Scale up is supported up to a

configuration with Four (4)

B460 Boards – this yields

133,000 SAPs. This is a large

amount of non-HANA database

capacity.

If you need more than 133,000

SAPs on the database server

and hence need to scale out

across blades, a product like

Oracle RAC or DB2 PureScale

is required.

SAP and HANA on VCE – Scale and Sizing Drivers

Non-

HANA HANA

Scale up is supported up to 2TB for

Suite on HANA and up to 1TB for BW

on HANA

Non-Virtualized Scale out is

supported up to 5TB for Suite on

HANA and up to 10TB for BW on

HANA.

Scale out currently only works with

the 512GB blades.

VCE is working on completing

certification for both the 1TB and

2TB blades and expects to receive this

within the next 60 days. This will

increase the maximum size of the scale

out model.

The rule for the relationship of disk to

HANA instance is that for each 2TB of

HANA, you can have a maximum of

forty-eight (48) 600GB 15K drives.

Due to this limitation the VMAX 10K

has a maximum capacity of 960

physical disk drives (~227TB

useable).

What did we learn?

…in the review of the SAP BOM. Regional Sales teams and even vendor

solution architects do not always have the knowledge of the necessary

adjustments to out of the box VCE IaaS configuration required for SAP TDI.

…Make sure it’s well marked as an SAP TDI solution! Make sure

that the necessary adjustments to front end cabling and back end LUN

masking required for TDI certification are indicated in the LCS form.

…for Suse in view of your high availability and DR replication

design, on both HANA and non-HANA instances..

…to overcome some of the limits around HANA on Vsphere. Stay current

on the announcements, and close to the experts that can help you utilize

VMware tools around high availability, capacity planning, and operations

management to actively manage and contain you SAP landscape components.

Overview of SAP HANA on VMware Vsphere 5.5

At present, SAP has only certified HANA to be

virtualized on VMware’s hypervisor.

This certification is for both non-production and

production implementations of HANA.

On

Compute used for the ESX farm must be the exact same bill of

materials as a certified appliance with or without the storage.

You may find the list of certified appliances here.

http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-52522

SAN must be certified storage. You may find this list here.

http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-48516

SAP HANA Installation must be done by a certified technology

specialist for SAP HANA installations. See exam

E_HANAINS131.

The restriction on Production systems having to be the only VM

running on an ESX host has been lifted! This restriction is

expected to As always, multiple non-production HANA VMs can

run on a single ESX host without restriction.

As of now vMotion, DRS, and HA are the only VMware features

that are supported in a HANA environment. Other features are

currently being tested by VMware and SAP.

There are restrictions (mentioned below ).

Capgemini’s planned vHANA environment will be

based on TDI architecture so restrictions listed

below will apply.

For a complete listing of all requirements, including a best practices configuration

checklist, please see the links provided in the “Sources” slide of this document.

Considerations Resources cannot be over committed. This means no over

provisioning of CPU or Memory resources of the ESX host.

Sizing should be done exactly the same as bare-metal

appliances.

VMware is currently limited to 64 vCPU and 1TB of memory.

Because of this limitation, the largest vHANA system supported is

1TB.

Hyper-threading should be enabled for best performance,

however, the tables listed in this document should be referenced

for CPU:MEM ratios. With hyper-threading there is an expected

performance improvement of 10-20%.

There is a maximum performance penalty of 10% with a

virtualized HANA instance.

Supporting HANA on Vsphere Effectively What we have Learned

Establish a VMWare Community within hosting so that system administrators and basis

consultants can share information and establish common standards.

Encourage technical professionals to certify with VMWare at the level appropriate for

their roles. System Administrators pursue technical certification, others pursue sales

certifications.

Engage actively with VMWare Alliance to keep current on leading practice information,

both with the core suite and how to apply the technology to the SAP stack.

Capgemini hosts functions with account-focused and account-

facing delivery teams. Team members must work to deliver the

best possible service and leverage the platform effectively.
