2 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California — September 18, 2011

From The Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! In this weekend’s Gospel read-

ing from Matthew (20:1-16A), the owner of a vineyard

has hired on temporary laborers at various times

throughout the course of a work day. To the delight

and amazement of the latecomers—as well as the out-rage of those who worked through the heat of the

day—they are all paid exactly the same wage. Obvi-

ously, this is not a story about God’s justice— I person-

ally would hesitate to read this selection before a

group of labor union members myself! After all, most

people would agree with the ideal of an honest day’s

wage for an honest day’s work. No, this is not a story

about equity. It is, rather a story about God’s mercy—

God’s hesed or “loving kindness.” And throughout the

teachings of Jesus, God’s mercy invariably trumps

God’s justice. Hence, the unapologetic owner chal-

lenges his interlocuters: “Are you envious because I amgenerous?” And for us sinners, recipients of God’s gen-

erosity, that’s very Good News indeed.

God is not only tremendously merciful with us: God

is also amazingly patient. God is ready to wait for as

long as it takes for us to ‘get it’—to come to a genuine,

heartfelt recognition that God is in charge of things.

And that God really and truly does care for us—each

and every single one of us—with a deep, infinite, and

abiding Love.

Many of us have taken the ‘scenic route’ to discover-

ing, or better yet, rediscovering our faith. For some of

us, this essential understanding of who we are and

whose we are comes only after we’ve hit the wall of

our own self-centeredness or imagined self-sufficiency.

It’s only after we’ve reached some kind of dead end or

moment of crisis— a cancer diagnosis, a failed relation-

ship, a spiritual/ physical/ emotional/ financial ‘bottom’

from addictive behaviors, or a moment of deep per-

sonal loss—that we seem to be able to come to our

senses and come to God.

And where is God in all of this? Incredibly, God is

waiting for us—not with a prepared lecture or con-

demning glance—but with open arms, ready to wel-come us home to His Love. No questions asked. “Walk

-ins and Latecomers Welcome” reads the sign on God’s

‘door.’ And thank God for that; otherwise, many of us

would be in very deep trouble. The truth is simple:

God welcomes us one and all-- the washed and the

great unwashed alike-- with the same gracious accep-

tance, compassion, and love. Nothing else matters at

all.

Elsewhere in the Parish

This Sunday, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sun-day—a moment for all of us to stop and reflect on the

way in which we work as a parish family to pass on our

beautiful Catholic faith from one generation to the

next. Charity starts at home—and so does religious

instruction and the inculcation of moral values. This is

a major reason while our parish has been using home/family-based catechesis for the past decade. The in-

struction children and youth receive in Sunday/

Tuesday classes ‘plants the seed’ that is to be nurtured

at home during the week.

For that reason, we honor and bless all of our cate-

chists—starting with parents, grandparents and other

family members. In a more formal way, we give thanks

to God for the tremendous dedication of our Parish

staff as well as the nearly 80 (!) women and men who

serve as volunteer teachers in our Religious Education

program and our parish school (Old Mission Montes-sori). This year, nearly 800 children and young people

will participate in our programs. Bill Bischoff is Direc-

tor of Catechetical Ministry; Elena Zavala and LarryLaGrasta work with the English and Spanish- language

programs. Christie Herrera has helped to provide valu-

able logistical support. Many thanks and God’s bless-

ings on these extraordinary and extraordinarily gener-

ous people!

God bless,

Father Chuck

Young people today are looking for individuals who areauthentic and confident Catholics, as models of the faith. It isnot how much you know about the faith but how you live it.With this in mind please consider the following.

We are in need of catechists/teachers for our high school

youth faith formation program. We are looking for men &

women who would be willing to share and teach the faith,

engage in discussion and faith experiences with our young

people. Classes are on Tuesday evenings with some Saturday

mornings.

Training, resources, etc., are provided. Last year our Confir-mation Program and other high school classes had over 150

students. Many of last year’s teachers have moved or are

unable to commit for this year. At present we need eight

teachers and also classroom aides.

Please consider investing sometime with the “younger

church” they are the future of our faith.

For more info., please call Bill Bischoff at 760-547-0702.

do el mismo sueldo.

No habrá preguntas. “Bienvenida

¡Muchas gracias y Dios bendiga a

estas personas generosas extraordinarias!

Dios los bendiga,

Padre Chuck
