Comments From the President, continued

by Jeanine Cummins, President

New York City to Cuban and Mexican immigrants. Suero chronicled the lives of movie stars from 1962 to the mid-1980s. He began taking pictures when he was 14 years old when his father gave him a Kodak Jiffy camera. The photograph he prized the most was of Jacqueline Kennedy preparing for a dinner party lighting candles at the Kennedy home in Georgetown in 1954. Suero suffered from PTSD, so photography offered an escape; if he wasn’t working he would slip into a deep depression. In his book he wrote: “For me, my work was an escape from the war. It allowed me to detach from it because when you come back, the war doesn’t end for you. It stays with you for life for the most part. Photography was my solace.” Orlando Suero died on August 19 at the age of 94.

Robert Frank was born in Zṻrich, Switzerland November 1924; he was a European Jew growing up during the rise of Nazism. Frank was a photographer and documentary filmmaker, who understood oppression. He is best known for his book “The Americans” and considered to be one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. As an immigrant to this country he saw America with a different perspective. After immigrating to the

United States he worked as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar but eventually turned to photojournalism. He traveled the world and kept spiral notebooks of his work. He received a lot of criticism for his book but he felt that America was a lonely place because of the emphasis on being rich. His photographs placed emphasis on those often overlooked. “When people look at my pictures I want them to feel the way they do when they want to read a line of a poem twice.” Robert Frank died September 9, 2019 also at the age of 94.

Photo Talk Meeting - October 14We’ll be reviewing competition photos

by Bob Mathews, VP Photo Talk

There will be no presentation for the October Photo Talk, as I will be busy taking thousands of photos of Ireland, yes again. But if you happen to be in southwestern Ireland, stop by and join me for a pint of

Guinness and we can talk about photography.

As always, we will be reviewing the competition photos from the previous week’s competition.

November Competition JudgeMary Braman will judge our “Looking Up” competition on November 4

by Karen Ackermann, Competition Assistant

Please welcome Mary Braman, a Baltimore-based photographer who is on the steering committee of the Creative Exposure Baltimore meet-up, serves on the executive council of the Maryland Photography Alliance, and is certified by MPA’s Judges’ Certification Program. Mary has combined her passions for travel and photography to produce an amazing collection of images from around the world. She has been to six continents and shot in places such as South America, Japan, and Mongolia, as well as locally in places such as nearby Ellicott City. Her photographic style is simple and her post-production work is minimal—she follows the National Geographic Society’s mantra: Get it right in the camera.

In 2015 in Baltimore, she had a photography exhibit called “People and Places.” Check out some beautiful photos at www.marybrennan.smugmug.com/. The accompanying image was taken in Mongolia.

Competition CornerOctober, 2019

by Roz Kleffman, VP Competition

Welcome to the Competition Corner. Here you will find the upcoming results for the monthly B-CCC competitions. Monthly winners will be here and the collective points for that End of Year race too. The EOY points are always exciting to watch. It is much like a horse race with the winners fighting right down to the finish line. Points are given for first place (10); second place (8); third place (6); and honorable mentions (3). Just a reminder that you will receive one entry point for each image you submit too. Ideally, you can collect 6 entry points per month just by entering 2 images in each category. Novices, I would recommend you enter something. Sometimes, there are only 3 or 4 points that separate the EOY winners. Those could be your entry points. Rules are simple. Complete Competition Rules are on the webpage. Read them. Print them.

A few suggestions:1. Pay attention to the themes. Enter appropriate images.2. Get your digital images in the week before competition. Entries must be in the Tuesday prior to competition.3. Get your digital sizes correct. 1024 (Horizontal maximum) by 768 (vertical maximum).4. Get your prints mounted firmly with nothing on the back that could harm someone else’s work.5. Pay attention to what the judge says about your work. You do not have to agree with one judge but you may learn something.

How-To Meeting - October 28Hands-on Holiday Still Life Photography

by Stefan Kaben, VP How-To

Back by popular demand! We will reprise last April’s session, but with a twist. Let’s focus (pun intended) on the holidays: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hannukah, Christmas, New Years, whatever holiday you like.

A few of our club’s advanced photographers will once again bring their own materials to set up some holiday-themed stations for all to share, and one or two other stations will also be available to set up your own tasteful compositions. If all goes well, you might even come away with an image suitable for your own holiday greeting cards! At the least, it will be some additional experience prior to our December competition, which

just so happens to be . . . Still Life!

So bring your camera! Bring some props! Bring a light or two! Bring a background cloth! Bring a tripod, if you have one! Most of all, bring your imagination!

Program Meeting - October 21Bob Paulding - Abstracts: Patterns and Details

by Catherine Sheppard, VP Programs

October’s speaker will be Bob Paulding, a local photographer known for imaginative images that cover a wide range of subject matter – parks, flowers, architecture, and even his own back yard. Paulding will be sharing his unique interpretation of nature’s beauty with the club. Sometimes he captures images in a straightforward manner, other times he veers to abstraction or makes deliberate movement with his camera to bring mystery to the image.

Paulding also has a strong interest in vintage automobiles and will show some of his photos of this particular subject matter. He is known for his capture of the style of various vintage cars, using interesting angles that bring out the beauty and style of these machines and their parts. Paulding has, in fact,

published a book of his work on vintage automobiles entitled, “The Art of the Car.”

Paulding purchased his first camera for a college arts class in 1973. However, it wasn’t until 1998 that he began shooting again and ultimately turned this passion into a business. Still, he continues to learn and attends photo workshops on a yearly basis. He has studied under such notable photographers as John Shaw, David Middleton, Cliff Zenor, David Muench and Scott Rouse.

Our October Speaker’s body of work can be seen on line at:

October Field TripWe’ll trek off to West Virginia for a steam railroad trip on October 19

by Vincent Ferrari, Field Trip Leader

Bowie-Crofton Camera Club will be traveling to West Virginia for an overnight field trip on the weekend of October 19. Our objective is the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad’s “Durbin Rocket”, which we will catch in the town of Durbin, West Virginia. The “Rocket” is powered by the unique Heisler No. 6 locomotive, which is a coal-fired steam engine with ties to West Virginia’s historic rail and logging industry. We will ride in authentic 1920’s-era coaches followed by vintage wooden cabooses behind Heisler No. 6 as she steams along the free-flowing Greenbrier River in northern Pocahontas County. The ride covers 10.5 miles in two hours and offers many beautiful river and mountain views in the Monongahela National Forest. And since it will be October, we should be treated to beautiful autum colors along the way. An open car directly behind the steam engine offers ample opportunities to see coal being shoveled into the tender and watch as she takes in water at a watering hole along the way.

Our plan is to get to Elkins, W. Va. on Friday evening.

I am recommending that we stay at the Super 8 by Wyndham Elkins on Friday night. On Saturday morning, we’ll take the approx. one-hour drive to Durbin, where we will catch the train at 10:00 a.m. After our ride, we’ll find a good lunch spot, and then the rest of the day and weekend is on your own. There are many, many other photo opportunities in the hills of West Virginia, so plan accordingly.

Because this trip will take place during the height of the fall foliage season, it is highly recommended that you reserve your train ticket and your hotel room now. Here are the links:

November Field Trip - November 2Spocott Windmill & Village, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge

by Bill Collins, Field Trip Leader

The three destinations for this field trip are all located in the Cambridge, Maryland vicinity. The Spocott Windmill and Village is located at 1663 Hudson Road, Cambridge, Maryland. With a step back to the 1800s, the site features Maryland’s only post-style windmill (notable for the way the entire structure can be rotated into the wind). Other buildings include a one-room schoolhouse, country store, mall home, and doctor’s office. The grounds and several of the buildings are open dawn to dusk daily for self-guided tours. The mill contains the original grinding stones and interior steps.

The Tubman Visitor Center, located at 4068 Golden Hill Road, Church Creek, Maryland, is just to the east of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. It is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and admission is free. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center is located amid the landscapes where Tubman lived and toiled. The unspoiled scenes in the area look much

as they would have in Tubman’s time. The Tubman Visitor Center features 10,000 square feet of engaging, enlightening multimedia exhibits about her life. It’s a great stop itself and a great launching point for exploring the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, a scenic, self-guided driving tour that includes 36 sites related to Tubman and the Underground Railroad on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, with more sites in Delaware leading to Philadelphia.

The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday for an educational visit and small store. The Wildlife Drive and outdoor facilities are open daily, dawn to dusk. A daily permit is required for visitors to the Wildlife Drive. It may be possible to see many kinds of waterfowl as well as Bald Eagles. In the past, the club has stayed here for colorful sunsets.

Parting Shot

This month’s Parting Shot is from Steve Bruza. If you would like your image and story presented here, send it to:

[email protected].

At one of the largest antique and custom car shows in Florida, I found many people like this group wearing homemade sandwich boards plastered with photos and information about their cars for sale. I spoke with a few of them about this approach and all said it was very a effective way to engage with potential buyers, particularly at a venue like a car show with hundreds of attendees. Hey look ... a Rolls Royce, only $16,900.00 !
