The Florida Marlins Community Foundation was established in 1999 and is a registered 501 (c) (3). A community foundation represents a large number of donors rather than one individual or a family. The purpose of this not-for-profit charitable organization as stated in its Articles of Incorporation, is to promote educational, athletic, health, social and community service programs with a particular focus on South Florida’s youth.

The following represents the 2008 Annual Report for the Florida Marlins Community Foundation. The FMCF operates on a calendar year. The report also details “corporate giving” by Florida Marlins, L.P., which follows a November 1 – October 31 fiscal year.

Dear Friends of the Florida Marlins Community Foundation: The Florida Marlins Community Foundation maintained its solid footing in the community during 2008. Despite the downturn of the economy, FMCF raised just over $800,000 and do-nated more than $450,000 to charitable projects. For the first time in its history, FMCF funded 100 grants reaching out to our neighbors in South Florida from the Atlantic to the Gulf and from Martin County to the Keys. We joined forces with a new partner, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida. To-gether we raised money and helped support good causes in our community. Our membership also enabled us to introduce one of South Florida’s largest employers to the Florida Marlins Community Foundation. The Community Corner had its best year to date with net revenue of over $43,500. This was not only due to a sponsorship by Broward Health but also to the creativity and direction of our Events Coordinator, Kelly Schnackenberg. On the Programs side, Jeremy Stern upgraded the way we interface our ongoing programs and special events with the Foundation’s website. Giving our fans the opportunity to participate in foundation programs electronically provides them with convenience and consequently helps FMCF to realize more participation. Finally, none of our success would be possible without the support of the leadership of the Florida Marlins including our owner, President, Executive Staff, employees along with our players and coaches. Our community is important to the franchise and the Florida Marlins Community Foundation is one way in which we bring baseball to those off the field.

Sincerely,

Nancy J. Olson Executive Director Florida Marlins Community Foundation

FMCF raises money for the Cornerstones for Kids programs...building a brighter future through education, the arts and baseball. The Florida Marlins Community Foundation provides monetary donations to deserving organizations within the South Florida community through two programs: Contributions and Grants.

GENERAL CONTRIBUTIONS

General contributions are listed on the Budget vs. Actual summary, listed under contributions. The total in this category was just over $295,000 and includes donations to specific nonprofit organizations. Significant examples include, but are not limited to the following:

Boys and Girls Clubs $ 36,700 Camillus House $ 10,000 Daily Bread Food Bank $10,000

GRANT PROGRAM

A formal grant program was established during the 2003 season and has expanded each year. Eligible non-profit organizations must e-mail [email protected] to request a grant application and instructions. The email address is available online at www.marlins.com and www.cornerstones4kids.com. A total of $100,000 in quarterly grants was awarded for education, the arts and baseball in 2008. A portion of the funding came from the players who made contributions through payroll deduction and general fundraising initiatives.

HOLIDAY GIVING

The Marlins give back during the holiday season through monetary contributions, in-kind donations and visits from Marlins players and other representatives. The Marlins season did not finish when the last out was made in September. Instead, the Marlins continued working throughout South Florida to help enhance the community in which it plays. During the month of December, the team participated in several activities in honor of the holiday season. This included a six-week Holiday Tour with 18 major events from November 8 -December 20.

RBI

Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI), presented by KPMG, is a youth program offering children ages 13-18, who live in disadvantaged areas, the opportunity to participate in organized baseball/softball. This program is designed to promote interest in baseball, academic achievement and social responsibility. The Marlins organize the RBI league and supply the uniforms, umpires and equipment for more than 350 children. The FMCF paid for all costs associated with the 2008 program thanks to the support of MLB, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, KPMG and Hanley Ramirez.

Adopt-A-Classroom matches businesses and individuals with inner-city schools. In 2008, FMCF donated $2,500 for Marlins employees to adopt five separate classrooms.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America is the official charity of Major League Baseball and the Florida Marlins.

Junior Achievement links the private sector with public schools focusing on dropout prevention, self-esteem and workforce readiness for the global marketplace of the 21st century. FMCF donated $5,000 to JA to provide all the necessary teaching tools and instructions.

Scholarships are funded by the FMCF to the University of Miami, St. Thomas University, Nova Southeastern University, Florida State League and the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

Teach For America brings outstanding recent college graduates to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. For the 4th year, the FMCF provided a $20,000 donation to Teach for America to sponsor four teachers in Miami.

Women of Tomorrow and FMCF have developed an exceptional connection with one another. Nancy Olson has mentored for 7 consecutive years, while Kelly Schnackenberg has participated in the program for 3 years. The Marlins hosted high school mentees on several occasions in 2008 to learn about various careers and how to “break into the game” later in life. FMCF also donated a $5,000 “Ladies Nite” scholarship to WOT.

The Marlins recognize the importance of player participation to support the Cornerstones for Kids programs and contribute to the South Florida community. Each year Marlins players enroll in payroll deduction to help support the Florida Marlins Community Foundation’s grant program. These funds help support educational, art and youth baseball/softball initiatives in South Florida. The combination of players’ monetary support and their presence helps raise additional funds for the Florida Marlins Community Foundation.

FLORIDA MARLINS, L.P. 2008 CORPORATE DONATIONS

The Florida Marlins Community Foundation (FMCF) became a separate department in the fall of 1999. Corporate donations were consolidated so the budget and approval processes were carried out by the FMCF. The budget is used to fund four areas: Dinners, Golf and Tennis Tournaments, Charitable Sponsorships, and Gifts outside the mission of the FMCF and the regulations of a 501 (c) (3). In other words, corporate donations come from the Florida Marlins, L.P. budget. A central budget for the Club along with checks and balances have helped control spending since this system was put in place. It enhances follow-up and communication both internally and externally.
