• CT AMENDMENT 105.2 WORK EXEMPT FROM PERMIT:• EXEMPTION FROM THE PERMIT REQUIREMENTS OF THIS CODE SHALL NOT BE DEEMED TO GRANT AUTHORIZATION FOR

ANY WORK TO BE DONE IN ANY MANNER IN VIOLATION OF THE PROVISIONS OF THIS CODE OR ANY OTHER LAWS, STATUTES, REGULATIONS OR ORDINANCES OF THE TOWN, CITY OR BOROUGH, OR THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT.

WORK EXEMPT FROM PERMIT

• ELECTRICAL:• 1. LISTED CORD-AND-PLUG CONNECTED TEMPORARY DECORATIVE LIGHTING.• 2. REINSTALLATION OF ATTACHMENT PLUG RECEPTACLES BUT NOT THE OUTLETS THEREFOR.• 3. REPLACEMENT OF BRANCH CIRCUIT OVERCURRENT DEVICES OF THE REQUIRED CAPACITY IN THE SAME LOCATION.• 4. ELECTRICAL WIRING, DEVICES, APPLIANCES, APPARATUS OR EQUIPMENT OPERATING AT LESS THAN 25 VOLTS AND

NOT CAPABLE OF SUPPLYING MORE THAN 50 WATTS OF ENERGY.• 5. MINOR REPAIR WORK, INCLUDING THE REPLACEMENT OF LAMPS AND FUSES OR THE CONNECTION OF APPROVED

PORTABLE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT TO APPROVED PERMANENTLY INSTALLED RECEPTACLES.

WORK EXEMPT FROM PERMIT

• PLUMBING:• 1. THE STOPPING OF LEAKS IN DRAINS, WATER, SOIL, WASTE OR VENT PIPE; PROVIDED IF ANY CONCEALED TRAP,

DRAINPIPE, WATER, SOIL, WASTE OR VENT PIPE BECOMES DEFECTIVE AND IT BECOMES NECESSARY TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE SAME WITH NEW MATERIAL, SUCH WORK SHALL BE CONSIDERED AS NEW WORK AND A PERMIT SHALL BE OBTAINED AND INSPECTION MADE AS PROVIDED IN SECTIONS R105 AND R109 OF THIS CODE.

• 2. THE CLEARING OF STOPPAGES OR THE REPAIRING OF LEAKS IN PIPES, VALVES OR FIXTURES, AND THE REMOVAL AND REINSTALLATION OF WATER CLOSETS, PROVIDED SUCH REPAIRS DO NOT INVOLVE OR REQUIRE THE REPLACEMENT OR REARRANGEMENT OF VALVES, PIPES OR FIXTURES.

REPAIRS

• R105.2.1 EMERGENCY REPAIRS. WHERE EQUIPMENT REPLACEMENTS AND REPAIRS MUST BE PERFORMEDIN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION, THE PERMIT APPLICATION SHALL BE SUBMITTED WITHIN THE NEXTWORKING BUSINESS DAY TO THE BUILDING OFFICIAL.

• R105.2.2 REPAIRS. APPLICATION OR NOTICE TO THE BUILDING OFFICIAL IS NOT REQUIRED FORORDINARY REPAIRS TO STRUCTURES, REPLACEMENT OF LAMPS OR THE CONNECTION OF APPROVEDPORTABLE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT TO APPROVED PERMANENTLY INSTALLED RECEPTACLES. SUCH REPAIRSSHALL NOT INCLUDE THE CUTTING AWAY OF ANY WALL, PARTITION OR PORTION THEREOF, THE REMOVALOR CUTTING OF ANY STRUCTURAL BEAM OR LOAD-BEARING SUPPORT, OR THE REMOVAL OR CHANGEOF ANY REQUIRED MEANS OF EGRESS, OR REARRANGEMENT OF PARTS OF A STRUCTURE AFFECTING THEEGRESS REQUIREMENTS; NOR SHALL ORDINARY REPAIRS INCLUDE ADDITION TO, ALTERATION OF,REPLACEMENT OR RELOCATION OF ANY WATER SUPPLY, SEWER, DRAINAGE, DRAIN LEADER, GAS, SOIL,WASTE, VENT OR SIMILAR PIPING, ELECTRIC WIRING OR MECHANICAL OR OTHER WORK AFFECTINGPUBLIC HEALTH OR GENERAL SAFETY.

WORKING TOGETHER

• NEED TO WORK WITH BOTH THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND BUILDING DEPARTMENT. THE BUILDING OFFICIAL SHOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN WELL PERMITS ARE APPLIED FOR.

TRENCHING

• THE LOCAL BUILDING INSPECTOR SHOULD BE INSPECTING THE TRENCHES.

• IRC SECTION P2603.5 REQUIRES WATER SERVICE PIPE TO BE INSTALLED NOT LESS THAN 6 INCHES BELOW THE FROST LINE. THAT WOULD BE 48 INCHES TO THE TOP OF THE PIPE IN CT.

• IRC SECTION P2603.4 REQUIRES THE SLEEVE THROUGH A FOUNDATION WALL TO BE TWO PIPE SIZES GREATER THAN THE PIPE PASSING THROUGH THE WALL.

TRENCHING (CONT.)

• IRC SECTION 2604.1 – BOTTOM OF THE TRENCH SHALL FORM THE BED OF THE PIPE AND SHALL PROVIDE A SOLID AND CONTINUOUS SUPPORT.

• NO ROCKS IN CONTACT WITH THE PIPING.• ROCKY SOILS SHALL BE OVER-EXCAVATED BY

TWO PIPE DIAMTERES AND BROUGH UPWITH SUITABLE MATERIAL (SAND, FINEGRAVEL, COMPACTED EARTH, ETC.)

• IRC SECTION P2604.3 – BACKFILLING SHALL BE FREE FROM DISCARDED CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL AND DEBRIS.

• IRC SECTION P2606.1 – SEALING OF ANNULAR SPACES – BOTH SIDES OF THE FOUNDATION WALL SHALL BE SEALED

WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS

IRC SECTION 2903.3 MINIMUM PRESSURE – THE STATIC WATER PRESSURE AT THE BUILDING ENTRANCE SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN 40 PSI

•PRESSURES IN EXCESS OF 80 PSI REQUIRE THE INSTALLATION OF A RPD

P2903.7 WATER-SERVICE MAINS SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN ¾ INCH DIAMETER.

VOLTAGE DROP

NEC 210.19(A) INFORMATION NOTE #4 CONDUCTORS FOR BRANCH CIRCUITS SHOULD BE SIZED TO PREVENT A VOLTAGE DROP 3% AND THE MAXIMUM VOLTAGE DROP ON BOTH FEEDERS AND BRANCH CIRCUITS DOES NOT EXCEED 5%.

(THE LENGTH OF THE CONDUCTORS SHALL BE FROM THE WELL PUMP ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE OCPD)

THE CONDUCTORS FROM THE PUMP CONTROLER SHALL ALSO BE THE SAME SIZE AS FROM THE WELL PUMP TO CONTROLER.

BE AWARE OF THE TYPE OF CB, EACH TYPE AND MANUFACTURE WILL HAVE INFORMATION ON THE MAXIMUM SIZE WIRE PERMITTED TO BE INSTALLED UNDER THE TERMINAL.

GROUNDING ELECTRODES

NEC 250.52(A)(1) – METAL UNDERGROUND WATER PIPE.

A METAL UNDERGROUND WATER PIPE IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE EARTH FOR 10 FT. OR MORE (INCLUDING ANY METAL WELL CASING BONDED TO THE PIPE SHALL BE BONDED

NEC 250.112(M) – METAL WELL CASINGSWHERE A SUBMERSIBLE PUMP IS USED IN A METAL WELL CASING, THE WELL CASING SHALL BE CONNECTED TO THE PUMP CIRCUIT EQUIPMENT GROUNDING CONDUCTOR

THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS ALSO REQUIRE GROUNDING TO THE WELL CASING AS PART OF THEIR LISTING.

WIRE SIZING

WHAT INFORMATION DOES THE BUILDING OFFICIAL NEED?

• HP OF THE WELL PUMP

• VOLTAGE OF THE WELL PUMP

• DEPTH THE WELL PUMP IS SET

• LENGTH OF WIRE FROM THE PUMP TO THE OCPD

• WIRING TYPE• SHALL BE LISTED FOR WET LOCATIONS (NEC

310.10(C))

• DIRECT-BURIAL CONDUCTORS SHALL BE EITHER UFTYPE OR USE TYPE, LISTED FOR DIRECT-BURIAL

• OTHER TYPES OF WIRING SHALL BE RUN IN A LISTED RACEWAY (WELL PIPE IS NOT A LISTED RACEWAY)

Wiring is type THW, which shall be run within a listed raceway, (well pipe is not a listed raceway)

NEC 300.5(G) Raceway seal. The end shall be sealed with an identified compound so as to prevent the entrance of moisture and gases

Water service pipe shall conform to NSF 61 with a working pressure of not less than 160 psi @ 73ºF (IRC P2905.4)

WHAT IF A GENERATOR IS PRESENT?

IF THE PUMP IS BEING LOWERED AND/OR A LARGE PUMP IS BEING INSTALLED AND THE STRUCTURE HAS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH ELECTRICAL LOAD CALCULATIONS WILL NEED TO BE PERFORMED PER NEC 702.4(B) FOR THE GENERATOR AND SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.

ISSUANCE OF A CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY

IRC SECTION P2901.1 – DWELLING UNITS SHALL BE SUPPLIED WITH POTABLE WATER IN THE AMOUNTS ANDPRESSURES SPECIFIED IN THIS CHAPTER.

GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP SYSTEM LOOP PIPING

IRC M2105.1 - THE ASSEMBLED LOOP SYSTEM SHALL BE PRESSURE TESTED WITH WATER AT 100 PSI FOR 30MINUTES WITH NO OBSERVED LEAKS BEFORE CONNECTION (HEADER) TRENCHES ARE BACKFILLED. FLOWRATES AND PRESSURE DROPS SHALL BE COMPARED TO CALCULATED VALUES. IF ACTUAL FLOW RATE ORPRESSURE DROP FIGURES DIFFER FROM CALCULATED VALUES BY MORE THAN 10%, THE PROBLEM SHALL BEIDENTIFIED AND CORRECTED.
