No. 765 STEAM LOCOMOTIVE ZOOMS
THROUGH BUCK CREEK
Only a few steam locomotives still operate in the United States, and anyone
near the tracks in Buck Creek on the sunny Tuesday afternoon of September
11, 2012, got a glimpse of one of them as it sped through Buck Creek around
2:36pm. Once seen traveling all across the country, locomotives like the 765
were a common site, but are now a rare relic of the past. Less than a dozen are
still in operation.
Pictured above, the 765 was built in 1944 by the Lima Locomotive Works.
After being saved from the scrap heap, The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical
Society helped make it operational in the 1970s. The engine was completely
rebuilt in the early 2000s.
The 765’s September excursion took it westward toward St. Louis, passing
through Buck Creek on the 5th
, and back to its home base in Fort Wayne on the
11th
. See more pics of the eastbound locomotive and its cars on page 10.

YES KITS REPORT! 100 Yes kits delivered to Joe Wagner for Operation Classroom! Plus a big
box of teacher supplies! They will be part of a shipment to Tubman-Gray
School (with 1000 students) in Liberia in late September or early October.
The Missions Committee thanks all who donated school supplies and helped
pack kits, the Sew 'n' Sews (especially Nancy Balser) and others for sewing
bags, and for those who donated money to pay for Bibles and the cost of
shipping. If you didn't get to participate yet--or want to do more--we still need
donations for that! We
are sending 14 boxes
and shipping costs
Operation Classroom
$15 per box. Donations
may be made to
BCUMC: just designate
for YES kits shipping.
Thank you!
When I dropped off
the boxes, I asked Joe
about sending sewing
supplies. I've inherited
more than I will ever
use: needles, pins,
thread, trims, etc. Joe said they would be very much appreciated for those who
are learning to sew as a means of earning a living. Would anyone like to help
me? -Mindy Jester

AN EVENING WITH…ALICIA KENT
Alicia Kent will present a program on “SEXTING - Is your teen at risk?”
(“Sexting” = Sex + Text) The presentation is sponsored by the Ladies
Missionary Society and will be on Monday, October 1, 6:30 pm, at Buck
Creek United Methodist Church in Buck Creek.
Alicia has a Master of Science in School Counseling degree from Butler
University. Sexting is sending nude or semi-nude photographs from one cell
phone to another. Are the teens in your life at risk? You may be startled by
recent survey results. Alicia will speak about the legal and social problems
associated with sexting, as well as provide helpful tips and resources so you
can deter any sexting in your teen’s life. For more information, contact Ruth
Davidson, 589-3033. Refreshments will follow the program, and the
community is welcome to attend.

FIVE QUESTIONS This month we check in with
Jim & Anita Davidson. They will
celebrate their 28th
anniversary
on October 27th
. Let’s see what
they’re up to…
JIM 1. How did you and Anita meet?
>> My brother Tom played baseball for
Lafayette Post 11 and while attending
his games is where I first met Anita.
Anita was going to support her
boyfriend who was on the same team. I
would take Ryan with me who was 3
years old at the time
and Anita would
bring the little girl
she was babysitting, a
3 year old named
Adrienne. A lot of the
games were held at
Loeb Stadium in
Columbian Park and
we’d end up doing
things with the kids
together.
2. What is a cause
closest to your
heart?
>> It’s absolutely sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. I’ve
been blessed to be a part of doing this in serving through the Kairos prison
ministry, the Lafayette Great Banquet and Awakening communities and
preparing a weekly message for the Contemporary Service. All glory to God!
3. What’s something you’ve overcame your fear of?
>> I remember when I was younger I didn’t like to talk on the phone, I would
try my best to avoid having to call pretty much anyone. My mom would keep
encouraging me to exercise using the phone to overcome this fear. Little did I
know how much I would use the phone in the jobs I’ve held and how much I
appreciated the inspiration I received in my youth.
7
4. When a woman says "I'll be ready in a minute" how long is that?
>> I’ve been married long enough to know that whenever she’s ready it must
have taken approximately a minute to accomplish.
5. Complete the phrase “Thank You God for…”
>> .......for saving my soul. Thank You God for making me whole. Thank You
God for giving to me, Thy great salvation so rich and free! This is first, and
the second is for the blessing of my wife, Anita in my life! I can’t adequately
describe just how much she brings to our relationship, she truly is a gift from
the Lord! I’m also thankful for the Lord‘s gift of creation found in our
children and grandchildren.
ANITA 1. How did Jim propose to you?
>> Well, since Jim comes from a family full of comedians, especially the men,
he decided to propose on April fools day. Of course he wasn’t really fooling,
but he does like to be a jokester.
2. What's a favorite memory you have of your wedding day?
>> I thought it was pretty cool when Reverend Kendall said “Jim could kiss
the bride”, so we kissed and then he said “due to equal opportunity Anita, you
may kiss your husband”, so I planted another one on him.
3. If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?
>> Satan! That would solve everything.
4. What’s your comfort food?
>> Dark chocolate and Jim’s awesome filet mignon.
5. Complete the phrase "Thank You God for..."
>> loving me so much that You sent your only Son and because I believe in
Him I shall not perish but have everlasting life. Thank You also for blessing
me with Jim and teaching us how to become one in the spirit. I thank Him for
our children and grandchildren, small group, church, Lafayette Great
Banquet, Awakening and Kairos communities, health, healing of relationships,
healing from addictions, our jobs..... how can I stop thanking Him? He has
blessed us abundantly.

THANK YOU Dear Sew & Sews,
On behalf of
Heartford House, I
would like to take
this opportunity to
thank you for your
recent donation of
sock monkeys. We
were thrilled to
receive this
donation and have
begun giving them
out. The children
who have gotten
them love them.
Heartford House seeks to provide a neutral, child-friendly environment for
young people who must undergo an investigation interview related to abuse or
neglect. While it is our wish that such a service would not have to be
provided, Heartford House takes great pride in offering a nurturing
environment for children who must be interviewed. So far in 2012, 249
children have been interviewed in our facility, and since our opening in April
2000, we have served over 3700 children. Your contribution to Heartford
House will allow our organization to better serve the children and families of
Tippecanoe and surrounding counties as they face a difficult situation. Thank
you for your thoughtfulness. Sincerely,
- Jen Bushore-Barry, Executive Director, Heartford House

OBIT “As a church family, and members of the Buck Creek community, we strive
to stay connected to one another. As the bible says, “Rejoice with those who
rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn.” –Romans 12:15.
ILA LUCILLE YOUNKER, 89 Ila Lucille Misner Younker, 89 years young, of Buck
Creek, Indiana, died at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, August 23,
2012 in her Buck Creek residence. Born on Thursday,
August 9, 1923 in Fremont, MI, she was the daughter of
the late Clarence Misner & Marie Meeuwenberg Misner.
She was a 1941 graduate of Buck Creek High School.
She married Charles N. Younker on Saturday, January 5,
1946 in Mishawaka, IN and he preceded her in death on
July 3, 2009.
Ila previously worked for Alcoa during WWII. She was the former owner
& manager of the Kozy Korner Restaurant in Buck Creek. She was also a cook
for East Tipp School. Ila also managed Misner’s Grocery Store in Buck Creek
for 38 years. Every child that went to "Ila's store" was treated with patience by
Ila as she looked at the small faces peering into the old candy case, their wide
eyes trying to make that decision on which pieces of candy they wanted. She
patiently held the little brown paper sacks in anticipation of their requests,
putting the pieces of candy in one by one. When the store closed on March 24,
2003, it was a sad day for children and adults who remember their "Ila's store"
days.
Ila was a former member of Buck Creek Methodist Church. She was Past
Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 374 in Buck Creek.
She loved jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles & quilting.
Surviving are children: Erle Younker (wife: Linda) of Punta Gorda, FL,
Charles Richard "Rick" Younker of Buck Creek, Jeff Younker of Buck Creek
& foster Daughter, Kathy Davis (husband: Bill) of Lafayette, a brother: Carl
"Ike" Misner of Buck Creek, 5 grandchildren: Michelette Younker, Todd
lla was also Jane Faurote’s aunt. Jane says of her Aunt Ila: “she was always
the same and very pretty.”
Ila was preceded in death by one son: James L.Younker, 3 brothers: Robert,
Gilbert & Gayland Misner.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Monday at Hippensteel Funeral Home.
Funeral Service were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, at Hippensteel Funeral
Home with Rev. Dr. Clayton Kendall officiating. Interment at North Union
Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Cancer
Network. Sincere sympathies to Ila's family and friends, in fact the whole
Buck Creek Community mourns her passing...

MEMORIES OF ILA
+ I remember Ila from the time she had the restaurant with the wonderful “sit
and chat with the guys” (all local comedians or farmers such as Charlie
Younker, Harold Parks, Dick Pearson, Ralph Wise, etc.) breakfast time and
then the store which had such a (seemed like) huge candy display. My
children could go in there with $.25 to spend and it would take half a day just
to decide what they wanted!! Ila was such an understanding person who
loved to see happy faces in her store. Some of my Grandchildren would later
get to reap the excitement of “candy shopping” with Ila. I always thought that
MAYBE, just maybe, she had all that candy on display to give the kids a
challenge or a lesson in marketing, i.e. 1 cent candy or 2 pieces for a penny.
Either way, boy was it fun for us all. Many people who needed to be prayed
for, taken food to or sometimes just called to chat with, had been the recipient
of Ila’s concern and then the need to let others know of whom in our
community needed attention of some kind.
Dave and I graduated with Rick and Jim’s wife and he remains a dear friend to
this day as Earl and Jeff are.. We will all miss Ila and her wonderful smile. -
Sandy Collier
+ I remember working with Ila on the Buck Creek Alumni dinner in the 1960's
Ila running the Buck Creek grocery store and the children coming in to
buy penny candy. The children loved the variety of candy she sold. Ila at
Kozy Corner Restaurant and the home cooked meals that she prepared. Some
people came in for breakfast and visiting friends. In recent time Ila would pass
16
some of the jigsaw puzzles that she had made on to us (my sister and I) so that
we could put them together also. -Rose Mary Wiegand Patrick
+ Nathan Day had a real good tribute to Ila in today’s Sunday paper (Lafayette
Journal & Courier, September 16)--its on the page C-2--maybe you could use
some of that as I'm sure he wouldn't mind. When I was in charge of Fish Fry
raffle I would leave $50 worth of tickets and she would always sell or buy
when I came back later to pick up. Ila's store was a real good thing for Buck
Creek. -Dick Wiegand
+ She was a very special lady in the community. I coached softball so on hot
days would take my team down to this quaint country store to get pop out of a
pop cooler like in the fifties and get penny candy, my girls thought that was
great. Ila was so sweet and would talk to them about the relics she had in the
store that they had never seen. They talked about games and practice and she
would be at the counter (making sure they didn't touch anything) ha ha
Charlie, Jerry and Clarence were partners in crime and tried to get her going,
Charlie was the mayor of Buck Creek but behind every successful man is a
woman and that was Ila. Those guys loved to tease her, You could smell food
cooking in the back, I would comment on the aroma and sometimes she gave
me a sample. Yum yum! Clarence and I would go in and get a huge pickle
from her pickle jar ( I think of her when I see pickles being sold at ball games).
Sometimes she would have me take a package over to the elevator or get
something from Helen Simms and the country restaurant. Breakfasts there
were always good and she would tell me who had been there that morning.
Helen would make Ila a plate and I would run it over. Charlie and Ila
represented a life of country living to farmers and all those passing through.
The day the store closed was sad for all of us but many memories remain in
our hearts as we remember the legacy of their life in Buck Creek. The country
store was always a stop when the fish fry was held at Buck Creek. City people
got a little taste of what country folk were like. She blest many people with
stories and I am thankful and grateful for her wisdom in my life. I would take
my Sunday school class to sing carols at Christmas and the kids would make
cookies. It was a touching season for us all. Clarence was a nut around her and
they loved to banter with each, Charlie was his best bud. Ila and Charlie are in
the streets of gold now but memories will always live in our hearts… -Linda
LaMaster

visiting the store with grandchildren Ryan Linn and Amy (Guckien) Linn.
Notice the brown bags of candy on the counter. A moment frozen in time…)

CLEANING UP WILDCAT CREEK
Haleigh Taylor, an 8th
grader from our church
and another student from
Beacon Academy, or-
ganized a clean-up of 5
miles of the Wildcat Creek
on August 22nd . Sixty
volunteers came to help
and receive a t-shirt!
Setting out in canoes, they
found all kinds of weird
things in the creek. Items
included a 1940's truck, a
refrigerator, car parts, a
bicycle, a recliner,
unbroken glass pop bottles
and jars, and lots of tires!
Why do people throw
things like that in the
water!! Kyle & Molly
Schnepp were among the
volunteers and are glad
they went to help. Like
Haleigh, they are really
into saving our envi-
ronment and recycling.
Kudos to Haleigh for her
tremendous efforts in
making this clean-up
happen. (Haleigh is the
daughter of BCUMC
members Mike & Sum-
mer Taylor, and grand-
daughter to John &
Willy Metro.)
The jars and bottles pictured were found in a fill dump. The Big Boy soda bottle (center) was bottled in Flora, IN during the late 20’s or early 30’s . Along with several other various bottles and jars found there was an early Chocola bottle, a
turn of the century “3-L” Ball jar, and a marble.

“results” of the
trash cleanup!

FISH FRY 2012 REPORT The hot weather
and bright sunlight
helped the Buck
Creek UMC ice
cream booth sell out
of almost every
flavor! Thanks to
Mindy Jester for
organizing the booth
and to all who
helped! You know
who you are!
Some new
entertainment this
year were students
from Dance Moves &
Gymnastics. They were celebrating 30 years of
teaching. Girls and guys from different age groups
participated. The Country Kernels entertained us
with song.
Of course there was fish! We haven’t received
a report yet on how many meals were served, but
when we do, you’ll be the first to know.
The Cake Auction at this year’s Buck Creek
Fish Fry brought special meaning to many. The
biggest cake was made in the shape and colors of
the 72 year old Buck Creek Elevator. It was
auctioned not once, but
twice! The first time this
giant cake brought a bid of
$230. Then it was turned
back in to be auctioned
again. The second time the
bidding went on and on,
with a final bid of $410 !
And the best part was, it was
purchased in the memory of
Ila Younker. Wonder who
ate all that cake!

BAPTISM STORIES It’s Sunday, September
16th 2012, a little over a
year from when I had first
been given the thought of
baptizing in our pool and
which was to be followed
with a celebration dinner.
In my mind it was going to
be a time of true celebration
to our Father in heaven for
all He is doing. Well today
is the day, the time to
celebrate has come, as we
experience the Lord at work
in the hearts of His people.
This day (and you can tell
by the clarity of the
pictures) was a beautiful late summer day, one in which most years our pool
would have been already closed for the winter. But not this year, for God had
a better plan, as there were four baptisms to be done. The faithful foursome
included Jim Davidson Jr.,
Jamie Davidson, Clayton
Temple and Logan
Schumacher. You see it was
just one week earlier after
the second service that
Clayton was accepting Jesus
as his Lord and Savior, that
rekindled the vision from a
year earlier again. Jamie had
expressed a desire to be
baptized (fully immersed)
last year and there had been
discussion about the logistics
of a horse tank for such an
occasion in the church. Well
that hasn’t happened yet, so
after sharing with Anita the
possibilities of having it
done in our pool we decided
to move ahead with the idea.
Each time it was shared, first
with Dwight, then Jamie and
21
Clayton the excitement grew. As the word of a Baptism got out it became
contagious, at least in the sense that Logan wanted to be a part of this as well.
I had asked him to call so we could discuss the meaning and decision to be
baptized, and
the clarity in
which a 12
year old spoke
was obviously
Spirit directed.
This was the
beginning of
confirming we
were on the
right path. Not
to be taken
lightly more
confirmation
was received in
the temperature of the pool water (which is solar heated only) being warm
