For the handset use only approvedNickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)rechargeable batteries. Never useother batteries or conventionalalkaline batteries. Recommendedbatteries should have a powerrating of 550mAh 1.2V. Batteries areavailable from the Freelance XD500 Helpline on 08706 058 047.
Do not open the handset, basestation or charger. This couldexpose you to high voltages orother risks. Contact the FreelanceXD 500 Helpline for all repairs.
Radio signals transmitted betweenthe handset and base may causeinterference to hearing aids.
It is recommended that advicefrom a qualified expert be soughtbefore using this product in thevicinity of emergency/ intensivecare medical equipment.
It is recommended that if you havea pacemaker fitted, you checkwith a medical expert before usingthis product.
Your product may interfere withother electrical equipment, e.g. TVand radio sets, clock/alarms andcomputers if placed too close. It isrecommended that you place yourproduct at least one metre awayfrom such appliances to minimiseany risk of interference.
Never dispose of the batteries in a fire. There is a serious risk ofexplosion and/or the release ofhighly toxic chemicals.
Cleaning
Simply clean the handset and basewith a damp (not wet) cloth, or ananti-static wipe.
Never use household polish as thiswill damage the product.
Never use a dry cloth as this maycause a static shock.
Environmental
Do not expose to direct sunlight.
The product may heat up whenthe batteries are being recharged.This is normal. However, werecommend that you do not placethe product on antique/veneeredwood to avoid damage.
Do not stand your product oncarpets or other surfaces whichgenerate fibres, or place it inlocations preventing the free flowof air over its surfaces.
Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do notuse it in damp conditions, such as bathrooms.
Do not expose your product tofire, explosive or other hazardousconditions.
There is a slight chance that yourphone could be damaged by anelectrical storm. We recommendthat you unplug the power andtelephone line cord for the durationof the storm.
Battery performance
The charge capacity ofrechargeable batteries will reducewith time as they wear out, soreducing talk/standby time of the handset. Eventually they willneed to be replaced. Newbatteries can be obtained fromthe Helpline on 08706 058 047.
After charging your handset forthe first time, subsequentcharging time for the batteries isapproximately 6-8 hours a day.Batteries and case may becomewarm during charging, this isnormal.
Under ideal conditions, thehandset batteries should giveabout 12 hours talktime or 150hours standby on a single charge.(This does not mean you canunplug the base station or leaveit for this length of time withoutcharge.)
Please note, however, that newNiMH batteries do not reach fullcapacity until they have been innormal use for several days.
Setting upFollow these steps to set up your Freelance XD 500 ready for use.
Plan the location
Situate your product close enoughto the telephone and mains powersupply so that the cables will reach.
Make sure it is at least 1 metreaway from other electrical productsto avoid interference.
1 Connect the powersupply cable
Plug the power supplycable into the power socketon your Freelance XD 500base. The green Power/InUse light comes on.
2 Plug the power supplyadaptor into the wallsocket
Your Freelance XD 500will announce the defaultsettings of the answeringmachine. See page 17.
Do not connect thetelephone line cord to thephone socket until yourhandset is fully charged.This will prevent the riskof the phone beinganswered before thebatteries are charged.Answering the phonebefore the batteries arefully charged may preventit from reaching itsoptimum capacity.
Note
The base station mustbe plugged into themains power socket atall times.
Under no circumstances shouldnon-rechargeable batteries beused. Only use the approvedbatteries. Using unapprovedbatteries will invalidate yourguarantee and may damage thetelephone.
3 Insert the batteries
Insert the two batteriessupplied, as indicated onthe markings inside thebattery compartment andslide the batterycompartment shut. Thehandset display will showHANDSET 1. This meansone handset is registeredto the base. (If you havepurchased the FreelanceXD 500 Twin, Trio or Quadthe additional handset(s)will show HANDSET 2/3/4.
4 Charge the handsetbatteries for at least16 hours
Before you use yourFreelance XD 500 for thefirst time it is important tohave the handset batteriesfully charged. Place thehandset on the base. You will hear a long beep.The red charging light on the base will come onand the battery. Leave the handset to chargecontinuously for at least 16hours to reach full charge.
Note
The charging light will remainlit even when the batteries arefully charged.
Battery levels
Battery low warningIf the handset battery symbol isempty, you will hear a warningbeep every 10 seconds, you willneed to recharge your handsetbefore you can use it.

Out of range warningThe symbol on your handsetdisplay indicates when you are in range of the base station. If the symbol flashes and youhear a warning beep, you areout of range and will need tomove closer to the base station.
Signal StrengthThe Freelance XD 500 has arange of up to 300 metresoutdoors and up to 50 metresindoors. This is in idealconditions. The range will bereduced when there is no clearline of sight between the baseand the handset. Thick stonewalls can severely affect therange.
If you have purchased the Freelance XD 500 Twin, Trio orQuad packs insert the batteries into your additional handsets asshown on page 14.
6 Connect and chargethe Freelance XD 500handsets
Plug the power supplycable with the redconnector into the powersocket on your FreelanceXD 500 charger.
Plug the power supplyadaptor into the wall socket.
Place the handset onto thecharger. The red charginglight will come on. Leavethe handset to chargecontinuously for at least 16hours to reach full charge.
If the day and time is enteredincorrectly, the prompt willannounce, “Incorrect, please setagain”. Enter the correct settingwithin 15 seconds otherwise thehandset will return to standbymode. If the day and time isentered incorrectly three timesthe handset will return to standby.
For example:
1 1415 = Sunday 2.15pm.
Or
5 0915 = Thursday9.15am.
You will then hear yoursetting confirmed.
Press the DEL buttontwice to return thehandset to standby.

If you subscribe to a Caller DisplayService you can see who is callingyou on your handset display, as wellas the time and date of their call.
If you have stored a name to gowith the number in your handsetphonebook, the name will bedisplayed instead.
Please ensure that you have storedthe full telephone number, includingthe area code, otherwise the namewill not match the number storedin the phonebook.
Whether you take a call or not, the caller’s details are stored in theCalls list. You can display, scrollthrough and dial numbers on the listand copy them into the phonebook.
Caller information not available
With some incoming calls thetelephone number of the caller isnot available and cannot thereforebe displayed.
In this case, your Freelance XD 500provides you with some explanatoryinformation about the type of callreceived. This will be one of thefollowing.
UNAVAILA – The number isunavailable.
WITHHELD – The caller has withheldtheir number.
RINGBACK – Ringback call.
OPERATOR – The call has beenmade via the operator.
The Calls list contains the telephonenumbers of your last 20 callers. Newcalls in the Calls list are indicatedby the flashing symbol. If acall is received when the Calls listis full then the oldest entry will bedeleted automatically.

Press the DOWN button toenter the Calls list. The
symbol is displayed.
Use the UP or DOWNbutton to scroll backwardsand forwards through theCalls list.

Setting up and personalising youranswering machine
Your Freelance XD 500 candigitally record up to 12 minutesof messages, with each messagelasting a maximum of 3 minutes. As well as recording incomingmessages, you can record memosfor other users. You can operateyour Freelance XD 500 from:• The base unit.• The handset.• Remotely from any external
TouchtoneTM telephone.
Your Freelance XD 500 comeswith two pre-recorded outgoingmessages, Answer and Recordor Answer Only, but if you wishyou can record your own.
You will need to set the day andtime (if you have not already done so) so that you will knowwhen each message was received,see page 16.
Press and release theANSWER ON/OFF buttonto switch ON or OFF.
If you hear “Answer on,your outgoing message is....”the answering machine isswitched on and is readyto answer incoming callsand record any messages,unless Answer Only isselected.
Answer Only is anadvisory announcementonly, so that the machinewill not record an incomingmessage.

The display on the baseunit shows the number ofmessages stored in thememory.

The loudspeaker volumeranges from 0-9 plus H,where 0 is Off and H is themaximum level. The defaultlevel is 5.

Answer delay sets the number oftimes your Freelance XD 500 willring before the answer machinepicks up your call and startsplaying the outgoing message.The default setting is for theanswering machine to answerafter 6 rings. You can change thissetting to between 2-9 rings.

Outgoing messages
The outgoing message is themessage a caller first hears whenthe answering machine picks uptheir call. Your Freelance XD 500comes with 2 pre-recordedoutgoing messages to choose fromas follows:
Your Freelance XD 500 has a pre-set Answer and Record outgoingmessage that allows your caller toleave a message.
“Hello, your call cannot be taken at the moment, so please leave yourmessage after the tone”.
However, you can record your ownAnswer and Record outgoingmessage if you wish, see ‘To recordyour own Answer and Recordoutgoing message’, opposite.

Your Freelance XD 500 will play a pre-recorded Answer Onlyoutgoing message but will not allowyour caller to leave a message.
“Hello, your call cannot be taken atthe moment and you cannot leave amessage, so please call later”.
However, you can record your ownAnswer Only outgoing message if you wish, see ‘To record your ownAnswer Only outgoing message’,page 38.

Pick up the handset.
Press the � button twice.

Whilst your outgoingmessage is being playedyou will hear a confirmationbeep, followed by thevoice prompt announcingthe default pre-recordedoutgoing message.
Press and hold the DEL button to return thehandset to standby.
To skip forward andbackward throughmessages (including fast playback)
During playback:
Press the SKIP � buttonto skip forwards to thenext message.
If you press and hold theSKIP � button the currentmessage will be played at11/2 times the speed (fastplayback).

To delete an individualmessage
Press the red DELETEbutton on the base unitduring message playback.
The prompt will announce,“Message deleted”.
The message is not deletedyet, but at the end ofplayback when there is an8 second countdownfollowed by a confirmationtone. Let the countdownreach 0 and all the selectedmessages are deleted andthe remaining messagesare saved.
When all messages havebeen played the promptwill announce, “End ofmessages. To delete allmessages, press delete”.The display counts downfrom 8-0.
During the countdownpress the red DELETEbutton and the prompt willannounce, “All messagesdeleted”. At the end of thecountdown there will be aconfirmation tone.

Press the STOP buttonduring the 8-0 countdown. All messages will be savedincluding any marked fordeletion.

Call screening
You can let your answering machinepick up a call, even if you are in.This allows you to identify thecaller and decide whether to takethe call.
Make sure the volume on the base unit is set to an audible level, see page 35. Allow the incomingcall to be answered by your Freelance XD 500 answeringmachine as normal. You will hearthe caller begin to leave a message.
To screen a call from thebase unit
While listening to yourcaller leaving a message,via the base unitloudspeaker, you candecide to take the call bypressing the TALK buttonon the handset.
Or
If the handset is restingon the base unit and youdecide to take the call, liftthe handset and speak tothe caller. Recording willstop automatically.
Using the Freelance XD 500answering machine via the handset
You can use your Freelance XD500 for a variety of functions: tolisten to your messages; delete,skip forward or backward; recorda memo or new outgoing message,and to screen incoming calls.
Note
If you try to access the answeringmachine via the handset when the base unit is in use the handset display will flashTAM BUSY.
Accessing your messagesfrom the handset
Use the table on page 46for instructions on whichbuttons to press to accessthe answering machinefrom the handset.
Press the � button twice.The handset will beep andannounce the main menuoptions.
The display will flash TAM MENU and the handsetwill beep.

A personal memo can be recordedon your Freelance XD 500 and leftas a message for another user.Memos can be of any length, up tothe maximum recording capacity(12 minutes), but you should try tokeep them short to allow time forrecording incoming messages.
Press the 7 button. The prompt will announce,“Please speak after the tone.To end recording presssquare”. Speak your memointo the handset. Thedisplay will show r flashing.
Press the # button to endrecording.
Your memo is now storedand can be played backlater. Memos are stored inthe same way as incomingmessages, and the messagecounter on the base unitwill increase by 1.

Call screening/Callintercept
You can let your answeringmachine pick up a call, even if youare in. This allows you to identifythe caller and decide whether totake the call.
Make sure the volume is set to an audible level, see page 35. Allowthe incoming call to be answered byyour Freelance XD 500 answeringmachine as normal. You will hearthe caller begin to leave a message.
To screen a call via thehandset (when thehandset is off the baseunit)
When your Freelance XD500 starts to record anincoming message, the INUSE light will flash. Thedisplay will show SCREEN?
Press the � button. Youcan hear the caller on thehandset.

To interrupt recording and talk to your caller,press the TALK button.Recording is stopped.
You can turn your Freelance XD500 answering machine on and offand listen to your messages fromany TouchtoneTM telephone. To protect your privacy, messagescan only be accessed by enteringa 3-digit security code.
The pre-set code is 000 and can bechanged. If you change the code itis advisable that you make a noteof it somewhere safe.
To confirm your securitycode press #.

If you go out and forget to turn your answeringmachine on you can switchit on remotely.

Let the phone ring for 20rings until you hear youroutgoing message.

The Time saver feature is useful ifyou are out and want to ring in andcheck if you have received any newmessages.
If your answering machine is set totime saver you can check whetheryou have new messages or notbefore your answering machineactually answers your call. If youhave new messages your answeringmachine will answer after 2 rings,if you do not have any newmessages, it will not answer until6 rings. This enables you to hangup before you are connected, savingyou time and the cost of a call.
Press the 7 button within8 seconds. You will hear “Answer On” and youranswering machine willnow be switched on toanswer incoming calls.

To check for messages
Dial your phone numberand wait.
When you hear youroutgoing message, pressthe ✱ button on yourphone. You will hear, “Pleaseenter your security code”.
Enter your security code.
If you have new messages,you will hear, “You have ‘n’new messages”.
Your messages will beplayed.
If you have no newmessages, you will hear,“You have no new messages,to hear main menu press 1”.

If you enter your security PINcode incorrectly, after thesecond attempt, your FreelanceXD 500 will announce: “Thankyou for calling” and will thenhang up.
When you have accessed youranswering machine, you can operateit using the keypad numbers on thephone you are using.
The Remote access main menu
The main menu lets youoperate a range ofanswering machinefunctions. To register a handset toanother base
At the base:
Press and hold the basePAGE button for at least10 seconds, until you hearthe validation tone (twobeeps), then release thebutton.
At the handset:
Press the � button toenter the menu.
Use the DOWN button to scroll to REGISTER andpress the � button.
Up to 5 handsets can beregistered and operated from anyone Freelance XD 500 base. Thisallows you to make internal callsbetween two handsets while athird is making an external call.
Each handset can be registered on up to 4 bases.
Each additional handset youpurchase must be registered with the base. (If you have purchasedTwin/Trio/Quad, these will alreadybe pre-registered.)
Your handset supplied is pre-registered as Handset 1 to itsbase (Base 1).
Note
Remember to charge batteries of new handsets for at least 16hours before use.
If the display shows NOT REG andthe symbol is flashing, yourhandset is not yet registered withthe base.

Three-way conversation
You can talk to one externalcaller and another internalcaller at the same time onyour handset.
Please note that you canonly use this feature withthe Freelance XD 500handsets.
During a call with anexternal caller:
Press the INT button.Your caller is put on holdand you hear a tone.
Enter the number of the handset you want totransfer the call to.
When the handset isanswered, press and holdthe # button for about 3 seconds. You can nowstart your three-wayconversation. (If theinternal handset user doesnot answer your call, pressthe INT button to returnto your external caller).

When on a three-way call the callcan only be cleared by the handsetwhich set it up.
After a time, you may find that thehandset batteries run out of chargemore quickly. This is a standardsign of wear and the batteries willneed replacing. See page 14.
No display appears
The batteries may be flat or dead.Recharge or replace the batteries.The handset may be switched off.
No dial tone
Is the telephone line cord pluggedinto the phone socket?
Check that:
• The base station is connected tothe mains power and switched on.
You cannot link up with the base station
Is the display flashing ?
Check that:
• The mains power cable is connected at the base andswitched on.
• You are in range of the basestation.
• The batteries are not low or flat.• You are connected to the correct
base if you are using more thanone base station. See page 28.
No ring on the handset
The ringer volume may be switchedto off. To adjust the ringer volumeon the handset. See page 24.
Check that:
• The base station is plugged intothe phone socket.
• The base station is plugged intothe mains power and switched on.
Buzzing noise on my radio, TV,computer or hearing aid
Sometimes, your Freelance XD500 can interfere with otherelectrical equipment if it is placedtoo close.
It is recommended that you placeyour Freelance XD 500 at least onemetre away from such appliancesto avoid any risk of interference.
• The power adaptor is properlyplugged into the charger.
• Your handset has slotted correctlyinto the charger.
• The batteries are correctly fittedinto the handset.
• The base is plugged into aworking socket and that thesocket is switched on.
• You are using the correct poweradaptor:Freelance XD 500 base stationpower supply – Item Code is:005391.Freelance XD 500 charger powersupply – Item Code is: 003313.

How many telephones can youhave?
All items of telephone equipmenthave a Ringer EquivalenceNumber (REN), which is used tocalculate the number of itemswhich may be connected to anyone telephone line. YourFreelance XD 500 has a REN of 1.A total REN of 4 is allowed, if thetotal REN of 4 is exceeded, thetelephones may not ring.
With different telephone typesthere is no guarantee of ringing,even when the REN is less than 4.

Only use recommended NiMHbatteries 2 x AAA, 550mAh 1.2V.
Switchboard compatibility
This product is intended for usewithin the UK for connection tothe public telephone network andcompatible switchboards, whichsupport tone dialling and timedbreak recall. If in doubt pleaseconsult your service provider.
Switchboard external lineaccess code
You may need to enter an accesscode (e.g. 9) in order to get anoutside line. So that the switchboardhas time to pick up an outside line,you may also need to add a Pauseafter the access code.
This is used whenconnected to certainswitchboards and forsome BT Calling Featuresor those services availablevia your network provider.

To automatically insert a pause after an accesscode
With some switchboardsit may be helpful to dial apause after entering theswitchboard access code,e.g. 9, 11 etc. to enableyou to get an outside line.
This feature automaticallyinserts a pause betweenthe access code and thetelephone number thatyou have entered in thePhonebook. However, forthis feature to work youmust still enter the accesscode at the front of thetelephone number whenstoring in the Phonebook.
