In this edition, we will continue to feature articles and information to provide food for thought and general reading, as well as updates from the World Budgerigar Organisation (WBO), and BCV president, Col Flanagan and secretary, James Smith.

On the WBO front in 2019, we saw the introduction of the WBO Colour Standard for the Melanistic Spangle. In this edition will feature the new Standard and an article from WBO secretary, Ghalib Al-Nasser about the role and formation of the organisation.

Thank you to Vic Murray for providing an account of Vanessa White and Adam May’s visit to the aviaries of Daniel Lutolf in Switzerland, and Ghalib and Janice Al-Nasser, world renowned breeders and international judges based in the UK. The trip on all accounts appears to have been an extraordinary experience and a testament to the passion and curiosity of Adam and Vanessa.

We continue with our club and member profiles and will take a look the Melton and District Budgerigar Society and our member profile will focus on Mim and Rohan McQualter from Nepean and the coming together of a lover of pet budgies and an exhibition breeder.

Lastly, thank you to clubs and members who have provided positive feedback for the previous printed edition of Budgie News and we hope you find our latest edition a useful read.

At a recent Judges meeting there were two new candidates tested who subsequently passed the test and have been placed onto the aspiring judges’ panel, that makes three recent additions to the aspiring judges’ panel, they are Peter Smith, Ray Slade and Hendra Kamel. Congratulations to these three gentlemen and on behalf of all members I would like to welcome them and wish them all the best for the future.

I am pleased to report that Council is making great progress on the preparations for the 2020 ANBC National Show which will be held in Bendigo, the venue Ulumbarra (the old gaol) has been booked and offers a magnificent auditorium and surrounds which promise to support the weekend, offering an array of facilities to construct a truly great show. The surrounding district has a terrific offering of tours and day time events for those who choose to extend their stay.

While Council has all of the regular day to day housekeeping to maintain, we have also been blocking out time each meeting to work on and executing the marketing plan, essentially the plan aims is to increase membership and retain a greater percentage. To date the plan has identified a number of specific opportunities that require a fair degree of planning and work, building greater awareness of the BCV, developing a BCV trade stand representing the breed and all clubs, and the targeting of rural agricultural shows and urban pet expos.

Importantly, supporting documents need to be developed to support club activities and new mentoring programs.

As the young bird championship show approaches, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all the clubs, teams and members all the best. It is a difficult year as the drought has delayed autumn rains and consequently birds are missing many feathers. I am hopeful that in spite of this situation we can take a winning team up to the National show in Brisbane in late May. I look forward to seeing many Victorians up there to witness the highest standard of exhibition budgerigars in Australia.

Hello Members!

We are about to enter into the busiest period of the year – the Young Bird State Championship Show at Carwatha College and the ANBC Show being held in Brisbane this year. I would like to wish every member showing at this time every success over the coming weekends.

For any members that are travelling to Brisbane, I hope you have a fantastic time – every National Show is unique based on the host zones running of the event. The fantastic thing is being able to go and experience other parts of this great country and mix with other like-minded keepers, breeders and showers of the wonderful bird we all love so much!

Next year sees the Budgerigar Council of Victoria host the ANBC Show in Bendigo – a fantastic regional venue has been selected and those attending the ANBC Show in Brisbane will see a fantastic presentation of the venue as well as some fantastic promotional video and photos of the City of Greater Bendigo and surrounds. The details of the Show will be circulated to all members and all zones in very quick succession after the ANBC Show.

Could I please draw everyone’s attention to a little update on protocol and expectations at our Club Championship Shows and State Shows?

At a recent Judges meeting it was communicated that all too often judges hear exhibitors pointing out their birds to other people prior to the conclusion of judging. Should this occur during judging the bird in question can be disqualified from the event by the officiating Judge. You may think you are whispering – however the “stage whisper” is often louder than you realize. Please take note of this important piece of etiquette – you may only be disadvantaging yourself.

There was also a discussion around Club Championship Shows and clubs not

understanding the Protocol required for the finals judging. This detail can be found on the BCV Website at www.bcv.asn.au. For every Show this execution should be adhered to – there are show rules for a reason.

The BCV would like to congratulate three new aspiring judges who have passed their tests at the recent judges meeting. Peter Smith, Hedra Kamel and Ray Slade - well done to you on achieving this great result.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone success for their breeding seasons – many people pair up on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend to ensure they have youngsters ready for the UBC Show. I hope your nests are full of fertile eggs, healthy chicks and super youngsters!

Secretary’s Report


The cancellation of the 2019 BCV Adult Bird Championship Show was made to minimize any discomfort and stress for birds and breeders. The call was made early based on the extreme weather forecasts leading up to and predictions for the day of the show. Col Flanagan, BCV President states, “First and foremost, the welfare of the birds must be of the highest priority.” The decision was correct, as the temperatures across Victoria would have meant extreme heat conditions, especially for breeders in rural and regional Victoria.

The History of the BCV - Budgerigar Council of Victoria talks about the origins of the heat clause, “The Show season [2009] started with a bang as did the weather. Hot was an understatement. This forced a Heat Clause to be written as law and to be abided by to the letter of the law.” This was a hot year and saw the horrific Black Saturday Fires sweep across Victoria.

“The B.C.V’s heat clause now has the power to not award a Diploma Certificate or any Exhibitor Status points if a Show is held in temperatures exceeding 35 degrees. There is also a discretionary clause that if the temperature exceeds 35 degrees but is forecast less no penalty will apply. After all the birds are quite valuable so why would anyone willingly risk them for a few points. Also the R.S.P.C.A. accepted the clause 100%.

The bush-fire season was horrific so the B.C.V. Council on everyone’s behalf donated $5,000.00 to the bush-fire relief fund.”

Once there click on “BCV Show Rules” and it will open up. It is on Page 2 and reads:

HEAT CLAUSEIt is directed that all clubs abide by the following Heat Clause as introduced by the BCV with the Animal Welfare guidelines in mind;

1. If the weather forecast on the 7pm ABC Nightly News on the night before any scheduled show is for 35 degrees or more for the locality of the show, NO Diploma and NO Exhibitor Points will be available or awarded.

2. Should the temperature forecast on the 7pm ABC Nightly News for the locality of the show be for less than 35 degrees, but on the day of the show exceeds 35 degrees then no penalty will apply.

3. Clubs cancelling their show shall be given the option of re-scheduling the show on any available, suitable and approved date in that same year.

4. In the event of cancellation of the show, the club secretary must notify the BCV secretary, all club secretaries and the BCV Facebook page at their earliest opportunity.

The question is often asked “What are the aims of the World Budgerigar Organisation (WBO) and the benefits to its affiliated member countries?” I hope in this article that I can outline the aims, benefits and achievements of the WBO in its short history since itsfoundation in 1994.

The aims of the WBO are as laid down in its Constitution which can be found on its website (www.world-budgerigar.org) and can be summarised as:

(i)To bring together representatives of member countries.

(ii)To serve as a unified international advisoryorganisation in promoting common standards for the budgerigar fancy throughout the world.

(iii)To supportand encourage the free movement of budgerigar breeders and budgerigars across international borders in order to improve the breeding, exhibiting and judging of budgerigars.

(iv)To assist in the protection of the interests of members of the organisation.

(v)To assist in the progress of scientific knowledge by the accumulation of data and literature and the distribution thereof amongst members of the organisation.

(vi)To reward any work of outstanding merit with prizes or other marks of recognition.

To highlight the benefits of the WBO I need to give a comprehensive history and background to the formation of the WBO.

BACKGROUNDInitially it was the Budgerigar Society (B.S.) of Great Britain that played the major part

in the formation of the World Budgerigar Organisation (WBO). It was as early as 1975, at the B.S.Convention in Harrogate, when the International guests asked the B.S.to take the lead in forming an international organisation; againin 1985 at the B.S. Convention the then B.S. Chairman, Arthur Bracey, mooted the idea of an international organisation. However, the seed was finally sown at the 1990 B.S. Convention when, at the International session represented by Gerd Bleicher (Germany), Dave Marquart (Canada), Joe Sabella (USA), and the late Borg Stenstrup (Denmark), the B.S. was asked to take the lead in forming a World Association for the exchange of opinions, ideas, and ultimately, standards. This desire was based on the need for closer co-operation between countries due to the greater movement of birds and exchange of judges. Overseas fanciers generally looked to the B.S. for a lead due to the fact that the B.S. has been established since 1925. This was answered when the General Council of the B.S. agreed to set up meetings of international representatives. As Chairman of the B.S. at the time, Roger Carr asked a fellow councillor, Geoff Bostock, to organise the first International Delegates Meeting. This was held in November 1992 in Doncaster, England, to coincide with the B.S. Club Show. Delegates from 15 countries attended and it was agreed that the International Organisation would be formed and would operate in an Advisory Role so that the integrity and independence of each member society would remain unharmed. The B.S.sponsored this meeting and paid the participants a part of their travelling costs.

Objectives, aims and priorities were set with issues such as the Ideal Budgerigar, Colour Standards, Show Cage, Research, Ring Colours, Structure of the Organisation, International Judges Panel, Judges Training, Anti Bird Keeping Lobby and many others were discussed and carried forward to the next meeting. This

World Budgerigar Organistion


World Budgerigar Organistion was arranged for November 1993 at Doncaster, again to coincide with the B.S. Club Show. It was agreed that the official language would be English. At the second meeting in November 1993, delegates from 14 countries attended and the items discussed at the first meeting were again discussed and received backing from the organisations that the delegates represented. At that meeting the historical decision was taken that resulted in the formation of the World Budgerigar Organisation (WBO) with effect from 1st April 1994. A draft constitution was agreed upon with voting powers depending on the size of the society. Roger Carr was elected Chairman and Geoff Bostock Secretary/Treasurer. The first official meeting of the WBO was organised in August 1994 at Karlsruhe, Germany to coincide with the European Championship Show. At the start of the WBO in 1994 there were 19 member countries that affiliated to the WBO. In April 1997 Ghalib Al-Nasser took over the role of Secretary/Treasurer and after 12 years in office Roger Carr retired from the position of Chairman and in April 2006 Gerd Bleicher (Germany) took over that post. Very few changes in officials since the formation indicate the stability of the organisation.Now, in 2011there are 40 national societies representing 30 countries in the 6 continents that are affiliated to the WBO. They are: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada,Czech Republic, Denmark, Eire, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Slovensko, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom,USAand Venezuela. Each society is entitled to have 2 delegates to attend meetings who are the contact with that country/society as well as the secretary of that national society. The WBO meets once a year either in mainland Europe or Great Britain. However, in 2005 the meeting was held in the USA (Las Vegas) and in 2011 the meeting was held in Australia (Canberra). This is to demonstrate that the organisation is truly international. The decision where meetings are held is taken by the delegates at their annual meetings. It was agreed from the outset that all decisions taken by the General Council of the WBO would have to be ratified by member countries prior to them becoming

official WBO policy. Each action taken by the delegates at a meeting will have to go back to each individual country/society for debate by their committees and will be brought back again at the following meeting. This ensures that every action taken is fully endorsed by societies and not by their delegates only. After all, the delegates only act as ambassadors for their countries, just like the United Nations. It was also envisaged that not all decisions reached by the WBO could be adopted by member countries. However, for an organisation in its infancy, the progress has been much greater than ever envisaged when considering an international body which meets, at most, once a year and considering all the difficulties of different languages and the time taken for interpretation during the meeting. The friendship and agreement between the delegates has been nothing short of astonishing and co-operation between member countries continues to flourish because of the will of delegates and their countries for the international organisation to succeed.

One of the most important achievement is working closely with the world legislative mixed variety organisation, Confederation Ornithologique Mondiale (COM),who has fully adopted our Colour Standards, Pictorial Ideal & Ring Colour Sequence in 2009.


This was only achieved by the close liaison of certain delegates and officials who work within both organisations. The COM World Show staged each year in a different country towards the end of January attracts an entry exceeding 20,000 birds of all types.

Some of the WBO achievements so far can be summarised as follows:

• Formulated a Constitution

• Formulated a 40-page Colour Standardsfor all world-wide recognised varieties

• Issued a Scale of Points for Budgerigars

• Issued Guidelines for Judges and Exhibitors

• Formulated the Standard of Perfection for Budgerigars

• Published the International WBO Pictorial Ideal in 2008

• Formulated an International Judges Panel

• Developed an International Show Cage with technical drawings and specifications

• Issue four rosettes every year for National shows to each member country/society

• Formulated an international Ring Colour Sequence and Specification

• Formulated a Colour Guide for Rings and Budgerigars using the Pantone Colour Codes

• Obtain and circulate Research articles from International Avian Vets & Scientists to member countries

• Created the WBO Gould Award commencing in 2011to be awarded for Meritorious Services to the World of Budgerigars.

At each meeting of the WBO there is a wonderful exchange of ideas whereby bestpractice, judging methods, how to become a judge, problem areas, ideas that are successful in other countries are discussed for member countries to pick up and implement if they so wish.

To run an organisation like the WBO it is understandable that the matter of costs has to be discussed. So the basics of financial regulations are laid down in the WBO rules. To understand the base of finances see the following part from the WBO Constitution.

10. FINANCES (v) Each member of the Organisation will be responsible for the expenses of its delegates.

(vi) The Organisation will be responsible for the cost of meeting rooms, light refreshments, administrative and, secretarial expenses including essential interpreting costs.

(vii)The Organisation will pay the traveland accommodationcosts incurred by the Chairman and the Secretary/Treasurer in the execution of their duties.

(viii) The Organisation will pay the accommodation cost incurred by the Vice Chairman and immediate past Chairman in attending General Council meetings.

I hope that this will give a better understanding of the function of the WBO and illustrate the benefits of organisations to be part of the parent body.

World Budgerigar Organistion NEW MELANISTIC SPANGLE STANDARD - WBO COLOUR STANDARD FOR THE MELANISTIC SPANGLE - 2019

MELANISTIC SPANGLE LIGHT GREEN

General body colour: rump, breast and under parts light green of an even depth of colour throughout.

Mask: buttercup yellow, ornamented by six evenly spaced large round black throat spots, the outer two being partially covered by the base of the check patches. Any yellow colour feathers in the spots is a fault. The buttercup yellow of the mask extending over the frontal and crown, to merge with the black undulations at the back of the head. The frontal and crown should be clear and free from all markings.

Markings: on cheeks, back of head and neck; black with a well-defined buttercup yellow edge. All markings should be free from any intrusion of body colour. Wings are yellow with a line of black appearing 2-3 mm from the edge of every feather.

Cere: blue in cocks, brown in hens.

Eyes: black with a white iris.

Cheek patches: violet.

Primary wing flights: yellow with a black line

close to the edge of every feather.

Primary tail feathers: yellow or yellow edged with

black. The shaft of the tail feather to be black.

Feet and legs: blue/grey

“Star struck” is the description of the aviary visits for these beginners.

At the March 2018 United Budgerigar Society, A.G.M. two members were invited to talk and discuss, how our birds really compare to what’s happening overseas, and what are they doing differently to us?

Vanessa White, a beginner member of the club gave a terrific presentation.

In June 2017 on her way back from working in Iceland for a month, Vanessa travelled to the U.K., where she visited the aviaries of Ghalib and Janice Al-Nasser, world renowned breeders and international judges. Ghalib is also secretary of the World Budgerigar Organisation.

She then went to Germany where she met up with her husband Adam May, and they were then able to travel to Switzerland and have an aviary visit to world famous breeder, Daniel Lutolf.

As beginners, their questioning of these breeders provided another perspective on the differences in the hobby.

Aviary visit June 2017Ghalib and Janice live in beautiful countryside in Sudbury, North East from London between Cambridge and Ipswich, about an hour on the train from London.

Ghalib kindly picked Vanessa up from the train station. On arrival at their home they chattered over a cup of tea and they talked about

Ghalib’s involvement as secretary of the World Budgerigar Association, their recent trip to Australia and judging at the ANBC Nationals.

At this point Vanessa says she was “feeling a bit over whelmed”.

Because Ghalib had a cold, Janice showed Vanessa the aviary and their birds.

Their aviary and bird room were light filled and airy. The main aviary had an outdoor section that the birds could enter through windows as they liked during Summer. The long wall of the room had breeding cabinets.

had finished breeding the cocks and hens were separated into different aviaries. The other two aviaries were for young birds and Miniature Budgies.

Vanessa explained that her visit focused on the young birds. Janice would ask her to select birds to look at and place them in show cages.

She selected a few Grey Opalines with large shoulders. Janice was very kind and said she was picking some nice birds, thus putting Vanessa at ease.

They examined their siblings, parents, grandparents, and a few generations of birds. This provided and excellent example of how the birds develop over the generations (at home Adam and Vanessa had only bred one round of birds at this stage).

Then Ghalib joined them and they looked at big blue normals. Again, they were impressed by the shoulder size of these birds. Janice mentioned, “you need big shoulders to have a large head”.

Janice had a lovely easy-going manner that really put Vanessa at ease. She got to handle a few of the birds and found most of the birds were incredibly friendly and not nervous of being handled.

When asking about managing sick birds and putting down sick birds she was interested and surprised to find out that their philosophy is to let nature take its course, and they don’t put their sick birds down. This is an interesting position to take, and maybe not a common one. Ghalib even said he makes life, he doesn’t take it away.

Vanessa said and emphasised “It was really inspiring to meet a woman in the hobby who is a judge and who also has a couple of things in common”. Both are in partnership with our husbands, enjoy gardening, growing veggies and both enjoyed the nutrition aspect of the hobby. Both were making similar foods for the birds but in addition the use of bird supplement, mint (the herb), yeast, egg and biscuit pigeon food.

Vanessa discovered that groats means, oats without the husk on. Al Nasser’s feed their birds’ groats and oats, soak seed in Melaleuca honey. They also make soft food at a much drier consistency than Vanessa had been doing.

Janice cooked a delicious quiche for lunch and they “talked and talked”, Ghalib was not shy in discussing his frustration with trying to make better birds.

Vanessa said, “I could see that it was an ongoing learning process and a challenge all the way from being a beginner to champion breeder. I was surprised and also felt reassured”.

Ghalib’s Lacewing advice was, put them to normals. Normal hens to split lacewings for size, dark factors and greys to help with the colour. One of Vanessa’s regular questions, as she and Adam are trying to specialise in this variety.

Janice drove her back to the station, and on the way discussed how much she loved her trip to Australia. Vanessa said, “I really felt a connection with Janice”.

‘The final reason for partnership is when two established successful fanciers become entangled and set up home and bird room together! This is where the fun really starts; particularly if they are each quite assertive and have their own ideas on every aspect of the hobby, and those ideas on almost everything are at variance with one another! Perhaps this is the most challenging partnership of all!’

Daniel LutolfVanessa and Adam were staying with friends in Germany who lived 20 minutes from Daniel Lutolf’s home, aviaries and breeding set up.

Having emailed from Australia but with no response, they called Daniel when they got to Germany, and after a bit of phone tag were able to make an appointment to visit his aviary with the assistance of the German speaking friends they were staying with.

Würenlos, Switzerland. Hot day - Mid 30’s. They took a bottle of wine for a gift.

Daniel’s bird room is an extension on the side of his house, with a downstairs section with a couple more aviaries. It a great set up with excellent ventilation, shutters that open to fresh air down half one side of the upstairs and fitted with an air extractor downstairs.

It was 10am in the morning and Daniel was mixing his soft food and checking all the nest boxes.

Wet/soft food:Vanessa questioned his use of broccoli, thinking it was bad for their stomach, he said in small amounts it is good. He was very keen on using fish meal and kept emphasising the use of this product to provide Omega 3 and protein for the birds. Also, a seed called Foniopaddy (Avian Vitality sell it as Africana Seed) I think it is for Coccidiosis prevention and placed in separate containers for all his breeding pairs.

Adam took photos while Vanessa followed Daniel around cleaning out the nest boxes and spotted all the chicks.

Chicks:He opened 9-12 doors into the nest boxes at a time. Pulled the boxes out and examined every chick and threw out any soiled material. He uses hemp in the nest boxes which according to Daniel is 5-6 times more absorbent than wood shavings,.

There were heaps of chicks and eggs in every nest: 5-6 eggs and 4-6 chicks.

He also had a cage with 5 birds, 3 cocks and 2 hens. He had birds selecting their own partners.

In every nest box he would say here’s a super chick and point them out, allowing Vanessa to pick them up.

He was particularly responsive to birds and chicks making strange or loud noises (upset). He would check them straight away. One of the chicks that made a lot of noise he seemed very suspicious and thought that something maybe wrong with it.

Showing them the droppings in the nest that were pale in colour and flat spirals, he said this was a great sign of a super chick. When he found these droppings, he would put them into some of the other nest boxes for good bacteria. We saw only one box with wet nest that he changed containers and bedding straight away.

Breeding:He mixes the colour of his birds when breeding Green x Blue. Small hen with large male bird. He used old birds 6 years old and very young 5-6 months. Old with young combinations.

Two things stood out to Vanessa and Adam, the large size of his birds’ feet and the softness of the feathers.

Single birds:He selected a few birds from the flights for a closer look. He said, “you know I really like the bird’s personality, they have a great personality”. This was unexpected and made Vanessa smile, that the pleasure even after 30 year of breeding budgies and it wasn’t just about being a success, it was actually about the bird, not even the way the bird looked but how the birds are.

His birds are very calm and tame. He was able to handle them easily, leave nest boxes open without them flying out, put them in the photo box, and they would just sit there.

The cock birds had massive throws, that were quite dense with feathers. The hens didn’t have throws as much but a lot of directional feathering. His birds were incredibly calm and knew him, but the aviary was full of noise.

Daniel was very friendly, welcoming and generous with his time and sharing his knowledge with Vanessa and Adam.

Vanessa and Adam discovered Daniel really has a passion for the birds beyond his success.

How inspiring said Vanessa.

They were supposed to leave at 12 noon when his daughter got home, but he invited them to stay longer if they liked. Daniel invited them to come back another time.

In Vanessa’s words:

“So that will have to wait for another time. Hopefully by then we will have a lot more and better questions to ask him about budgies rather than being so star struck”.

Melton and District Budgerigar Society boasts an enviable membership of Champion Breeders, Victorian and National Judges and an ANBC hall of fame legend. It also has a healthy grassroots club culture where beginners can learn from some of the best in Australia including club stalwarts Ian Hunter and Pat Vella.

In 1993 the Melton & District Budgerigar Society Inc. was formed after the Kensington/ Brunswick Budgerigar Society changed its name and relocated to Melton. Since then the club has been focused on promoting the hobby in the outer Western Suburbs of Melbourne.

In 2009 Melton was the first club since the inception of the Adult Bird Shield Show in 1997 to win the shield other than United. A fine result and a demonstration of a club improving the quality of its birds. In 2014, Melton member Peter Thurn was inducted into the ANBC Hall of Fame after seven National wins.

The growth and success of the club has built its reputation as a hotspot for the hobby not only in Victoria but across Australia.

The club’s Championship and UBC Show and auction are considered some of the most prestigious in Victoria. The Melton Blue Ribbon Auction provides a unique opportunity for the beginner through to the champion to purchase birds and improve their breeding program. A testament to quality and reputation of Melton’s annual auction is evidenced in Australia’s best breeders offering birds for sale.

Melton’s commitment to the hobby is impressive but what makes this club really stand out is a genuine commitment to the broader community. In 2009 after the horrific Black Saturday fires the Melton Club raised funds and donated $600.00 in support of communities in need. Most recently off her own bat, club secretary Amanda Fonti lead the charge to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital, Good Friday Appeal.

Today the club continues to support all levels of enthusiasts from beginners to champion breeders. The club meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Rockbank Community Hall, Leakes Road, Rockbank at 8.00pm. Peter Thurn’s 2017 Adult Shield Grand Champion


Mim & Rohan McQualterMim and Rohan are passionate about their birds. The interesting thing about this partnership is they have come into the hobby from two different ends of the budgie spectrum.

Pet budgies and Exhibition birdsMim has kept budgies as pets. Rohan from the age of 13 was a member of the Wangaratta Caged Bird and Budgerigar Society in the late 70’s. He competed as a junior and quickly moved up to novice before reaching an age where football and other interests took over.

Today they have formed a partnership and have been breeding now for 4 years.

Mim tells us, “We’ve been together 10 years and we took the plunge on Rohan’s 50th birthday. He came home with 10 birds and the numbers were growing. I wasn’t sure

where they were all coming from?”

Would you recommend pet owners taking the leap into exhibition budgerigars?Mim’s answer is a resounding “Yes!”, but you have to have the time she tells us, “You have to spend time with the birds. It’s really rewarding, and the birds have so much to offer. I have learnt how to treat sick birds, hand feeding chicks and then the breeding program.” Mim’s experience and journey into the hobby provides valuable insights into where the exhibition breeders of tomorrow may come from.

Back in the hobbyRohan tells us he has seen some big changes since getting back into the hobby, “The birds are bigger, they seem twice the size as they used to be. I think they are more finicky, and I find the colours are not as vibrant.”

Overcoming obstaclesA year or so back they had two breeding seasons with 20 breeding cages and only bred 14 birds. It was very disappointing. Last year we started breeding in January and they went berserk. We breed up to 150 birds that year and have rung 50 so far this year.

So, what made the difference? From 20 breeding cages and producing 14 chicks to a lift in productivity and breeding 150 last year.

Rohan was clear that he became wary of pulling in a lot of birds from a lot of different breeders. He also said that buying older birds can be a problem because he believes they need to get used to a new routine and a new feeding program. Rohan tells us, “If you have a lot of birds used to a lot of different routines, it can equal disaster.”

Rohan believes, the older the bird the longer it takes to adapt to a new routine. So, he bought young birds off Brian Reynolds.

“They were young and as a result bred well.” The birds need to get used to your routine. Rohan would recommend to beginner breeders to buy young birds that will quickly learn how you operate. “They get to know you and your ways. They get to know you and what you do.” Mim adds, “They get to know you and they get excited when they see you. They know when they will get spinach out of the garden.”

Advice: Buy the youngest birds you can. Even if they are UBC and take the gamble. They can adapt to your home and your husbandry.

Bouncing back.Mim and Rohan are aware of the disappointment associated with breeding exhibition budgerigars. “You go through the disappointment. You’ll find your best bird dead or a productive hen that has just died after producing a good nest.” They remind us of the importance of a strong network in the hobby and a couple of key areas to reminder during the tough times:

1. Get support from fellow breeders.

2. The club environment is important. It helps you get through the tough times.

Mim tells, us “Rohan is in constant contact with members between meetings.” Rohan’s mentor, Geoff Clarke in the old Wangaratta days has recently got back into the hobby.

More than a ribbonMim tells us, “As great as it is seeing where you come on the show bench it is more important to enjoy the hobby.”

Mim and Rohan believe it’s not about having the money to buy the best bird but about learning the process of breeding and animal husbandry. “You do need to have good birds later on, but initially learn about the fancy.”

The partnership is built on a strong foundation where the enjoyment and learning are just as important, if not more so than being obsessed with the results of a Championship show.

They offer a refreshing take on a big criticism around the expense of breeding. Rohan is clear, “If you spend $1000 on birds and take them as far as you can go then use that $1000 to buy a good cock bird. You don’t need to rush in and spend big money.”

Advice:1. Keep it simple

2. Keep expenses down

3. Build stock up with what you have

4. When you can’t take it further buy in some more expensive birds

5. Be patience, listen and learn.

When John Gould published The Birds of Australia in 1848 his description of the budgerigar or the warbling grass parakeet as it was known, was as fitting then, as it is today. Gould wrote, “this lovely little bird is preeminent both for beauty of plumage and elegance of form, which, together with its extreme cheerfulness of disposition and sprightliness of manner, render it an especial favourite with all who have had an opportunity of seeing it alive.”

The pictures that accompanied Gould’s edition sparked the imagination of bird lovers around the world but the picture being painted was not telling the whole story. The truth was Gould was not a great illustrator, but his wife Elizabeth was, and while John Gould has been credited with the illustrations, it is to his wife that the accolades should flow. The image opposite is an example of Elizabeth’s work depicting the budgerigar in its wild form from the 1848 edition. But this was not the first time the budgerigar had been captured on paper.

While the aboriginal community have been aware of the budgerigar for thousands of years the first European description has been credited 43 years before the Gould’s illustration and description to George Shaw in

1805. Shaw’s description and illustration are featured in his publication, Vivarium naturae or The Naturalists’ miscellany and was illustrated by Fred Nodder, an English natural history artist. Nodder is also known for his work on Joseph Banks publication Florilegium depicting botanical specimens collected on James Cook’s first voyage.

While the 1805 and 1848 depictions may not resemble accurately the ratios of the standard of today, they were the first attempts to capture this delightful bird on paper.

In modern times with the increase in the number of varieties and an improvement in the look of the modern standard, illustrative depictions of the exhibition budgerigar have evolved. These depictions required more accurate dimensions to guide the modern breeder towards the standard on the show bench. In 2000, the current ANBC standard was revised. In the History of the Budgerigar Council of Victoria we are told, “Two paintings have been done by the noted English artist Roy Aplin as a start to a new pictorial view of the bird required. There will be seven paintings produced in all. Extra paintings showing bust form and a full side view.”

A Splash of Colour


Depictions of the budgerigar do not stop at the early illustrations of naturalists or the accurate representation of the Standard. Australian artists like Rose Rafferty and Trish Kelly have painted many of the varieties that appear as prizes in some of our club Championship shows across the state. Examples can be seen below.

Another avenue for the depiction of the

budgerigar are the logo’s that represent our states, regions, local clubs and the ANBC.
