Legislators Hatcher, Schmitz reflect on their careersBy ERIC SCHELKOPF

[email protected]

Republican state Rep. KayHatcher recently was in herYorkville district office sign-ing notes of congratulations toconstituents and others whorecently have been featured innewspaper stories.

“It is a good way to remindpeople they are important,”said Hatcher, as she gets readyto leave the state legislatureafter serving the 50th Districtsince 2009.

Her last day is Jan. 14.Both Hatcher and state Rep.

Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, whoalso is leaving the state legis-lature in January, said theyhave tried during their legisla-tive careers to always put theinterests of the people first.Schmitz, who represents the65th District, first was electedto the House in 1999.

The districts representedby Hatcher and Schmitz rep-resent a significant chunk ofKane County. The 50th Dis-trict covers much of southwestKane County and northernKendall County, includingSugar Grove, Elburn, Camp-ton Hills and Yorkville, as wellas portions of St. Charles, Bat-avia, North Aurora, Aurora,Montgomery and Oswego.

The 65th District representsparts of Batavia, Geneva, St.Charles, Campton Hills, PlatoCenter, South Elgin, Hamp-shire and Huntley.

“This is a microcosm ofAmerica here,” Hatcher said.“I have both gravel roads andsuperhighways in my district.”

In looking back at what hehas done in his legislative ca-reer, Schmitz noted that mostof his accomplishments have in-volved “sticks and bricks.” Thatincluded paving the way for thetransfer of hundreds of acres ofland about 12 years ago fromthe Illinois Department of Cor-rections to the St. Charles ParkDistrict and other agencies.

“It took several years to do,”Schmitz said. “It was the lastbill of the night of my very firstsession. That’s where they [theSt. Charles Park District] nowhave the water park and all

the soccer fields. The Park Dis-trict’s long-term planning wasto acquire all that land.”

Schmitz said a lot of his billswere constituent driven, suchas a bill requiring mandatorycar booster seats for kids. Thebill failed the first time.

“We had a lot of educationto do,” he said. “We had a lot ofpeople opposed to it.”

Schmitz ran for the statelegislature on the issue thatpeople should have the right

to carry concealed weapons. On Jan. 1, people in Illinois forthe first time were allowed toapply for the ability to carryguns in a concealed fashion.Illinois was the last state to al-low concealed carry.

“There were only a handfulof states at the time that hadit,” Schmitz said. “I didn’t un-derstand the objections to it.”

Hatcher’s first vote in theHouse was to impeach then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who

is serving an 18-year jail sen-tence for 18 counts of politicalcorruption, including tryingto sell Barack Obama’s oldSenate seat.

“I should have knownwhat the next six years wouldbe like,” Hatcher said with alaugh.

In crafting legislation,Hatcher said she has turned tothe needs of her constituents. For example, after visitingwith a local farmer, she intro-duced a bill protecting farm-ers’ pastures from deer herds.

Another bill she co-spon-sored was designed to protectfunerals of military person-nel from hate groups such asthe Westboro Baptist Church.Hatcher said the idea for thebill came from a Northern Illi-nois University class.

Earlier this year, she ad-vanced legislation to protectagainst fraud in Illinois’ food, medical and other public as-sistance programs and to pro-tect those who need assistancefrom being victimized by scamartists.

“My efforts rise from con-stituent needs and personalexperience, not a search for ahigh-profile issue,” Hatchersaid.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schiel-ke said the fact Schmitz andHatcher had government ex-perience before being electedto the state legislature servedthem well. Schmitz servedfour years on the Batavia CityCouncil before being electedto the state legislature in 1999,and Hatcher’s past experienceincludes being a member of theKendall County Board.

“They both understood thelocal picture and the local per-spective,” Schielke said. “Theywere always there to work forthe best interests of their con-stituents.”

He also appreciated thefact that they have been only aphone call away.

“They were always acces-sible,” Schielke said. “I guessthere are some state represen-tatives that are somewhat hardto get ahold of. But they’ve al-ways been very accessible and

listen to what you had to say.”

ST. CHARLES – The areaof downtown St. Charles nearHotel Baker was filled with on-lookers for most of Labor Dayweekend as word spread of acelebrity wedding with somecelebrity guests.

Many news outlets reportedthat entertainers Jenny Mc-Carthy and Donnie Wahlbergwould be married over the La-bor Day weekend in New York. But then the couple was photo-graphed Aug. 29 walking intothe Hotel Baker in St. Charles.

The weekend continuedwith more candid photos andsightings of celebrities, in-cluding Wahlberg’s mother,Alma, on Aug. 30 on the FirstStreet Plaza and Sherri Shep-herd, McCarthy’s former co-host on “The View,” on Aug.31, said Sharon Wells of SouthElgin.

Wells said Shepherd wasdropped off about 2:30 p.m.Aug. 31 outside of Hotel Bak-er.

The Kane County Chroni-cle, sister paper of The Repub-lican, could not independentlyverify the account of Wells andother sources, but their sight-ings were corroborated byother onlookers who also tookphotos of the same people.

Shepherd had indicated onher official Instagram accountshe was catching an earlyflight to attend McCarthy’swedding. She later tweetedfrom the wedding on her Twit-ter account.

Wells first got word of a lo-cal McCarthy-Wahlberg wed-ding Aug. 28 from two of herco-workers at St. Charles-basedSmartSource. Her co-workersattended a sales meeting at ahotel on St. Charles’ east sideand heard from some hotelstaff members their buildingwould serve overflow guests

for the celebrities’ wedding.Wells said she even saw the

bride herself on the night ofAug. 30 from outside of one ofthe Rox City Grill windows.

“You could see Jenny [Mc-Carthy] through the window,”Wells said. “The securitykicked us out ... we were rightup against the glass.”

There was a noticeable se-curity presence outside of Ho-tel Baker all weekend, whichcontinued to intensify Aug.31, when the sidewalk on thenorth side of Main Street wasclosed off from the east endof the Main Street bridge out-side of the St. Charles Munic-ipal Center to right before thenortheast corner of Main andSecond streets.

Two St. Charles police of-ficers flanked the east andwest sides of the hotel, and St.Charles police squad cars con-tinually moved up and downMain Street in front of the ho-tel. A black unmarked squadcar was parked near the westend of the bridge most of theafternoon Aug. 31.

Cathy Skinner of Elgin saidshe and other onlookers wereon the north sidewalk before it

was closed off about 2:20 p.m.Aug. 31, about 10 minutes be-fore Shepherd’s reported ar-rival. Jordan Knight, one ofWahlberg’s New Kids on theBlock bandmates, was outsideof the hotel about 2 p.m., Skin-ner said.

Skinner heard about thewedding from her friends, whohad been outside of the hotelAug. 30. Then she read about itin the Sunday papers.

Skinner was near the ho-tel for about five hours Aug.31, ready to take pictures ofany possible celebrities withher iPhone. She was joined onthe south side of Main Streetby several other people andcameramen from two different

Chicago TV stations. The activity also was great

for surrounding businessesin downtown St. Charles. Theoutside dining area of Zaza’s

Italian Steakhouse, locatedacross Main Street from Ho-tel Baker, was noticeably fullnearly all weekend.

Keaton O’Connor, a serverat McNally’s Traditional IrishPub across from the hotel, couldn’t figure out whetherthe increased business wasfrom the holiday or the wed-ding. He said guests from thewedding, some with recogniz-able and often-photographedfaces, patronized the pub allweekend. He declined to givenames but said they obligedwhen other patrons asked totake photos with them.

People like Wells sat insideof McNally’s next to the win-dows the afternoon of Aug. 31in the hopes of seeing someonefamous across the street at thehotel.

“It’s fun,” Wells said. “Whatelse are you going to do on a

holiday weekend?”

Involuntary twitching of the eyelid (usually

the lower lid), known as “myokymia,” tends to

occur mostly in one eye among young, healthy

individuals. The twitching, which may last

from several hours to several days, is due to

contractions of a portion of the “orbicularis oculi”

muscle or other facial muscles. The twitching is

commonly triggered by stress, caffeine, and lack

of sleep. By reducing these factors, the twitching

can often be eliminated. However, if the problem

persists on a daily basis for two months or longer,

treatment with an injection of Botox may eliminate

it. If myokymia starts in one eyelid and spreads

to other parts of the face, further examination is

strongly recommended.

P.S. If Botox injections do not eliminate

myokymia, “myectomy” (surgical removal of the

eyelid- and brow-squeezing muscles) may be

required in severe cases.

Area residents beingwarned of solicitor scam

By ERIC [email protected]

N O R T H A U R O R A –Marklund is warning arearesidents to beware of a scamthat involves door-to-door so-licitors requesting donationsto cover the costs of repairs atits campus.

Marklund is a nonprofitagency serving adults andchildren with severe develop-mental disabilities. In a newsrelease, Marklund officialssaid people have been tar-geting North Aurora neigh-borhoods, saying they wererepresenting Marklund in so-liciting donations to help payfor repairs for the facility afterit had been damaged by severeweather.

One resident told Marklundofficials late on the afternoonof Aug. 26 a man approxi-mately 70 years old rang herdoorbell, even though she ison North Aurora’s No Solici-tation list and has “No Solic-

iting” signs on her door. Theman didn’t have any identi-fication around his neck buthad a clipboard with a listingof last names of people in theneighborhood.

“He said he was fromMarklund, asked me if I everheard of Marklund and that hewas asking for donations forweather damage to the build-ing from this past winter,” theresident told Marklund offi-cials.

The resident did not givemoney but found out later aneighbor had.

“We are disappointed tohear the people are usingMarklund’s name and goodreputation for their own bene-fit,” Marklund CEO Gil Fongersaid, according to the release.“It’s unfortunate because peo-ple who do end up giving mon-ey to this person or these peo-ple believe it is going to helpthe children and adults withprofound disabilities whom we

serve, and of course, it’s not.”

Cadence, Northwestern integration beginsBy CHARLES MENCHACA

[email protected]

The merger between Ca-dence Health and Northwest-ern Memorial HealthCare isfinalized, the organizationsannounced last month in ajoint news release.

As of Sept. 1, Cadence willbe formally integrated withNorthwestern, and they willoperate under the Northwest-ern Medicine brand name, according to the release. Thefour hospitals in the healthsystems are Delnor Hospitalin Geneva, Central DuPageHospital in Winfield, North-western Memorial Hospitalin Chicago and NorthwesternLake Forest Hospital in LakeForest.

The Cadence name will bephased out as a result of themerger, Chris King, CadenceHealth senior manager of pub-lic relations, said in a phoneinterview.

“Anything under the Ca-dence umbrella is now partof Northwestern Medicine,”King said, including the Ca-dence Cancer Center thatopened in 2013 on the Delnorcampus.

“We are honored to wel-come Cadence Health intothe Northwestern Medicine

family,” Dean M. Harrison,N o r t h w e s t e r n M e m o r i a lHealthCare president andCEO, said in the release.“Cadence is an ideal healthsystem to combine with, astheir vision, mission and val-ues are very similar to ours.Together, we will continueto deliver the NorthwesternMedicine brand promise, which is to provide trusted, quality care that is accessiblewhere patients live and work– safe and accountable, andcentered on world-class med-icine.”

The Illinois Health Facil-ities and Services ReviewBoard on July 14 unanimous-ly approved NorthwesternMemorial HealthCare’s ap-plication to combine healthsystems. Information on themerger also was sent to theFederal Trade Commission, which had a 30-day periodto review the organizations’plans. The review periodpassed without any objectionsfrom the commission, Kingsaid.

The integration creates anexpanded health delivery net-work encompassing more than60 sites of care with about 1,600inpatient beds total acrossmetro Chicago and the northand western suburbs, accord-

ing to the release. The merged health system

will include 19,500 employees,7,600 of which are Cadence anda combined medical staff with4,000 physicians, more than1,400 of them from Cadencehospitals, King said.

King confirmed the merg-er was completed without anystaff reductions and that thehealth system would have agreater likelihood of increas-ing its workforce instead.

Harrison remains presi-dent and CEO of the expandedhealth system, and Mike Vivo-da, Cadence Health’s presidentand CEO, will be the group’sregional president of its West-ern Region.

Other Cadence executivesthat will transition to North-western Memorial HealthCareinclude John Orsini, CadenceCFO and executive vice pres-ident, who will be named themerged group’s CFO and se-nior vice president. Liz Rosen-berg, Cadence’s executive vicepresident of strategy and ad-ministration, was named thegroup’s senior vice presidentof strategy.

“Our union is great for pa-tients because it positions usto continue to provide unri-valed quality care within our

communities,” Vivoda said.

By ERIC [email protected]

BATAVIA – There is a new venue indowntown Batavia for people to watchfootball games or just hang out withfriends.

“We serve classic American bar foodmade fresh and the right way,” said Rich-ard Kaniuga, the restaurant’s executivechef.

Jody and Joel Hutchison, who alsoown White Tavern in Naperville, openedRivers Edge earlier this year.

“The bar has a lot of history,” RiversEdge night manager Jason Hunley said.“It was a way for them to step in and bepart of the community.”

According to Hunley, the buildingdates back to the 1800s and has been a barsince the early 1900s.

Those who were regular customers atO’Brien’s will find that Rivers Edge Barand Grill is sporting a new look. Alongwith the restaurant having new tablesand chairs, the floors have been redone.

In addition, the bar seating has beenexpanded and additional big screen tele-vision sets have been brought in. RiversEdge also has an expansive outdoor pa-tio.

In addition, Rivers Edge featuresa new menu. Those who attended lastweekend’s Batavia Block Party had thechance to sample the restaurant’s food.

Rivers Edge serves hand-pressed,half-pound burger patties. For vegetari-ans, Rivers Edge also serves a portabellamushroom sandwich.

“It’s been a popular item,” Kaniugasaid.

He also plans to expand the menu andoffer gourmet hot dogs, such as a BLT hotdog. By doing so, the restaurant hopes toset itself apart even more from other es-tablishments.

“Where else in town can you get a hotdog and a beer and watch a game?” Hun-ley asked.

North River Street features severalrestaurants. Hunley said he hopes Riv-ers Edge adds to the vibrancy of NorthRiver Street and downtown Batavia.

“I think whatever is great for onebusiness is great for all of them,” Hunleysaid.

Rivers Edge also showcases local en-tertainment, including an open mic nighton Tuesdays and a monthly Slam Jam,where local musicians play together.

“It’s a great way for artists to show-case skills and play off each other,” Hun-ley said.

National Geographic’sWILD is bringing na-ture back with its new

series “Pond Stars,” a showthat plucked its title charactersright out of Kane County.

In its first season, the showfollows local water-featurespecialists Greg Wittstock(“The Boss”), a Wayne residentand owner of St. Charles-basedAquascape – a supplier ofwater gardening supplies – andlongtime co-workers Ed Beau-lieu (“The Scientist”) of SugarGrove and Brian Helfrich (“TheForeman”) of Downers Grove,as well as new guy Chris Han-son of Naperville.

Filmed locally, and in otherU.S. cities, “Pond Stars” aimsto reconnect a digital-depen-dent society with nature bytransforming dreary backyardsinto tranquil retreats. Camerascapture individual projectscarried out by the Aquascapeteam, including an oasis atKaneland High School, a zoohabitat project, a backyardremodel for a football-teamowner and a healing garden fora cancer survivor.

“Pond Stars” premieres at9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, on NatGeo WILD.

Features editor Kara Silvagot a chance to chat with “PondStar” character Beaulieu abouthis role on the show, reconnect-ing with nature and his firstforay in filming reality TV.

Kara Silva:Well, first off, congrats on

the show. Are you pretty excited for it to

premiere?

Ed Beaulieu: Yeah, you knowwhat? I am. Because we’vespent so much time filmingover many, many months, talking about it, doing all thefilming, traveling all over theplace and, now, all of a sudden,we’re actually going to seesomething.

I’m also a little bit nervousbecause you don’t know how it’sgoing to turn out. We don’t seeall the footage and everything;we see little bits and pieces.

Silva: How did the idea for “Pond

Stars” the TV show come about?

Beaulieu: It actually had start-ed years ago.

[Aquascape’s] main businessis the design, [building] andinstallation of water featuresthroughout the Chicagolandarea, but we also have anotherelement of our business, whichis the manufacturing andtraining of the people for theproducts that we install.

So, with that, we have alwaysdone training videos, books, magazines, articles, blogs, Face-book, Youtube [and] that wentout to landscape contractors andprofessional installers through-out North America.

Somebody – a produc-tion company – had actuallywatched one of those videos;they found them on Youtubeand liked what they saw. Thishappened years ago, and noth-ing happened.

This happened multipletimes. And then finally abouttwo years ago, another produc-tion company came to us withthe same exact story.

We said, “Yeah, no problem,we’ve heard this before.”

We made another videowith them, and – this time – thetiming was right or they putit in the right person’s handsor whatever, and we ended up

getting contacted by a network.

Silva:What do youwant people

to know about this show? What’s the

premise?

Beaulieu: The premise of theshow is pretty simple. Whatwe’re doing is we’re trying totake ordinary people in typicalsuburbia and we’re trying togive them a wildlife experience.

So, by adding that aquaticelement, putting in some sortof a decorative water feature orsmall pond, you will bring ina lot of life from the surround-ing area. It’s turning it intothis little microworld in yourbackyard.

Silva: How did you land a spot on

“Pond Stars”?Were you always in the

running and always a part of it or did you

have to audition?

Beaulieu: I was always in therunning, and I think it’s becauseI was one of the first peoplehired [at Aquascape] and I haddesigned and built over 1,500water features throughout theworld. So, between Greg, Brianand myself, we have the mostexperience in the company indoing this.

Silva:What is your role on the show?

Beaulieu: So, there are threemain characters: Greg is theowner – he’s the boss guy;

Brian is the foreman, so he isin charge of the installations;and, my degree is in zoology, soI have that wildlife background, and I specialize in aquaticbiology.

So, I am known as the scien-tist on the show.

Silva: So, you’re the brains of the

operation?

Beaulieu: [Laughs.] Yeah, well all three of us have a lot ofbrains, but I kind of take it to ascience, nerdy level, I guess youcould call it.

Silva: “Pond Stars” is a reality TV

show. Were you a fan of reality TV before

making your own show?

Beaulieu:Oh, yeah. Absolutely.Reality TV is the norm, so thereis such a diversity of programson TV right now. You can liter-ally find a TV show on anythingthat you’re interested in, andbecause of my background inscience and everything, I am aNational Geographic junkie soI was thrilled when I found outwe were with National Geo-graphic.

Silva: Is the show scripted?

Beaulieu: It is not. It’s notscripted at all.

Silva:What was the filming experi-

ence like? Was there anything that you

learned aboutmaking reality TV that you

didn’t initially realize before going into it?

Beaulieu:Oh my God, prettymuch everything. I mean wehad no clue. We’re going intothis with our basic understand-ing of how we would film one ofour training videos. But whenyou have a full blown produc-tion company ... there are moreof them on the job site thanthere are of us actually workingand installing the features.

They’re trying to weave afull blown story out of what theysee. We’ll have 100-plus hours offootage for one episode, so howthey can condense all of thatfootage down to one episode – tome – is a daunting task.

Silva: Is any of the show filmed in the

KaneCounty area?

Beaulieu: It is. There aremultiple things filmed in KaneCounty. ... I would say out ofany other place in the country,we have more filmed in KaneCounty than anywhere else.

Silva:Why do you think people will

be interested in watching a show like

this? What will they get out of it?

Beaulieu: In today’s worldeverybody has a very hecticlife, high stress jobs, and we’realways running to take the kidsto ball games, soccer practice, whatever. ... There are directcorrelations between stressrelief and having an aquaticelement.

The other thing is, duringthe construction process insuburbia, we’ve had to – unfor-tunately – destroy or move anddisplace a lot of local wildlife.

So, all of these animals thatnormally live in Kane Countyhave been displaced and pushedout to the outer fringes.

So, by us doing these littlebackyard oases, we’re invitingsome of that wildlife back in,which I think is very important.

Matthew Crafton knows heis part of history.

In June, he was promotedfrom assistant winemaker towinemaker at Chateau Mon-telena in Napa Valley, Califor-nia. Even though Crafton ranthe white wine program at Cha-teau Montelena, he becomesjust the fifth winemaker in thehistory of the iconic winery.

His journey as winemakerbegins with the 2014 harvest, which is challenged by thethird straight year of severedrought in California. It giveshim a chance to capture whatChateau Montelena does so well– tell the story of the vintage.

Winemaker spotlightCrafton thinks in terms of

evolution rather than revolu-tion.

“There’s no magical formulaI received when I was promot-ed,” Crafton quipped. “There’snot a key to a locker with the1973 formula. We look at everyvintage as a challenge ratherthan a chance to replicate pastsuccess. We want to continual-ly refine what we do and makemore elegant and complexwines.”

That is exactly what Craf-ton plans to do with the 2014vintage. Despite a three-yeardrought, the 2014 crop yieldsare only slightly lower than2013. A rain storm arrived fourweeks before bud break, but aswinemakers around Californiahave reported, the fruit is stillof high quality. It just maturedearlier this year.

“2014 looks like anothergreat vintage,” said Crawfton, who added this year is similarto 2004. “I’m excited to get tosink my teeth into the programon a bigger scale.”

“I didn’t expect a promotion. My first thought was, ‘Wow,this is awesome.’ For [ChateauMontelena CEO and MasterWinemaker] Bo Barrett to haveso much faith in me is humblingand exciting. It really got myblood flowing and reenergizedme to think about the future.”

What to buyChateau Montelena, Napa

Valley Cabernet Sauvignon,2011 ($50): This is an elegant,

balanced wine. Great aciditycompliments blackberry, aniseand cocoa powder notes. Thetannins are beautiful and it canbe enjoyed right now or a re-ward for those willing to cellarit for a few years.

Where to goFine food and wine are

staples in Galena. At the second annual Galena

Food and Wine Festival on Fri-day, Sept. 5, area chefs and winelovers will do something thatfits their expertise – put on agala event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. atthe Galena Convention Center.

Tim Althaus, generalmanager at Family Beer andLiquor, has selected more than200 varietals for the event.

“We had tremendous feed-back to last year’s first annualevent,” said Dave Decker, ex-ecutive director of the GalenaArt & Recreation Center, whichwill receive a portion of theevent’s proceeds. “Guests lovedthe wine tasting paired withsamples from our wonderfulGalena restaurants and cater-ers. It was a fun evening.”

Tickets for the Galena Foodand Wine Festival, which alsofeatures live music, a raffleand silent auction, cost $50per person and are availableat www.galenafoodandwinef-estival.com.

Napa Valley earthquakePictures of shattered bottles

and overturned barrels domi-nated my Twitter feed after a 6.0magnitude earthquake struckNapa Valley County the morn-ing of Aug. 24. Adam Lee hadthe best plan to help wineries.

The owner and talentedwinemaker at Siduri took tosocial media and used his Twit-ter handle, @SiduriWines, toencourage his followers to buya bottle of Napa Valley wine.

I bought Titus, Napa ValleyCabernet Sauvignon, 2010 ($45),a wine with deep purple color, very focused with fruit notesof strawberry and blackberry. There’s cedar in the mid-palate,loamy earth and some ripeplum and dried cherry notes onthe finish. It was a big wine fora Monday night, but it was for aworthy cause.

“Fortunately, the ChateauMontelena team is safe and wehave not sustained any damag-es to our facility or inventory,”Montelena spokeswoman SoniaMeyer wrote via email. “Ourdeepest sympathy and prayersgo out to those in the valleywho experienced the worst ofthe earthquake.”

GENEVA – Separate “StarWars” promotions bookend-ed the Cougars’ theme nightschedule during the winnin-gest regular season in fran-chise history.

Marketing department, take note: The club with thebest record in minor leaguebaseball plans to make eachremaining game ChemistryNight for the duration of itsMidwest League playoff run.

The Cougars began theirbest-of-three, first-round seriesagainst Wisconsin at 6:35 p.m.Sept. 3 at the Timber Rattlers’Fox Cities Stadium knowingtheir remarkable string ofstreaks and statistics resets. Theintangibles that brought them tothis point? That’s another story.

“I think that’s a huge thing,is all of us wanting to be here, not really wanting to go home,”right-handed reliever JamesPugliese said. “We’re winning,so we want to get the ring andthen it’s time to go home, youknow. So once we get that, thenwe’re ready to go.”

Kane County (91-49) qual-ified for the playoffs as theWestern Division’s first-half

champion, and sustained suc-cess amid a constant flurry ofroster moves paved the way toa would-be division crown inthe second half, as well. Wis-consin (72-67) advanced as thesecond-half wild card.

From Aug. 10 to Aug. 23, theCougars embarked on a fran-

chise-record 13-game winningstreak, and haven’t lost con-secutive games at home sincelate July, when Eastern Di-vision power West Michiganswept a three-game series atFifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The parent Cubs have made25 roster moves since, but the

Cougars simply have kept win-ning, both on the field and inthe numbers game. For all thetalk about 11 player promo-tions from Class-A Kane Coun-ty to Advanced-A Daytona andthe 11 players remaining fromwhen the team broke springtraining in April, here’s anoth-er stat that stands out:

Nine current Cougars ap-peared with Short-A Boisewhen the Hawks lost the 2013Northwest League Champion-ship Series.

“All of us blended pretty welllast year and I see being backhere that they we’re all blended,as well,” reliever Jasvir Rakkarsaid. “It’s been really nice.

“Everyone’s just on thesame page and everyone’s gotthe same ultimate goals at theend of the day.”

Rakkar joined the club fromBoise on July 28. Second base-man Daniel Lockhart, a Cou-gar for all of 2014 after spend-ing the majority of last seasonwith the Hawks, can attest tohis observation.

“I think the vibe’s reallybeen the same all year,” Lock-hart said. “I mean, no matterwhat guys come up or down,we still have kind of the samecore concept as far as winning

and trying to be the best thateveryone can be to contrib-ute. No matter if there’s a guythat gets sent down or sent up,whenever there’s a new guy, they seem to be buying into thesystem that we kind of set forthe first part of the season.”

That system, in short, translates to picking team-mates up whenever possiblebut still knowing not to press.

There’s always anotherplayer in the lineup, field orbullpen – or in the Cougars’case, the Cubs’ minor leaguesystem – eager to try the same.

“These guys never quit;they never give up. It’s justbeen really fun to watch forthe last five months. Just anincredible group of guys, anincredible staff and it’s justbeen fun,” Cougars managerMark Johnson said.

“Everybody enjoys comingto the field every day, workingand doing everything. I knowwinning helps, but it alsohelps that people enjoy doingtheir job and everybody getsalong and plays well togetherand practices well togetherand rides the bus well togeth-er. And that all counts. Soit’s been cool. ... A lot of cool

things have happened.”

By the editors of Relish Magazine

Berries combined with sugar and breadmay seem peculiar to Americans. ButEnglish Summer Pudding is nothing

short of brilliant. Fresh summer berries arewarmed with sugar and water until they giveup their glorious juice, then placed into abread-lined bowl. When left to chill in thefridge overnight, the bread transforms into acrimson-stained “cake” that oozes a cornu-copia of juicy goodness when sliced open. While the pudding is traditionally made

with stale white bread, raspberries and redcurrants, we’ve jazzed up the recipe by usingbrioche, a rich yeast bread made with eggs, butter and sugar available in most supermar-ket bakeries. And instead of red currants, weused blueberries, strawberries and blackber-ries.Really, any combination of berries will

work. We don’t fuss too much. We even de-cided not to worry over the bread crusts andleft them on. American ingenuity.

RELISHMAGAZINE

English Summer Pudding! 8 cups assorted fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries), divided! 1 cup water! 3/4 cup sugar! 1 T vanilla extract! 1 (18-ounce) brioche loaf! Whipped creamMix 6 cups of berries with the water and sugar in a large saucepan. Cook

over medium heat, stirring gently, until berries start to soften and sugar dis-solves, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat.Stir in remaining berries. Strain berry mixture, reserving all the juice and

berries. Stir vanilla into juice. Line a 2-quart serving bowl with plastic wrap.Cut a slice of brioche to fit the bottom of the bowl. Dip into juice and place

in bottom of bowl. Cut the remaining brioche into wedges and dip eachpiece, one at a time, into juice. Place three-fourths of the juice-soakedbrioche wedges against the sides of bowl pressing to remove any gaps.Spoon berries into center. Top with remaining brioche wedges.Cover with plastic wrap. Press down with your hands until juices rise to the

top. Place a plate on top, and set weights on the plate (2 or 3 cans of soupwork well). Refrigerate at least 8 hours. To serve, remove weights, plate and top plastic wrap. Place a serving plate

on top of bowl and quickly turn both over together, shaking gently, so thatthe pudding releases from the bowl. Remove plastic wrap. Cut into wedgesand serve with whipped cream. Serves 8.
