The Library of Libraries for the 21st Centuryat the Campus Condorcet
The observatory focuses on documents wri5en in the mainlanguages of culture in Medieval and Renaissance Europe(Arabic, French, Greek, Hebrew, LaDn, etc.) and contributesto a be5er understanding of the circulaDon of texts, theevoluDon of libraries and the transmission of knowledge inEurope from the 8th to 18th centuries.

2 — The to do List
about 70% of the fundingis for data sets (contents)
We want to store, create and expose data on a large scaleand at different levels
according to predefined themaDc fields and prioriDes
1. Documentary data and images providestarDng points for research, such as cardindexes built up over the course of severaldecades and the databases which followedthem, or digiDzed manuscripts and earlyprinted sources.
2. ScienDfic data created, produced,and/or drawn together by Biblissima.
3. Digital ediDons of ancient texts, directlyavailable from the assembled databasesand repositories, united in Biblissima (e. g.MonWaucon, Bibliotheca bibliothecarum).
25% of the fundingfor the Observatory (tools)
We want to create a systemfor managing and analysing historical data:
the full range of scienDfic tools that researchers need
1. Interconnected digital imagerepositories.
2. Coordinated sets of databases.
3. User-‐friendly digital ediDon tools whichmeet diverse and mulDple needs.
The main idea is to connect toolsin an open-‐access network.
How can we ensure the growth and the long-‐term preservaDon of the BiblissimaObservatory?Through training, on all levels:
1. scienDfic disseminaDon in a scholarlyenvironment: summer schools (2013Chartres -‐ 2014 Troyes)
2. (online) training in classics (ancientlanguages, scholarly methods, help withcataloguing) and digital humaniDes : “theBiblissima toolkit”
3. diffusion and promoDon for an audience of allages and levels: calls for projects

4 — Working together
Image interoperability
SharedCanvas and IIIF:collaboraDon with Stanford, and an internaDonal community
Ontology & thesaurus
The choice of refinement and compaDbility
— Biblissima is developing an ontology and a thesaurus inthe fields of the transmission of books and texts
— Biblissima is collaboraDng with the French Ministry ofCulture, and focussing on the vocabularies needed for thescienDfic descripDon of manuscripts (codicology, palaeography, textual criDcism…)
Next step
Working together
— by developing other fields (e.g. for the descripDon ofearly printed books)
— by developing mulDlingual thesauri: internaDonalinteroperability ab ovo
Authority Files
— CollaboraDon with the Bibliothèque naDonale deFrance to build a set of authority files (people, insDtuDons, texts) with ARK idenDfiers
— CollaboraDon with university libraries
— IntegraDon of BnF ids in VIAF and ISNI databases
XML Editor
— A scholar-‐friendly soluDon (LTR and RTL): XXE (Caen)
— Perhaps a common tool for BUs, BMs and the BnF: canwe make interoperable catalogues a priori?
