BUILDING A BETTER BOUNDARY

Message from the president. . . Helping the Boundary communities thrive has always been the backbone that motivates the Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities and this year has been no exception. The Board of Directors is very pleased to introduce Mona Mattei as our first part time Executive Director. We view her extensive background and education in marketing, communications and social development as a great fit for our future development as a maturing community foundation. Like all community foundations, last year was a year of recovery for the Phoenix Foundation. We’re pleased that our funds have become more buoyant again allowing us to be able to support needed projects throughout our region once again in 2010. The Vital Signs project was a large undertaking for our small foundation, but the information we gathered will guide our future decisions. In fact we provided a grant of $4,500 to the Ket-tle River Watershed planning process because of the high priority water was given in the Vital Signs report. In particular, I would like to recognize the Grand Forks District Credit Union as a major contributor to ongoing endowment building with a generous donation of $100,000 this year alone. They have been a great supporter of the work of the Phoenix Foundation from the beginning and together we can continue to achieve great things, far into the future, for the citizens of the Boundary. I would like to thank all members of the Board of Directors for their commitment and dedication to the important and volunteer work that they do for communities in the Boundary. I am please to present the 2010-2011 board, elected on September 8, 2010: Maxine Ruzicka, president, Leda Leander, vice-president, Becky Deane, secretary and Yshift fa-cilitator, Val Kelly, treasurer, Linda Manzon, grants committee chair, Roland Krueger, fund development chair, Marilyn Strukoff, Success by Six advisory, Darla Ashton, direc-tor-at-large, and Christine Thompson, City of Grand Forks liaison. Lastly, but most importantly, I wish to recognize those of you who work with us on advi-sory committees and as partner organizations that apply for grants and do such valuable work in our communities with such a small amount of funding. Together, we are Building a Better Boundary. Maxine Ruzicka

BUILDING A BETTER BOUNDARY Grant’s Committee Report

While 2009 was a year of recovery for the foundation in relation to the economic downturn, it was a year of hard work for directors of the foundation who undertook the VitalSigns project. VitalSigns allowed us to gather rich information from our Boundary citi-zens that will guide the work of the foundation for several years to come. In the fiscal year of 2009—2010 we made a decision not to award any grants in order to protect endowments. We were please that in the current year we were able to proceed with our normal granting cycle. For the 2010 granting session we chose to focus on three of the most urgent key areas identified through VitalSigns. Our request for proposals invited submissions to address the environment; health and welfare; and work. Ten thousand dollars was granted to eleven different agencies that submitted excellent proposals. In addition, because of the high priority that water was given in the VitalSigns report, the directors set aside five thousand dollars for two projects to work together on the Kettle River Watershed planning process and on gathering data on our water. Linda Manzon Chair, Grants Committee

GRANTS COMMITTEE REPORT

Granby Wilderness Society Co-ordinator Jenny Coleshill (R) explains one of the water tests to students from Grand Forks Senior Secondary class. They conducted the tests on water from the Kettle River near the Black Train Bridge in Grand Forks as a part of a larg-er project establishing a baseline for future water testing. The Phoenix Foundation provided funding to purchase the water testing kits.

Philanthropy isn’t just for the wealthy. People from all walks of life make gifts of every size to charitable organizations. No matter the amount of the gift, all donations are appreciated by the recipient organizations. Consider donations to charity as an alternative to gift-giving in honour of friends and family for their next special occa-sion.

If you’re not already working in the field, consid-er a career in the non-profit sector. There are many job search websites that list non-profit job opportunities.

Inform yourself about the community through media, research and by talking to people. Under-standing local issues and challenges, and talking about them, helps build awareness and support for organizations.

Purchase tickets to performances by local arts groups. Support organizations selling books, calendars or raffle tickets as fundraisers. Some organizations are membership based; consider joining one that means more to you.

Think about the time you have to give, skills you have to share, and what you want to achieve per-sonally and for the community. Then call your favourite charitable organization, local communi-ty club or school to find out if it could use a hand.

If you want to take a strategic approach to your philanthropy, consider: making a bequest in your will to a charity, or exploring gifts of life insur-ance, retirement funds and other options Contac t your financial planner or favourite charity for more information
