Some were due to her apparitions eg. Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Gaudalupe etc. Others were due to icons of her that were painted by inspired devotees eg. Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Our Lady of Czestocowa etc. Some came directly from Sacred Scriptures eg. the Annunciation, the Visitation etc. or implied from the Bible eg. Our Lady of Sorrows etc. A few were instituted due to teachings of the Church eg. Immaculate Conception, Assumption, Mother of God, Our Lady of the Rosary etc. Yet, some titles of our Mother came from hymns and Our Lady Star of the Sea is one of them originating from Ave Maris Stella (Hail Thou Star of Ocean). Indeed, many church musicians have commented that this is most probably the earliest Marian hymn of the Latin church. It seems to have been written in the 9 th Century AD. Its epithet Maris Stella or Stella Maris has appealed to many who prayed for safe and smooth voyages when travelling across oceans in ships. This ascription seems to occur first in this hymn which has 7 stanzas the last of which ends with a doxology to the Blessed Trinity. While many are travelling by air these days, we can still invoke Our Lady Star of the Sea for a safe journey since many air routes criss-cross the seas as 2/3 of the earth are covered with water. 31 AUGUST 2014 22ND ORDINARY SUNDAY

To be a Christ-centred family that loves and

serves one another with joy and humility

OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA

Our Heavenly Mother has many titles. Some were due to her apparitions eg. Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of

Fatima, Our Lady of Gaudalupe etc. Others were due to icons of her that were painted by inspired devotees eg.

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Our Lady of Czestocowa etc. Some came directly from Sacred Scriptures eg. the

Annunciation, the Visitation etc. or implied from the Bible eg. Our Lady of Sorrows etc. A few were instituted due to

teachings of the Church eg. Immaculate Conception, Assumption, Mother of God, Our Lady of the Rosary etc.

Yet, some titles of our Mother came from hymns and Our Lady Star of the Sea is one of them originating from Ave

Maris Stella (Hail Thou Star of Ocean). Indeed, many church musicians have commented that this is most

probably the earliest Marian hymn of the Latin church. It seems to have been written in the 9th Century AD.

Its epithet Maris Stella or Stella Maris has appealed to many who prayed for safe and smooth voyages when

travelling across oceans in ships. This ascription seems to occur first in this hymn which has 7 stanzas the last of

which ends with a doxology to the Blessed Trinity.

While many are travelling by air these days, we can still invoke Our Lady Star of the Sea for a safe journey since

many air routes criss-cross the seas as 2/3 of the earth are covered with water.

Our Lady Star of the Sea, pray for us!
