Building Text Dependent Students!
Text Dependent Questions Aligned to Common Core Standards www.247teacher.us @24/7 Teacher
I hope that you enjoy this sample of my September Close Reading Unit. The full unit is your one stop September shop! It has everything you need and more! As with many of my other units, I designed it with “Close Reading” and “Text Evidence” in mind. Helping students to be text dependent is a goal of mine: rest assured that each question I write relies completely on text evidence.
www.247teacher.us @24/7 Teacher
I have seen teachers implement a variety of techniques to help students read closely. Each teacher has their own style. We are all unique and interpret our professional learning experiences differently. From the ways we read with a pen to annotating in the margins or using sticky notes. Each of us practice different procedures--- all of which have the same result--- creating students who are reading closely and text dependent.
Following six years of teaching, I was offered the position of Instructional Coach. After two years in that role, I went back into the classroom to teach second grade. With an excited heart, I put into practice dozens and dozens of professional development hours that I attended and facilitated. In my classroom, I was also able to apply snapshots all of the breathtaking teaching I observed.
I started creating these units for my 28 intervention students. At my school, resources were limited. I spent countless hours planning and preparing lessons for my own class and my intervention students. Later, I kicked it up a notch and decided to differentiate levels for my mixed ability class. Because I am ELL/ESOL certified, I even had students who came in as non-English speakers. In September, the levels of my students ranged from DRA 4 to DRA 28. To make sure each of my little ones made gains, I worked 24/7. By the end of the year, all of my students made one to two years growth. It is a pleasure to share my creations. Why am I sharing my story? Because only a teacher can know and create what students need.
