This is a great honor for Brian professionally and personally, and is great visibility for our Museum. It demonstrates that Brian’s talent in the field has been recognized by his peers in the field all along the East Coast of the United States. MAPS is one of seven regional planetarium organizations in the United States, and is comprised of approximately 120 members, working in states ranging from Maine to Georgia. Of this group, about half of the planetarians work in museums and science centers, and the other half work in school districts or colleges. Brian and his team at the Planetarium hosted the MAPS conference last spring, and they received rave reviews for the conference. Brian will be sworn in at the 2019 MAPS Conference, which will be held in early June in Columbia, SC, at which time his six-year term will officially begin. Congratulations Brian! THE BANDSTAND At the All Staff meeting on February 1, Steve talked about the upcoming dismantling of the Bandstand. As he mentioned, the bandstand came here in 1960. As a matter-of-fact, it was exactly 59 years ago this week that it arrived on a barge from Fisher’s Island. According to Fisher’s Island history, the first bandstand on the site was built in 1911, but destroyed by a storm in 1913. It was rebuilt and destroyed again in the 1938 hurricane, and once again rebuilt. That structure remained in place on the island until it was moved to the Museum in 1960.

This postcard shows it in place on the island at Fort Wright. It served its purpose on Fisher’s Island until it became an impediment for the residents there. The bandstand has, unfortunately, not stood the test of time and the cost to repair it is in the neighborhood of $50,000. A number of people were approached to help fund a restoration, but all felt that their money would be better spent on other projects at the Museum. The bandstand, supported by cables for some time now, has become unusable. The bandstand has been a central spot for music and other events over the years and we will certainly miss it. Alternatives are being explored to replace the functions it has served over the years. — Paul O’Pecko

FEBRUARY FIRST THURSDAY

Thank you, Fred Calabretta, for an informative presentation about the Scholfield and Tingley exhibit “When This You See, Remember Me” in the Schaefer Gallery. Everyone present appreciated the in depth look at two Mystic-area photographers, Everett A. Scholfield and George E. Tingley, whose careers spanned the years 1865-1939. We all left with a better understanding of the historical progression of the photography business. For our March 7th First Thursday, Margaret Milnes, Director of Membership, looks forward to welcoming you to the Membership Lounge for a talk about the thriving Mystic Seaport Museum Membership community, our new 2019 marketing campaign, and our goals for the future. Please meet in the Member Lounge for coffee and donuts at 8:30 am followed by the program at 9 am. EveAnne Stouch and Susan O’Donnell

2019 MALLORY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM DEADLINE – FEBRUARY 15, 2019 I am pleased to announce that proposals are now being accepted for the 2019 Mallory International Exchange Fellowship Program. The Mallory Exchange Fellowship will be used for professional international exchange at a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other educational institution for research and study purposes. The Mallory Endowment was established in 1993 by Wade and Angela Thompson to honor Clifford and Pauline Mallory for their many years of service to Mystic Seaport. The stated purpose of the fund is “...to create an international exchange program between the Seaport and other institutions...” The intent is that one year an international scholar, in any discipline related to Mystic Seaport’s mission, will come to the Museum for study and research purposes; in alternate years, a Mystic Seaport staff member will visit a foreign museum for study and research purposes. Proposal Guidelines: Proposals should be submitted by a Mystic Seaport staff member sponsoring a colleague from a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other educational institution to travel to Mystic Seaport Museum. The submitter of the successful proposal(s) will have the general responsibilities of any project manager—to ensure that funds are spent according to the approved budget, and to prepare a 1-2 page narrative project report at the conclusion of the project, which the Advancement Office may forward to the donor. Funds are available to fund one or more projects (total funding for the Fellowship Program not to exceed $8,500). Each proposal must contain: - Project Title - Title Page including name and signature of staff member, department director, and vice president sponsoring the proposal. - Resume of sponsored individual - Project Abstract (1-2 page maximum) including goals and intended outcomes of the project, description of the resources to be researched, and names of colleagues for consultation. - A letter of support from the foreign institution. - Project Budget indicating proposed budget period and detailed breakdown of expenses not to exceed $8,500 per project. - Proposed exchange timeframe and schedule. Due date is February 15, 2019. Send proposals to Jeanne Gade, Director of Human Resources, for transmittal to Mallory Fellowship Selection Committee for review. Late submissions will not be accepted. Proposal Evaluation and Selection: Proposals will be evaluated by the Selection Committee on a number of different criteria, with the overriding factor being the relationship of proposed activities to the advancement of Mystic Seaport’s mission and strategic initiatives. The top 3 proposals may be shared with the donors for their involvement and input prior to making the final selection. Selections will be announced in early March 2019.
