Looking back at last season, we believe that Central Opera Service has done much toward accomplishing its objective of serving its members and American opera. Surveys were conducted in the following fields and the results published: Professional Opera Producing Companies in the United States, Performed Operas by Contemporary American Composers, World and American Premieres in the United States during the 1962-63 season. The Bulletin has been enlarged to include month-by-month listings of all operatic performances in this country. Our information service has handled an average of forty inquiries a week from our enlarged membership and we are gratified by the enthusiastic comments on its efficiency. THREE EUROPEAN PREMIERES OF SPECIAL INTEREST

On July 2 London saw the world premiere of Malcolm Williamson's three-act opera "OUR MAN IN HAVANA" performed by the Sadler's Wells Co.Fashioned after the Graham Greene novel of the same name, with alibretto by Sidney Gilliat, the opera unfolds as comedy turning intoan effective melodrama. The setting is pre-Castro Cuba. The Britishmagazine Opera, in praising the composer says "I found this not onlyan exceptionally promising first opera, but a genuine achievement -clever, resourceful, sometimes exciting, sometimes funny, sometimesevoking genuine pathos". Of the opera it says "An opera on a present-day plot, in straight dramatic form and in readily comprehensiblemusical language".

Am almost forgotten opera by Dmitri Shostakovich was performed inDuesseldorf in West Germany for the second time since it was composedin 1930. Its premiere in Leningrad that year was its only previousperformance. "THE NOSE" is published in the Soviet Union but avail-able through Vienna's Universal Edition (its American representativeis Theodore Presser Co.). In Germany the opera was commended for itsoriginality and avant-gardism, while retelling with biting humor analmost surrealistic phantasy by Gogol.

Figaro, with his Susanna, the Count and Countess Almaviva and Cherubinoare back on stage again in a "new sequel" to the Rossini and Mozartstory. With music by the young German composer Giselher Klebe and abook by Oedeon von Horvath "FIGARO LAESST SICH SCHEIDEN" (Figaro Suesfor Divorce) was recently premiered at the Hamburg State Opera. Setagainst the background of the French Revolution, we find Almavivaan impoverished Count, Cherubino a corrupt night-club owner and Figaroback at his barber chair. A marital drama enfolds. The librettistand composer have kept the story moving along lightly by interweavingsituations of subtle comedy. - All's well that ends well and Figaroand Susanna live happily ever after, - or until they appear again inyet another opera.
