Prehistory In our region Abruzzo

The oldest archaeological finding is dated from about 350.000-400.000 years ago and consist of

flint tools, mainly large, two sided chipped stones. These items were discovered in the areas of

Madonna del Freddo and the Zannini Farm near our town Chieti and also in the hills along the coast

near Ortona and in an important settlements at the foot of the Maiella Mountain.

These findings indicate the haunts and movements of groups of huntsmen and fruitpicker, belonging to the species of Homo Erectus, the most ancient population of this territory, last present 200.000-

150.000 years ago. Hand-axe

Prehistory In our region Abruzzo

The culture of the Mid-Palaeolithic Age, began 150.000 years back

and spread up till 40.000 years ago, saw the appearance of some objects made by Neandertal Man.

From 40.000 to about 10.000 years ago, Homo Sapiens was present in

the area between Caramanico and Roccamorice, a strategic territory for hunting and extracting material.

Here, in the area occupied by the ancient Marrucino people, many important examples of rock paintings have

been discovered.Groups of humans and animal figures are represented together with typical geometric symbols (lines. circles,

squares)
