NAIDOC Week NAIDOC Week Celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for 2020 is Always Was, Always Will Be recognises Australia’s First People who have occupied the continent and its adjacent islands for over 65,000 years. We are celebrating NAIDOC Week by raising the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, displaying the national NAIDOC poster in our classrooms, studying famous Indigenous Australian’s reading books by Indigenous authors and creating artworks. Let’s have a look at what our students have been up to:

First Nations people do not write down their stories and history using words; instead they pass their knowledge down through oral history and art. This is done through telling stories and painting pictures using symbols. These symbols have different meanings and when they are placed in a

specific order they can tell a story.

Did you know?

Here are some of the symbols used in artwork and story telling. Written by Jeffrey (Year 4) EAL/D Stage 2

Students have used some of these symbols to create their own artwork that tells a story. Written by Jeffrey (Year 4) EALD/D Stage 2

Students from Ms Reslan (FR Eagles), Ms Kypreos (IK Cockatoos) and Ms Sweeting (KS Swans) celebrated NAIDOC Week by creating a collective artwork.

Remembrance Day On the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month each year, Australia pauses in a one minute silence to commemorate those who have served and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Burwood Public School paused and reflected as a group of students from Mr Daley’s class addressed the school via the PA system to commemorate Remembrance Day. This year marked the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. A significant time in our history. Remembrance Day presents an opportunity for students to understand, highlight and appreciate the sacrifice of many during times of war. This was explored through poetry in many classrooms. Below is a POEM from Mithu (Year 5), student from Mr Daley’s class:

This very day we commemorate those who died The men who protected their land with respect

and pride Without their brave deeds and the thirst to

protect their home We wouldn’t have been able to let our voices

roam

We honour and respect those who died on this special day

For the people who made their country a great place to stay

If they hadn’t done their duty, imagine the threat

With their consideration and love, what an amazing example they set

That’s why we say, lest we forget

Written by Mithu (Year 5)

Early Stage 1 During term 4, kindergarten students learnt about the history of toys and their movement. They built toys that spin, float, bounce, roll or move in different ways. The students really enjoyed seeing the ways in which their toys float and spin! As part of NAIDOC week, some kindergarten students made boomerangs.

Early Stage 1 have also been committed to making our playground into a beautiful place. To deepen their understanding within the Science Learning, students helped plant native plants into our new raised garden beds. Kindergarten will continue to care for this space in the years to come—planting, watering, weeding and observing the changes. We’ve already noticed many tiny insects and changes to the plants over the last few weeks. We added stepping stones so that the children can walk around the garden and look at it more carefully.

CC orchids are learning about Tasmanian Devils. Let’s have a look at the questions that the students have come up with: Student: Evelyn 7 years Question: How many people are on the team to look after the Tasmanian devils? Answer: We have our keepers who look after them on a daily bases. Our keepers are a total of 5 people with another 3 in the Aussie Ark who help out also! - Students: Logu & Soohyun 8 Years Questions: What is a group of Devil’s called? Answer: They don’t have a name as they don’t spend time in groups. They need lots of space to breed and live. - Student: Shiloh 8 Years Question: Was it difficult to bring the Tasmanian Devil’s to Mainland Australia Answer: Not difficult but it sure had its challenges. When you put your mind to something its amazing what you can accomplish! Ms Clark

RM Sunflowers are exploring Living Things and doing an experiment with growing bean seeds. We have explored what happens to the seeds if we give them:

• Sun and water • Sun and no water • No sun and water • No sun and no water

We have also all grown our own seeds, some have grown and some have not. Unfortunately that’s how science works!

Stage 1 Years 1-2 have been learning about nature. Have a look at what the classes have been up to:

Through the program we are learning how to integrate rich and rewarding creative arts activities into our everyday learning. The staff involved in the ’Opera House Creative Leadership in Learning’ program are Ms Munsie, Mrs Wijngaarden, Ms Nicolaou, Ms Janes and Mr O’Neill. TO Phoenix (Stage 2) were asked to take part this year and we were joined by Kate Murphy from the Opera House who led us both in person and via Zoom as the students developed their dramatic performance and public speaking skills. We engaged in lots of role play games and made recordings of our hilarious character voices. The students challenged themselves, told stories, laughed a lot, encouraged each other and demonstrated wonderful team work skills. ‘Confidence’ became our key work as all the students became much more confident in their learning. It was a lot of hard work but the results were truly remarkable! We wrapped up the program with the AMAZING podcast on ‘Magic’ which was played throughout the school. Then it was time for the students to perform a range of tricks at our Magic Show to all the students at BPS. This was absolutely a big highlight of what has been a challenging year for everyone. I’d like to thank everyone involved in the program, in particular the hard working and incredibly talented students of TO Phoenix. To all the students at Burwood, maybe YOUR class will be lucky enough to take part in 2021! If it is then get ready for a really exciting time!

Mr O’Neill

Stage 2 This year Burwood Public School embarked on an exciting 3 year creative arts program with the team at the world famous Sydney Opera House.
