the estimated cost of removing graffiti to NsW councils and residents each year is estimated to top

$100 million and the race to stay one step ahead of the vandals is often lost as unsightly graffiti appears overnight. after nearly two years of planning, strathfield Rotary Club has followed turrumurra Rotary’s initiative in establishing a

graffiti removal program in the strathfield municipality, which could be extended to parts of Burwood.

the program, supported by $10,000 funding from strathfield Council and sponsorship from homebush Bendigo Bank and the strathfield Chamber of Commerce, is a

matter of pride says current President, Ray Wilson oam.

“We wanted to establish this community service as a matter of pride in the area,” said Ray. “The aim is to eliminate existing graffiti in the local community and keep it graffiti free.”

Policies and procedures are in place for safety, including heavy-duty overalls, eye goggles, gloves, hats and also for the disposal of all left over

paint and pollution residue as well as a sydney Water permit for commercial cleaning. Graffiti can only be removed with the property owner’s permission and would also require the insurer to be advised and then confirm the graffiti removal prior to any commencement.

homebush West cellist Nazli sendurgut brought music to the ears of Columbians when she went on tour in south america.

Nazli recently toured with the sydney North Chamber ensemble. Besides giving a number of concerts in Bogota, the ensemble also played in the small village of Nocaima to present a concert in support of a program there that has been set up purposely as part of a community effort to encourage the locals to stay home, rather than leave for the big cities. one of the concerts was even

staged in a favella (slum).Nazli first became

interested in playing a musical instrument when she attended homebush West Public school, which had an active music program. she started with piano in year 1, then several years later when a cellist came to play for the music class, became interested in cello.

she took private lessons in both instruments, as well as attending Government saturday turkish school. she applied to attend the Conservatorium high

school for year 7 , but wasn’t successful on that occasion. she attended strathfield Girls’ high school for four years, then successfully gained entrance to Newtown high school of the Performing arts, graduating to the sydney Conservatorium of music.

Now in her third year of a degree in music studies, Nazli is considering extending and expanding her current private teaching of both cello and piano. Nazli plays in the australian turkish music ensemble as well as the Chamber ensemble.

Mid-MorNiNg last friday a man described as being of

caucasian appearance in his late 40s or early 50s entered haberfield public school and sexu-ally assaulted one girl, indecently assaulted two other girls and physically assaulted a fourth girl. he was wearing a blue and white checked long sleeved shirt, blue denim jeans, black runners, a blue cap and dark sun glasses. at the time of writing, this obscene man is still at large and

travel to and from school – i know i did, but never the school environment and this is the devastating and scary consequence of last friday’s awful news.

once-upon-a-time, open school grounds provided an after-school and weekend playground, particularly in overcrowd-ed, urban areas, where open space is minimal. Nowadays, school grounds are fenced because of vandalism and predatory attacks.

what a sad indict-ment on our society. the stranger danger message

has been out there for many decades but it feels like the incidence of sexual and violent assaults on children is increasing. what can we do?

Leaving your children to play alone in the front yard of your home is a no-go. Being at the local park without a trusted adult is a no-go. playing footy or cricket in the local street is a forever-ago memory from the mid-20th century.

i walked through the bush at cheltenham to primary school with a group and we were taught about ‘bad men’ – but my

children were driven to and from school every day in their primary years. My life was governed around school times for 18 years (with the help of grand-parents, or reciprocat-ing parents and friends). getting to and from high school on public transport was a worry but it was time to let go a bit. then mobile phones provided some reassurance. here’s hoping police catch the vile low-life who got into haberfield public school last week and that the courts put him away – forever.

iN a WiN for local horse owners, sydney local health district Chief executive, dr teresa anderson announced on Wednesday may 15 that the lease agreement with the NsW mounted Police unit to agist police horses on the yaralla estate at Concord has been terminated but that all horses must leave the site by may 31 because of safety concerns.

“a new safety report on the condition of the yaralla estate at Concord has found all horses agisted on the site must leave by may 31,” dr anderson advised in a press statement. “The report, conducted by a panel of horse experts, found conditions on the estate to be worse than previously thought and unsafe for horses and the public until significant rectification works are completed.”

dr anderson had commissioned the report to assess the suitability of a community proposal to extend agistment on the site by six months, following a packed meeting late last month with angry local horse owners and interested locals who criticised sydney local health district, for their decision to enter an agreement with the police without seeking expressions of interest or tenders.

The district responded to community concerns regarding management of the site and has terminated its lease

agreement with the NsW mounted Police unit.

“sydney local health district will now open calls for tenders for site management, allowing all interested parties to apply for the agistment licence,” she said.

The tender process will be overseen by an independent probity officer and a tender review panel member from the ministry of health.

Rectification works are expected to take three months and will include fence replacement, bush regeneration, maintenance and pasture improvement and weed eradication. The expert panel has advised that all horses must be off the site for this work to be carried out safely.

“When the district granted the current agistment licence in 1996, the intention was that any income received from the licensee would be reinvested into maintenance of the facilities and estate to support the provision of health services,” said dr anderson.

“unfortunately, the licensee has failed to maintain the property as per the contractual agreement and we are now in a situation where the district must pay for significant repairs. This is money which could have been used for health services for our patients,” she said.

I have always taken pride in our community, ever since I was a child growing up in the area.

As Mayor, I remain passionate about ensuring our area is clean and presentable for those who live and work in the area and for the many visitors to our town centres.

In order to maintain clean public spaces, Burwood Council is taking firm action against illegal dumping with the use of mobile cameras in hotspots across the local area.

The initiative has been a success, with a mobile camera in Russell Street significantly reducing litter in the area and deterring potential dumping.

Instead of dumping unwanted materials, items can be put out for collection at Council cleanups or taken to the nearest waste centre.

Another concern residents have raised with me is abandoned shopping trolleys left on public verges and footpaths. Dumped trolleys pose a serious danger to pedestrians and vehicles.

Both illegal dumping and abandoning trolleys are punishable offenses and those responsible could face significant fines.

I would like to urge people to report any sightings of dumped rubbish or trolleys. Please call Council on 9911 9911 if you have any information on illegal dumping.

the CuRtaiN is only days away from rising for Rosebank College’s long awaited production of the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie.

Running from 24 to 26 may, the story is set in 1958 and is inspired by elvis Presley’s army draft notice and includes a cast of over 80 actors, dancers, singers and musicians from the school.

“it is an honour to be producing theatre magic with the students and proving what they are capable of. it has been equally pleasing to discover a wonderful team of staff so willing to help,” said director miss Therese Bean.

Through this experience students

have developed their skills in teamwork, following direction, taking constructive feedback onboard, maintaining commitment, striving for 100 per cent and stepping out of their comfort zones.

the NsW Government has awarded strathfield Council $50,000 for a strategy to reduce the number of people being robbed in public places.

member for strathfield Charles Casuscel l i and attorney General Greg smith sC announced the funding earlier this month.

“Council will use proven Crime Prevention through e nv i ro n m e nt a l d e s i g n techniques to increase safety at locations where bag snatchers have struck repeatedly,” mr Casuscelli said.

“lighting will be improved and trees and shrubs will be trimmed to optimise visibility

and make it harder for thieves to avoid being caught.”

“Warning signs will also be erected to encourage pedestrians to protect their belongings.”

The strategy will focus on parts of the homebush West CBd, including the council car park and the key commuter routes from the railway station and shopping precinct.

Council will also conduct a safety expo and street barbeques to inform community members about how they can reduce the risk of being targeted by thieves.

mr smith said people should avoid carrying large amounts of money and should keep valuables tucked away in places that are hard for bag snatchers to access.

stRathfield ses volunteers headed to the Blue mountains National Park this month to learn the skills they need to take part in wilderness navigation exercises.

the course consisted of map reading, orientation, finishing with a field navigation exercise near tunnel View lookout outside Glenbrook.

strathfield ses local Controller darrin Parkin said that rural and wilderness navigation is an important skill for the role of an ses volunteer, even in the inner west of sydney.

“This is another useful skill that forms part of the training of a NsW ses volunteer,” mr Parkin said.

“it’s not just floods and storms that ses volunteers can be called on to assist with in a time of crisis.”

mr Parkin said that NsW ses volunteers are often called-in to conduct missing persons searches in wilderness areas.

“Navigation and orienteering are also vital skills for when we have to work out of area,” he added.

the Boys and girls in blue have hit the road in the inner west following a boost to local police numbers after the NsW Government welcomed a further 202 officers into the NsW Police force at the graduating ceremony in Goulburn last month.

delighted that the local area had received a further 11 officers. of these 11 new officers, six will be stationed at flemington, four at ashfield and one at Burwood.

“We’re urging people who are most at risk to have the flu vaccination this autumn, because influenza can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia,” says NPs medicineWise clinical adviser dr Philippa Binns.

“We know that every year in australia, it is estimated there are up to 2,500 influenza-related deaths, and up to 18,000 people hospitalised.Those at risk include people who are 65 years or older, pregnant women, aboriginal and torres strait islander people who are 15 years or older, people who are obese, and those with a pre-existing medical condition such as a weakened immune system, diabetes, lung disease, heart disease, or chronic neurological conditions.”

The flu vaccine is available free, through the National immunisation Program, for more than 5 million australians who are more at risk of severe disease. a health professional can tell you if you are eligible for a free flu vaccine.

The 2013 flu vaccine for australia is different from the 2012 vaccine, and

includes the most common flu virus strains that are causing infection around the world this year.

“People who were vaccinated in 2012 still need to be vaccinated again this year to ensure protection against the flu strains that are causing infection this flu season,” says dr Binns.

“it’s also important for parents to know that there are several brands of flu vaccines that can be given to eligible children aged 6 months or older. Recent safety studies have found that there are no specific concerns associated with using these specific vaccines in children. But some brands should only be used for adults, so people should always talk to their doctor if they have any questions or concerns.”

CaNada Bay mayor angelo tsirekas says the community and council have been ignored after the Planning assessment Commission (PaC) gave the go-ahead to build 391 residential units in a 15 multi-storey development on hilly street at mortlake.

“We are shocked by the PaC decision to approve it,” mayor tsirekas said. “The development is twice the density permitted in this area and our studies show that the local road network will not be able to handle the level of traffic generated from a development of

this scale, particularly given there is also a lack of public transport in this area.”

“What is most disappointing is that the only new infrastructure that the state Government is requesting are upgrades to two intersections on Concord Road and Wellbank and Patterson streets. it’s a joke.”

No oNe could ever accuse former Vogue australia editor kirstie Clements of being fashionably late.

less than a year after she was unceremoniously sacked from the top job, which she had held for 13 years, Clements penned a memoir The Vogue factor. far from an angry rant about her dismissal, the book is more like an extended essay on all things fashion: the increasing pressure on editors to please everyone, the rise of online, social media and fashion bloggers and, most interestingly, Clements’ thoughts on models who are dangerously skinny. Clements even reveals that some models “snack” on tissues.

ironically, the skinny issue is what carries the most weight in this book, which is rather thin on Clements the person. true, while most editors already have inflated egos, she was never one for hogging the limelight, though it would have been nice to understand her a bit more. (Burwood scene’s request for an interview with Clements was ignored by her publisher. Perhaps appearing in a community newspaper would be considered a fashion faux pas?)

By contrast, Grace, a memoir by former model and creative director of Vogue america’s Grace Coddington is a much more personal account of one of fashion’s most influential people.

Though she writes

dismissively of The devil Wears Prada, it’s likely that had the film – which was as exaggerated as it was realistic in its depiction of magazine publishing – never been created, then it’s questionable whether Vogue would have ever made its own documentary, The september issue.

it was in the latter film that Coddington became something of a hero. Gutsy, outspoken and not afraid of legendary editor-in-chief anna Wintor, known as the “ice queen”, she was proof that even in the most superficial of industries there are people who keep it real. in her memoir, Coddington reveals her absolute refusal to even take part in the film. lucky she did, otherwise it would have been a yawn fest.

Worth pointing out is that Grace was co-written with michael Roberts. Coddington even admits that she’s only ever read a handful of books and is not a writer, and it’s this honesty that endeared most of us to her in the first place. drawings by Coddington, which are often humorous, also add to her charm.

While both Clements and Coddington both have interesting stories to tell, what will be most interesting is to see how long it takes for anna Wintour to pen her own memoir.

“i’ve loved custard apples since i was a kid and growing up i would eat them raw; it’s the simplest and easiest way to eat the fruit.

“another way i like to enjoy custard apples is to freeze the fruit’s flesh in a bowl with natural yoghurt and honey, then pop it in a food processor and blend until smooth,” adds adam.

Patricia was born in Corowa in the Riverina on the murray River, the second of eight girls to coach driver James kearney

Patricia became a skilled seamstress and was employed on this barter system by local businesses. during WWii, having trained as a nurse, Patricia moved to melbourne to work before marrying donald (Bill) mcdonald at the end of the war. The couple settled in Petersham before moving to Girraween to run a poultry farm and welcoming a daughter, Patricia then son Brian. The family moved to strathfield in 1957 where Bill and Patricia volunteered for st. Vincent de Paul and local schools and parishes.

JohN miChell’s ashfield Cycles is a leader in the cycling world and after 35 years, his business and reputation grows each year, and in the process, he has encouraged thousands of people to get fit and healthy by riding a bike.

the inner-west resident started out as a 25 year-old on Parramatta Road in ashfield before moving to his present location on liverpool Road in the mid-1980s.

over 35 years John has seen many changes to the sydney cycling scene and the local area.

“i grew up in ashfield just a few hundred metres from the shop and i’ve seen many changes in the local community. i’ve also seen many changes in the clientele,” John said.

“Back in the 70s and 80s, most of my customers were men and there wasn’t a huge variety of bike types. Now my customers are men, women and

tWo Bethlehem College students have won first place at a recent diving competition the NsW Combined Catholic Colleges competition (NsW CCC) at homebush recently.

milly marks achieved first place in both the 12-13 year’s springboard and open platform and has gone on to the NsW all schools and won the 12-year springboard competition.

Joining her in diving success was fellow student, 13-year-old Rhiannon Carr who won the 50m butterfly and took the silver in the 400m freestyle at the NsW CCC. Rhiannon won another silver in the 50m butterfuly at all schools.

Both milly and Rhiannon will compete in the National schools competition to be held in adelaide later this year.

Bethlehem divers bring home the medals

sydNey’s oldest freshwater pool at enfield has received a five star safety rating, placing it among the top aquatic facilities in sydney in a recent audit conducted by Royal life saving NsW.

The enfield aquatic Centre, which opened nearly 80 years ago, received perfect scores in pool supervision, learn to swim and administration. during last summer the addition of the new water play park and café was completed.
