Safety information
General
Only use the power supply unitincluded with the product. Using
anunauthorised power supply willinvalidate your guarantee and
maydamage the telephone. The itemnumber for the power supply unit
is 872264.
For the handset use only approvedrechargeable battery pack.
Under no circumstances should non-rechargeable batteries be used.
Using unapproved batteries willinvalidate your guarantee and
maydamage the telephone.
Radio signals transmitted betweenthe handset and base may
causeinterference to some hearing aids.
Do not dismantle the handset or base station. This could expose
youto high voltages or other risks.Contact the Helpline for
repairs.
Never dispose of batteries in a fire.There is a serious risk of
explosionand/or the release of highly toxicchemicals.
Cleaning
Simply clean the handset and basestation with a damp (not wet)
cloth,or an antistatic wipe. Never usehousehold polish as this will
damagethe product. Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a static
shock.
Environmental
Do not expose to direct sunlight.
The product may heat up when the batteries are being recharged.
This is normal. However, to avoiddamage we recommend that you do
not place the product onantique/veneered wood.
Do not expose your product to fire, explosive or other
hazardousconditions.
There is a slight chance that yourphone could be damaged by
anelectrical storm. We recommendthat you unplug the power
andtelephone line cord for the duration of the storm.

Setting upFollow these steps to set up your Freestyle 65 ready
for use.
Plan the location
Situate your Freestyle 65 close enoughto the mains power socket
and telephonesocket so that the cables will reach.
Make sure it is at least 1 metre awayfrom other electrical
products to avoidinterference.
Do not situate the product in thebathroom or other humid
areas.
Your Freestyle 65 works by sending andreceiving radio signals
between the baseunit and the handset.
The strength of the signal depends onwhere you site the base
unit and howthe aerial is deployed.
The higher the base unit is located, the better. An upstairs
room is ideal.
Your product can be wall mounted, formore information see page
44.

recommendyou pull out when on a call to obtainthe best signal and
reception available.

Note
Do not connect the telephone line cordto the phone socket until
the handsetis fully charged. This will prevent therisk of the phone
being answeredbefore the batteries are charged, whichmay prevent
them from reachingmaximum capacity.
Note
When fully charged and in goodcondition, the handset will
provide upto 7 hours talktime or 72 hoursstandby.
If the handset battery is running low,the light on the handset
will flashevery 10-15 seconds.
If you are making a call and thehandset battery is running low
youwill hear a warning tone every 10-15 seconds.
Place the handset on the base unit torecharge.
However, the charge capacity ofrechargeable batteries will
reduce withtime as they wear out, so reducing thetalk/standby time
of the handset.Eventually they will need to be replaced.New
batteries can be obtained fromthe Helpline. Please see page 39
forinstructions on how to install a newbattery pack.
To get the longest possible life fromyour battery, leave the
handset off thebase unit for a few hours each day.
4 Charge the handset
When you first use your Freestyle 65,the rechargeable battery in
thehandset needs charging for 24 hours.
Place the handset on the base unit,ensuring the contacts are
touching.
The red CHARGING light will come on.
The charging light will remainconstantly lit while the handset
isplaced on the base unit, even when thehandset batteries are fully
charged.
3 Connect the base unitpower supply to a powersocket
The power supply unit must remainplugged in all the time.

5 When the handset hasbeen charged for 24 hoursplug the other
end of theline cord into thetelephone wall socket
6 To set the day and time
The message counter on thebase unit will flash between 0and C
until the day and timeare set.
The day and time must be setusing the Freestyle 65 handset.
Your Freestyle 65 automaticallyadds the day and time to
allmessages and memos received.
When you first switch thepower on, the clock is set toSunday,
12.01pm. You canchange the day and time asrequired.
Press the SCREEN/MENUbutton, on the Freestyle 65handset. The
main menuannouncements are
automatically announcedthrough the handset earpiecewhen the
SCREEN/MENUbutton is pressed.
Press the 0 button. The promptwill announce, “To set day andtime
press ✱, to confirm dayand time press #”.
(Please note that if you pressthe # button this allows you
tocheck the day and time.)
Press the ✱ button. The promptwill announce, “Please enter
newday and time after the tone”.
After the tone enter the day,followed by the time using the24
hour clock.
1 = Sun, 2 = Mon, 3 = Tues, 4 = Wed, 5 = Thur, 6 = Fri, 7 =
Sat.
For example:
1 1415 = Sunday 2.15pm.
Or
5 0915 = Thursday 9.15am.
You will then hear your settingconfirmed.
Press the SCREEN/MENUbutton to return the handset tostandby.

Using your Freestyle 65
Making and receiving calls
To make an external call
Press the buttons in the ordershown:
Lift the handset off the baseunit.
Press the TALK button.
The IN USE light on the baseunit begins to flash and thelight on
the handset comes on.
Listen for the dialling tone.
Dial the number you want.
To end a call
Press the TALK button.
Or
Replace the handset on thebase unit.
To receive a call
When the phone rings:
If your handset is on the baseunit, simply pick it up toanswer
the call.
Or
If your handset is off the baseunit then the handset light
willflash, press the TALK buttonto answer the call.
Note
The handset range is up to 250 metresfrom the base unit in ideal
conditions.If you start to go out of range whileusing the phone,
you will hear warningbeeps. Move closer to the base unit.If you do
not move back into rangeyour call may be disconnected.
YourFreestyle 65 automatically scans theavailable radio channels
and selectsthe one with the best quality reception.

An Inductive Coupler has been builtinto the handset to improve
soundquality for people using hearing aids.Switch your hearing aid
to T andadjust the position of the handset untilyou get the best
reception.
To redial the last numbercalled
Press the TALK button andwait for the dialling tone.
Press the REDIAL button. Thenumber is dialled automatically.
Last number redial
Your Freestyle 65 stores the last numbercalled which enables
quick and easyredialling. A redial number can be nolonger than 32
digits.
Note
Your Freestyle 65 handset uses acompact aerial which should be
pulledout when on a call to obtain the bestsignal and reception
available.
To switch Secrecy on and off
During a call press and releasethe SCREEN/MENU button.
Your caller will be put on holdand both you and the callerwill
hear music until theSCREEN/MENU button ispressed again.
The handset light will flash.
You can now talk to someone inthe room without your
callerhearing you.
Press and release theSCREEN/MENU button againto return to your
caller.
Secrecy/Music on hold
When on a call you can talk to someonein the same room, without
your callerhearing.

Stored numbers can includeswitchboard and network services
thatuse the ✱ and # buttons as well asPAUSE and RECALL
functions.
Directory
You can store ten of your most frequentlyused telephone numbers
in thedirectory. Please note that the numberscan be no longer than
20 digits long.
Note
You can mix manual and memorydialling as required, for example,
you candial the area code 020 8304 from thedirectory and then
complete thenumber manually.
To store a number in thedirectory
Press the DIRECTORY button.
Enter the location numberbetween 0 and 9, under whichyou want to
store the number.
Enter the telephone numberyou want to store.
Press the DIRECTORY buttonto confirm.
You will hear a confirmationtone.

To insert a pause in adirectory number
With some switchboards, afterdialling the access code youmay
have to wait for a momentwhile the switchboard picks upan outside
line.
If so, press the REDIAL buttonto insert a pause after
enteringthe switchboard (PBX) accessnumber and before enteringthe
telephone number.

To dial a number in thedirectory
Press the TALK button.
Press the DIRECTORY button.
Enter the location numberbetween 0 and 9, under whichthe number
is stored.
The number is dialledautomatically.

To delete stored numbers
Press the DIRECTORY button.
Enter the location number,from 0 to 9, that you want
todelete.
Press the DIRECTORY button.
The stored number has beendeleted.
Alternatively:
Any existing number stored in the directory can beoverwritten by
entering a new number under the samelocation. Simply follow
thesteps under the storing numberssections previously shown.
Note
There is a directory label included onthe reverse side of your
handset. You can use this to keep a record of whichlocation number
you have used foreach telephone number.
Remove the battery cover by pressingdown on top of the lid and
slide thecover off.
To remove the directory label frominside the battery cover lid,
push up the directory label with your thumb as shown.

Note
You cannot page the handset while itis being used on a call. An
incomingcall will override a page call and thehandset will ring as
normal.
If additional handsets are registeredto the Freestyle 65 base
unit then allhandsets will ring when paged.
To page the handset
Press the PAGE button on thebase unit.
The handset will ring.
You can stop paging at anytime by pressing the PAGEbutton on the
base unit or anybuttons on the handset.
Pressing the TALK button willnot only stop the paging butalso
seize the line. Press theTALK button a second time toclear the
line.
Paging will continue to ring for approximately one minute.If the
paging is not answeredafter this time your handsetwill return to
standby.
Paging
You can page the handset from thebase unit to alert a handset
user thatthey are wanted or to locate a missinghandset. However,
paging calls cannotbe answered by a handset.
Base ringer volume
To adjust the base ringervolume
There are 3 levels to choosefrom, HIGH, LOW and OFF.
1=HIGH; 2=LOW and 3=OFF.The default setting is HIGH.
Press the DIRECTORY button.
Press the # button.
Enter the setting you want, 1-3.
Press the DIRECTORY buttonto confirm the setting.
You will hear a confirmationtone.
You will also hear a samplering of the base ringer at levels1
and 2.

To use Call Waiting
You can answer the second call,without disconnecting yourfirst
caller, by pressing the Rbutton. The first caller will beput on
hold.
When you have spoken to thesecond caller you can returnto the
first caller by pressingthe R button again. You canswitch back and
forth betweenthe 2 calls without disconnectingeither if you
wish.
If you wish to disconnect thefirst call, press the TALKbutton
after speaking to thefirst caller.
The handset will then ring.Press the TALK button againand
continue with the secondcaller.
The second caller will only becharged for their call from
themoment you answer and notwhile they are waiting for yourinitial
contact.
If an incoming call arrives while you arealready engaged on a
telephone call,you will hear a soft beep every 5 seconds(this beep
is not audible to the personyou are speaking to).
Instead of the engaged tone, the secondcaller will hear an
announcement tohold as you are aware that there is asecond
call.
Note
To use Call Waiting you will need tosubscribe to the Service
from yournetwork provider. A quarterly fee ispayable.

Message display on the base station
Your Freestyle 65 can digitally recordup to 13 minutes of
messages, witheach message lasting a maximum of 3minutes. As well
as recording incomingmessages, you can record memos forother
users.
You can operate your Freestyle 65from:
• The base unit.
• The handset.
• Remotely from any externalTouchtoneTM telephone.
Your Freestyle 65 comes with two pre-recorded outgoing
messages,Answer and Record or Answer Only,but if you wish you can
record your own.
You will need to set the day and time (if you have not already
done so)so that you will know when eachmessage was received, see
page 9.
The table opposite provides anexplanation of what is shown on
thebase station display.

Answer delay
Answer delay sets the number of timesyour Freestyle 65 will ring
before theanswer machine picks up your call andstarts playing the
outgoing message.The default setting is for the answeringmachine to
answer after 6 rings. Youcan change this setting to between
2-9rings.

To switch the answeringmachine ON/OFF
Press and release theANSWER ON/OFF button toswitch ON or
OFF.
If you hear “Answer on, youroutgoing message is....” the
answering machine isswitched on and is ready toanswer incoming
calls andrecord any messages, unlessAnswer Only is selected whichis
an advisory announcementonly, so that the machine willnot record an
incomingmessage.
The display on the base unitshows the number of messagesstored
in the memory.
If you hear “Answer off”the answering machine isswitched
off.
The display on the base unitwill flash between a dash andthe
number of messages savedin the memory.
To adjust the base unitloudspeaker volume
The loudspeaker volumeranges from 0-9 plus H, where0 is Off and
H is the maximumlevel. The default level is 5.
Press VOL + on the base toincrease the volume.
Press VOL - on the base todecrease the volume.
If you adjust the volume whenthe answering machine is notbeing
used, a beep sounds ateach press. When the volumereaches its
highest or lowestlevels two beeps will sound.

Audible Message alert
When new messages have beenreceived, your Freestyle 65 will
beepevery 10 seconds (when audiblemessage is switched ON). The
volumeof the beep is at the volume you haveset for the loudspeaker.
The defaultsetting is OFF.
To switch audible messagealert ON or OFF
When the answering machine isin the idle mode:
Press and hold the � SKIPbutton on the base unit tochange the
setting.
The prompt will announce“Message alert on/off”
asappropriate.

When you hear the setting youwant, do not press the SKIP �button
again. After a shortdelay your chosen setting willbe announced.

To record your own Answerand Record outgoing message
You can record your ownAnswer and Recordoutgoing message to
useinstead of the pre-recordedmessage already available.Your
outgoing message can be up to 3 minutes long. Yourown outgoing
message willreplace the Answer andRecord pre-recorded
outgoingmessage, but it is possible toreinstate it later if you
wish(see page 24).
Pick up the handset.
Press the SCREEN/MENUbutton. You will hear the mainmenu
announcement from thehandset earpiece.
Press the 8 button for theoutgoing message menu.
To record your own Answerand Record outgoing message,press the 3
button. Theprompt will announce, “Pleasespeak after the tone. To
endrecording, press #”.
After the tone, speak youroutgoing message into thehandset.
Press # when youhave finished. You will hear along beep,
(throughoutrecording r will flash on thebase unit display).

Outgoing messages
The outgoing message is the messagea caller first hears when the
answeringmachine picks up their call. YourFreestyle 65 comes with 2
pre-recordedoutgoing messages to choose from asfollows:
Answer and Record
Your Freestyle 65 has a pre-set Answerand Record outgoing
message thatallows your caller to leave a message.
“Hello, your call cannot be taken at themoment, so please leave
your messageafter the tone”.
However, you can record your ownAnswer and Record outgoing
message ifyou wish, see ‘To record your own Answerand Record
outgoing message’, opposite.
Answer Only
Your Freestyle 65 will play a pre-recorded Answer Only
outgoingmessage but will not allow your callerto leave a
message.
“Hello, your call cannot be taken at themoment and you cannot
leave a message,so please call later”.
However, you can record your ownAnswer Only outgoing message if
youwish, see ‘To record your own AnswerOnly outgoing message’, page
21.

When you have accessed your answeringmachine, you can operate it

Time saver
The Time saver feature is useful if youare out and want to ring
in and check ifyou have received any new messages.
If your answering machine is set totime saver you can check
whether youhave new messages or not before youranswering machine
actually answersyour call. If you have new messagesyour answering
machine will answerafter 2 rings, if you do not have anynew
messages, it will not answer until 6 rings. This enables you to
hang upbefore you are connected, saving youtime and the cost of a
call.

If you enter your security PIN codeincorrectly, after the second
attempt,your Freestyle 65 will announce:“Thank you for calling” and
will thenhang up.

Transferring calls
You can transfer calls between handsetsthat are registered to
the base unit.

How many telephones can you have?
All items of telephone equipment havea Ringer Equivalence Number
(REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items which may be
connected toany one telephone line. Your Freestyle65 has a REN of
1. A total REN of 4 isallowed. If the total REN of 4 isexceeded,
the telephones may not ring.With different telephone types there
isno guarantee of ringing, even when theREN is less than 4.

provide upto 7 hours talktime or 72 hoursstandby.
If the handset battery is running low,the light on the handset
will flashevery 10-15 seconds.
If you are making a call and thehandset battery is running low
youwill hear a warning tone every 10-15 seconds.
Place the handset on the base unit torecharge.
However, the charge capacity ofrechargeable batteries will
reduce withtime as they wear out, so reducing thetalk/standby time
of the handset.Eventually they will need to be replaced.New
batteries can be obtained fromthe Helpline.
To get the longest possible life fromyour battery, leave the
handset off thebase unit for a few hours each day.
Call security
Your Freestyle 65 has its own digitalsecurity code that prevents
othercordless phone owners from using yourphone line. This ensures
that you arecharged only for calls using your phone.However, all
approved cordless phonesuse radio signals to communicatebetween the
base unit and cordlesshandset units. It is therefore possible
that
your conversations could be overheardby other people, on their
cordlessphones, or on ordinary radios that usethe same radio
frequencies.
As this problem applies equally to allsimilar cordless phones
currentlyavailable in the UK, call privacy cannotbe guaranteed.
However, the securitycoding prevents unauthorised use ofyour
line.
Switchboard compatibility
This product is intended for use withinthe UK for connection to
the publictelephone network and compatibleswitchboards, which
support tone andpulse dialling and timed break recall. If in doubt
please consult your serviceprovider.

Wall mounting
For the best operating conditions,try to place the base unit
away fromlarge metal objects and otherelectrical appliances.
Drill 2 holes for the screws and insertthe wall-plugs provided
(if required).
Drive the screws into the wall, leavingabout 4mm free on which
to mountthe bracket and base unit.
Make sure that the power supply andthe telephone cables are
connectedto the base unit, then fit the cablesinto the channels on
the bottom of thebase unit.
Attach the base unit by hooking it overthe screws protruding
from the wall.
Your Freestyle 65 can be wall-mountedby removing the desk
bracket.
To remove, just squeeze the bracket inwith thumbs and lift off
as shown.

Note
Before you wall-mount your Freestyle 65, check that:
• the wall can support the weight ofthe base unit and
handset;
• you are not drilling into any hiddenwiring or pipework;
• the power supply cable will reachfrom the mains power socket
to yourwall mounting position;
• the position you choose leaves enoughspace so that the base
unit is clearof any obstruction on the wall, suchas a shelf or
cupboard. Room shouldbe left so that the handset can beplaced on
charge without touchingany obstructions.
