Jenni’s Story By Susan Haynes
Twice now Jenni thought she heard someone whisper her name, but nobody was anywhere near her. And at least once a week she experienced
something else for which she had no explanation; a door slamming shut on its own, a strange odor, inexplicable reappearances of missing items.
She truly felt she was losing her mind. And Robert was giving her concerned looks when he thought she wasn’t paying attention .
October 11, 2008 was the day this all started, she knew. That was the day they moved into the first new home that they could afford, an
unremarkable 1950’s era ranch in a suburb of St. Louis. They thought it looked much like the house where Samantha and Darin l ived in the old
television show, Bewitched. What was better to them both was that it was close to Robert’s job and both of their families. The worse thing was the
neighbor across the street, a thin woman who had seemed so sweet and friendly when they first moved in, but became more like Gladys, the
Bewitched show’s nosy neighbor, as time went by. She was forever peering out the windows at the doings in the neighborhood, mostly at Jenni’s
house, and rarely left her own home. Her behavior was becoming increasingly peculiar, and most of the other neighbors now avoided her and her
piercing gaze whenever possible.
Jenni watched her husband pull out of the driveway in the morning with a sense of dread. Rain pelted down in increasingly heavy sheets, creating
a river in the gutter in front of the house. At least it would shield her from the nosy neighbor for a time. Lightning flashed and thunder roared like a
lion. Sweet spring in St.Louis, she thought. The tulips and daffodils swayed violently in the raised garden beds in the front yard, looking as though
they would soon lose their petals if the wind kept up. Jenni turned back to look at her brown and white living room, with the faux marble fireplace
along the other outer wall. It needed some brightening up, she decided. Some fresh flowers and some different pillows for the couch, perhaps.
She started at the sound of a door slamming upstairs. Great. Her visitor was back. She decided that before she investigated this noise that she
would have another cup of coffee. It was becoming such a common occurrence that she felt no sense of urgency anymore when something weird
happened. Just another day in Paradise. She moved toward the kitchen, pulling her red velour robe a little tighter around her middle. Her slippers
made a funny swishing sound on the thick carpet, in counterpoint to the ticking of the mantel clock that was a wedding gift from her brother Seth.
This house was usually too quiet, it unsettled her and made her wish for the noise of a house full of kids, like the home where she grew up. Her
five brothers and sisters made so much noise that her mother frequently had massive headaches for which she would she would lock herself in
her bedroom and dose herself with her hidden stash of vodka. Not the best remedy, surely, but whatever worked. Mom’s liver was failing now and
her once-flawless skin had a yellowish tint. Maybe Jenni didn’t wish for that much noise, but something would be better than nothing. She flipped
on the television as she passed it and continued on into the kitchen where she poured herself another cup of coffee from the Mr. Coffee on the
counter, adding cream from the carton on the round maple table. She stirred it while listening to the headline news stories coming from the living
room. Nothing further from upstairs. This was a good thing, maybe the “ghost’ or whatever the heck it was had decided that her attention wasn’t
worth the work today. Good.
Robert thought it was her imagination, and she sometimes did, too. Most days, however, were spent contemplating the weekly occurrences, and

Jenni’s Story
that Rose fed him ground glass at every meal. Poor Harvey suffered terribly for months until he finally passed away. While she was at it she killed
their four-year old daughter, too. MaryAnn passed quickly, thank God. At least she didn’t suffer like Harvey. Rose was arrested and killed herself
in the county jail rather than go to prison, but she never expressed remorse. She said he deserved it, and so did his so-called’spawn’. I knew her
evil would stay in that house! I’m so sorry I never had the nerve to tell you. I guess I just hoped that it had gone away.” She finished her tale,
wringing her hands. Jenni just sat there, speechless. She thought she had never heard a more horrible tale. This explained a lot, but why did the
ghost of Rose Driscoll haunt her and not her husband? “Mrs. Jensen , I didn’t tell you the worst part, at least as it relates to you…the other
woman’s name was Jenni, too” Good lord, now she knew. But now what? Would Richard even believe this? Well, one thing she knew, she was
never going back in that house, and nobody could make her. And she had another thought, if she burned it down there would be no place for that
horrible ghost to haunt anymore. She grinned and turned to the neighbor lady. “I have a plan…will you help?” And so it was that two suburban St.
Louis ladies turned to a life of crime.
The following question(s) was/were submitted by our readers, by our online subscribers, or at events.
What's the origin of All Hallows Eve?
All Hallows Eve, or what we know it today as Halloween, comes from many centuries ago. It is a holiday that has evolved over time and has a varied meaning
depending on your belief system. This belief system may be religious based, secular based, or both.
Wikipedia defines Halloween as: The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even
("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (ealra hālgena mæssedæg, mass-day of all
saints), All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested until 1556. (from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween)
The religious attitudes toward the holiday are very diverse. Some religions, such as Anglican Church, chose to stick to the traditions of the All Saints’ Day
holiday, and some Protestants as the Reformation Day. While others view it as just a secular holiday in which we dress up and “beg” for candy. Other
religions, such as Pagans, views this season as a holy time of the year.
If you ask most American children today they just know it as the day you dress up in a costume and go door to door and say “Trick or Treat”. The person at the
door either gives you candy or you perform a trick on them. We at TnT Paranormal like to think of it as a fun holiday to celebrate with family and friends.
