SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection consists of records of the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, 1824-1939, and documents the interaction between the United States government and the various tribes. It also contains records relating to intertribal matters. Most of the records are on microfilm and were purchased from the National Archives from their collection NARS RG075. Other records were donated to the archives, or were selected by James C. Olson in 1955 for microfilming from holdings of the National Archives. Reels are numbered consecutively as they are received. They are described in the inventory in the subgroup to which they relate but roll numbering is not consecutive within each subgroup. The collection is arranged in six subgroup: (1) Incoming Correspondence of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, 1824-1880, from other agencies and superintendents; (2) Outgoing correspondence of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, 1824-1840; (3) Annual Reports of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, 1845-1900; (4) Miscellaneous Reports and Correspondence, 1855-1897; (5) Agency Files, 1825-1939; and (6) Indian Census Records, 1885-1924. Subgroup One, Incoming Correspondence, is broken down by agency or topic and is arranged either chronologically or alphabetically within each calendar year. Subgroup Two, Outgoing Correspondence, is arranged chronologically. Subgroup Three, Annual Reports of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, is arranged chronologically. Subgroup Four, Miscellaneous Reports and Correspondence contains reports and correspondence relating to Indian Affairs but not necessarily generated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Included are Congressional reports relating to negotiations with the tribes and reports of hostilities. Also included (Roll 165, Item #12) are excerpts of the annual report of the War Department, 1897 relating to the Missouri River steamboats and bridges. Subgroup Five, Agency Files, contains correspondence and reports relating to or generated by individual Indian agencies and is divided into four series. Series one consists of special files from the Office of Indian Affairs relating to claims and investigations. Series two includes correspondence and documents pertaining to Red Cloud Agency and agencies other than Pine Ridge Agency. This series also contains records relating to land allotments, an interview with Red Cloud, and a ledger of Indian surrenders at Red Cloud Agency. Series Three comprises the bulk of this subgroup, containing letters sent from the Pine Ridge Agency to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and to other agencies and individuals. Series Four consists of central classified files, correspondence and reports from and about the Genoa Industrial School and the Santee Boarding School. Subgroup Six, Census Records, contains the names of residents and vital statistics of those persons who maintained a formal affiliation with a tribe under Federal supervision. These are arranged chronologically by tribe.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection consists of records of the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, 1824-1939, and documents the interaction between the United States government and the various tribes. It also contains records relating to intertribal matters.
Most of the records are on microfilm and were purchased from the National Archives from their collection NARS RG075. Other records were donated to the archives, or were selected by James C. Olson in 1955 for microfilming from holdings of the National Archives. Reels are numbered consecutively as they are received.
