Lisle for representing Burkhead at this year’s conference. I was asked by the Rev. Mike Bailey, our DS of the Yadkin Valley District to serve as one of the Tellers during the voting of the pastors for delegates to the General and Jurisdictional Conferences. I was honored to be asked to be a Teller, trust me it was a job and a half at the conference this year. We walked, ran, walked and ran during the voting of the pastors in the Western NC Annual Conference.
UPCOMING EVENTS FOR BURKHEAD CHURCH: August 6, 2019 - 6 to 8 pm our Annual National Night Out

The Summer children camp has started with Epiphany Lutheran Church. I pray that the young campers and staff will have a great summer camp this year at our church.
July 4th we will celebrate the birth of the United States of America. Enjoy this holiday and be safe on the 4th.
Continue to pray for our sick and shut in members of Burkhead, the community and the young who are being separated from their love ones at the borders. Remember my mother Dr. Nan P. Manuel in your prayers.
I am proud and excited about returning to Burkhead as your pastor for the conference year of 2019-2020. To God be the glory for all he has done and what he is going to do for the church as we enter the new conference year on July 1, 2019.
Please pray for our DS’s wife who had to have emergency surgery at the end of the Western NC Conference. I understand she is doing better resting at home in Kernersville.
May God continue to bless each of you and the USA. I love you.
The Rev. Dr. Carl Manuel, Jr.

From the Burkhead Prayer Team –
“First of all, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings
be made for all people…” (I Timothy 2:1)
Burkhead has a prayer team of 10-12 dedicated members who are committed to lifting up others in
prayer each week. We receive names through the Sunday worship service, phone calls, hospital
visits and YOU. You can ask that your prayer(s) be given to only the pastor, the pastor and prayer
team or have it placed in the Sunday bulletin. We want to try to maintain an
accurate and current list. As of July 1st, we will now place your request on
the prayer list for one month. Please let us know if your request becomes
long-term or especially if your prayer is answered. During the week, if you
have any additional prayer needs, please contact Joni Howell, the Prayer
Team Coordinator at 407-222-7409 or [email protected] or Darlene Davis,
You are aware that a group of us has been meeting the first and last Sunday of each month for
2+ years to make 100 sandwiches and bagging them with other items to make a meal.
H.O.P.E has been having fund raisers to raise capital for a new operations facility. The new facility
is in Kimberly Park, in the Boston-Thurmond neighborhood. Scott Best, the Executive Director,
informed me that hopefully they will be occupying the space by the end of July. He says "they are
excited for this milestone in our journey to make an impact on children's health and food insecurity
here in Winston-Salem. This will not only allow us to increase capacity for meals and fresh
produce, but also enable us to provide more educational and empowering opportunities to those
we serve”.
Scott is letting Burkhead know that there is an interior wall paint project needing to be completed
before moving in and needs volunteers for it. He is now planning on Saturday, July 13th, from
9 am to 12 pm. If you are interested and have some painting skills, please contact Scott directly
at [email protected] or at 336-816-0801 and he will give directions to the facility and answer any
other questions. Unfortunately, this would not be good fit for small kids. High school and up
would be great. Thank you.
National Night Out
The first Planning Meeting for our National Night Out on August 6th, from 6 - 8 pm, was held
Sunday, June 23rd, following worship. Twenty-one of us met to
begin to discuss and layout plans for a great event for the evening.
At any time, you wish to jump in and lend a helping hand, it would
be greatly appreciated. Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 6th
following worship. If you do not join us for the planning par t,
your help will be needed on August 6th to help set up, greet our
guests, serve food, take down, etc.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Jo Thomas and Beth Dixon are in the discussing and brain-storming phase with plans to implement
in the fall. We haven’t decided to be just be a Prayer Shawl Ministry. One thought we have on the
table is to be a Prayer Team and in addition to prayer shawls include other causes such as scarfs for
the youth at Children’s Home and/or homeless. Anyone interested in being part of planning, let us
know.
Outreach Opportunities
“Whatever you do,
work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for men,
since you know that you will receive
an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.
It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Colossians 23:23-24
