CHANGEOVER PRESENTATION NIGHT

On Tuesday 26th, Gloucester Rotary held its 68th Changeover. There were about 85 people attending the event. Rotarian Grahame Stelzer was the chairman and he welcome all guests and opened the meeting with an invocation. Rotarian Grahame Holstein gave a Loyal Toast to the Queen. Rotarian Sharee Abeysekera made a special welcome to Deputy Mayor Katheryn Smith, Past District Governor Ian Jackson, Presidents and Rotarians from Wingham, Old Bar and Dungog, Representatives from Lions & Quota Service Clubs, Principal Trudi Edmund and Music Teacher Judith Ingram and her two singers, Liam Chester and Nina Sampson. Apologies from Dr M Gilliespie, MP Michale Johnson, David West, District Governor Bob & Margaret Ryan were acknowledged.

Deputy Mayor Katheryn thanked the Gloucester Rotary for the invite. She firstly acknowledged the Worimi and Biripi people who are the traditional custodians of this Land and pay respect to the Elders. Katheryn spoke highly of the work and Projects that Rotary has done to the community, such as the Mountain Man Challenge that has put Gloucester on the Map in the Tourism sector. These projects were made possible by the volunteers and also the community.

Valda Barron made a International Toast. Valda spoke briefly about what Rotary International stands for and globally, there are around 33,000 Rotary Clubs in over 200 countries with a network of 1.2 million Rotarians, all volunteering their time and talents to serve their communities and the world.

Past District Governor Ian Jackson attended the Changeover on behalf of District Governor Bob Ryan. Bob is on strict orders from the Doctor to stay home for his Health issues. Ian also acknowledge the projects and fundraising events Gloucester Rotary has run. Ian thanked Gloucester Rotary for their contribution to this year’s Partners Project, “Research of the regeneration of Heart Muscle”. And halfway through his speech, he asked to consult with the Lawyer of the Club, Rotarian Ray Martin, as Wingham Rotary members has sneakily put the bell hammer inside his jacket. This little stunt brought erupted laughter from the audience.

Rotarian Ray Martin made a Toast to the Partners of the Gloucester Rotary. These Partners not only extended to the Partners of the Rotarians but also to the working community Partners such as the volunteers from the Men’s Shed, the Lions Club and the Quota Clubs. They have assisted in many events that Rotary runs such as the Motorcycle Expo, the BBQ on Australia Day and many other important public events. Ray also thanked the support of the Gloucester High School for supporting Rotary Youth programs such as the STEM challenge, driver awareness courses and public speaking events. And most importantly, Ray acknowledge and thanked the support of the spouses/partners who made it possible for Gloucester Rotary to continue its role in the community. Kaye Stelzer responsed in kind on behalf of the spouses/partners of Rotary and made mentioned the fun that also goes along with the involvement and commitment of the Projects and Fundraising events.

President Sam gave a brief report of his year and it was a very productive year with many successful fundraising events. He thanked the Rotarians for the hard work and also the volunteers of Mens Shed, Lions and Quota Clubs for their assistance in some of the Rotary events. Donations were then presented to the following recipients: Westpac Helicopter Rescue, Prostate Cancer & Breast Cancer Support Group, Bucketts Radio, Gloucester Charities, Men’s Shed, Interplast & Rotary Foundation. Three Rotarians were presented with Awards for their Contribution to Rotary. Peter Markey received the Sapphire Paul Harris Pin for his outstanding Contribution to Rotary. Peter is described by President Sam as the “YES” Rotarian. He will always say “Yes” to volunteering in any Rotary activites, ranging from organising the Gloucester Motorcycle Expo, to dressing up into his Easter Duck Costume for the Annual Easter Duck Race. Paul Hedditch and Li Meng Wong were both presented with the Paul Harris Award for their contributions to Rotary. Paul has been in charge of the Community Service role shortly after he’s become a Rotarian. He has held that position for the last 3 years and have cooked many many BBQs in many events and functions. Along the way, Paul was also fined numberous times for his mishaps with the BBQ trailers and waylaid cooking equipments and other misadventures that would later transcripted into a very entertaining fine session story. This year, Paul is handing over the rein to David Elliott but he will continue to assist. Li Meng has been the Club Bulletin Editor for the last 3 years. She is also involved in the Membership Committee and together with her Board Members, Ray Martin, Ron West and Denver Webb, they discussed and implement new ideas such as the monthly Rotary Network where friends and guests of Rotarians can come and see what Rotary is doing in the community and around the world. As President Ernie said, only a Rotarian knows what an honour to be recognised and be presented with these Awards. Congratulations to Peter Markey, Paul Hedditch and Li Meng Wong.

President Sam also thanked Kent and Sandy and daughter Umi for their tireless cooking for Rotary all these years. Kent and Sandy have not only served up a scrumptious meal every week for Rotary, they do that with a Smile and will cater for the special dietary requirements of Rotarians and Guests with no complaints at all. President Sam and Secretary Brian had organised three citrus Fruit Plants to present to them. Kent and Sandy and Umi were delighted with the plants.

After dinner was served, Nina Sampson and Liam Chester sang a few songs to the audience. Then it was time for President Sam to hand over the rein to President Ernie. The theme for Rotary this year is “Be An Inspiration”. And President Ernie gave a short speech to Rotarians and Guests to be an Inspiration in our Life and in our Community. President Ernie then proceeded to introduced his Board of 2018-2019. Gloucester Rotarians are looking forward to an exciting and challenging 2018 to 2019 to “Be An Inspiration”.
