The D8T cab is designed and equipped for operator productivity,safety and comfort. Large single-pane windows, tapered hoodand notched fuel tank provide excellent visibility to all sidesof the machine and around the job site. New standard andoptional light packages extend the productive work day.

ACERT Technology is a combination of buildingblocks that includes electronics, fuel systems, airmanagement systems and aftertreatment components.The system is optimized based on engine size, the typeof application and the geographic location in which itwill work. The technologies are applied systematicallyand strategically to meet high customer expectations forproductivity, fuel ef�ciency, reliability and service life.
Cat NOx Reduction SystemThe Cat NOx Reduction System captures and cools a smallquantity of exhaust gas, then routes it into the combustionchamber where it drives down combustion temperaturesand reduces NOx emissions.
Aftertreatment TechnologiesTo meet Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emissions standards andbeyond, Cat aftertreatment components have been designedto match application needs. System components include aDiesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), which uses a chemicalprocess to convert regulated emissions in the exhaust system,and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that traps particulatematter that is carried into the exhaust stream.
The DOC, DPF and Cat Regeneration System are containedin a Caterpillar designed Clean Emissions Module (CEM) thatprotects the components, minimizes the aftertreatment footprintand simpli�es maintenance. For high debris applications thatrequire thermal shields on exhaust components, an optionalinsulated CEM is available for the D8T (available mid 2011).
Cat Regeneration SystemThe Cat Regeneration System is designed to worktransparently, without any interaction needed from theoperator. Under most operating conditions, engine exhaust ishot enough to oxidize soot through passive regeneration. Ifsupplemental regeneration is needed, the Cat RegenerationSystem elevates exhaust gas temperatures to burn off sootin the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This is a process thathappens automatically, but the operator can initiate the cyclewhen convenient or interrupt regeneration as needed. A sootlevel monitor and regeneration indicator lights are integratedinto the D8T dash display.
Key Off Regeneration – Optional Key Off Regenerationallows the operator to initiate a regeneration cycle after thekey has been turned off. If a cycle takes place, the engine willcomplete regeneration, followed by a cool down period priorto shutting down.
Delayed Engine Shutdown – Delayed Engine Shutdown featureis available to allow the machine to cool immediately after aheavy work load or regeneration cycle.
Engine Idle Shutdown Timer – An optional Engine Idle Shutdowntimer will sound a warning and shut down the engine after themachine has been idling for a pre-set period of time.

PowertrainPowerful ef�ciency
From engine to transmission to �nal drives, the D8T powertrain is designed to turn power into productive work. The D8Toffers unmatched lugging capability and smooth shifting when changing gears under varying loads. The 3-speed forward,3-speed reverse transmission, backed by differential steering, offers excellent run out speeds and accurate steering capability.
Torque DividerA robust, high ef�ciency torque divider provides high torque multiplication to move heavy loads, while shielding the drive trainfrom sudden torque shocks and vibration.
Differential Steering SystemDifferential steering maintains full power to both tracks for best-in-class turning under load. When one track speeds up, theother slows down an equal amount. Maneuverability – especially with large blade loads – is improved, as well as cycle timesin some applications. Greater load capacity, power and speed control are possible in soft underfoot conditions on steep slopesbecause both tracks are powered during turns.
Planetary Power Shift TransmissionThe planetary power shift transmission offers smooth shifting and quick speed and directional changes for maximum productivity.The transmission is built for long life, and a modular design allows for ease of service without removing other components.
Enhanced Auto ShiftThe new Enhanced Auto Shift feature uses the simple “shift up, idle back” principle during forward and reverse travel to savefuel and improve overall dozing cycle fuel ef�ciency.
Auto-Shift/Auto-KickdownAuto-shift allows the operator, by just making a directional change, to go from preset forward to preset reverse gears.Auto-kickdown automatically downshifts the transmission when signi�cant load increases are detected. These features areespecially useful when back�lling or rough grading. Operators can select from a variety of settings, and can override theautomatic shift features at any time.

Steering and Transmission ControlA new steering tiller is ergonomically designed to improve operator comfort. The new thumb roller on the steering control shiftsthe electronically controlled powershift transmission. The tiller allows precise steering in close areas with the �nest modulationin the industry.
Dozer Control LeverThe D8T features an ergonomically designed dozer lever with low effort, electro-hydraulic controls for added operator comfort,ease of operation and precise work tool control. Features such as blade response, blade �oat, auto blade pitch and spread ratecan be set up and adjusted using the Advisor panel. When equipped, single-handle convenience also controls functions likeAccuGrade, Auto Blade Assist, AutoCarry™, Cat Grade Control and Dual Tilt.
Electronic Ripper ControlA rigidly mounted handgrip provides �rm support for the operator even when ripping in the roughest terrain. Thumb and�ngertip controls direct ripper functions. Programmable features like Auto Lift, Shank-Out, Auto Stow and Automatic RipperControl help increase operator ef�ciency.
Throttle Rocker SwitchOne touch of the throttle rocker switch automatically adjusts engine speed to high or low idle. A new feature allows theoperator to press and hold until desired engine speed is reached, then release for the machine to maintain the new chosen speed.

High-CapacityUniversal, Semi-Universal and Angle Blades are available, aswell as special con�gurations for coal and woodchip stockpileapplications.
Optional Dual TiltDual Tilt improves load control and allows the operatorto optimize the blade pitch angle for better balance andproductivity. The operator can tilt the blade forward duringeach pass for better penetration, then tilt it back to increasecarrying capacity.
RippersThe standard D8T implement valve incorporates thecomponents necessary to install a ripper, helping to improveversatility and resale value. A Single-Shank Ripper is the bestchoice in severe applications. The shank is mounted close tothe rear idler for excellent penetration force. A Multi-ShankRipper is used in less severe applications or if ripping neara high wall. This con�guration offers the �exibility of usingone, two or three shanks.
HydraulicsField-proven load-sensing hydraulics respond to operatingrequirements by automatically and continually adjustingattachment hydraulic power for maximum ef�ciency.The variable displacement of the high ef�ciency pumpssupplies maximum �ow rates for tough applications,implement power on operator demand, and consistentpressure output for quick response. The variable �owdesign minimizes hydraulic oil temperatures and saves fuel.
Rear CounterweightsRear counterweights provide proper tractor balance tomaximize dozing production and are recommended whentractor is not equipped with any other rear attachment.

The machine dashboard alsoincludes space to install an AccuGrade display.
AccuGrade Ready OptionThe D8T can be ordered from the factory with optionalbrackets and hardware installed, making the tractor readyto plug in the dealer installed AccuGrade machine controland guidance system. The factory installed ARO simpli�esthe dealer installation of the AccuGrade components andintegration into the machine helps protect components toenhance system robustness.
Cat AccuGradeAccuGrade is a dealer installed machine control andguidance system which enables operators to cut and �llto grade with increased accuracy, minimizing the need fortraditional stakes and grade checkers. AccuGrade usesadvanced Laser, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)and/or Universal Tracking Station (UTS) technology,machine-mounted components and off-board hardware.This state-of-the-art machine control system providesprecise elevation information on an in-cab display to achieveaccurate blade positioning. By displaying real-time cut/�ll information in the cab, operators can improve theiref�ciency and get to grade faster with fewer passes than everbefore. The AccuGrade System signi�cantly improves theproductivity and accuracy of grading equipment – by asmuch as 50 percent over conventional methods.
Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES)Optional technology gives direction on cut and �ll withoutsurvey stakes. Graphical design plan shows machine’shorizontal and vertical position to simplify operation andenhance production. Cat Grade Control (Available mid-2011)Cat Grade Control is an option that integrates traditionalmachine control and guidance with machine hardware andsoftware to help improve productivity, usability, reliabilityand value.
Factory integrated harnesses and sensors allow for real-timeblade tip positioning and offer protection from harsh workingenvironments. Cat Grade Control is a chassis mounted systemthat moves the traditional blade edge positioning technologyto the top of the cab. This �rst-of-its-kind design helps reducereceiver damage, enhances visibility for the operator andeliminates a receiver/antennae, masts and cables. The chassismounted design also allows for accurate “track mapping,”enabling the machine to map job site progress withoutadditional personnel on the ground.
Cat Grade Control software is enhanced to automaticallyguide the blade to the desired design contours. Integrated withAutoCarry, it also senses and controls the load of the bladefor improved performance and ef�ciency in high productiondozing applications.
AutoCarry™ – Automates blade lift control to maintain adesired blade load, improve job consistency and to reduceoperator fatigue. Works seamlessly with Cat Grade Controland Auto Blade Assist. This new generation in integratedmachine control and guidance makes the track-type tractornot only a grading machine, but a high productivity solution.
Automatic Ripper Control – Assists the operator by automaticallycontrolling ripper depth based on track slip. This helpsoperators be more productive, as well as reduces wearand tear on the machine.
Auto Blade Assist – Automates blade pitch and lift controlduring a typical dozing cycle to help reduce operator fatigue.Functionality varies depending on the components andsoftware installed on the machine and can be operated inconjunction with AutoCarry.
Grade Protection – Operating mode that prevents blade tipsfrom going below the site design plan. Grade Protectionoverrides/blocks manual commands when necessary to limitblade travel, offering operators added con�dence.

The engine radiator, Air ToAir After Cooler (ATAAC) andhydraulic oil cooler are packagedin a single plane. Aluminum barplate construction aids durabilityand allows for higher heat transferand superior corrosion resistance.The standard cores feature 6 �nsper inch to allow debris to passthrough and reduce pluggingconcerns.
In cooler conditions, a HydraulicallyDriven Demand Fan reduces speedto conserve power, save fuel, anddecrease sound levels.
An optional Reversing Fan canbe set to change air �ow direction,ef�ciently removing debris from thecooling cores without the operatorleaving the cab. To improve coreserviceability, the cooling packagealso includes air wand or brushaccess slots. The ROPS mountedair conditioning system workswith the reversing fan for optimumfan purging and ambient coolingcapability.
UndercarriageEngineered for performance
The D8T features the Cat elevated sprocket design that isolates �nal drives,axles, and steering components from harsh impacts. The modular design aidsserviceability to help reduce maintenance costs. A variety of undercarriagecon�gurations and track shoe designs help optimize performance andundercarriage life.
Heavy Duty Undercarriage with Positive Pin Retention Moderate Service Sealedand Lubricated Track (SALT) is standard. This undercarriage is well suited toaggressive applications like land clearing, side-slopes, or working in rocky oruneven terrain. Components are designed for extended wear life in abrasiveconditions and high impact applications.
SystemOne™ Undercarriage is available as an option and can help reduce totalundercarriage owning and operating costs in many applications. SystemOne featureslifetime sealed and lubricated cartridges to eliminate bushing turns, and sprocketsrequire no replacement during the life of the chain. The D8T pivot shaft runs through the mainframeand connects to the roller frames, allowing independentoscillation. The full-length pivot shaft distributes impactloads throughout the case, reducing the bending stress onthe case. The Tag-Link brings the blade closer to the machinefor more precise dozing and load control. The designprovides solid lateral stability and better cylinder positionsfor constant break out force, independent of blade height.

Ease of ServiceabilityThe D8T offers full left-side engine serviceability, including �lltube, dipstick, air cleaner, fuel �lters, oil �lter and coolant levelcheck. Cooling system access is also improved for inspectionand cleaning. To reduce maintenance cost and time, the D8Tfeatures a new high capacity �lter element and improvedpowertrain �lter bypass strategy to extend service intervals.The in-cab monitoring system also provides electronic �uidlevel veri�cation at startup for the coolant, powertrainand engine oil systems.
