TELEDYNE’S IMAGING TECHNOLOGY SUPPORTING HOMELAND SECURITYTeledyne Defence Australia has been awarded an Australian Government contract to develop a next generation people-screening radar for homeland/domestic security applications.

The contract forms part of a larger bilateral cooperation between the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate and the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO).

The organisations are working together towards developing applications that will allow users, including security personnel, to screen a crowd for threats without interrupting the flow of traffic. This will enable the easy detection of prohibited items, such as weapons, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other contraband.

Tony Hall, Director of Teledyne in Australia said, “This award has allowed Teledyne to further develop its MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) imaging capability here in Australia, building on our existing expertise in this area.”

Teledyne has already developed niche radar imaging capability with the MIMO radar, “This system will allow screening at longer range for concealed explosives, weapons and other contraband, in real time, with people on the move,” Tony said.

“This new technology has the potential to change the way we move through check points, airports, stadiums and other critical infrastructure.”

“It allows security personnel to gather intelligence regarding potential threats much earlier and in doing so minimise congestion.”

Teledyne Defence Australia has been working in the area of MIMO imaging radars since 2006 and is a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated headquartered in California USA. They are also an occupant at 60 Brandl Street in the Brisbane Technology Park.

BTP’S OXFAM TRAILWALKER VETERAN: ONE THOUSAND KILOMETRES AND COUNTINGBrisbane Technology Park occupant completes 10th Oxfam Trailwalker and is eager for more.

In August 2014 Markinson CEO, Ian Whiting, completed his 10th Oxfam Trailwalker, walking a whopping 1,000km for charity, and raising thousands of dollars for life-saving work in third world countries.

The Sydney trek proved to be a challenge, with the track cold, wet and muddy due to weeks of heavy rain. In spite of these harsh conditions, Mr. Whiting’s team completed the course well within the 48 hour time limit.

Despite completing the gruelling 1,000km, Mr. Whiting, a lover of physical activity, is not putting up his running shoes and plans to continue frequenting Trailwalker events for Oxfam, a charity he holds close to his heart.

With his encouragement, employees at Markinson have also joined him in the physically and psychologically challenging 100km trek. “We are proud to be involved with the Oxfam Trailwalker. We chose to take part in this worthwhile event because it is a fantastic team endurance challenge and it also supports an important cause,” Mr. Whiting said.

Trailwalker is an inspiring and challenging program that changes lives and raises funds to support people living in poverty around the world. It is held in numerous countries across the globe and features a 100km trek, where teams of four walk or run together for 48 hours.

For more information, or to join the next Trailwalker in Brisbane on 19 - 21 June and make a difference, visit: https://trailwalker.oxfam.org.au/brisbane.

MONTROSEACCESS PREPARE FOR NEW ERA IN DISABILITY SUPPORTMontroseAccess made a momentous move late last year to their new premises at BTP Westlink Green, readying for the Government’s disability reforms, which will see a change in the landscape of disability support in Queensland.

The not-for-profit organisation moved from their Consort Street location in Corinda after 76 years at the site. CEO Linda Apelt said the decision was a strategic one. “By modernising our facilities and resources, reducing costs and locating ourselves in a growth area, MontroseAccess will be better able to continue the excellent standard of care which we are known for throughout Queensland.”

Their move comes at the same time as changes to the National Disability Insurance Agency, which will see a shift in the way

disability support is offered to the community, and will allow people with disability and their families’ greater choice and control over support services.

“This is a major milestone in our history and will enable MontroseAccess to grow and be in the best position for the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in 2016,” Ms. Apelt said.

“The new state-of-the-art headquarters features a range of cleverly designed amenities and décor to provide greater support for our staff and clients.

“It is located close to public transport with all-ability access and major road networks to enable clients, families, staff and supporters to easily reach and park at the new HQ. We are well-positioned to provide high quality service to young Queenslanders with a disability for decades to come.”

Despite the positives, the Consort Street location will be missed by staff and clients. “The site at Corinda has been vital to creating MontroseAccess as it is today. Whilst we are sad to leave this landmark site, our future at Darra is brighter because having a purpose built site will mean a whole new experience for our young clients, families and staff.”

The organisation made sure that the old site was commemorated, throwing a party to celebrate the sale of their historic site and 80 years of caring for generations of children with disability. “Former clients, carers and staff from across Queensland were invited to join the party, witness the preparation of a time capsule on our historic site and provide photos or memorabilia for inclusion in the capsule for preservation.” A memorial stone has also been placed in the foyer of their new premises. “The stone is a foundation stone from the original building

at Corinda in 1937. It is a historic reminder of the 76 years that Montrose has spent at Consort Street.”

But with every new beginning, there are challenges, and Ms. Apelt explained that despite government funding, community assistance is still very much needed and welcomed. “Our biggest challenge is to fund the gap between government funding, which we appreciate receiving, and the high level of service we provide. We very much rely on and value the support of the community.”

MontroseAccess is not letting any obstacles get in their way though, the organisation already has big plans for the future. “There are exciting changes ahead for us as an organisation in the next few years, including building a special Respite Centre on the Gold Coast in 2015, with the support of a major donor,” Ms. Apelt said.

GRAYSTONE GROUP MAKE A MOVE Graystone Group is once again backing its own development by moving to BTP Westlink Green.

The company made the move to their newest suburban business park, BTP Westlink Green on December 9th, taking occupancy of 2 Westlink Court after residing at their Park Road premises in Milton for 28 years.

Peter Robbie one of the founding directors of the Graystone Group said, “Our relocation from Park Road signifies the end of an era. When we started Graystone 30 years ago the street was mostly residential buildings with old boarding houses and student accommodation. It took Graystone more than two years to secure rezoning approval from

Brisbane City Council in the 1980s, to build our office. It’s interesting that Milton as a commercial area, peaked some years ago and now is rapidly reverting to residential with new accommodation towers that will ultimately occupy most sites in Milton.”

Mr. Robbie explained that there were a number of factors that lessen the appeal of fringe and CBD locations like Graystone’s old Milton address, the most obvious being peak hour traffic and the limited and extremely high cost of parking.

“The Graystone team is extremely excited about the move to BTP Westlink Green. We are all looking forward to beating the commute and occupying well appointed new offices,“ Mr. Robbie said.

BTP Westlink Green continues to attract tenants and gather development momentum, with the Graystone Group only one of the latest companies to relocate to the new precinct.

Much of the master planned business community’s popularity is attributed to its outstanding connectivity. With ease of access to the Centenary Highway and Ipswich Motorway, a short 20 minute drive to the CBD, and the Darra train station just across the road, businesses are flocking to the precinct.

The precinct is one of three Business and Technology Precincts under development by the Graystone Group, most notable of these being Brisbane Technology Park in Eight Mile Plains.

SUCCESS AROUND EVERY CORNER FOR REDEYE APPSRedEye has plenty to celebrate as they reflect on the amazing success and growth they have experienced over the last 12 months.

This BTP Westlink Green occupant won two category awards (Best Early Stage Company and Amazon Web Services Award) at Tech23, an annual event showcasing Australia’s most innovative tech companies.

RedEye Apps CEO, Wayne Gerard was allocated five minutes to present the company’s business model to a panel of industry leaders and an audience of over 400 potential investors, partners and customers.

“The opportunity to be part of such a reputable event was great for RedEye, we had the chance to meet amazing leaders, share our story and growth plan with the public and gain exposure in different markets,” Marketing Lead, Veronica Pires said.

The tech company was also featured in the international tech blog, Geektime as one of the Top 20 Austalian Startups based on their funding profile, number of users, market growth potential, level of innovation and leadership.

“It means a lot for RedEye and the team to have been given this exposure and to be recognised by such a reputable organisation

alongside such respectable startups,” Ms. Pires said.

The company has also been busy helping fellow startups, joining another BTP occupant, QMI Solutions last year in an interactive online webinar, to assist professionals in taking the next steps after that big business idea. CEO Wayne Gerard is an active entrepreneur and key player in the Brisbane Startup community. With the help of the Brisbane City Council, Wayne has created StartupBris, a hub that aims at helping local startups with VCs, investors and service providers’ information, local jobs and events.

There’s no doubt that the future is bright for this startup.“RedEye is going through a significant growth boom at the moment. We have expanded internationally, opening our first office in Houston in July and secured major clients and investors throughout the year. Our move to the BTP Westlink Green hub has also played a very important role in our development. When we first re-located to BTP in July we had six staff, now we are at twelve and will be 20 by early February. Having the ability to expand our offices within the precinct is crucial for our business, our team and our culture,” Ms. Pires said.

RedEye Apps is a leading, global provider of cloud-based engineering drawing collaboration and management solutions, servicing the mining, energy and water industries. For more information on the company, visit www.redeye.co or contact the team on 1300 236 673 or [email protected].

It is with much sadness that we advise that our beloved Managing Director, George Porter, passed away on the 11th November 2014, following an all too brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Those that were fortunate enough to have met George will, no doubt, be aware of his passion, drive and love of the scientific instrumentation, data acquisition and environmental monitoring industries. Above all else, the welfare of his staff, and commitment to fostering a family environment here at Pacific Data Systems was George’s number one priority - one which we are all blessed to be a part of.

George founded Pacific Data Systems in 1984 and, after having moved premises several times over the years, was elated to have finally found a “home” when moving the business to Brisbane Technology Park, in June 2010.

This proved a successful move as, within a few short years, the rapid growth of the business dictated that expansion of the building would be necessary. It is heart-warming that George got to see another phase of his vision completed before his unfortunate passing.

There are already more plans for growth in place; both in terms of personnel as well as the building itself.

George will be sorely missed but the vision that he established all

those years ago is something that we here at Pacific Data Systems will take pride in ensuring continues well into the future. Rest in Peace, George.

NOTICE FROM PACIFIC DATA SYSTEMS

I am responsible for ASSA ABLOY Australia’s Customer Service and Quality departments. I am heavily involved in e-Commerce and Seamless Flow. Seamless Flow is a document automation process to transform business administrative duties to increase efficiency and to ensure staff are focused on our customers, rather than data entry for example. I am also part of the Executive Team which is responsible for achieving the financial results and strategy for ASSA ABLOY Australia’s business.

What led you to your current role? I have been with ASSA ABLOY Australia for nearly 10 years and in my current role since

2009, having begun as a Queensland Team Coordinator in Customer Service. Whilst I had a background in Customer Service, I needed to gain an understanding of the functional business units within ASSA ABLOY Australia to assist in my current role, ensuring we are able to work towards common goals as an executive team.

What do you believe you bring to your company?

I have the ability to look strategically, to challenge the status quo. I look beyond what we currently do as a business to find the best results for ASSA ABLOY Australia and how to benefit our customers moving forward. I am extremely dedicated to the business and driven to succeed; I take my responsibility seriously and feel that I bring a high level of integrity, energy and commitment to the organisation.

What do you attribute your success in the workforce to?

My success has come from hard work and my commitment to the organisation, being prepared to listen and to learn about different areas of ASSA ABLOY Australia’s business. My commitment to ASSA ABLOY Australia is to build a successful organisation for staff and our customers. My philosophy is that it’s not about a particular individual’s success, but the ability to develop successful teams within the business.

What do you think the workforce will look like in the future? The office environment will become more and more streamlined as time and technology moves forward, which will see many administrative duties automated. My hope is that this will allow people to become even more focused on the service given to customers. Gender is always under scrutiny, if everyone focused on the best person for the role, regardless of gender, more businesses would benefit, as I truly believe this gives more balance to management and other organisations.

My role at Outsource Institute of Technology (OIT) requires the overall management of the success and the strategic direction of OIT’s training services, personnel and financial matters. This includes acting as a support to the management team and employees to ensure that our organisational goals are met in accordance with our Board’s strategic vision.

I am also responsible for liaising with government bodies with regards to funding, external clientele

such as other training providers, national and international businesses and community organisations concerning their learning and development needs.

What led you to your current role?

Previously I managed a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) within the Community Services Sector. I learnt a lot during my tenure with this organisation in regards to the challenges faced by an RTO with such a diversified service portfolio. When the opportunity presented itself to manage OIT what appealed to me was the prospect of working with another RTO with a completely different service offering of predominantly business and engineering qualifications.

What do you believe you bring to your company?

I believe I bring a unique skill set acquired throughout my varied employment history coupled with a personal management philosophy of allowing staff to do their job without the need to micro-manage: I adopt an ‘open-door’ policy. I also believe that it is important to have a culture where employees are comfortable learning. One of our favourite terms is ‘continuous improvement’. I ensure my team are given permission to make mistakes (so as long as they are justifiable) and provide an opportunity for personal and professional development.

What do you attribute your success in the workforce to?

I attribute my success in the workforce to determination, dedication, openness and equity. I am also a supporter of maintaining a strong customer service philosophy both internally and externally. It has also been important to remain empathic - having a willingness to walk in “someone else’s shoes” has afforded me the opportunity to view things from other people’s perspective when making business decisions.

What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before you ventured out into the workforce?

I wish that someone had advised me to really believe in myself and trust my own gut instinct a little more - you know more than you think you know, have belief in your own abilities.

Pires said.

Apelt said.

BTP’S BUSINESS LEADERS’ JOURNEY TO SUCCESSThis year the BTP Insider profiles business leaders within the BTP community to identify the factors behind their success and the challenges they have faced in their journey to the top.

This summer the BTP Insider talks to women in leadership, to identify what it takes for women to reach the top echelons of business. We talk to Jennifer Townend, CEO of Outsource Institute of Technology and Narelle Read, Director of Customer Service at ASSA ABLOY Australia.
