DO NOW:Respond to the following in

your lab notebook-

Why does our society tend to use non-renewable resources as fuel instead of renewable ones?

What are the advantages?

What are the disadvantages?

Title

• On the top of the page in your lab note book add the title of this assignment– TITLE: 1.3 Burn A Nut

• Add this title to your TOC*

Remember: TOC= Table of Contents

Lesson Target

• Skip a line under the “DO NOW” and write “Lesson Target”

Lesson Target: Weigh the advantages and disadvantages of using different energy sources.

Notes

• Skip a line and Write “Notes”

• To survive, our bodies need energy!• 2 types of Energy Sources - food and fuel• Energy Transfer - the amount of energy

released can be determined mathematically; in the following Investigation, you will determine the amount of energy transferred by measuring the temperature of water.

VOCABULARY

• Skip a line and Write “Vocabulary”

• Energy is the ability to do work

• Potential Energy = stored energy

• Kinetic Energy = released energy

Page 7: Burn a Nut S&S 1.3. DO NOW: Respond to the following in your lab notebook- Why does our society tend to use non- renewable resources as fuel instead of.

VOCABULARY cont.

• Fuel - used to provide energy for tasks that are important

Fuels are either RENEWABLE or NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Page 8: Burn a Nut S&S 1.3. DO NOW: Respond to the following in your lab notebook- Why does our society tend to use non- renewable resources as fuel instead of.

VOCABULARY cont.

• RENEWABLE Resources - can be replenished in a single human lifetime [Ex. firewood]

• NON-RENEWABLE Resources - cannot be replenished in a single human lifetime [Ex. coal and gasoline]

Testable Question

Skip a line and write “Testable Question”

How does the [manipulated variable] affect the [responding variable]?

NOTE: You must fill in the manipulated and responding variables.

Testable Question

• How does the type of fuel used to heat water affect the amount of energy transferred?

Page 11: Burn a Nut S&S 1.3. DO NOW: Respond to the following in your lab notebook- Why does our society tend to use non- renewable resources as fuel instead of.

VARIABLES

• Controlled - at least 2 variables that will be kept the same during the Investigation

• Manipulated - the variable that is being changed in the Investigation

• Responding - the variable that is being measured in the Investigation

Page 12: Burn a Nut S&S 1.3. DO NOW: Respond to the following in your lab notebook- Why does our society tend to use non- renewable resources as fuel instead of.

Variables

• Controlled- Amt. of water, distance from flame

• Manipulated- type of fuel (nut)

• Responding- Amt. of energy released

PreLABs cont.

Skip 1 line and on the left margin write:

HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that if [manipulated variable] … then [responding variable]… because…

Page 14: Burn a Nut S&S 1.3. DO NOW: Respond to the following in your lab notebook- Why does our society tend to use non- renewable resources as fuel instead of.

Hypothesis

• It was hypothesized that if different fuels are burned, nuts and kerosene, then the _______ will have more energy as measured by the change in temperature over time, because_____________.

Procedures

• Skip a line and write “Procedures”

Page 16: Burn a Nut S&S 1.3. DO NOW: Respond to the following in your lab notebook- Why does our society tend to use non- renewable resources as fuel instead of.

Procedures

1. Determine the mass of a piece of foil. Add 2 grams of crushed nuts to your foil. Record the total mass on your Data Table.

2. Create a pile of nuts on the corner of your wire gauze.

3. Pour 100 mL of room temp. H2O into your can. Record the initial temp. on your Data Table.

Page 17: Burn a Nut S&S 1.3. DO NOW: Respond to the following in your lab notebook- Why does our society tend to use non- renewable resources as fuel instead of.

Procedures cont.4. Using a ring stand, set up your

can. [You may use a ring instead of a test tube clamp].

NOTE: The bottom of the can should hang 5 cm above the wire gauze.

5. As soon as the nut is lit, record the time (or start the stopwatch).

Page 18: Burn a Nut S&S 1.3. DO NOW: Respond to the following in your lab notebook- Why does our society tend to use non- renewable resources as fuel instead of.

Procedures cont.

6. Allow the nuts to burn until it goes out.

7. Record the highest temp. reached by the H2O in the can on your Data Table.

8. Calculate the change in temp. [ temp.△ ] of the H2O. Record on your Data Table.

Procedures cont.

9.Determine the mass of the burned nuts. Calculate the change in mass [ mass△ ] of the nut. Record on your Data Table.

10.If provided, record your data on the

Class Data Table.

Procedures cont.

11.Repeat the procedures for this

Investigation, using kerosene instead of a

nut.

NOTE: Allow the kerosene to burn for exactly 90 Seconds.
