Boys come from all over Melbourne to join the Australian Boys Choir, which has 25-30 performing members with another 80-90
boys in training. Boys usually join around age eight and, on average, take two years to complete their training before being eligible to join the Australian Boys Choir.
Established in 1939, the secular Choir is a not-for-profit choral education leader allowing boys to realise their potential as skilled musicians. To ensure continuing excellence, the training program promotes vocal development, aural training and music reading, but also encourages the boys to build social and life skills. Regular weekly rehearsals are supplemented by intensive residential workshops, two weekends during the year and a week-long summer school.
e Choir was previously based in Surrey Hills, but moved to the Heritage Precinct of Boroondara in its 70th year. e relocation to the Auburn Uniting Church in Oxley Rd, Hawthorn, has provided the boys with access to spacious training facilities and a central location close to all forms of public transport.
e Australian Boys Choir prides itself on its leading musical education program, but also on the performance and touring opportunities provided to the boys.
e Choir has toured overseas 14 times - to Europe, North America and Asia - aiming to tour internationally every second year. In alternate years, interstate or regional tours are undertaken. Last year, the Choir undertook a very successful concert tour of Singapore and Malaysia, and this
year is preparing for a tour of South Australia. e Kelly Gang (an intermediate group for teenage boys with changed voices, named after the choir’s founder) have been invited to the Pemulwuy Festival in Brisbane as an interstate guest ensemble this year.
e Choir has worked under many international conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Jorge Mester, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Noam Sheriff, John Hopkins, Richard Divall and Sir Bernard Heinze, and with such great orchestras as the Israel Philharmonic and Melbourne Symphony.
e Choir has appeared frequently on national television and radio, with Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet, and provided music for the soundtracks of several internationally acclaimed films, including the Oscar-nominated film Elizabethand e Dish.
e boys perform a varied repertoire, including a large number of Australian works amongst sacred and secular music from five centuries of the choral classics. e Choir has also presented many world premieres and continues to commission new works, supporting up-and-coming Australian and international composers.
Founded by the late Vincent J. Kelly, who led the organisation until his death in 1971, the Australian Boys Choir has been led by only four artistic directors in its history. Current artistic director Noel Ancell is well-known throughout Australia and internationally as a conductor, composer and teacher. A former president of the Australian National Choral Association, he has conducted the Victorian Secondary Student Honour Choir

and the National Youth Choir of Australia. He has worked as a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor in Europe and the USA as well as throughout Australia. Noel was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2009 for service to choral music.
While the organisation’s major focus has been on boys with unchanged voices, a major development under Noel’s tenure in 1984 saw the establishment of an adult group. e Vocal Consort was formed to complement the performances of the boys by extending the range of repertoire possible and to provide role models and a career path for young male singers. Subsequently, the previously mentioned Kelly Gang was formed for teenage boys with changed voices.
e Australian Boys Choir could not operate without the support and enthusiasm of a great network of volunteers from the community and parents of current or previous singers. New volunteers are always welcome.
If your son loves to sing and you would like to see him
fully develop his musical potential, the Choir is seeking
students around eight years of age to start training in
Term 2, and will be holding auditions on Saturday,
March 19. Auditions are also held in June and

out and no light was visible from the outside. Once a
week, we had to take a bucket, fill it with sand or dirt
and shovel it on to the road. This procedure was done
to practice putting out incendiaries (bombs designed to
cause fires) in case of enemy invasion.
St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne opened a centre for
service men and women to meet and have a meal or just
a friendly chat. Serving meals at all times of the day and
evening was always busy; nevertheless it was enjoyable.
After I was married, with a young family, we moved to a
new sub-division in Ashburton. The roads were unmade,
there were no footpaths and no sewerage. It was a short
street with 10 families and 23 children living there. We all
helped each other – it was a great little community.
In the area, two new churches were built. They always
needed people to help. At the state school, the Mothers’
Club was always looking for new members to volunteer
their services. On Mondays, the mothers used to prepare
the bread rolls for the children’s lunches. It was a busy
time, but it gave the mums a chance to get to know one
another. There were weeks of preparation and planning
for the stalls at the school fetes. Each stall took over a
whole classroom. It brought out talents that some of
us did not know we possessed! None of us had much
money, but we had great companionship and enjoyment.
Moving on to secondary schools was also rewarding.
After 12 years on school committees and canteen
duty, I joined Meals on Wheels. It was a very worthwhile
organisation, with so many elderly people needing help. I
did this for 15 years and enjoyed every minute of it.
A friend asked me to join her branch of the Prince
Henry Hospital, so I became involved with a wonderful
group of ladies. We raised money for beds and
equipment, mainly by having functions in our own
homes. When the hospital closed we decided to join
friends of Monash Hospital Auxiliary. Over the years,
the numbers in our group diminished, as we aged. We
still had stalls and functions to raise money when we
could. Most of our members were now in their eighties.
Sadly, after 25 years with hospital associations, our group
had to disband.
My eldest daughter has worked for the Red Cross
for many years. I help whenever I can, mainly making
trauma teddies, some of which go to the Monash
Ambulance and Doctors for young patients.
It has been a wonderful journey – so rewarding. I feel
very humbled and blessed to have helped in some small
way, and to have met so many wonderful people along
the way, some of whom have become good friends.
Florence
Thank you ‘Florence’ for sharing your story, we
congratulate you on a lifetime of helping others. And
thank you to Suasn Webster for sourcing this story.
In Australia, we are very fortunate to have wonderful
volunteers working in many areas of our lives. They
give up their time to help others, and this saves the
government millions of dollars every year. Volunteering
can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. It helps give
other people a better quality of life and is a great way to
meet like-minded people.
One of our Burwood Bulletin readers, now in her
eighties, has written her experiences and memories of
volunteering during her life, starting in the late 1920s.
She writes:
My first encounter with charity work was when I was
six years of age. My father belonged to an organisation
called Toc H, which was a semi-religious order that did
voluntary work among the poor and the needy in the
inner Melbourne areas. It was during the Depression
and the government had not yet become involved in
doing things to help people. Our back veranda became
a storeroom, with bags of sugar, flour, rice and other
donated items. My mother and father gave my brother
and me the job of weighing the loose food items into
1lb lots, and pouring them into brown paper bags. My
mother then checked and sealed the bags. Sometimes I
was allowed to go out with my father to deliver hampers
and clothing at the weekend. A bakery donated some
bread, which was picked up along the way.
When I was eight years old, I joined ‘Mission Band’,
which was connected to the church. The girls in the
group made bead necklaces, knitted and sewed items
and also made up scribbling pads. These things were
placed into large boxes and sent to Oodnadatta Inland
Mission for aborigines. We were also involved in church
and school fetes.
When the war broke out in 1939, citizens were
involved in air raid precautions (ARP). Every street had
a night patrol to make sure that windows were blacked

The Whitehorse Orchestra has been part of the City of Whitehorse community for many years.he orchestra rehearses on Saturdays, 9am–noon,
at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre. We feel very fortunate to have such a lovely venue to rehearse in. We are a community orchestra and we welcome new players without auditioning, but we are conined to certain numbers in some sections such as lutes and oboes.
Gerald Keuneman has been Music Director of the orchestra for the past 21 years.
Gerald has guided and developed the Whitehorse Orchestra into a fully ledged classical orchestra of some standing. Gerald, who lives in Box Hill, is a very ine musician and through nearly 40 years of professional music-making has always had a great interest in promoting and supporting community music. He has for many years been involved in workshops for adult amateur musicians and in recent years he and the Whitehorse Orchestra have run the January Harrietville Music Camp. his week-long music camp, held in the foothills of Mount Hotham, was a huge success in 2010 and included many members of the Whitehorse Orchestra as students.
he orchestra performs three classical music concerts during the year and also one or two concerts of music for young children.

A group of locals has worked out environmentally friendly ways of meeting their own food needs.
The Damper Creek Collective Inc. is a group of locals from Ashwood and
surrounding suburbs who have banded together to enjoy sustainable local organic produce. As part of these efforts, the group has established a thriving relationship with a farm (and a farmer) in Daylesford.
Each Saturday, Rod May from Captain’s Creek delivers boxes of freshly picked, seasonal, organic fruit and vegetables for $30 a box, while Collective members work together to collect money for their boxes, place the orders and organise delivery.
Everyone sits back and enjoys a cup of tea with “their” farmer after collecting the boxes of fresh produce.
Each year, the Collective also organises four bulk pre-pay purchasing events of organic dry food stuff including flours, whole grains, olive oil, cereals, dried fruit and nuts and eco-friendly toilet paper, as well as bi-carb soda and organic Australian liquid castile soap so people can make their own cleaning products. People bring their own containers to the events to cut down on packaging waste. “It feels great to come home to your own supplies of food and not to be dependent on the supermarkets”, says collective founder and president Katie.
“Damper Creek Collective has been a fantastic opportunity to not only live my values by purchasing local sustainable food, it has also enabled a link for me and my husband into the community. Meeting on a Saturday morning with like-minded individuals has been a real pleasure. I enjoy riding my bike 15 minutes to co-op to collect my veggies and have a cuppa with other residents and our farmer.” Deanne (Chadstone resident)
Rod grows, harvests and delivers his organic seasonal vegies to the group every Saturday morning from February to June. ey get about 12kg of food straight from the ground - dirt, ladybugs and all - in a box which Rod collects again the following week. e wildlife guarantees the food is chemical free.
is is a community supported agriculture (CSA) model. CSA is where local farms connect directly with communities and reduce CO
2 from food transport and
communities get to appreciate where their food comes
from. “It is not often you get to meet the person who grows your food”, says local resident Moira.
e kids love farmer Rod. e Collective has organised several trips to the farm so the kids could experience a farm environment and see where their corn, beetroot, chestnuts and apples come from.
“It has been a dream come true to have our kids count the sleeps to vegie mornings so they can catch up with all the other collective kids in the neighbourhood, explore what surprises are in the boxes, paint, draw, eat everyone’s yummy home-made morning tea and play,” says Katie
“What we have found is that people want to connect and they want to do something healthy for their families and good for the planet by making these choices. We have discovered that reducing our addiction to oil and securing more sustainable food for our families is not only good for us and the planet but it is really good fun and easy.”
e group thinks vegie mornings are pretty special and in June last year, Sustainability
Victoria did as well by awarding the group the Melbourne Sustainable Cities Community Action Award for 2010.
“It was very gratifying for members to know that they had been recognised and appreciated for trying to make a difference,” Katie said. “It has given the group an opportunity to share the story of choosing to live this way and to encourage others to get out there and give it a go. ey haven’t looked back.”
FRUIT TREE HARVESTSe collective is also piloting a project where residents in the community share the produce from their trees in exchange for people doing the work of harvesting. e fruit is distributed among the community. So far fruit has gone to local churches for community lunches and to the Second Bite program in Camberwell, as well as to the Ashwood Children’s Centre. If you have a neglected fruit tree you would like help with and are willing to share your produce then please contact the collective.
People are welcome to come along to the Ashwood Children’s Centre, Yooralla St, Ashwood, on Saturdays at 10am to have look or sign up for a vegie box. People who want to be involved can contact Moira 0418 101 167 or Jodie on 9807 9417, or register your interest in any of the collective’s activities email [email protected]

Anzac tiles/wafers and Anzac biscuits are often mistakenly thought to be the same biscuit. However, according to the Australian War Memorial, they are two completely different delicacies. The Anzac tile, supplied to our WWI soldiers, was intended as a bread substitute and was an extremely hardtack biscuit with a long shelf life. In fact, they were so hard they were often affectionately known as bullet-proof biscuits. Some soldiers preferred to grind them up and eat them as porridge. For the recipe go to www.awm.gov.au/encyclopedia/anzac/biscuit/recipe.asp
Far more palatable were Anzac biscuits. It is said that wives and girlfriends sent Anzac biscuits to soldiers abroad. They were popular as they tasted so good but also travelled well, particularly as no eggs are used in the recipe. The biscuit later became popular on the home front for fundraising.

Graham Watt MPState Member for Burwood
Graham Watt recently spent time in the flood affected areas around Cohuna in Northern
Victoria with the Red Cross on 22 January. He assisted with the Red Cross in handing out meals to people in need along with helping in the back-breaking work of sandbagging in Cohuna.
Graham said it was heartening to see people donating or providing assistance to flood victims. He urged all Victorians to either donate to the Red Cross
appeal or volunteer their time to assisting with the Red Cross appeal. e website is www.redcross.org.au/default.asp
Other than assisting flood victims, Graham would like to ensure that whilst he is the Member for Burwood a number of key election promises such as law and order, public transport and schools are delivered to the people of Burwood.
A local, Graham lives in Ashburton with his wife Maria. He completed a Bachelor of Business from Edith Cowan University and has worked in the retail sector for much of the past 15 years. He was the owner/operator of a mobile phone retail store in the late 1990s and was a sales representative and executive for four years. In 2002, Graham started his own small business as a carpet cleaner, and it’s as a small business owner that he gained an appreciation of the importance of small and medium business to the local economy.
Graham has been a member of a number of local community organisations. Some of these include the Ashburton Support Services Committee of Management, the Inner-East Community Health Service, the Box Hill Athletic Club, the Friends of Wattle Park and has been a committee member of St Michael’s Parish School’s Parents and Friends Association. Graham is currently a sponsor of the Eastern Lions soccer club.

Barking up the Right TreeBy Carrie Simmons
A volunteer program assisting the elderly and disabled to care for their
Australians love their pets, statistics saying that more than 63 per cent are pet owners. e benefits of pet ownership are well recorded,
proven to improve both the physical and emotional health of pet owners.
But what happens when the owners become aged or infirmed and are no longer able to adequately tend to their pets? A real concern given the growth of Australia’s ageing population.
A great initiative is Here2Help Pets. e program which started in 2009, operates from the Power Neighbourhood House in Ashwood. e program is designed to assist people to look after their pets. e clients typically have mobility issues due to age or a disability which means they are unable to meet all their furry friend’s needs. Here2Help Pets matches them with pet-loving volunteers who can assist them to fill this gap. Some of the jobs include walking pets, assisting with grooming, providing transport to the vet or professional groomer and cleaning litter trays, bird cages or bedding.
e owners are relieved their pets are getting all the attention they need as for many it can be distressing if their pet isn’t receiving adequate care and exercise, particularly as the pet gives them so much in terms of companionship. e pet owners also enjoy their new found friendship with the volunteer. Program coordinator, Leonie explains that often this may be the only contact they have with another person during the week.
Volunteers enjoy forming a friendship with the pet owner and for those unable to have a pet themselves, get the positive benefits of spending time with an animal.
e program is looking for people who need the services of Here2Help Pets. If this isn’t you, think about your neighbours or family and friends in the area who may need this service. And, of course, volunteers are needed to help with the animals.
e program currently has many pet owners and volunteers, with a growing waiting list. However, the program is currently under threat from other quarters. Funding, originally provided by Home and Community Care (HACC) and Department of Planning & Community Development (DPCD) expires in May and for the program to successfully continue another benefactor must be sourced.
e ability to keep a pet has widespread benefits to the community. e pet owners have improved health, reducing the load on the public health system. Pet owners, due to improved health, also wish to stay in their homes rather than live in aged care facilities. With the increasing aged population in Australia, these are great benefits to the public purse and all the more reason why funding needs to be found.
ree councils in the Melbourne Metropolitan area - Knox, Balwyn and Port Phillip - have funding for these programs. e continuing success of these programs is evidence that with secure funding, the Ashwood Here2Help Pets
can also flourish.

bad enough, but we were on the 44-hour week so work started at 7.30am. The Railways sold a Workers Weekly ticket at a special price which was invalid after 8.10am. Many workers rode their push bikes to the station on Sunday in order to buy the weekly ticket. This was the start of the learning process.
Some skill was needed when the train came into the platform. Carriages were labelled in classes: First or Second. Some had sections for smokers, so picking the right spot to stand was essential. As all doors on the train were sliding; ventilation was a matter of choice. There were no accidents, as I recall, despite the dangers. Your trouser legs got a fair share of water, however, on wet days.
Cheltenham Station was a star. The station master lit a ire in the ireplace of the waiting room on bleak days. A six-person small bus that ran to the beach was parked outside. Telephone calls were still through an operator. What a treat it was to travel First Class with grand padded green seats instead of the sturdy leatherette skimpy ones stuffed with coconut ibre.
Spaced between passengers trains were nifty Parcel Vans used by the local shop keepers. The Railways issued their own stamps. The wrapping paper was kept as it was
of good quality and inished up around a pair of jeans at the menswear shop. Jeans were considered as working clothes.
There was always plenty for people to see as the trains sped along the paling fences, although some privacy was maintained by the many peppercorn trees planted by the Railways. The Hanging Gardens of Heyington are special still.
The Station staff was about ive. The man in the signal box shut the gates across the road at Elsternwick when the train left Melbourne … not true of course! The ticket man worked behind a wire screen and needed a keen knowledge of the network.
The oficer at the entrance gate to the platform was in control as far as whether you made it or had to catch the next train, as he also collected tickets. He also signaled the train rear guard with a lag or whistle. This guard in turn signalled the driver of the train with a lag and with agility got back on board again.
The father of the house was called The Breadwinner, going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. He walked to the station to save the tram fare and wore the clothes of the time: a three-piece suit, a felt hat, maybe a tie and carried a traditional bag. The heart of industry was across Melbourne so train travel was the way to go in those days.

As Anzac Day approaches it seems timely to tell our readers about a new book compiled by Yvonne Fitzmaurice:Alwyn Terence Till - A Brave Australian Airman A summary of his letters (1942-1944)
Author: A.Y. Fitzmaurice
The author of these letters was Alwyn Till,
a well-respected young man who lived in
Mitcham with his mother and younger sister. His
father was an ex 1st AIF serviceman who died at an
early age when Alwyn was still a schoolboy
Alwyn volunteered for the RAAF and started his
service life in January 1942. After one year’s training
he became an observer/navigator and was sent to
England via the USA.
He flew in Bomber Command and became a
Pathfinder navigator. During one of these raids
over Germany, his aircraft was shot down over the
Ardennes, Belgium. Alwyn was the only survivor
of a crew of seven. He was rescued by the Belgian
Maquis and while waiting for repatriation through
the underground went on an ambush with them
and was killed. He was 23 years old.
Alwyn’s letters make interesting reading because
he describes in often humorous detail his RAAF
training, his ambition to do well, the countryside
he saw and his impressions about the people he
met. Noticeably, there is a change in his style of
writing as he progresses from being a carefree
young man to one who faces the realities of war.
e little blue book of 40 pages may be bought for
$5 from the Whitehorse Historical Society Inc.,

Tribute to Bernice Ruth Jenkins (nee Jones) OAM14 August 1919 – 22 November 2010
Bernice was the eldest daughter of the late Rosanna and Joseph Jones. Always a proud Australian, Bernice gave charitable service to the community throughout her life.
During WWII, Bernice served as a wireless telegraphist with the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) and then later, with her lifelong commitment to others, she was District Commissioner of Girl Guides in Melbourne and the Gold Coast, Queensland.
As District Commissioner of the Girl Guides in Melbourne, Bernice, as a true leader, soon encouraged her daughters to follow in her footsteps as Brownies and then as Girl Guides.
In more recent years, Bernice became involved with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in the role of Victorian Auxiliary Coordinator. She was instrumental in starting the many Victorian auxiliaries and was a dedicated supporter for over 20 years. In addition to her position, Bernice was always busy knitting tea cosies and various other garments such as baby jackets. She also made RFDS hand towels and dolls dressed as RFDS doctors, nurses and pilots. Christmas cards and other greeting cards were also taken with her to various functions to raise money for the RFDS.
A few years ago, Bernice left her home in Blackburn to take up residence at the Hawthorn Village Hostel in Bright to be closer to her daughter, Margaret, who nurses at the Bright Hospital. Bernice enjoyed living at the hostel and was particularly pleased her treasured companion, pet cat Daisy, was allowed to join her.
Bernice was an inspiration to all who knew her.
A gathering to celebrate the life of Bernice was held on December 17 for family and friends at the East Malvern RSL. e gathering donated about $1000 to the RFDS.

to her new role at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre, an artistic and cultural hub within the City of Whitehorse.
“As artist in residence, Nikita will spend much of her time working with members of the community to explore past and present imagery to create an artwork that will be exhibited as part of the centre’s 21st birthday celebrations in October,” Cr Chong said.
e centre is home to a variety of local arts and community groups, including the Alcove Art Shop. It is a meeting place where people from all walks of life can come together to experience and enjoy the arts. Art classes and workshops are on offer throughout the year for people of all ages.
Ms Burt, who specialises in charcoal drawing, paper-cutting and textiles, will also spend time creating a series of artworks to be exhibited at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre’s gallery and other venues across Melbourne.
Ms Burt said she was excited to take on the role and looked forward to the year ahead.
“e centre has some amazing artists and programs and I am looking forward to meeting and learning with them. I feel really honoured to be looking after the loft studio this year and I can’t wait to start working in it!” she said.
Ms Burt studied fine arts in Mildura until 2006, through Latrobe University, before moving to Melbourne to study with the Melbourne Institute of Experiential and Creative Arts in erapy.
Cr Chong said the Whitehorse community would be able to learn a lot from Ms Burt, who has worked around the country on various artistic projects.
“Nikita spent several months volunteering in central Australia at the Warlukulangu Art Centre in Yuendumu,
Northern Territory and she has experience in community arts in north and west Melbourne through e Centre on Errol Street, North Melbourne,” Cr Chong said.
“We look forward to working with her in what is sure to be a very busy 2011.”

Joey Scouts is the first section of scouts for boys and girls aged six and seven years old. It is a gentle introduction to a world of challenges and adventures through Scouting with fun and friendship the main aim.
In a fun, inclusive program trained Joey Leaders teach the Joeys life skills such as caring and sharing, socialising, increased environmental awareness, responsibility and basic adventure-based activities. is is done through a varied program which includes games, craft activities and stories.
Scouting complements a Joey’s schooling, extending each child’s understanding of the world around them. Child psychologist, Michael Carr-Gregg, a strong advocate of Scouting, has expressed the importance of the movement in helping to develop a child’s sense of purpose and belonging. is was also reflected at last year’s Joey Scout Leader Conference, which focused on the importance of developing resilience in children and helping them overcome the obstacles and challenges presented in life.
Not that the kids would be aware of any of this. A typical term program at 1st Bennettswood Joey Mob included Spooky Night, Around the World, Robots and Dinosaurs, Bring Your Dad night, a sleepover and a visit to the Burwood Fire Station.

The Lions Club
of Boroondara
Central Op Shop
has moved from
Wattle Park to
Burwood Village,
where a loyal
band of volunteers
continue to raise
funds for those in
need.
For more than 40 years, the Ben Lion op shop traded
in Wattle Park and was a vital and loved part of the
community. In 2010 the shop was sold and it became
necessary to look for new premises. It was hoped Lions
Club could find a site in the vicinity of the old shop, so
that their band of faithful volunteers and customers could
find them not too far away. After a search of five months,
the new site was found, in the Burwood Village.
Almost all the volunteers can continue to work in the
new shop, so when you call in you will see familiar faces
no matter what day you visit. Many volunteers have been
with the op shop for more than 30 years.
e shop has lots of wonderful things donated by the
local community, who have been unbelievably supportive
of the new venture. Everyone in the community has
welcomed Lions to the village and helped the change to
go smoothly. As well as the original customers and donors,
Lions now has a wonderfully generous bunch of new ones.
e layout of the new shop enables Lions to take small
to medium size furniture as well as the usual clothing, bric-
a-brac and electrical goods. ey ask that donors bring
goods (in reasonable condition) to the shop only during
business hours: Monday to Friday, 10.30am-4.30pm and
Saturday, 9.30am-12.30pm.
All net proceeds from the shop are used to help
people in the local and wider community who would
not otherwise receive assistance. e Lions Club of
Boroondara Central donates about $55,000 to the
community annually. For example, assisting with
equipment and exercises for children with cerebral palsy,
fitting out a kitchen for meals on wheels, a gazebo for
residents in a dementia unit, scholarships for young people
with learning disabilities, Trauma Teddies for the local
Camberwell Police and a multitude of other needy causes.
In addition, Lions sponsors Youth of the Year contests
for public speaking and Youth Exchange programs
whereby students from Australia exchange with students
in New York for six weeks each year.
˜Lions Find New Den In Burwood Village˜If you would like to give back to your community and
become involved in a practical way in Lions activities,
why not look at joining the Lions Club of Boroondara
Central where you will make a huge circle of friends in
your community. Lions need more members to continue
the good work. Please contact Wayne on 0403 047 483,
Margaret on 0409 389927 or Pauline on 9836 0541.
e Lions Club of Boroondara Central Op Shop is at
1350C Toorak Rd, Camberwell (Burwood Village, next to
Jager Carpets, 500m from Warrigal Rd).

THE WAY OF THE CROSS
On Good Friday, April 22, a group of people will be gathering in the morning at St Scholastica’s Catholic Church to participate in the Way of the Cross. ey will walk to St omas’ Anglican Church at 44 Station St, Burwood. People will take turns carrying the cross. Along the way the group will stop at six points, say a prayer and sing a hymn. e Way of the Cross started around 1960 and has been an annual event ever since. If you would like to join in, please be at the carpark at St Scolastica’s, 348 Burwood Hwy, Bennettswood at 11am on Good Friday. All welcome. Enquiries: St Scholastica’s office .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 9808 1006.
Welcome to another year. We have had
something of a roller coaster summer however we have at least had some good
rain around here. I am sure many people are enjoying the fruit of their toil in their garden – I know I am doing so.e Arcade
ere is a vacancy in the Arcade as Beautiful Me relocated up the road to one of the new shops by the railway line. e shop is a picture and I hope the move will prove fortuitous for them.
e trio of shops comprises of Beautiful Me,Wynn Nail Spa and the Milk Cloud Cafe which is already proving popular with the locals.
It will be interesting to see who will move into the former Beautiful Me shop in the Arcade. Your scribe hopes that the shop will not be empty too long. e Arcade has built a reputation amongst Ashburton’s shopping public and we want the vibe to keep up.
e former KFC site, which has been an eyesore for some time now, sports six modern looking shops just waiting for new traders to move in. I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of establishments take up on this site.E & S Trading. e store has moved the showrooms to the Chadstone Lifestyle Precinct, adjacent to
Harvey Norman on Warrigal Rd, Holmesglen. Due to their increasing range, their former premises didn’t accommodate the showroom and the office. Ashburton will miss this E& S who have been an institution since 1962. I hope the move will prove to be a good one for this long established Ashburton landmark store.
By the time you read this dear reader, the circus will have come and gone from Ashburton. Of course, I’m referring to the Ashburton Festival, held annually at the end of February. I’ll tell you how it went in the next issue of the Burwood Bulletin.
And if you like fairs – Ashburton Primary School’s is being held Sunday, March 27, 10am–4pm. ere will be fantastic rides, a variety of stalls, music, entertainment, a wide choice of food and drink and this year there will be visits from the Snake Handler and children’s author, Andy Griffiths – bring along a book for him to sign.

Volunteer AllianceVolunteer Alliance Ashburton is a recruitment point for volunteers wishing to make a positive difference in their local Ashburton/Glen Iris/Ashburton areas. A new Volunteer Coordinator has commenced in 2011 – Margaret Campion. Margaret has previously worked for other respected not-for-profit organisations such as Vision Australia, the National Trust, and World Vision. In her role with Volunteer Alliance Ashburton she recruits and supports volunteers for local agencies - Ashburton Support Services and its Welfare Parade Opportunity Shop, Samarinda Lodge Aged Care (including Elsie Salter House Respite Centre), and Alamein Neighbourhood Learning Centre. We have a great variety of volunteer roles within our Volunteer Alliance in Ashburton, and it is exciting when we can match the right volunteer with the right role. Everyone benefits. As we’ve seen with the terrible Queensland and Victorian floods, people want to help, they really want to do their bit for community service and make a difference for others in their own communities. At Ashburton we have services that support local residents, who want to stay socially connected, or build their fitness, or return to the workforce, or just share some fun at Line Dancing, Scrabble or Tai Chi. We’ve had volunteers ranging from a 13 year old violinist to an 80+ year old ‘meeter and greeter’. Each volunteer helps tremendously. We need volunteers now for diverse roles in 2011 such as:A Bingo caller for Friday afternoons, a marketing consultant, an endorsed licence bus driver, car drivers and kitchen assistants for Meals on Wheels, group outings assistants, opportunity shop sales assistants, community gardeners, publicity officer, an Ebay expert to put our Op Shop online, an English or ESL teacher/tutor for our Neighbourhood House and social support assistants!A volunteer can make a huge difference in the life of another local person. All it takes is a phone call and a chat to join our friendly, motivated team. If you would like to volunteer for just a few hours a week – phone me on . . . . . . . . .9885 3815
