Permanent hair dye may upcancer risk in women: Study

New York, Women who use per-

manent hair dye products,kindly take note. Research-ers have found that perma-nent hair dye can slightlyincrease the risk of sometypes of breast, skin andovarian cancer.

The study from HarvardUniversity in the US, pub-lished in the journal The BMJon Thursday, also revealedthat natural hair colour wasalso found to impact on thelikelihood of some cancers.

Use of hair dye is verypopular, particularly among

older age groups keen tocover up signs of grey. Forexample, it is estimated thatit is used by 50-80 per centof women and 10 per centof men aged 40 and older inthe US and Europe.

While the World HealthOrganisation’s InternationalAgency for Research onCancer has classified occu-pational exposure to hairdyes as a probable carcino-gen, there is no warningabout personal use becauseexisting evidence is incon-clusive.

To gain a better under-standing of the risk of can-cer from use of personal hairdye, researchers analyseddata on 117,200 womenfrom the Nurses’ HealthStudy, which includes as-sessments of hair dye expo-sure.

The women did nothave cancer at the start ofthe study and were followedfor 36 years.

Ever use of permanent

dyes was associated with aslightly increased risk of thebasal cell carcinoma of theskin, and this risk was higherin women with naturallylight hair.

The results showed anincreased risk of three typesof breast cancer — estrogenreceptor-negative, progest-erone receptor-negative,and hormone receptor-negative — and ovariancancer was also linked touse of permanent dyes, withrisk rising according to thecumulative amount of dyewomen were exposed to.

An increased risk ofHodgkin lymphoma wasalso seen with the use ofpermanent hair dye butonly for women with natu-rally dark hair.

“Possible explanationscould be that shades of per-manent hair dyes are asso-ciated with the concentra-tion of ingredients, withdarker colours havinghigher concentrations,” thestudy authors said.
