CHENACT • Objective: to improve the
competiveness of small – medium
size hotels in the region through
improved use of energy (EE and
conservation) and renewable
energy(RE)
Achievements in Barbados
• Conducted detailed energy and water audits in 43 hotels and walk-
throughs in 30
• Conducted re-audits of 12
• 3 PV demonstration projects in hotels
• Clean Hotel Energy Policy for hotels
• Electricity efficiency index for (<50, 51-100, 101-200, >200 room
hotels)
• Estimates of total electricity consumption and carbon footprint of
Barbados hotel sector
• Assessment of financing sources for hotel energy investment,
including input to SMART Energy Fund design, cash flow model,
support to 15 hotel’s financing plans
• Inventory of current refrigerant use (ODS) in air conditioning and
refrigeration equipment in the hotel sector (performed by UNEP)
Achievements in Barbados
• Design of PoA for Tourism Sector and registration with
UNFCCC:
Sale of Carbon emission reductions from Implementation
of Energy Saving Opportunities identified in the CHENACT
audits
The first hotel to participate is the Crane Resort and
several others have been identified
• Analysis of NAMA sector and methodologies for accessing
Climate Funding
• Inclusion in the Barbados INDC and will collaborate with
GoB on the NDC to the UNFCCC

What is a Green job?
• A green job, also called a green-collar job
is, according to the United Nations
Environment Program, "work in
agricultural, manufacturing, research and
development (R&D), administrative, and
service activities that contribute(s)
substantially to preserving or restoring
environmental quality”.
Green jobs/careers
A Green Job/ Career can be any job/occupation that is affected by
activities such as:
• Conserving energy/water,
• Reducing waste,
• Reducing Carbon Emissions
• Reuse of discarded products
• Recycling etc.
• Developing alternative energy
• Designing alternative water sources
• Developing alternative food sources
Green careers fall into three groups:
Higher Demand Green Jobs
In these fields, the job duties aren’t changing but the sectors will
probably grow because of the increased demand for green goods and
services. Some examples include:
• Bus Drivers, Conductors, Mechanics, who will be needed to fill an
increased demand for public transport
• Agricultural Inspectors, who will help meet the increased demand
for organic and sustainable growing/farming techniques, and new
government regulations.
• Carpenters and Labourers who will be needed to work on green
construction or retrofitting projects.
• Energy and Water Technicians
• Agricultural workers to fill demand for locally grown food
Changing Skills Green Jobs
These fields are adding new tasks or specialty areas because of the
demand for green goods and services. Some examples include:
• Construction Managers, who may need to learn more about green
construction and retrofitting.
• Public Relations Specialists, who may need to develop expertise in
marketing green products or services.
• Farmers and Landscapers who may need to expand sustainable
growing/ farming practices.
• Hotel and Restaurant Managers, Maintenance Managers,
Purchasing Managers etc who will have to incorporate
sustainability into the daily operations
• Retail managers selling green products, i.e. light bulbs
New Green Occupations
New Green Occupations are those that are emerging or will become
mainstream because of green trends. Some examples include:
• Green Developers
• Environmental Auditors ( including Energy and Water auditors)
• Environmental Officers, who oversee green activities at their
organizations.
• Wind /Solar /Ocean /Bio, Energy Engineers,
• Green trainers
• Climate Change experts
• Noise and Light Pollution experts
• Low Impact transportation sales persons/ experts
• Green roof designers
• Re-Trainers
Green Enterprises
• BBC “Money for Nothing” • Welders • Upholsters • Artists • Charity shops/2nd hand shops • Trainers to teach how to “upscale” no longer wanted
items • Teaching entrepreneurship • Seaweed- food, drinks, mulch etc • Green Products- cleaning agents etc. • Locally made soaps and beauty products
