• Birthdays and Christmas are by far the most dominant gift-buying occasions, but even for these occasions the purchase of gift items is not universal

• Calendar-specific occasions such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day provide regular boosts to the gift set market in the first half of the year

• More personal occasions such as weddings, anniversaries and the birth of a baby also drive gifting throughout the year

• There is scope for retailers to encourage more regular purchasing of spontaneous gifts positioned as a thank you, as a romantic gesture or to cheer someone up

Gift set launches invariably peak in the fourth quarter of the year in the run-up to Christmas. However, launches fell back sharply in Q4 2011 and Q1 2012 compared to the previous year,
