without fully understanding what it means.

So what does it mean? Introduced more than 100 years ago, the rule aims to encourage parties involved in a dispute to reach an out of court settlement. By stating “Without Prejudice,” negotiations can be entered into openly and potentially without the fear of anything that is said during the negotiations being used in evidence at a trial, should the negotiations fail.

However, just having “Without Prejudice” on a communication is not suffi cient for this rule to apply. There are two elements that must be present. Firstly, there must be a dispute. Legal proceedings need not have commenced for ‘Without Prejudice’ to apply, there need only be a case that could result in litigation, if settlement is not reached. Secondly the content of the communication must be a genuine attempt to settle the dispute.

Simply including the words ‘Without Prejudice’ in a communication will not prevent the content from being admissible in Court if the document is not a genuine attempt to resolve the dispute. Also the Court will often take into consideration ‘Without Prejudice’ communications when assessing an award for costs against a party or where there is a dispute as to the terms of any settlement agreement which was agreed on a without prejudice basis.

If used correctly the term ‘Without Prejudice’ can be an effective way for parties to protect themselves and their businesses whilst saving time and costs by settling disputes. However it should never be far from the mind of any author of any ‘Without Prejudice’ communication that the content of such documents could eventually end up before a Court to consider.

More than £375million has been invested across the region over the past two years by the Northwest European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).Managed by the Northwest Regional Development Agency, the latest research shows that the projects and programmes supported by ERDF, when matured, will:

Create 5,790 businesses

Create 39,082 jobs

Safeguard 22,684 jobs

The fi rst ERDF project contracted in September 2008 was £3million for improvements around Liverpool’s Lime Street station.

While Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire and Cumbria have all been granted investment for projects specifi cally within their areas, businesses and communities have also benefi ted from the 46 ERDF-funded programmes operating across the entire region.

The Government has announced a public-private joint venture that establishes Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus in Cheshire as one of the world’s principal locations for scientifi c research, innovative technology development and entrepreneurial collaboration.

Minister of State for Universities and Science, David Willetts, confi rmed the Government’s support for the new partnership comprising the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Halton Borough Council, the Northwest

Development Agency and property investment development company Langtree.

The 20-year joint venture creates a 50:50 partnership between the public and private sectors and is planned to bring more than 6,000 jobs to the area.

David Willetts said: “The Government is committed to maximising and exploiting science, technology and innovation to stimulate the national economy, particularly in this current climate. This joint venture is an integral part of that strategy to demonstrate the positive impact of this kind of investment through the creation of new technologies, products and services, and the creation of new jobs that will benefi t all aspects of UK society.

“Daresbury has a long heritage of providing

cutting-edge and innovative science and this development will not only strengthen the science base at the campus, it will also drive inward investment and increase the economic impact of science through access to a broad range of scientifi c capability and facilities, teamed with international collaboration, open innovation leading to the creation and growth of new business.”

Under the agreement, STFC will help ensure that research can be harnessed and exploited by industry. Langtree will develop one million square foot of space for science and innovation facilities, hi-tech businesses and supporting infrastructure for the Campus, which has already benefi tted from more than £67m investment from the Northwest Development Agency.

The Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus is home to STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory, The Cockcroft Institute and the Daresbury Innovations Centre, which already hosts more than 100 high-tech companies, most of which are SMEs looking to fi nd solutions to global challenges including energy, healthcare, security and the environment.

20 QUESTIONS n

13

Q1) What brings you to the computer industry? My first passion was electronics and I studied electrical engineering at university. In the 1970s the start of the digital revolution meant that most systems were being re-engineered using digital techniques and it’s a small step from that to IT.

Q2) What advice would you give anybody wanting to get into this industry?Be flexible and open to change. Try to see the real world business application, rather than concentrating on the technology for its own sake.

Q3) What is the most important thing to look for in a new recruit? The ability to communicate effectively and to quickly assimilate and describe new ideas and knowledge.

Q4) If you could employ anybody from the world of business who would it be and why?I’m most impressed by those who can motivate others to achieve what that didn’t know they could. People like Terry Leahy, though I’m not a big fan of the dominance his supermarket has achieved - sometimes at the expense of suppliers and other smaller businesses.

Q5) As a business person describe your three main qualities? An ability to enthuse and get the best out of people, empathy with the customer’s point of view and competitiveness.

Q6) And your worst quality?Impatience, once decided on a course of action I want it to happen now.

Q7) What has been your most satisfying moment in business? When we finally paid off a substantial bank loan which I took out to partly pay for a major reconstruction of the business at MWL Systems about ten years ago. We haven’t looked back ever since which is also a major tribute to the team who came with me.

Q8) What do you always carry with you to work?My HTC smart phone but mostly for emails. I always like to know what’s going on.

Q9) Would you say you live to work or work to live?MWL Systems and the business we’re in is never very far from my thoughts 24/7 and I get some of my best (and worst) ideas when I’m away from my desk!

Q10) Who is the most famous person you have ever met – what were they like?I don’t really recognise fame or celebrity, as some of the most impressive people I’ve met are unknown and unsung in the wider world.

Q11) Who in your view is the IT industry role model and why?Apple’s Steve Jobs has excelled in creating and marketing a range of (mostly) well designed products and a culture which has led to tremendous brand loyalty. Having said that I can’t help but admire Bill Gates, not for Microsoft but for his recent acts of altruism.

Q12) What is your biggest achievement?Taking the opportunity afforded by being made redundant twenty six years ago and turning this negative into a successful, profitable and highly stable company which now provides a living for dozens of families in the area.

Q13) What was your first job and the amount in your first pay packet?Packing boxes in a cash and carry warehouse in Saltney. I seem to remember getting 30 shillings a week which is £1.50 in today’s money.

Q14) If you could choose to work for any company in the world which would it be and why?In my own industry IBM would be an exciting company to work for, particularly as they seem to have managed the successful transition from being a leading manufacturer to a leading service company over the past few years.

Q15) If you won the lottery would you retire? Not as a direct result, but a big win would probably increase my work load as I’d want to be sure that it was being used properly for good. This might mean cutting down my hours in the office. This is hypothetical as I don’t do the lottery!

Q16) Do you make time for lunch every day?Seldom, I’m one of those work-through types who gets sandwich crumbs in his keyboard.

Q17) What is a normal day for you?I am fortunate enough to enjoy a relaxing 20 minute commute through peaceful countryside which allows me to arrive at work refreshed between 8:30 and 9:00. Answering too many e-mails takes a percentage of the day the rest being spent in meetings both internal and with clients and suppliers. When not in communication activities I can work on the business strategy and planning. I generally leave the office at 6 o’clock but rarely resist the temptation to check my emails in the evening at home.

Q18) If you could work in a completely different field, what would it be?I don’t know why, but psychology has always fascinated me especially forensic or criminal psychology. Maybe I read too much Sherlock Holmes as a boy.

Q19) If you could turn the clock back, what would you have changed about your business career?Having seen alternative careers and outcomes I’m pretty happy with what I’ve achieved with MWL Systems as a company. Anyway, I believe in looking forward not backwards.

Q20) What hobbies do you have?I like nothing more than spending time pottering in the garden or tinkering in the workshop at home on the latest DIY project. I enjoy listening to music, mainly jazz, and reading science fiction and biographies.

Is Your Website generating Export Business for you?The Export Communications Review can help you to localise and optimise your website for international trade

Companies are relying more and more upon their websites to promote their products and services in the UK. The web enables them to reach their target clients in an efficient and cost-effective way: successful companies are developing specific web strategies to win more business at home.

A web strategy becomes even more crucial when you are exporting because:

“Customers are four times more likely to buy from a website in their own language” (Source: IDC)

“Visitors stay twice as long if a website is in their own language”

(Source: Forrester Research)

Websites can be designed to attract and convert new international clients.

“We have increased our international business by 25% in the first month following the Export Communications Review”

“As we were about to embark on the redevelopment of our e-commerce website, this review came at a perfect time. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact-packed review session and was impressed with the clarity with which everything was presented”

“We were provided with a clear and succinct report that will enable us to expand our website for our export market in a professional and correct manner”

A website export communications reviewUK Trade & Investment’s Export Communications Review will assess your current website against best practice and give you practical steps on how to localise and optimise your website for international trade.

With your international objectives and overseas target audiences in mind, the review will give recommendations on:

l Site set-up and management

l Design, structure and navigation

l International content

l Translation and localisation

l International promotion

l Implementation and monitoring.

How does the ECR work?Your company can benefit from a series of Export Communications Reviews to support the development of your international business. It is a flexible service, helping you to transform,

over time, your current website into a fully optimised on-line presence for international trade.

Each review includes:

l A visit to your company by an accredited consultant

l A thorough assessment of your website against international best practice

l A full written report with recommendations for action.

Financial support for the ECRThe cost of each review is £500 + VAT. Companies employing fewer than 250 staff can receive, from UKTI, a subsidy of £350 towards the cos of the first review and a subsidy of £250 towards the cost of two subsequent reviews.

How to applyYou can apply on-line at www.britishchambers.org.uk/ecr, where full details of eligibility for the UKTI subsidy can be found. Payment can be made by credit card, PayPal or cheque.

n CHAMBER EVENTS | NETWORKING

In September The West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce announced an enhanced networking and events portfolio, having appointed Discovery Events to ensure that the events schedule fulfils the needs for all members.

The Chamber is keen to ensure that we take on board your ideas and suggestions and therefore if you have any ideas for improvements to the existing events or if you have any other types of events you would like to see the Chamber host moving forward, then please do send in your suggestions. These are changing times and all the events we organize are there to benefit our members and provide the ideal arena to

meet new people and hopefully secure new business.

The last couple of months has seen a lot of new faces at the breakfast networking events and we hope that your support at these meetings will continue.

Effective business networking is the linking together of individuals who, through trust and relationship building, become walking, talking advertisements for one another.

We will be issuing the calendar of events for 2011 in the coming weeks, so please be sure to make a note in your diaries.

Your Chamber is changing…

Attending business networking events can help to build contact lists. Six important tips to consider for your next networking event:

1. Attending the same events regularly as different people will be there every time

2. Look for and take business literature set out by attendees

3. Be prepared to pitch your company and inform why people need your services rather than your competitors

4. Ensure you collect everyone’s business card or ask for an attendee list, if there is anyone you missed

5. Attending the event is only part of the story - the story goes nowhere without follow up, be it by telephone or email.

6. A soon after the event as possible make notes on the back of the business cards you’ve collected - as a memory jogger include where and when you met and what their needs are.

Although there are many different events, success is usually based on the same elements of business networking, so good preparation can help make any event an effective marketing activity for your business.

The West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce was delighted to organise ‘An evening with Sale Sharks’ at The Bank of America in Chester.

More than 30 Chamber members and rugby fans gathered for a great networking evening, where following drinks and refreshments, guests learnt all about the history of Sale Sharks Rugby Club and its corporate hospitality facilities with a presentation from Nathan Bombrys, Commercial Director, Sale Sharks.

Hosted by Steve Hanley, a formed Sale Sharks player, guests were then invited to ask the four international players all their burning rugby questions. Mark Cueto, Charlie Hodgson, Dwayne Peel and James Gaskell posed for photographs with guests and obliged by autographing posters and Sale Sharks memorabilia. A great evening of networking and mingling with the players, was rounded-off

with all guests being presented with a packed-out goody bag.

Cheshire FM covered the evening and interviewed all four of the international players, which was then played on the radio the following day. Sale Sharks were so delighted that the evening had gone so well, they are already talking about hosting another event in Chester next year. Watch this space for dates…

Sale Sharks came to Chester

Vale Royal Abbey, Northwich was the perfect location to host an evening question time on 8 October with the local MP and members of the council and Valley Partnership Board.

Following a successful meeting earlier in the year and by popular request, The West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce was delighted to host another follow-on meeting for Members and local residents to have their say, chaired by William Hogg (Board member).

Graham Evans, Weaver Valley MP was joined on a panel by Geoff Hope Terry, Chairman of the Weaver Valley Partnership Board and Councillors Keith Musgrave and Herbert Manley. The panel outlined future plans for the Weaver Valley area and answered questions from concerned residents about their own issues, in particular plans for the Winsford shopping centre, Civic Hall and surrounding areas.

Other issues with regards to the demise of the ‘Northwich Vision’, increasing business rates, road infrastructures and plans to attract new business to Northwich town centre now that the mines have been filled in were also raised.

The evening attracted interesting debate and certainly gave Graham Evans and the other members of the panel food for thought. Improving our local areas is an on-going issue with plenty of funding bids and hard work taking place in the background. Those that attended have been extended a warm welcome to visit Graham Evans at his new Northwich-based office anytime with any other burning issues.

n MANDORE MEDIA

20 West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Magazine

North Wales entrepreneur David Petie has launched Mandore Media, a new business based near Chester, innovating the provision of PR and Media services. It will help organisations communicate their stories, by combining creative thinking, consistency and integrity.

David Petie has a firm grounding in both PR and business, having worked as a journalist, communications executive and management consultant for many years. “Business people are keen to understand the benefits of investing in PR, and in many cases these aren’t clear”, says David.

Award winning writer, successful journalist and photographer, David has combined a range of skills to create a unique business. “My take on PR is slightly different from most in the industry”.

David believes that he is innovating the way PR and media services are delivered, setting a new agenda for the industry. “If used effectively, PR can be an important element in helping an organisation achieve its strategic ambitions, whether this be in support of a major sales campaign, company reorganisation or new product launch. Effective campaigning can even help change government policy”

“However, most PR agencies base their remuneration on the number of words printed, whether that is in a local paper or nationally. There is no measure of quality or effectiveness. And usually no clear link to strategy and the real business agenda. No wonder PR agencies have a poor reputation.”

“Most editors won’t publish stories unless they have an interesting message that catches their readers’ imagination. Creating innovative and eye catching copy is fundamental to bringing readers in and communicating the strategic messages organisations want to put across. Mandore Media takes a campaigning view towards media relations, and every campaign starts with an event.”

“I believe that we are revolutionising the way PR services are delivered to business, bringing the best of political campaigning and event management to create attention-grabbing stories.”

Mandore Media also provides a photographic service that supports their media relations team. They believe that every article should be accompanied by a photograph, preventing editors from using inappropriate images. “Every event has an image, and every campaign should start with a picture: image is everything”, says David.

The primary objective of any press coverage is to support the strategic aims of the organisation in question. Mandore Media’s proposition represents a step change in the delivery of PR and Media services, where these elements are seen as strategic, helping large and small businesses manage the perception of customers, suppliers and other people.

Mandore Media creates public relations programmes that go beyond the simple press release. From on-line campaigns, to focused events and editorials, there are many ways to reach your chosen audience. What is it you want to say, but more importantly, what do you stand for?

What does your company “Stand for”? Have you thought about this issue? Most people who buy goods or services gravitate towards organisations that “stand for something”. The image you project in your chosen marketplace is fundamental to you attracting the right customers.

Is your website working hard enough? www.stuckon.co.uk

Under Penalty of GoogleWhether you’ve hired an Internet marketing agency to look at the search engine optimisation of your website or not, any indiscretions in the eyes of Google can lead to your website being penalised or even banned outright. Google, the most important search engine and with over 90% of UK search traffi c, is where the majority of your visitors should be coming from. However, Google is very strict when it comes to playing fair, and doesn’t pull any punches when it fi nds websites that break its rules.

Lack of Unique, Relevant CopyIt doesn’t matter to Google how polished your website’s design may be – Google sees text. Without plenty of quality, unique and relevant copy, your website is invisible to search engines. When Google offers results to a search, it wants to offer the most relevant results it can – make your website one of those results by giving Google exactly what it wants.

Your Website is an IslandEveryone loves an island, but in website terms you

don’t want your site to be an island; you want as many other websites linking to you as possible. Links are an integral part of Google’s algorithm, and are vital for improved rankings, traffi c and overall website success but even then, you need to build these in the right way.

Most businesses have a website nowadays – it’s practically second nature to being in business, like getting dressed before you leave the house in the morning. However, like getting dressed, having a website isn’t just a matter of throwing a few things together and hoping it somehow ‘works’. A website that isn’t working is an often expensive failure.

So what could be stopping a website from doing what it was designed for, generating enquiries, leads or sales? Here are three common barriers to online success:

INTERVIEW

Peter HawkinsManaging Director of the Cheshire Jets Basketball Team

For Peter Hawkins, his job as Managing Director of the Cheshire Jets Basketball Club is a labour of love. However, for all he is a huge fan of the sport and relishes being involved, one of his big themes has also been bringing business practices to the job of developing the club further.

BM MAGAZINE 04.indd 22 1/12/10 13:25:15

THE BIG INTERVIEW ■

23West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce MagazineWest Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Magazine

And he believes it is important that he succeeds because a healthy basketball club has signifi cant knock-on effects for the economy of the area, both in terms of increased publicity and income generated and invested in the wider community.

The earlier years of Peter’s businesses career were spent in the food industry. Initially, he joined Hazlewood Foods PLC following graduation and progressed to become MD of its Pann Krisp site in Wrexham, a chilled food manufacturer turning over £30m a year as it supplied major retailers.

In 2002, he was given the opportunity to be part of a two-man management buyout of the company from Hazlewood Foods. Having developed the business further over the three years that followed, they sold it to Fenmarc Foods in 2005.

When the hand-over period was completed, Peter found himself seeking a new challenge and the opportunity arose to take over at his beloved Cheshire Jets, a professional basketball club based in Chester and determined to be part of the game‘s elite.

Peter, who with wife Joanne and children, Sam 14 and Georgie 12, was a supporter of the club at the time the offer came along, jumped at the chance.

He said: “I was a fan and, with my family, a season ticket holder at the Jets. In 2007, they were in danger of folding and was asked if I could get involved. I took over as a labour of love in summer 2007.

“My biggest challenge as Managing Director of the Cheshire Jets is ensuring the pro team continues to run as a business. We don’t invest in plant and machinery. We invest in playing

staff and that investment must be affordable and generate a return.”

Because of that philosophy, Peter believes that it is crucial that he and his staff always think commercially when it comes to developing the club.

He said: “Pro basketball is a tough industry in the UK and it’s important we constantly remind ourselves of that. We have to live within our means and not go in search of short-term glory at the expense of a long-term sustainable future.

“Many people will see basketball as an American sport. It is less well known that, for many European countries, it is the number one or number two sport, with attendances at games topping 10,000 people and players earning £1m annual contracts.

“The challenge in the UK is overcoming the media dominance that football, in particular, has. We do this through growing participation at grassroots level and showing young people what a great sport it is.”

Which is where the Jets Foundation comes into the story, a charity which takes the sport out to the region‘s young people and uses it as a way of shaping and changing lives.

Peter, who is passionate about that side of the Jets’ activities, said: “We set up Jets Foundation as a non-profi t making business and later a registered charity, which is now the aspect that receives most of my time and focus on a full-time basis. The Foundation uses the hook of professional sport to engage young people across the North West in various programmes.

“This ranges from teaching nine and ten year olds how to eat healthily through to working

with rehabilitating young offenders and many other young people in between. This year, the charity’s programmes will reach more than 8,000 young people.

“Professional sport is so powerful to any community as a potential force for good. Basketball, in particular, is a sport of lower demographics. It has an image, a lifestyle, music and fashion associated with it that means we can use it to engage those young people which other programmes are unable to reach.”

Underpinning everything he does, whether it be on the professional playing side or through the work of the Foundation, is the realisation that a successful basketball club has benefi ts for the economy of the area.

Peter, who lives just outside Chester, said: “Sport generally punches above its weight in Cheshire with 21,180 people employed in the industry, £1.7bn of turnover and more than 5% of people in Cheshire employed in the industry. A successful basketball club raises the profi le of the region with national TV and press coverage. In addition, we are a business which employees eleven full-time people year round and 20 in season, have a fan base of more than 4,000 Jets members and turnover approaching £1m.”

He is ambitious for the club to keep growing in the years to come, saying: “The club and, in particular, our community activity has expanded exponentially over the last four years. Our key goals for the club are, fi rstly, to build an arena which will a home for our community activity and a 2,500-seater facility for pro games. We have publicly announced a joint proposal with our friends at Cheshire West and Chester, to become the largest basketball club in the country in terms of membership. We are currently fourth.

“Another target is to win some silverware for our fans but by far the most important challenge is to build our community programme to continue to be a force for good for the young people in our region.”

*Jets Foundation and Cheshire Jets pro team are keen to expand their commercial partners for 2010/11 season. If you would like to ‘make a difference’ please ring the Jets offi ce on 01244 302010.

Businesses and authorities need to be sure that they employ a legal costs company they can trust to deal with all their needs, as efficiently and effectively as possible, especially with the importance of preparing bills of costs, preparing and replying to points of dispute, negotiating legal costs, and attending detailed assessments.

Oracle Cost Consultants is a professional yet personable company that believes in giving their clients top class service tailored to their individual needs.

Over the years Oracle has evolved and grown into a reputable, successful business and in light of that have recently expanded into Chester, opening an office in Chester Business Park at Regus House.

Tom Walsh, the founder and director of Oracle Cost Consultants, commented, “After working for costs companies for many years, I decided to open a legal costs company with a difference - to make sure I provided a flexible service that meets the client on their own terms. I wanted to go the extra mile to provide a tailored service, be that visiting them at work to ensure efficiency, or being at the end of a phone to deal with any questions.

“With my personal experience in the industry of 17 years and the fact that I have been involved in some of the most high profile pieces of costs litigation since the introduction of the Access to Justice Act 1999, I aim to meet and exceed client expectations along with my team who are all Association of Law Cost Draftsmen (ALCD) members. I’m delighted to see Oracle grow and expand into Chester, bringing our exceptional service to Chester and North Wales’ doorstep.”

Tom Walsh is a Costs Lawyer with a wealth of experience meaning he enjoys greater rights of audience at court and can appear on appeals and on behalf of litigants. Some cases he has worked on include Callery v Gray, Sarwar v Alam, Tilby v Perfect Pizza and the TAG Test Cases.

Oracle value communication, providing their clients with advice when they need it, detailed costs breakdowns and schedules. In fact one of the many benefits of being one of Oracle’s clients is that they provide detailed reporting on all files for individual clients utilising the latest in case management systems.

If you’re looking for a proactive, rather than reactive legal costs company then Oracle could help you. Their capacity to handle all types of litigation costs including fixed costs, and ability to adapt to changes in the legal costs market mean that you, as the client, can have true peace of mind. ISO 9001:2008More and more companies are insisting that their suppliers operate a Quality Management System. MGR quality management system is based upon the International Quality Management System – ISO 9001:2008.

Achieving ISO 9001:2008 can open up new markets, allowing companies to achieve ‘PREFERRED SUPPLIER’ status with their clients. In addition, a good quality management system can help companies to get the best out of their staff and systems, improving effi ciency and continually striving to improve how they work.

OHSAS 18001: 2007Organisations of all kinds are increasingly concerned with both achieving and demonstrating sound occupational health and safety performance by controlling and understanding their risks and being consistent with their policy and objectives. With more exacting and stringent legislation, it is important for more businesses to have a mechanism of ensuring that their relevant practices are contained in the law with the strong emphasis on employee health, safety and welfare. This standard provides the framework for businesses to work under and to safeguard against any infringements of the law that could lead to prosecution and possible negative effects on future business.

Health and safety management training courses include:• Health & Safety awareness • Risk Assessment • Fire Risk assessment • Fire warden training • Manual handling

Technology Super Highway

New technologies and their application are the drivers of economic growth.

The harnessing of steam power and its application to transport during the nineteenth century has shaped the subsequent development of the whole Chamber area from the docks on the Mersey to the resorts on the North Wales coast which enjoyed spectacular growth following the opening of the Chester and Holyhead railway. The advent and improvement of the internal combustion engine brought about the need for trunk roads of the quality of the M53/M56 and the A55.

Today those same roads have a key role to play in harnessing a new generation of technologies for the benefit of the region as they connect clusters of leading edge businesses and educational institutions distributed along their length. Recognising both the potential and the geographical challenge which this linear distribution poses, the Mersey Dee Alliance (which has been formed from five local authorities in the region from Denbighshire in the west to Wirral in the east together with the Welsh Assembly Government and North West Development Agency) is currently working with the Chamber, Glyndwr University and the University of Chester to set up an Innovation Network to support this corridor of knowledge and industry.

The Network will be of particular relevance to the key growth sectors in

the area including low carbon and renewable energy, health and bio-sciences, advanced manufacturing and materials, and digital and creative industries.

The Network will aim to improve the performance of businesses, by providing a means for them to talk to each other and to be aware of and access national initiatives and opportunities. There will be some pilot events which will consist of informal business breakfasts plus the occasional specialist seminar and details of Network diary dates will be listed on the Alliance’s website www.merseydeealliance.org.uk

CHAMBER TRAINING n

Example two:Over ten years ago a large global bank realised a large proportion of high net worth individuals did not invest in financial products to anything like the expected extent. Through research they found ‘they did not understand the products’ – but it was not that simple. This group were professionals, senior and intelligent; they were not going to be convinced by young slick sale people.

The solution was to pull in educational experts to provide a range of programmes and resources, targeted to this audience to give them confidence and to understand their clients better. The consequence was a dramatic uptake in investment products by the target population group.

These are just two examples of how your Chamber Training Consultants can assist you to profit more. If there is something we can assist with whether that be increasing sales, team issues, project management, getting to know your customers better, financial, health and safety or IT skills etc.

We have more than a hundred years of combined experience, we are waiting to hear from you 07855 311393

Profit from learning…Companies are always looking for ways to drive competitive advantage and growth. Learning and educational skills can do this if applied in the right way – here are two examples of a more productive approach.

Example one:Frustrated team members constantly arguing and squabbling with one another. Upon investigation it became evident that each team member did not have clear and concise job descriptions. This resulted in duplication, lack of inspiration, no ownership and general mayhem within the team.

Team dynamics improved once they knew one another’s roles and efficiency increased across the company through reduced wastage and increased productivity.

Maria Pereira has served almost a million meals to guests and staff in a career spanning 30 years at The Chester Grosvenor and Spa Hotel.

Now Maria’s three decades of service have been recognised with a long service award and presentation.

Maria, a mum-of-two and grandmother-of-fi ve, celebrated the landmark with colleagues and friends at a champagne reception.

The 64-year-old from Shotton, North Wales, started work at the fi ve-star landmark hotel in 1980 after spotting an ad in the Chester Leader.

She said: “I never thought when I saw that job advertised that I would still be here 30 years on. I really enjoy working here.

“I know every member of staff in the hotel and like making sure they have a good meal when they are at work.

“The chefs have been very kind to me. I’ve worked here so long I’ve watched executive chef Simon Radley grow up!”

Maria started out making breakfast and lunch

for guests in the hotel’s kitchen but 20 years ago she was given her own kitchen to run – the staff dining room.

Since then she has served up hot food every lunchtime for hundreds of hungry hotel staff.

Jonathan Slater, managing director of The Chester Grosvenor and Spa, said: “Maria has the most important job in the hotel because she keeps staff fed and happy.

“Thirty years at The Chester Grosvenor and Spa is a real achievement and we couldn’t let that anniversary pass without marking it with Maria.”

North West freelancers in the digital, creative and marketing sector reported signs of green shoots at the recent Brookson Enterprise Freelance Fair.

Seventy six per cent of freelancers declared that business life was getting better at the event in Birkenhead.

However, about half of the responses reported that the improvement was only marginal or slight.

Neil Lewis from Chester, organiser of the Brookson Enterprise Freelance Fair, said: “Many freelancers are experiencing an upturn in work as private sector fi rms look to expand and improve their marketing activity.

“However, the competitive landscape for freelancers remains tough and the need to balance delivering work for clients with a steady effort to generate new business and new clients is on-going”.

“The fact that the freelancers attending our events, where we help match them with potential new business, are feeling more positive about their prospects may be a sign

that by their steady efforts to attend these events and build contacts is paying off”.

The research conducted on the day also discovered that 71% of attendees expected to gain business as a result of attending the event.

More details on forthcoming fairs can be found at www.EnterpriseFreelanceFair.co.uk

North West freelancers sense recovery

If you have recently or are considering starting up in business and either already have or are considering taking on employees you may be able to take advantage of a national insurance holiday that was introduced on 6th September 2010. This includes businesses started on or after 22nd June 2010.

The NIC savings of up to £5,000 apply to each employee for their fi rst year of employment, the holiday applies to the fi rst 10 employees. The relief is not automatic and a formal application needs to be made to HM Revenue & Customs. The holiday is in respect of employers NIC only.

Even if you have an existing business now is the time to carry out a review to see if your current arrangements are tax effi cient. With the rising cost of national insurance areas such as salary sacrifi ce, childcare vouchers, employer pension contributions, company cars, healthcare, are becoming increasingly more important and if structured correctly can benefi t both employees and employers.

If you are a director of a limited company there are also signifi cant tax savings that can be made by restructuring your overall remuneration and benefi ts package.

Chris Smith is happy to discuss this in more detail and will carry out a free health check for your business.

n VALE ROYAL ABBEY

32 West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Magazine

Vale Royal Abbey was a medieval abbey and later a country house. It was founded in 1270 by Edward I for monks of the austere Cistercian order. The King intended the abbey to be on the grandest scale however financial difficulties meant that these ambitions could not be fulfilled and the final building was considerably smaller than planned.

The abbey we now know as Vale Royal was founded by Prince Edward, the future Edward I, prior to his accession to the throne.

Vale Royal Abbey presents a unique opportunity for conferences, meetings, seminars, training days and product launches as well as an ideal wedding setting.

As a conference, banqueting and wedding venue Vale Royal Abbey really is second to none. The Club is set in remote peaceful Cheshire countryside yet with immediate access to the A556 linking directly to the national motorway network and surrounding major road systems. Easy access can be gained from both Manchester & Liverpool international airports.

The stunning facilities on offer provide all the appropriate requirements for any gathering from a small meeting to a major conference. All first floor rooms of the Great House are available for meetings and conferences with the rooms themselves being set up in a format as required in discussion with the appropriate organisers.

The Great House forms an imposing sight when viewed on arrival. The modern facilities in this beautifully refurbished building provide

those attending a unique venue and one that enthuses grandeur.

The ‘Great Hall’ is the venue for all major events and provides a stunning arena for any requirement. Situated on the first floor, the ‘Great Hall’ is totally adaptable to any environment and can seat up to up to 220 guests for a conference and 120 guests for a dinner function.

The ‘Library’ gracefully compliments the Great Hall and is used for more intimate events seating up to 110 for a conference and 50 guests for dining.

The ‘Lounge’ is provided with its own individual bar and is tastefully furnished with a variety of dining tables and chairs and sumptuous sofas. The Lounge is utilised for small banqueting events and as a meeting room in addition to being a reception area for larger events requiring the use of the Great Hall & Library. The Lounge overlooks the stunning backdrop of the 18 hole golf course which is ideal for corporate golf events and directly overlooks the clubhouse courtyard, 1st tee, 18th green and putting green.

The ‘Armoury’ is utilised as a bar and reception

area for events held only in the Great Hall. Furnished with comfortable sofas and accessible via the original stone floor of the Great House the Armoury provides a certain ambience ahead of arrival into the Great Hall.

The grounds of Vale Royal Abbey are as stunning as the building itself. The well-manicured lawns are available for drinks receptions providing a relaxed country feel, while offering splendid views of the Cheshire countryside. The courtyard area provides a magnificent arrival setting in front of the Abbey itself which, in addition to the beautiful adjacent grounds and lake, provides ample photographic opportunities, sure to enhance the memories of your special occasion.

So whether you’re looking for the perfect Wedding venue, somewhere to celebrate that special occasion, or an ideal place to do business, Vale Royal Abbey offers a truly unique and breathtaking experience. A visit to Vale Royal Abbey is the best way to fully appreciate the delights of such a majestic venue.

Our experienced corporate team are available to advise on the most suitable format to achieve the maximum from any event and a dedicated coordinator shall be available throughout the day to ensure successful management of your event.

n MOVERS AND SHAKERS

New challenge for KateKate Parkinson has been appointed as the new Angels Den Regional Manager for Wales and the West Midlands.

Building on the success of its funding events in the South East, the North of England and Scotland, Angels Den is working with Innovas Solutions to extend its business angel funding service to entrepreneurs and investors in the North West, West Midlands and Wales.

An MBA graduate from Cardiff Business School, with 15 years experience working in construction, biotechnology and the environmental sector, Kate has also managed major public sector business support contracts helping companies to grow and expand into new markets.

In her new role, Kate will not only be looking for innovative entrepreneurs and small businesses that need angel funding,

but also helping experienced investors to fi nd great local opportunities, and hopefully helping some new and fi rst-time investors take that fi rst step.

Kate, who is from Innovas Solutions who have been appointed as the Regional Manager for Angels Den in Wales, Northwest England, and the West Midlands, said: “I love working with small businesses because many of them show such creativity and imagination that no two days are ever the same. It’s also really rewarding to see a budding entrepreneur get his idea off the ground, and to help an investor to fi nd the opportunity that they’ve been looking for, to really make a difference to a local business. I’m pleased to say that we’ve already enjoyed our fi rst success in the West Midlands, with one small business securing their investment through us, in just 6 weeks’.

Every business has its unique experience and skillsets to offer potential customers, and now is a really important time for sole traders to combine forces and provide a holistic approach to the services which they provide.

At a recent networking event in Chester I was fortunate to sit on a table and had the pleasure of meeting Chris Blythe who, for the past 26 years, owns and runs a very successful business called CB Interiors. Chris is a vibrant and enthusiastic person with a creative twist. I have my own successful marketing business and can offer a whole range of services to assist a business to grow and develop.

It transpired that Chris was just setting up a sister company called Retail Adviser to concentrate on the retail market, as this is the area which she has mainly serviced recently. We discovered that we both had a passion to be involved in the Leisure industry and both our skills and experience seemed to marry perfectly to work together in the future. Chris has fl air and passion for interior design and myself for developing a business using a wealth of marketing techniques.

We decided to join forces and target the Leisure industry, particularly

Hotels and Restaurants who wish to liven up their business and increase turnover. Our strapline is “we can make a difference to your business”.
