from the editorWelcome to the November edition of LocalReach. With Christmas fast-approaching there is no shortage of events being organised during the next month. We have information about composting from Somerset Waste Partnership, local plays taking place in West Huntspill, Berrow and the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre, and this year’s carnival is taking place on Monday 3rd November. The carnival relies on public support and generosity to keep the event running, and I am sure there will be no shortage of entries for this year’s carnival. With the autumnal months ahead of us, take advantage of what local groups are offering, whether it is a cuppa at the community centre, or monthly Bazaar in Brent Knoll. If you have details of events during December, please forward by email.December issue deadline is Wednesday 12th November 2014Jacqui strong, LocalReach Community [email protected]

Highbridge festival of arts annual general meeting After some nine years in post, the General Secretary, Maureen Phillips stood down. She was thanked for the hard work and organisation put in during those years. Maureen has been replaced as General Secretary by John Page. The Chair, Denise Berry, also stood down and was replaced by the Vice Chair, Trudi Thatcher.

Marilyn Banks has added the duties of Vice Chair to those of Dance Section Secretary. We also lost, for business reasons, our excellent Publicity Officer, Greg Fear. The 68th Festival takes place from Thursday 5th March 2015 until Saturday 14th March 2015; the venues will be The Princess, Burnham-on-Sea, Highbridge Community Hall and St. Andrew’s Church, Burnham-on-Sea. It is expected that the 2015 Syllabus will be available mid-October, with a closing date for entries of Friday 9th January 2015. Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to the venues, our sponsors, our advertisers, our helpers and, of course, those wonderful people who enter the various disciplines.

smoke-free play areasSigns designating play areas as smoke-free zones are being rolled out across Sedgemoor after the District Council declared its commitment to protect residents from the harmful effects of tobacco. Sedgemoor was one of the first district councils in the country to sign the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control, to underline its determination to tackle harm from smoking. As part of its commitment, the Council wants to make sure children do not have to witness and breathe in smoke when they enjoy playing in the fresh air in Council-owned playgrounds. Signs, which have been funded by Smoke Free Southwest, have been going up over the past few weeks and are nearly complete across all Sedgemoor parks. Councillor John Swayne, who represents Sedgemoor on the county’s Health and Wellbeing Board, and Chairman, Councillor Peter Downing watched one of the signs being put in place at Bower Park in Bridgwater, alongside Parks Officer, Scott Mason and a representative from Smoke Free Southwest. Chairman Councillor Peter Downing said: “Smoking remains one of the major threats to health. It is important that Children are protected from people smoking around them whilst they play.”

calming tips, for our firework frenzied pets….Atirakin Pet Taxi & Home Dog Boarding can offer most Pets transport to their Vets, Boarding Kennels, Groomers, and Catteries etc. For busy workers, pensioners or housebound we can take your pet to the vet for you, giving it our full attendance, returning your pet home after appointments, caring for all pets as if they are our own. We are Defra Certificated and animals are insured.

November is one of the most stressful months for our pets, whereas our time zone changes immediately; our pet’s dinnertime, loo & sleep time body clock does not! Over-stimulation by firework noise, on unprepared acute hearing, can easily frenzy them! Imagine yourself, hungry, commencing your dinner and out of the blue you are bombarded with the noise of a warzone, with no explanations; you may just imagine your pet’s mind-set? So here are some tips that work for our pets and guests. Try to feed and toilet them an hour earlier than GMT for first two weeks after the clocks go back. Avoid reacting to your pet’s anxiety as that reinforces their fear; encourage a pacing animal to huddle with you and family members. In the wild they would use dens, warrens, ditches and squeeze into the smallest of crevices, wrapping them in a loose cocoon made from light blanket can replicate this. Or, make a den with an indoor kennel, or cardboard boxes in a closed room; bundling structures with unwashed garments, the pheromones from unclean clothes to dogs and cats, especially those used to sleep and relax in, are reassuring, and reinforcing your leadership and protection. Talking loudly when dogs are agitated, makes them believe that you are barking and frightened too; slip their lead on, holding the lead loosely in your hand, will often work as a comforter to them. Good luck. Atirakin 01278786836 www.atirakin.co.uk

road smart: scheme to reduce road casualtiesIn just one year in Avon and Somerset, 452 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads. Around one third of these were young people aged 17 to 24. To help reduce this figure we have launched a free education course for drivers, and learner drivers, in the force area. Road Smart is available for all drivers, but we

are especially keen to encourage young drivers to attend the session. The course has been specially created on behalf of Avon and Somerset Police. It aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists’ existing driving knowledge and experience.• 95% of all collisions are caused by human error.• 1 in 5 new drivers will have a crash within their first six months of driving.• Road crashes are the biggest single killer of young people in the UK.

Some insurance companies will offer a discount to young drivers who have completed the workshop. The course is a one-off interactive session and will be held at venues across the force area. It is based on the successful training package that is used for driver awareness courses nationally. Supt Ian Smith said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from a free course that could be a life-saving opportunity. The training will be delivered by the TTC group, a professional road safety education provider. The national course this is based upon is widely hailed as excellent and thought-provoking and really does influence driver behaviour.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said, “I am delighted Avon and Somerset Police have designed a unique road safety package to further educate all road users, but particularly young drivers."

Courses can be booked in advance, and will be running until early 2015. There are two versions - one for young drivers (aged 17 to 24) and one for other drivers. If you are, or know of, a young driver who would like to join this course, or you are aged 25 or over and interested in attending, go to www.roadsmart.org for further details.

axbridge Blackberry carnivalCurtain Call are very proud to have won the 'best open walking entry' again, with our showpiece 'Oz-tastic'. The carnival's theme this year was 'The Musicals' which is something Curtain Call is passionate about, so we decided to perform a medley of three Oz-based musicals, the classic 'Wizard of Oz', The West End smash hit 'Wicked', and the disco version 'The Wiz'. The students danced, sang and acted their hearts out to a substantial audience that had lined the route for the event. Local MP Tessa Munt was one of the judges and thought the munchkins were adorable, and was last seen humming 'Over The Rainbow'.

The carnival processes through the square at Axbridge, and then makes a pit-stop at Axbridge Court Nursing Home, where all our budding ballerinas showed off their pointed toes, twirls and curtseys to the enthralled residents! Students were aged from 4 years upwards and were from both our Axbridge branch and Highbridge Studio. "It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to dress up and show off their talents, and we are thrilled to have another trophy to polish!”, says Principal, Patricia Ham. "We certainly didn't expect to win again, although pulled out all the stops for a fabulous display. It's thanks to the support of parents, dedication of staff and students who rose to the occasion!" The students love to entertain, so if there are any interested children who would like to be involved with these activities, don't hesitate to get in touch - you can always come and try a class free of charge!!

West Huntspill playersThis year’s Autumn Production presented by The West Huntspill Players, is the Farce written by Eric Chappell ‘Haywire’ (production rights with Samual French Ltd). Initially, an informal meeting will be held at The Dunstan House, Love Lane in Burnham-on-Sea on Monday 1st December at 7.30pm, and women of all ages are invited to come along for an introduction into the fun and friendship you can have as a member of the W.I. The modern W.I. has lots of fun and gets involved in all sorts of activities. There are also campaigns on important issues such as more midwives, better food labelling and saving the bees. And to make it extra special it is the W.I.'s 100th Anniversary in 2015, so it is a very exciting time be part of the largest woman's voluntary organisation in the UK which currently has 212,000 members in around 6,600 W.I.s. To find out more take a look at www.thewi.org.uk.

The afternoon W.I. group will continue to meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 2pm at the Community Centre and all are welcome. Just come along and you will be made very welcome and enjoy a cup of tea and hopefully learn something from our speaker. The November meeting of the afternoon group is on Tuesday 25th November at 2pm and the speaker is Nicky White and she will be giving us a Body Shop Demonstration. We welcome any men who wish to come along as visitors and listen to any of the speakers (but maybe not very interesting for them this month!) but unfortunately men cannot become members. For more information please contact The President, Brenda Adams on 01278 781771 or go to our website: www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk.

a new way to complain!Recently I found myself e-mailing a large mail-order company to chase up a refund. Whilst my e-mails were answered politely, no action happened for nearly a month, so I decided to send a message to the company via Twitter.

This resulted in the refund being processed within a few hours of the message being received. If you do find customer service departments are not responding adequately, using Twitter to complain seems to get results!

For those who don’t know, Twitter is way of both finding out information that individuals or companies have divulged, and also to send messages either directly to individuals or companies, in the hope that they respond.

To find out more, visit this link https://support.twitter.com/ and click “Getting started with Twitter” for more information. Once you have joined (it’s free), you can search for and “follow” anybody from friends to celebrities or organisations.

You will then receive regular messages through Twitter from those that you “follow”. You can also send messages to other Twitter users – give it a try, you may be surprised at the response. Is your anti-virus up to the job? Recently we have visited many new customers who have been badly infected by numerous viruses, many of which hide covertly, and quite often are not picked up by anti-virus software.

If your computer is running slow or just not running as it should be, it may be worth having an engineer visit for an hour to go through the machine and look to improve the way it works. We often visit people who have not had their computers looked at professionally at all, so if you fall in to this category, please see our advert on the same page. Often one visit by an IT professional can work wonders for a computer. As well as catering for home computers, we also service small business, so if your work machine is not working as would like, please get in touch as we can help. community centre coffee morningsPlease accept our appreciation to the readers of this magazine for supporting us so enthusiastically at our September coffee morning. The money raised will be a welcome contribution to the latest big repair bill at the Centre; the roof has been repaired and will now definitely keep out the rain! And we have even put away the buckets! Can we expect the same support in November and December?

The next coffee morning will be on Saturday 1st November, but advance warning that our Christmas Coffee Morning will be on Saturday 6th December. Please put that date in your diary because it's going to be the one you won't want to miss. Not only do we want to raise a nice lot of money, but we want to make it even more enjoyable than usual and we will also be selling the last tickets in our now famous Christmas Draw and revealing the lucky winners! Please come and support us - we need you!

Neighbourhood planningThe plan area has now been agreed and covers all of Burnham and Highbridge and the part of the Burnham Without Parish to the west of the M5. This is the local area in which future development will take place. The steering group has spent the last few months raising its profile by attending events.

An initial leaflet to all households explaining the process is in preparation - as is a website. We already have a Facebook Page ‘Neighbourhood Plan for Burnham and Highbridge’, and the group is now beginning to turn its attention to planning topics. The biggest topic of all will undoubtedly be that of new housing. We're looking at what is required up to 2032. The overall figure will be set by Sedgemoor's structure plan but is likely to be of the order of 1200-1500 units on greenfield sites - recent developments in Highbridge having utilised all the major brownfield sites in the area. What we'll be trying to do in the plan is to work out the best solution for this new housing and answer questions such as: Where? What sort? What infrastructure? We will work closely with Sedgemoor's officers in order to build on their expertise and consult widely on the options available. In order to start this process off, we are planning a guided walk around the area – with an opportunity to look at it with fresh eyes and then follow it up with a workshop where we can share experiences. Dates for these events have yet to be finalised but they will probably take place in October/November. We want to give us many people as possible the chance to take part, so any feedback on these times would be appreciated.

We are working on carrying out a similar process in Highbridge Town Centre in the near future. There will be other topics to consider over the course of the next year and we would be delighted to hear from you as to what you think are the important issues, as well as any comments you have. There will be further opportunities to volunteer with the Neighbourhood Planning Process in the future and we would welcome any offers of support.

Burnham district pantomime societyBDPS is moving into a new panto year, having had its AGM in September. The officers and committee remain the same as last year and they are all committed to having another good and successful year. Rehearsals have now started for our next production Sinbad, to be staged at the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre in January 2015; the early signs are looking encouraging, with our young cast showing a lot of enthusiasm under the directorship of Lorna Blair. Scenery painting is underway by members of the society, and stunning costumes are being created by Denise and her team. Other heads of departments are busy preparing for the forthcoming production.

What we know we are going to be short of this year is back stage crew and a stage manager who has some experience, as our usual team are mostly fully committed with new employment or education, or are acting in the panto. If there are any potential new members out there who are interested in the back stage happenings, do let us know. Of course there are many other areas of pantomime you can participate in too. The Pantomime Society have an active Social Section, enjoying skittles at the Enmore Inn, and kurling at the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre. The Annual Christmas Dinner is on Saturday 20th December at the Beachcomber. Subscription for members is £10, which starts at the beginning of the new panto year, and can be paid at rehearsals or the monthly meetings, on the first Friday starting 7.30pm at The Princess Theatre. New members are always welcome. Tickets for Sinbad 2015 will be on sale at the box office or online there from November.

They would make a fabulous Christmas present to any family. Oh yes they would! More information of times and prices from the Princess box officewww.theprincesstheatre.co.uk, or ring 01278 784464.

charity in crisis – sounds and Voices talking NewspaperThe Burnham branch of Sounds and Voices Talking Newspaper faces the prospect of closure. The Talking Newspaper has been serving the blind and partially-sighted people of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge for over 29 years. Twenty years ago there were over 120 people receiving the fortnightly news on tapes and now on computer sticks, and over the years has now fallen to 20.

With 20 listeners the viability of the sounds and voices branch becomes untenable. The playback facilities, tape recorders for tapes and now Boombox playback facilities for sticks are provided free by the charity to each of its customers. The Post Officer delivers the recordings in characteristic yellow pouches, which are free to the news recipients, who after listening to the recording return in the yellow pouch to the studio. The Charity has now reached a point where there are twice as many people producing the recordings as those receiving them. It is hard to accept that in our local community, those individuals with sight limitations has fallen to a very low number. Owing to data protection, details of people who could benefit from the service cannot be shared by doctors, opticians etc to the charity. If you know someone who could benefit from the service that is offered by the Sounds and Voices Talking Newspaper, please contact either 01278 788450 or 01278 794836 for more details.

get that garden tidy! future fuel: composting will produce something great for next year’s plants - By Nick caterWith Halloween just gone, Guy Fawkes and carnivals upon us, and Christmas round the corner, plenty of people in Burnham will being thinking about getting ready for winter and the festive season. In the garden, as growth slows and days get so short, it is about clearing beds, tidying greenhouses, and maybe some light mowing, hedge clipping or pruning. Your compost bin is the place for all but the largest, woodiest garden waste (take that to a recycling centre if not over four inches in diameter). In the warmth, damp darkness of the compost bin, the transformation can begin into a free much, fertiliser, and soil conditioner.

To help produce that helpful future garden ‘fuel’ to put nutrition back into your soil and retain moisture, do try adding a little shredded card to the mix and some foods: fruit and veg peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds and tea bags. In the house and garage, a quick sift and clear, or a deeper clutter bust, can turn up lots of items and materials that need sorting to ensure they are not wasted or end up in landfill. A set of boxes or bags can help decide what you want to repair, offer on Freecycle or donate to charity, recycle at the kerbside or recycling site, or even prepare to become Christmas gifts.

If you find anything to sell, I see that eBay and other online auctions are facing growing competition from Facebook ‘buy, sell, swap’ groups and classified advert sites like Gumtree, though the old postcard-in-a-window still works, as does a quick car boot sale when you have a lot. And for a bit of seasonal fun to come, what about giving away or swapping some of your finds, from hosting a swishing party for clothes, to a swap meet for household items? For more details of how to recycle more and waste less, including advice on composting, and how to order compost bins, please visit www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Nick cater is senior communications Officer at somerset Waste partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in somerset.

the Huntspill art group The group meets every other Wednesday afternoon in East Huntspill Village Hall, with doors opening at 1.30pm. The Art Group had the pleasure of a demonstration on acrylic techniques by Sue Hammond-Lovett at a previous art afternoon. This is one of many 'tutorials' we enjoy. We are also happy to have been invited to put on a display in the Art and Coffee Lounge at the Princess Theatre in December. Our Art Afternoons are enjoyed by all media artists (water colours, acrylic artists, oil painters, pastels etc), and we have a cupboard of materials for you to try, and experiment with. We also do our own mounts. Fees are only £3.50 per session, which includes use of materials and a cuppa! The club is open to all ages.
