In a week of high drama during which well-known Tzaneen lawyer Jenke Nagel has been suspended as a lawyer (and is expected to be struck from the roll soon), another prominent local lawyer, Mr Conrad Krüger, will also have to face the Law Society regarding serious allegations of “intolerable” conduct. Nagel will also have to deal with criminal charges, and so will Krüger who stand to be investigated by the Police’s commercial specialist investigators.

An application by the Law Society to suspend Nagel was granted by the Gauteng North Supreme Court a week ago. Nagel did not oppose the application and it is now a matt er of procedure (and time) before he will

be struck from the roll of att orneys.

The Court did not grant an application for suspension against his ex-partner, Ms Karin de Jager, and she may thus continue to practise as a lawyer. The fi rm Krüger Nagel De Jager, however,

has been put under the curatorship of the Law Society to allow for an in-depth investigation to be completed. Mr Johan van Staden, a lawyer who is a full-time employee of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces, has been appointed as the curator.

During the further investigations De Jager may not practise independently though. She will thus be practising in association with another lawyer for the time being.

Complaints against Krüger were submitt ed to the Law Society during the past week. A group of people who bought erven in the Golden Acres Security Estate (developed by Krüger next to the Tzaneen Dam) appointed Mr Stephan van Rensburg to formulate

complaints against Krüger, which will enable both the Law Society and the Police to conduct their investigations into alleged criminal off ences.

Van Rensburg confi rmed on Tuesday that he was busy with the “fi nal touches” to the complaints that will be presented to the Police. He also confi rmed that the complaints to the Law Society had already been submitt ed.

A number of lawyers in Tzaneen have reacted to questions from the Bulletin in the past week, about the danger of the public beginning to perceive that the profession is no more than a crate fi lled with rott en apples. Since that matt er is so sensitive it is understandable that the lawyers did not want to be identifi ed.

The ones we spoke to reacted en masse, saying that it is regrett able that a small community has had to face so many (about ten in the past four, fi ve years) incidents lawyers having transgressed. “But it is an unfortunate coincidence and Tzaneen has a number of lawyers who respect their ethical code and practise faithfully and honestly — respecting their clients’ rights and defending their best interests,” they said with conviction.

• Sadly, two new “lawyer shocks” are on their way and the Bulletin should be able to break the news next week Friday. We have full details of a serious matt er that will be injurious to several members of the public, but we have been requested to hold back publication for a week for strategic reasons.

• The main entrance to Tzaneen (via R71) is not the type of advertisement one wishes for our town. Should it be beautifi ed, especially for the sake of visitors that passes through our town (even if only along one side of town)

Tzaneen

Charmaine Thompson And how would you

improve it?Sue Ettmayr Public bins for recycling plastic,

glass, tins. Are there any besides one at Sugarhill?

jonger geslag in boerderybedrywighede.

Jy boer groot…of jy’s dood

— Milaan Thalwitzer

Suspended GTM municipal man-ager Elias Mankabidi is still sit-ting at home earning his full sal-ary of more than R1 million per year — and his “holiday”, spon-sored by the GTM’s ratepayers, is now going for half a year.

A document has been leaked to the Bulletin and it is clear that the crux of this unfolding drama is a matt er of party political games being played. One of the interesting points in the doc-ument is a confi rmation that Mankabidi was de-ployed by the ANC and that this is causing head-aches for the ruling party (not a surprise, though).

We will next week report in more detail about this unsavoury situation costing the GTM’s rate-payers close to R100 000 per month.

— Francois [email protected]

MM enjoys holidayAre we going to see a lights out (literally) GTM shortly? It sounds like that, if gossip mongers in the “White House” are to be believed.

It is said that Eskom is owed R42 million and that there is not money to pay the account. Rumor also have it that there are concerns about an amount of R18 million (some say it is “only” R9 million) that has “disap-peared” and that the Auditor General is looking for the money.

We are busy invest igat ing and will hope-fully be in a position to re-port back to our readers next week.

Lights out GTM

Dit behoort aan ‘n ander man!

• Natuurlik is ons jaloers trots dat dit iemand uit ons omgewing (Letsitele) is;

• Dit is haas onmoontlik dat iemand die meriete in dié erkenning kan betwis, want dié man se omvangryke boerdery-prestasies is alom bekend;

• In terme van sy integriteit, sy ne-derigheid en sy voortrefl ike mensever-hou-dings sal ‘n beter kandidaat baie wyd gesoek moet word, en dan is dit steeds te betwyfel of so ‘n kandidaat hoe-genaamd gevind sal word;

• Dit is byna vreemd interessant dat ‘n man wat so beskeie en publisiteitsku is, juis deur joernaliste vir ‘n hoogste er-kenning uitgesoek word, en dit is wat die toekenning aan hom des te meer spesiaal maak;

En so meer.Hartlik geluk, mnr Milaan Thalwitzer!

Why is death such a scary thing for most people? Terms such as “passed away”, “went to a bett er place” etc. are used. May-be we just do not like the term “died” yet, it is oft en used in the Bible.

Now, I want to discuss a subject that some might think sounds morbid: “Planning your own funeral.” How oft en do families argue as to what your wishes were aft er you have died? Crema-tion vs burial, what was your favourite song, where do you want your fi nal remains to be left /scatt ered, who should do the service, in which church or where? These questions can lead to descent in the family and sometimes to bad feel-ings. So why not sit down and write what you would like? Much like writing your will out!

Some suggestions as to what should be in this document: Full Name and title; Denomination; Home church; where the service should be held; would you like the Holy Sacraments served at the service; burial or cremation; Name of cemetery(if applicable) or what should be done with your ashes; do you have a funeral policy; name of funeral company; policy no.; who you would prefer to conduct the service; Bible read-ings, psalm or text; what hymns or songs. If there is anything else you would like write it down too.

Once you have done it make sure that the document is placed into safe keeping. Place it with your will and give a copy to your spiritual leader for future reference.

Blessings.

Ons mening The Message

Let us reclaim the words! In Xitsonga there is a word nkata-/nkati-wa-(add relevant pronoun), which literally means spouse. It is unisex. However, the word is of-ten used by other people to refer to a man’s wife or a man will say nkatanga/nkati-wa-mina or nkati-wa-mehe in our area to aff ectionately refer to his wife.

It is somewhat unusual for a woman to refer to her husband as nkatanga or for other people to refer to a man as nkata-add name. Oft en it is progressive educated women who dare exercise their vocabulary rights and refer to their husbands as nkatanga.

It is always with aff ection when a man calls his wife nkatanga. How-

ever, there is oft en a demeaning subjecting tone when other peo-ple refer to a woman as nkati-wa-add name.

I too recently exercised my right to unrestricted vocabulary/freedom of speech and called my boyfriend nka-ti-wa-mehe. He had been calling me nkatanga for some time – projecting to our desired future. I wanted to return the aff ection.

There are many non-gender spe-cifi c words in our everyday lan-guages that are, however, univer-sally restricted to one gender.

I once asked a male friend of mine what he meant by being a real man aft er he had told me that when he grows up he wants to be a

real man. “I want to be responsible, properly look aft er my children and family, not abuse my wife and not be like my dad who never took care of us,” he said.

“Well, if that is what being a real man is, I too want to be a real man when I grow up,” I said.

“In fact, my mother is also a real man because she is responsible, takes care of her children and family and she never abused her spouse, at least none that I know of.”

We of course continued into a de-

bate in which he tried to explain to me that because I am female, I can never be a real man. I should say I want to be a real woman.

However, if being a real man means being

responsible and accountable, as he explained, and because no one ever says they want to be a real woman to imply the same, it is only fair that women also lay claim to the term and aspire the good things it implies.

Man-up is another term which seems to be exclusive to men.

The Macmillan online dictionary states:

Man-up: to start being brave and dealing with a diffi cult situation

The million rand question is, can we as women also man-up or should we never be brave and deal with diffi cult situations?

To be fair, there are also many words that are universally exclusive to women. It, however, becomes tricky to suggest that men should also lay claim to non-gender specif-ic words universally used to refer to women, which is unfortunately to their loss. Gorgeous is my favourite English word. Most men come close to strangling me whenever I argue it is not blasphemy to say a man is gorgeous.

Doing away with gendered-con-trolled vocabularies is arguably a very big move society will need to take to level the ground for all sexes.

Merensky High School in Tzaneen is ex-tremely proud of former Plasie Johannes Jou-bert who matriculated in 1980.

He started his career in the SA Air Force with pilot training in 1981 and received wings at the end of 1983. Joubert was selected for fi ghter training and served as an opera-tional fi ghter pilot on Impala, Cheetah D/E/C and Mirage F1 AZ over the next six years. He was selected for test pilot training and gradu-ated from the International Test Pilot’s School (Cranfi eld) in the UK in 1991 and then com-pleted a six year tour at the SAAF Test Flight and Development Centre.

He continued his studies on a part-time basis and subsequently obtained an M Sc (fl ight dynamics) from Cranfi eld Universi-ty (UK) and is currently completing his Ph D (fl ight dynamics) at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Joubert left the full-time employment of the SAAF in 1997 to join the industry, but was appointed in the Reserve Force as an opera-tional pilot at 2 Squadron, a position that he still holds to date. He was appointed as the industry test pilot on the Gripen programme and lived and worked in Sweden where he obtained extensive international exposure at the technological sharp-end of modern fi ght-er aircraft development.

The combination of his extensive operation-al experience in fi ghter aircraft and his sound academic foundation provided the opportu-nity to be extensively involved in fl ight test programmes both in SA and internationally in many countries, including the UK, Swe-den, Russia, the Middle East and Africa. He received many local and international awards for the accomplishments in his fi eld.

He has been and still is a display pilot on various fi ghter types, including Gripen and has been giving fl ying displays on interna-tional level, including Russia. He is a mem-ber of the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Aeronautical Society of SA and the Society of Experimental Test Pilots (US based). He has been guest lecturer, guest speaker and pre-senter at many international conferences and academic institutions.

Joubert is a founder member of the Incomar Group of companies and is a director of Inco-mar Aerospace and Defence Systems, where he helped develop the group into a signifi -cant player in the defence industry.

His love for and interest in nature and ag-riculture remained strong and he owns and runs game and catt le farms in the Louis Trich-ardt area.

* Joubert will now join other achievers on Mer-ensky’s ever growing hall of fame.

Tzaneen police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe has been awarded for his outstanding perfor-mance in the SAPS. Ngoepe joined the SAPS in 1985. He grew up at Ga-Tau-eatswala, Steilloop, in the Mogalakwena Mu-nicipality.

He was previously also awarded 2005 best spokesperson of the year in Limpopo. He was again honoured by the SABC’s Thobela fm Current Affairs in 2012 as one of SA’s legends for chang-ing the lives of people through mass media communications. He has received a number of other commendations from the SAPS.

Ngoepe says after nineteen years as a SAPS spokesperson, he is truly honoured to have his services recognised in this way. “This award means a lot to me in the sense that I must always inspire the young blood in the SAPS, especially on discipline, com-mitment and dedication,” he said during an interview with the Bulletin.

The SAPS spokesperson says he is de-termined to work harder to ensure that the community is satisfied and safe. “As we ap-proach the festive season, we (the SAPS) are already on our toes to prevent crime and violence in our area,” he added.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENT DIRECTORATEGENERAL WORKERS (29 POSITIONS)

“To be an outstanding agro processing and eco-cultural tourism hub”

Mopani District Municipality’s mayor Nkakareng Rakgoale and Greater Tzaneen Municipality mayor Dikeledi Mmetle recently paid tribute to the families who lost loved ones in the guest house collapse of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Lagos, Nigeria.

Of the 81 South Africans who lost their lives on 12 September, thirteen were from Limpopo. The Mabunda family in Tzaneen lost their daughter Rirhandzu and her aunt, Ms Martha Ngomane, while the Mamafa family grieves

the loss of Mr Mamafa’s siblings, Mr Robert and Ms Dimakatso Maponya. Rakgoale also visited families in the Letaba and Giyani areas where two more families each lost a loved one.

During the special visit to the families in Tzaneen and Nkowa-nkowa, an emotional Mmetle said, “We as the GTM acknow-ledge the families and send our deepest sympathies to them. We will by all means try to assist them in every way possible,” she said during their meeting.

Seen here are Mr Star Mbhalati, MDM chief whip OJ Mushwana, Mr Wire-less Sedibeng, MDM mayor Nkakareng Rakgoale, GTM exco member Ed-ney Ntimbane, MDM secretary George Mkhabele, Ms Phangi Mkhabele

and GTM mayor Dikeledi Mmetle.

The annual Munghana Lonene fm Music Awards returned to Tzaneen aft er successful launches in Auckland Park in 2012 and 2013. The awards were held at the Nkowankowa stadium.

Nominations for the twelft h presentation of the awards were announced in Polokwane last month and the nominees batt led it out in twelve categories, including the newly introduced Dr Thomas Chauke Artist of the Year category — which was awarded to Joe Shirimani.

Kontak haar by 084 414 6166 of 015 307 5029

Oubal se persoonlike gunsteling was die stelling “It’s amazing how polite the players are with the referee for such a rough game!”

‘n Roos vir jou, Nigel !“Dear Abby, a gay couple is moving in

across the street, what can I do to improve the neighbourhood?”

“You could move.” — Abby

Gee hom ‘n Roos! Gee hom ‘n Roos!
