HOW CTCC BENEFITS OUR COMMUNITY

•CTCC’s primary goal for Community Daysand its Community Project of the Year is toencourageresidentsandbusinessestosupportand become involved with one of the manynonprofitandcivicgroupsthathelpmakeourcommunitybetter.Manyofournonprofit/civicgroupshaveincreasedtheirmembershipsincethiseffortbegan.

•CTCCpromotesthenonprofitandcivicgroupsviaCommunityDays,theCommunitySign,theHolidayTreeGallery,etc.

•CTCC seeds new services and projects thatimprove our community such as the Projectof the Year. But we have also used tens ofthousands of dollars to seed other worthycausesandprojects.

•CTCC helps to build a sense of Community,which isoneof themaindriversofsuccessfulcommunities. It creates the connection ofindividualsandbusinessestotheircommunities.

•CTCCstartedtheCranberryLegacyEndowment,a community foundation that allows donorsto support many of our nonprofit groupsindefinitely. We are closing in on almost $1million in assets in the four years since theEndowmentwasstarted.

•CTCC believes in our Four Pillars: businesses,faithcommunities,nonprofit/civicgroups,andlocalgovernment/schools.

•CTCC has expanded Community Days froma one-day event which has been 95 percentfundedandstaffedbytheTownship,toathree-day festival of artists, carnival, and concertsthat draws tens of thousands of people andover600volunteers. Lastyearweraisedover$150,000formorethan50nonprofitandcivicgroups and helped get more members andvolunteersformanyofthesegroups.Itisatruecelebration of Cranberry’s nonprofit and civicorganizations.

FITNESS STATIONS Whyshouldkidshaveallthefun?CTCC’s2014projectoftheyearcreatedaseriesoffreshairfitnessstations inGrahamandNorthBoundaryParks,spe-cificallydesignedforadultstomaintainmuscletone,cardio-vascularconditioningandpersonalfitness.

KIDS CASTLE (front cover) By 2012, following 22yearsofsteadyuseandcontinuousmaintenance,CranberryCommunityPark’smuch-lovedwoodenPlaytimePalaceplaystructurehadfallenintoseriousdisrepair.Plansforabigger,betterandsaferreplacementplaygroundcul-minatedin2013withthedesignforKidsCastle.ItwasajointprojectofCranberryCUP,CranberryTownship,andCTCC,alongwiththousandsofstudentsandhun-dredsofvolunteerlaborersandfundraisers.

THE ARTS Strengthening Cranberry’s fine artscommunity and establishing public venues for boththetemporarydisplayandpermanent installationofartworktooksomemajorsteps forward in2012.Analliance with the Arts Association of Butler Countyled to several high-quality exhibits in theMunicipalCenter.Cranberry’scommitmenttotheartsincludesmusicalconcerts,ArtinthePark,andMartiniswithMonet,along with ‘yarn bombing’ of park trees and fencing. Allthese activities contributed tobuilding the Township’s en-gagementwiththearts.

CRANBERRY PARK VANDALISM When GrahamPark was vandalized early this year, many residents wereshockedanddisappointed.TheCTCCBoardagreedtocon-tribute$10,000towardstherepairsoftheparkdamages.

THE CRANBERRY LEGACY ENDOWMENT AnewcommunityfoundationwaslaunchedbyCTCCin2010.Itsmissionistobenefitlocalnonprofit/civicgroupsbyestab-lishingdedicatedendowmentstoprovideaperpetualsourceof income for specific communityorganizations. Wehavealreadyestablishedmorethanadozenendowmentswithas-setsexceeding$1,000,000.Thisnewsourceoffinancialsup-portwillhavealargeimpactonCranberryanditsnonprofit/civicgroupsgoingforward.Tolearnmore,goto:www.cran-

ANNUAL CTCC REPORT The re-port is sent to every Cranberry homeand business in June prior to CTCCCommunityDays. Itprovidesthemwithanopportunitytofindoutaboutdozensofnonprofitgroupsandhowtosupportor join them. We also recognize morethan 600 residents nonprofit memberswhovolunteeredatleast50hourstoournonprofit/civic groups during the prioryear.

ANNUAL CTCC COMMUNITY DAYSThiscelebra-tionofCranberry’snonprofitandcivicgroupssawmorethan50organizations raiseover$155,000duringour three-dayevent. Morethan20,000peopleattendedand600othersvolunteered.

2014 FITNESS STATIONSFitnesshasbecomeapreoc-cupationforpeopleofeveryageinCranberry.Tohelpresidentskeepinshapeandremainhealthy,CTCC’sCommunityProjectoftheYearfor2014willbethecreationoffitnesstrailsinseveralofitsparks.Trailsoutfittedwithexercisestationsalongtheirlength,alsoknownasparcourses,makeitconvenientforpeopletoexerciseandpromotegoodhealth.Equipmentalongthese

trailscanconsistofnaturalfeaturessuchasclimbablerocks,trees,orstreamembankments,aswellasmanufacturedproductsincludingsteppingposts,chin-upandclimbingbars.TheexactmixoffeaturesalongthefitnesstrailsinCranberry’sparkswillbedeterminedthisyearbyaplanningcommitteeintimeforinstallationduring2014.

2013 KIDS CASTLEKidsCastle–thereplacementplay-groundforCranberryCommunityPark’s22-yearoldPlaytimePalacewasatruecommunityproject.Thedesignwascreatedbylocalcitizensandstudents.Laborwasprovidedbylocalresi-dentsandmostofthematerialsweredonatedbylocalbusinesses.Theplayareathemesweredesignedtoreflectlocalhistory.Fundingcamemainlyfromlocalcharities,familiesand

individualswhorecognizedthevaluethatafirst-rateplay-groundbringstothecommunity–toourcommunity.

2012 SALUTING SCOUTS 100TH ANNIVERSARYTheBoyScoutsofAmericamarkedits100thanniversarylastyear.TheGirlScoutsofAmericawillobservetheircentennialthisyear.BothorganizationshavemadeimportantcontributionstoAmericanlifeandtoCranberryTownship.Intheirhonor,wearelookingtowardaproject–notyetfinalized–whichwouldfeatureacommemorativemonumentandstone

plazaattheedgeofafishingpondalreadyunderdevelop-mentinGrahamParknearthebaseballcampus.

2011 CRANBERRY COMMUNITY SIGNIn2010,CTCCformedacoalitionofpartnersincludingRotary,theLions,theChamberofCommerce,andtheTownshipgovernmenttomakebuildinganelectroniccommunityinformationsigntheirsignatureprojectoftheyear.Thestate-of-the-artsign–situatedinfrontofUPMC–isenableslocalnonprofitswitheventscominguptopromotethemonthesignwhereasmanyas100,000vehiclespasseveryday.

THE PROBLEM:Nationwide there has been a serious decline of volunteerfirefighters. In Pennsylvania, volunteers went from 300,000 in 1970 to50,000today.Inourstate(andcounty),over96%ofourfirecompaniesarevolunteers. In2004ButlerCountyhad36 volunteer fire companies, todaywehave33andtheaverageageofvolunteerfirefightersisontherise.Thedeclineof volunteer firefighters is costingus all in higherhome insuranceas the demands of higher frequencies is putting larger demands on thevolunteersthatwecurrentlyhave(Butlercountydispatcheswere75,000in1996andin2013grewto94,250).Thisproblemhasbeentalkedaboutforthelastdecadebuttalkingisnotthesolution.

THE SOLUTION: The 2015 Project of the Year; the Volunteer FirefighterInitiativewillnotonlyhelpourowncommunitybutallthecommunitiesinButlerCounty.tisarealapproachtostemthedeclineofvolunteerfirefightersand a proactive approach to increase the number of volunteers in futureyears.Butthesuccessofthisprojectdependsonyouandmetogetinvolvedandprovidesupporttomakeitareality.

The project has three elements that will be implemented:

1. RECRUITMENT -Refocusattentionon firefighter recruitmentaswell as theappreciationof currentvolunteers.Recognizeourcurrentvolunteersbynameandyearsofservice.ThesearethepeoplewhoareourunsunglocalheroeswhoVOLUNTEERtheirtimetomakeourcommunitysafer.

2. TRAINING-AcquiringanEmergency-FireTrainingTrailer.Thistrailerwillbeavailabletovolunteerfirecompaniesthroughouttheareaforfire-emergencytrainingintheircommunities,schools,andbusinesses.Thisisaverysophisticatedtrailerandwillhelpsavelivesthroughitstrainingbenefits.Itwillalsoserveasarecruitmentcenterhelpingtoplanttheseedsforpeopletoconsiderbecomingavolunteerfirefighter.

3. OPPORTUNITY-ScholarshipsforcollegeatButlerCountyCommunityCollegeinreturnforthestudentobtainingtheirFireEssentialsandFireFighter1(about172hoursoftraining)andathreeyearcommitmenttothevolunteerfirecompany.ThisscholarshipwillbeavailableforanymajoravailablewithinBC3.

OUR GOAL:15-20scholarshipsperyearatBC3,whichisthesecondlargestfiretrainingfacilityinthestate,trainingfirefightersin27counties.

All together, this is a projectwill take about $500,000 to accomplish.Wearehoping for broad support frombothresidentsandbusinessestoacknowledgetheimportanceofourvolunteerfirecompanies.

MICHELLE S. SWITALA LIBRARY FUND (2009)MichelleSwitala,avoraciousreader,gourmetcook,chairofthePine-Richlandmathematicsdepartment,doctoralcandidate,part-timePittfacultymemberandgiftedamateurmusicianwasnamedPennsylvania’s2009TeacheroftheYear.Her2009endowment isdedicated to funding theCranberryPublic Li-brary.“Ilovetheconceptofapubliclibrary,”shesaid.“IsetupmyendowmenttotheCranberryPublicLibraryasawaytokeepourlibrarycurrent,beautifulandexciting.”MichelleisalsoaformermemberandpastPresidentoftheLi-brary’sBoard.

THE SAMUEL AND CAROL TROESE LIBRARY FUND (2010)SamuelandCarolTroesemovedtoCranberrywhenithadjustover4,000res-idents; both emerged as pillars of their adopted community. Sam, a healthplanningprofessional,wantedtoseedevelopmentcomeinanorderlyfashion,sohe joined theTownship’splanning commission.HealsobecameaButlerCounty representative to the Southwestern Pennsylvania Regional PlanningCommissionandamemberoftheTownship’szoninghearingboardchargedwithoverseeingthedesignandconstructionoftheTownship’snewMunicipalCenter.Carol,whoearnedalibrarysciencedegreeatPitt,becameavolunteerforCranberry’sstartuplibraryand,in1984,becamethefacility’slibrarian.Sixyearsago,Samdiedofcanceratage61.Fouryearslater,Carolalsosuccumbedtocancer.TohonorthecouplewhodidsomuchforCranberryTownship,theirfamilycreatedanendowmentfundintheirmemory.

ANNABEL TURNER LIBRARY PILLAR FUND (2010)AresidentofCranberryTownshipandSherwoodOaksfor22years,Ms.Turner,whopassedawayin2004atage97,isrememberedforamajordonationshemadetotheChildren’sLibraryexpansionin2000.AgraduateofCarnegieIn-stituteofTechnology,nowCMU,Ms.Turnerwasanavidreaderofclassicsandhistory. In herwill she remembered the Librarywhich, combinedwithherpriorgifts,madeMs.Turnerthesingle largestdonor in the library’shistory.ThroughthisfundhergenerositywillbeperpetuatedandcontinuetosupporttheCranberryLibrary.

EDNA T. WALTER LIBRARY FUND (2010)Edna “Tommie”Walter is a resident of SherwoodOaks and an avid bridgeplayerwithalife-longloveforlibraries. SheunderstandsthatlibrariesformanimportantcommunityassetandsupportedthatbeliefwithadonationofstockthatwillhelptofostergreatprogramsandimprovetheCranberryPublicLibrary’sresources.

THE BILL & JEAN HEIDENREICH LIBRARY FUND (2010) Long-timeCranberryresidentsBillandJeanHeidenreichbothplayedrolesinformingtheCranberryPublicLibrary.Billservedonthelibrary’sBoardofTrust-eesduringitsearlyyears.Jeanworkedatthelibraryasaclerkfor18years,untilherretirementin1997.UponBill’sdeathin1982,thefamilyestablishedtheHeidenreichMemorialFundatCranberryPublicLibrary.Itwasusedtoex-pandthelibrary’scollection.Jeanlaterremarried,andwhenbothsheandherhusbandpassedawayin2009,thefamilyonceagainthoughtofthelibraryandthefundtheyhadcreatedinmemoryoftheirparents.

BARBARA BLACKSTONE LIBRARY FUND (2011)BackwhenshewasPresidentof theRowanSchoolPTA,BarbaraBlackstoneandagroupofmothersdecidedtostartaschoollibraryaswellasapublicone,housedintheoriginalTownshipBuilding.Theyweregrantedasmallspaceforreaders,butthebookswerestoredinaclosetintheone-storybuilding.Whenthe Township added a second floor, the “library”moved upstairs. In 1991,Cranberry’snewTownshipbuildinggavethelibraryspaceAndBarbara,whowasavolunteer instructorforSlipperyRock’s InstituteofLearning inRetire-ment,servedasecondtermonCranberry’sLibraryBoard.

PROJECT OF THE YEAR FUNDSTOM & LEE COYLE LEGACY ENDOWMENT FUND (2012)TomCoylespentalifetimeintheScouts.Duringthelate1930s,hebecameanEagleScout.FollowinghisreturnfrommilitaryserviceasaMarineinWorldWarII,hemadeacareerofScouting,ultimatelybecomingExecutiveDirectoroftheMoraineTrailsCounciloftheBoyScoutsinButlerCountyfrom1962to1984.TomandLeahmade theirhome inButler, raising their threechildrenthere.Theyweremarriedfor52years.Leahspent30yearsasaninstrumentalmusicteacherintheButlerAreaSchoolDistrictandwasanactivememberoftheArtistAssociationofButlerCountyuntilherdeath in2001.Tompassedaway in2004.Funding for themonument–whichhonorsthecentennialofScouting in the United States – came from his children Tim Coyle, ColleenCoyleOszustowicz,andConniCoyleMazzoni.

PNC PROJECT OF THE YEAR FUND (2012)This endowment was established to help support current and future CTCCProjectsoftheYear,beginningwithourfirstproject,theelectronicCommunitySignattheintersectionofRoutes19and228.TheideaofcommunityProjectsoftheYearistocreatepublicengagementandbuildastrongersenseofcom-munity–bothofwhicharefundamentaltothelong-termsuccessofCranberryTownship.

MARGERY HIMES PROJECT OF THE YEAR HERITAGE FUND (2013)A committedmemberof theCranberry community and a resident of Sher-woodOaks,MargeryHimesbelievedinthemissionofCTCCandofCranberry’sPublicLibrary.Herestateleftacontinuinglegacyinhername.Bornin1924,MargerygraduatedfromChathamCollege,andreceivedherMaster’sDegreeinEducationfromtheUniversityofPittsburgh.ShetaughtelementaryschoolinruralCentralPennsylvaniafor27years. Amongherfriends,Margerywasknown forher loveofbirds,wildlifeand thegreatoutdoors. CANDLE, Inc. / Reality Tour (CANDLE)Butler-based CANDLE, Inc. developed a trademarked parent andchilddrugpreventionprogramitcallsTheRealityTour–athree-houreveningprogramforchildrenage10andolder,accompaniedbyaparent.Itprovidesinnovative,cost-effectivedrugpreventioneducationatthecommunitylevelforparents,childrenandschools.The tour includes healthcare professionals, law enforcement,recoveringaddicts,civicorganizations,andyouthgroupsanchoredby a dramatic narrative portrayal of a teen on heroin.
