Wisdom prevailsModjadjiskloof residents, municipal workers take hands
A volatile situation regarding service delivery in Mod-jadjiskloof was defused this week, aft er members of the community agreed on pro-active talks rather than de-structive action. This followed aft er a power outage left the town without electricity and water, caused by striking municipal workers demanding money “owed to us since April last year”. When independent local contractors vol-untarily stepped forward to restore the power, they were prevented from doing the work by striking workers. A stand-off between the two groups ensued. An impromptu meeting was called to address the municipal manager, Ms Gloria Mashaba. The strikers and residents then united to solve the problem amicably. This led to an offi cial meet-ing between the strikers and the municipal management and the payment issue was referred for arbitration. At the same time the contractor was given the go ahead to restore the power. Negotiations between Samwu and community leaders also gave birth to a new approach in dealing with service delivery issues. • Read the full story on page 3
“In the week you will fi nd that the munici-pal manager and the CFO are not in the of-fi ce. They are out, they are eating that money, ‘chowing’ that money but they can’t pay these people (the municipal workers). We must put a moratorium on their travelling. They must sit there the whole year. Because you were hired there with your qualifi -cations, so why is it that every week you go and att end courses? You are eating that money up.”• Watch the video on our Facebook.
This stern statement was made by a mem-ber of SAMWU and was directed at the Modjadjiskloof Mu-nicipal Manager, Ms Gloria Mashaba and acting CFO Mr Les-ley Mamatlepa dur-ing an impromptu meeting outside the town’s public library on Tuesday morn-ing. The meeting was called following
a dispute between independent electrical contractors and stri-king municipal workers earlier that morning.

was. Ja, dit is V.I.
as Hendrik Verwoerd en Albert Luthuli. Gaan dit binnekort verander? Vlieg is

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) helps callers countrywide with mental health queries and is open seven days a week from 08:00 to 20:00.
The NGO is the largest mental health advo-cacy group in Africa and receives up to 400 calls per day. They are currently looking for compassionate, recovered patients, family members, psychologists, teachers or ther-apists with life experience who are able to volunteer just once or twice a month to run a support group. These could be for depres-sion, bipolar or panic or a combination.
All new volunteers will receive training from Johannesburg trainers who will be in Giyani on 16 February and in Tzaneen on 17 February.
Also available are brochures, pamphlets, training manuals, toll free numbers and help as required.
Volunteering is an incredibly rewarding ex-perience and highlights just what an impor-tant role each of us plays in our community. To fi nd out more information please call 0800 21 22 23 or 0800 567 567 and ask for Naazia or Lebo, who will be able to arrange for you to meet their visiting trainer and answer all your questions.
Their support group leaders are expected to run a group once or twice a month usually starting at 18:00 or 19:00 for two hours. Al-ternatively some are operated on a Saturday aft ernoon. They will help to fi nd a suitable venue and arrange speakers.
It’s an opportunity for sharing experienc-es with each other in a non-judgmental set-ting. “We know that in SA one in every fi ve people will experience a mental health prob-lem in their lives and by being there to help people, this is a wonderful way to contribute and make a positive diff erence,” they said.
SADAG has a signifi cant number of cal-lers from all areas and they need more local support group leaders to support their tele-phone services.

On Monday morning the Greater Tzaneen Mu-nicipality’s mayor, Ms Dikeledi Mmetle, hosted
a breakfast for matric achievers. She said it was done to recognize and show appreciation for the
pupils of public and private schools in the GTM’s jurisdiction, who performed well in the 2015 mat-ric examinations.
Two special guests at the event were GTM-ANC councillor Edney Ntimabi and a Department of Education’s circuit manager, Ms Doreen Manzini. They were accompanied by the best performed pupils from the Shihoko, Nwanedzi, Thabini and Nkowankowa circuits. The GTM’s speaker, Mr Cassius Machimana, urged parents to continue to guide, support and encourage their children to in-vest quality time in their studies.
The mayor said that the GTM has already award-ed over 300 bursaries to fi nancial needy pupils. “This is yet another group which continues to make us proud. The best pupils will be awarded with registration and tuition fees as part of their bursaries, to allow them entrance into tertiary in-stitutions,” she said.

By Louis Roux & Joe DreyerA serious threat to the well-being of residents and businesses in Modj-adjiskloof was defused this week in talks between ratepayers, members of Samwu and the management of the Greater Letaba Municipality.
It all started with an electrical outage where fuses had been removed from sub stations by municipal workers and also a burnt cable that required repairing. Residents aff ected by the outage revolted when a private electri-cian, Mike’s Electrics, who voluntarily off ered to repair the cable, was forced by Samwu members in the electricity department to abandon the project.
They demanded payment owed to them by the municipality since April last year, before any power restora-tion would be allowed.
When they insisted on the presence of the municipal manager, Ms Gloria Mashaba, at an impromptu meeting in the Modjadjiskloof library’s gar-den, the residents under leadership of Mr Gullis Gouws gave them full support. The MM arrived late for the meeting due to her request to be es-corted by two police offi cers.
This annoyed the regional secretary of Samwu, Mr Sello Mononela, who said: ”What Manager cannot speak to her workforce without the presence of police offi cers” and requested that
the police escort remove themselves from the gathering, which they did.
Mononela stated clearly that the strike by the municipal workers had nothing to do with race, but was based on anger over the unkept promises of the GLM.
A meeting between Samwu mem-bers and the municipal management was held later in the day, where the dispute was referred for arbitration (which could take months to resolve).
In the mean time the private electri-cal service company was given the go ahead to repair the cable fault and the power was back in Modjadjiskloof on Wednesday night.
A large group of protesters against service delivery planned to barricade the main road on Wednesday aft er-noon, but was advised to target the municipal offi ces rather than the gen-eral public.
Gouws said the establishment of a community forum is also on the cards by the residents of Modjadjiskloof. High on the agenda is a request that the delivery of electricity be taken over by Eskom and pre-paid electricity box-es be installed. The people also want Lepelle Water to take over the water supply function. By removing these two burdens from the GLM will make a big diff erence in service delivery for the whole community, Gouws said.

The comfort of a well-kept residence in Tzaneen and surroundings is not only suitable for the occupants during hot and dry weather conditions, but also for bush creatures like snakes, lizards and a variety of insects.
They have no intentions to invade human homes, but are lured by the luxury of fresh water, cool air and green pastures, says snake ex-pert Donald Strydom, own-er/curator of Khamai Reptile Park near Hoedspruit.
“By entering these developed premises, they are alert of alien actions and are more alert than in their natural environment. To confront a snake under your bed with aggression, will aggra-
vate the situation. Rather approach the nearest snake handler to come to the rescue.”
Strydom said Limpopo is a snake par-adise, with a large number of toxic and
less toxic species. They are, however, as scared of
human and other be-ings and will fl ee rath-er than att ack.He recommended that
the public should be aware of clinics and hospitals who
are equipped with the appropriate venoms against snake bites as well as
the phone numbers of local snake han-dlers.
“People have the urge to kill snakes, and not the other way round’” Strydom said.

Suspects arrested during holidayLetsitele police worked hard to combat crime during the festive season, by doing regular and extensive patrols around the problemat-ic areas and conducting stop and search op-erations.“No stone was left unturned and that is the reason why we had a successful operation. Even criminals who were hiding in caves were ambushed and brought to justice”, said Const Ntsako Reoh Mabunda, the spokesper-son for the Letsitele police.A total of 274 suspects were arrested in Let-sitele for robbery, possession of an unlicensed fi rearm, burglary, planting dagga, possession of dagga, possession of suspected stolen property, calling someone a wizard, crimen injuria, assault, Road Traffi c Act off ences, kidnapping and for contravening the Liquor Act, malicious damage to property, illegal gambling, Environmental Management Act off ences, hunting with snares, violation of a protection order, impersonating a police offi -cial, theft , rape, att empted rape, intimidation, stock theft and arson.
InquestAn inquest docket was opened by Letsitele police aft er a man known to be between the ages of 25 and 30 was found hanging inside a house at Nkambako village kaMalubana on Christmas Day.According to police spokesperson Const Nkateko Mabunda, it is alleged that the de-
ceased was a boyfriend visiting someone. He was originally from
Mbombela and was working on a farm in the Letsitele area.
Police are still looking for the de-ceased’s relatives. Anyone with information should contact D/Cst MJ Maake or Letsitele Police on 015 345 8600.
Kidnapping suspects in custodyLetsitele Police have arrested Hitler Malesa (45) and Aubrey Maphanga (37) aft er the dis-appearance of Victor Bill (20) from Rwanda village in Nwamitwa. According to Letsitele Police spokesperson Const Nkateko Mabun-da, it is alleged that on 19 December when the two suspects and an acomplish who is still at large came to the victim’s home.“They took the victim and drove off with their car. The mother of the victim reported the matt er to the Letsitele Police and a case of kidnapping was opened,” said Mabunda. They two men appeared in the Ritavi Magis-trate’s Court for a bail application, which was declined pending further investigation. They will appear in court again today (Friday).Mabunda has urged anyone with informa-tion to contact him or Letsitele Police on 015 345 8600.
Community warned against these perpetratorsMabunda has also warned the public against people who are impersonating bank offi cials and/or security guards. They pretend to be assisting people at ATM’s, but they swop the bank cards and then withdraw money from the innocent people’s bank accounts. There are people driving around Letsitele and Tzaneen, pretending to be helpful good Samarithans. They give hikers lift s and along the way the hikers are sent to withdraw mon-ey from an ATM. When the hikers embark from the vehicle the suspects drive off with the passengers’ belongings.“Police are working around the clock to en-sure the safety of innocent culprits.Members of the public are advised to report any criminal conduct to Letsitele SAPS on 015
345 8600 or to their nearest police station”, said Mabunda.
Mob kills suspected robberAngry residents of Songwane village in the Maake area severely assaulted a suspected robber and set him alight. He died from severe burns. Tzaneen Police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said it is alleged that three armed suspects att acked a local shop, pointed everybody with fi rearms, demanded money and during that process, the shop owner screamed for help from community members. The people ultimately responded in large numbers, caught one of the robbers and set him alight.“The deceased was identifi ed as Thapelo Walter Maphanga (29) from Mablejan village, Bush-buckridge,” said Ngoepe. No arrest has yet been made and police investigations continue.
Prisoner denied bail aft er escapeAn escaped awaiting-trial prisoner in Tza-neen has been re-arrested by the police in Bolobedu on Wednesday last week. Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe said Bishop Monareng es-caped from Ga-Kgapane hospital, where he was admitt ed for medical treatment under Police guard on 18 December. He was chained to the hospital bed when he disappeared.Ngoepe said he was found hiding at a village in Bolobedu. He appeared in the Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court last week and his case was remanded to 24 February.
Police determined to combat the lawbreakers A wave of drunken driving and drinking in public incidents hit Tzaneen over the festive season. “Tzaneen Cluster Police established eff ective crime prevention mechanisms and dealt harshly with criminals over the 2015 festive season,” said Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Police spokesperson.“The festive period was relatively quiet com-pared to the previous one, which motivated us to do more in securing our communities and their property unconditionally and without any compromise,” said Ngoepe. “The Police have enjoyed exceptional support
and cooperation from the business communi-ty and community leaders, including farmers. This spirit is encouraged to continue in the name of partnership policing,” he said.“Our policing plans on Christmas eve and the New Year celebrations were also successful, because there were no serious crime incidents reported during those festivities; which is highly commendable.”Members of the community are once-more warned to stop drinking in public and drunk-en driving because now, drinking in public will cause you to have a criminal record which is unnecessary and avoidable by drinking liq-uor at the right authorised places or in your home. The SAPS Tzaneen Cluster Commander, Brig Thomas Shingange, has expressed his happiness with this milestone achievement and encouraged all members of the Police in this cluster to double their eff orts in the fi ght against crime, until all members of the com-munity are safe in all aspects.
Police warns against hitch-hikingThe police in Maake would like to warn all community members about criminals who prey on hitchhikers and drivers. “These crim-inals pose as hitchhikers. Once you off er them a lift , they rob you of your vehicle, assault you and dump you. They also target those who are hitch-hiking, by off ering lift s, and once you are in their vehicle they assault and rob you,” a spokesperson for the Maake Police said.“We thus condemn hitch-hiking and off ering of a lift to any unknown person. We also ad-vise hitch-hikers to write down the registra-tion number, colour and model of the vehicle when they accept a lift . These details should be sent by sms or whatsaap to a friend or fam-ily member.• The most dangerous places to ask for a lift in the Maake area are: Maake plaza hiking spot (R36 road), Maake plaza bus stop, Trich-ardtsdal road, Burgersdorp, Ofcolaco and Ga-Masokisi and Taposa hiking spots (Metz). People should be aware that all hiking spots are dangerous and have a potential of robberies.
Well done!Rev Adriaan van Tonder, 2 Fees Street, Tzaneen, writes: My wife and I had to renew our fi rearm licences recently. I heard so many negative reports that I really was very reluctant to go. However, great was my surprise when we received excellent service from the two sergeants in the offi ce.
They are Sgt. Nkoana and Khosa. Our presence were promptly acknowledged and Sgt Nkoana immediately got up to at-tend to us. She listened to us and without fumbling around, presented us with the
required papers to be completed. She then explained in detail exactly what is required and what supporting documents we need to att ach. She advised us the time the offi ce was open. It took less than half an hour.
We went home, completed the forms and returned to her just aft er 14:00 and again, she assisted us immediately and within three quarters of an hour we were done, forms completed, SMS received, payments
made. I have nothing but the greatest
admiration for the absolutely professional way in which we were treated. Sgt. Khosa got up without being asked and assist-ed my wife with the fi ngerprints
and thereaft er also assisted her to get her hands cleaned.
Sgts Nkoana and Khosa, I salute you on your professional conduct and showing that our systems can work properly and ef-fi ciently when we are proud on doing what we do. My wife and I are really impressed with your service.

In hierdie land is daar baie hiervan nodig.
• Dis glo ‘n nuwe jaar; skrikkeljaar, nogal. Voorspoed. Wees asseblief tog net geduldig. Daar is soveel verhoudings met nuwe kombinasies, nuwe kerke, nuwe vyandskappe, nuwe skelmstreke, nuwe planne, slim stories, ensovoorts dat Die Oor eers weer moet bykom. Mr Sello Mononela, the chairman of the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in Modjadjiskloof. He took the lead in showing on Tuesday that disputes can be resolved ipeacefully and that it is not necessary to cause damage to property in order to drive home a point. Hopefully the offi cialdom will not let these people down by not attend-ing to their serious problems promptly and seriously.

The Maake centre Management together with Sleep Masters, Cell phone shop, Nizams, Chisa nyama and Fish and chips extended a caring hand when they donated school pull-overs, backpacks, school shoes and stationery to Marumofase needy school children.
Fourteen learners from Marumofase Full Ser-vice School in Lenyenye will now go to school in full school uniform. These learners come from poor families, and some of them did not have school shoes.
The principal, Mr Sibanda, said the donation would help the learners and give them a sense of belonging. “Without uniforms, they were just children who felt lost. We’re very grateful for this contribution to improving the lives of
our learners. We hope other private companies will follow in Plaza’s footsteps,” said Sibanda.
Member of the school governing body (SGB), Mr Mabela Tshidi, said she was very grateful that the children fi nally had full uniform to wear to school.
“I am fi lled with happiness, I give thanks to Maake plaza, for the shoes, clothes, stationery and back packs.” she said.
The schools former principal Mr. George Ra-modike continues to lend a helping hand and supporting the school even aft er serving the school for the past 27 years.
Maake centre manager, Orry Mbedzi said this initiative has been running since the open-ing of the centre. “Each and every year we pick a local school in Maake and the surrounding area and donate school uniforms to the needy learners.” Said Mbedzi.

Notice of power outage in Tzaneen Distribution area
MUNICIPALITY
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality is undertaking critical mainte-nance at Tarentaalrand intake substation. The work is scheduled for the 17th January 2016 necessitating a total shutdown for the complete Tzaneen Distribution area from 05:00 until 13:00 with a phased switch on thereafter. All power points should be viewed as live as the power can be restored at any time without notice.
In the event of inclement weather, this shutdown would be can-celled and arranged for an alternate date.
Some of the greatest accomplishments throughout history are marked by our capacity to push through incredible amounts of physical and mental pain to reach new heights and new goals — Derek Lauber
By Sue Reed and Neil Haarhoff Stanford Lake College (SLC) took two teams to compete in the Adventure Chal-lenge for Schools™ in Zambia from 4 to 8 December last year. Nine teams from three countries — South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia — competed in this event.
Adventure racing is a multi-disciplined, non-mo-torised sport where mixed gender teams of four com-pete. It takes months of gruelling dedicated plan-ning and training to pre-pare for these events. Last year’s event was held at Mulungushi Dam in Zambia, 200 km NE of Lusaka.
Two SLC teams, four teachers and several parents left on 30 November, making their way through Botswana and Zimbabwe to fi nally set up camp four days later on the banks of the dam.
It was an exciting four days of fast paced intensive activities. Day 1 activities were at the dam. The teams
moved on water via canoe between the diff erent activi-ties — mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, rock climb-ing, bouldering, high water jumps and various initiative exercises. Day 2 was spent in a gorge just below the hydro plant with activities such as gorge walking, run-ning , hiking through river beds, abseiling, slack lining over water pools, more water jumps, Tyrolean traverse,
raft building, rock pool diving, problem solv-ing, cooking, map work and orienteering. The Grand Challenge was over the last two
days and was a continuous race of about 100 km, which included all the activities they had done during the fi rst few days — all as one event!
Not a lot of rain and high temperatures made things even more diffi cult! Aft er four days of racing, various activi-ties and a lot of blood, sweat and gears; it was a close fi nish between Zimbabwe’s Falcon
College senior team (Bushtic Gladiators) who took fi rst place overall, with the SLC senior team (Ubuntu) in sec-ond place. The SLC Junior team (Tshanduko) came home in third place.
Highlights of the long journey were a river cruise down the Zambezi at Kasane on the way there and white riv-er raft ing down the mighty Zambezi at Victoria Falls —
with three members doing it in kayaks (and yes, there is water at Vic Falls, contrary to the photos and rumours) and mountain biking in the Matopos just outside Bulawayo (a World Heritage site) on the way home — just for fun!
• A huge thank you to all the sponsors and the teachers and parents who came along for the adventure! Last but not least: to the two teams, Ubuntu and Tshanduko, well done on fi nishing the year off on a high note and for your dedication throughout the year, to put in all the hard training that was essential to achieving your excellent results.

So, Oubal was nie so geskok oor Amla se bedanking as kaptein soos wat die hoofop-

Suid-Afrika in ‘n internasionale binneshuise hokkie-toernooi ver-teenwoordig.
