WELCOMEWelcome to the 2013 BACARDI Sailing Week International regattas. Competitors from as far as Australia and as close as our own backyard will be among the numerous sailors that will compete in our annual events: BACARDI Miami Sailing Week and BACARDI Newport Sailing Week presented by EFG Bank.

BMSW regatta is scheduled for March 3-9, 2013, with six participating one design classes: the Star Class, competing for the 85th annual BACARDI Cup, will be joined by the Melges 20, Melges 24, Viper 640 and J/80 classes. We are also thrilled to announce that this year the hottest one design boat on the market, the J/70 will be joining the BACARDI Sailing Weeks. They will all be racing in three different courses on the beautiful waters of Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove, Miami. The event will feature a week long of activities from award ceremonies, cocktail parties and cultural exhibits which will gather together both the sailors and the local community. A number of local sailing organizations will put forth a collaborative effort to support the regatta. For 2013 the organizing committee is forecasting an increase in participation from local

and international sailing enthusiasts bringing the boat count over 200 and participants over 750.

Riding on the success of the Miami regatta, organizers could not have asked for a better place to host the 2nd BACARDI Sailing Week event: Newport, R.I. is in fact considered by many as “the sailing capital of the world”. This world-renowned venue provides for an incredible backdrop to the close on the water competition that BACARDI Sailing Week is proud to support. The event will take place in June 2013. Featuring the same world-class performance boats seen in Miami competitors will find a balance between on-the-water racing and social activities. This is definitely a regatta sailors do not want to miss!

In its fourth year, BACARDI Miami Sailing Week presented by EFG Bank is building on the success of previous year’s events, again offering six days of remarkable sailing competition. Celebrating its 86th anniversary, the Bacardi Cup has become a world known event valued by many. The Trofeo Bacardi traces its roots to 1920’s Havana’s, Cuba. The regatta was conceived as a three-day event with sailors competing for the Trofeo BACARDI as part of the Cup of Cuba’s Mid-Winter Championship. In 1962 political unrest forced the Bacardi Cup to move from Havana to Coconut Grove, Florida, where it has since been hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club, the organizing authority for the BACARDI Cup. Heading into 2013, the Bacardi Cup continues to be the only Cuban-born sporting event to survive in the United States. This event now attracts more than 200 sailors each year from some 23 countries and the attention of national & international media. The 86th running of the BACARDI Cup for the Star class will be the marquee event of BACARDI Miami Sailing Week, with racing from Sunday, March 3rd through Saturday, March 9th, 2013. Competition for the Melges 20, Melges 24, J/80, J/70 and Viper 640 classes takes place Thursday, March 7th, through Saturday, March 9th, with the Melges 20s also competing for their Winter Series and the Viper 640s

also competing for their Pan American Championship. The prestigious Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove, Miami will continue to support the BACARDI Cup and BACARDI Miami Sailing Week with Mark Pincus as the Regatta Chairman. The event will also be sustained by Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, US Sailing Center, Shake a Leg, Coconut Grove Sailing Club, City of Miami, Coconut Grove business Development and Miami-Dade County.

NEWPORT

The same successful format started in Miami was used to create this exciting new event. With the continued support from BACARDI and EFG Bank along the precious and professional experience of Sail Newport the Bacardi Newport Sailing Week, now in its third year attracts sailors from all over the country. Staged from Newport’s public sailing center, six one design fleets - Star, Melges 20, Melges 24, Viper 640, J/80 and J/70 will gather and compete in three days of fun and exciting racing on the waters of Narragansett Bay. Located at picturesque Fort Adams State Park, Sail Newport offers easy access to the bay, a great facility with a spectacular view of downtown Newport & of the New York Yacht Club.

HOSPITALITY

The hospitality areas are designed with only one thing in mind: providing our sailors and guests a fun and entertaining ambience where to relax after an exhilarating day on the water. Plenty of Bacardi rum, food and music will create the perfect scenario to what will be an exhilarating event. Participants are also invited to join the event’s social activities and take full advantage of the local flair.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Sailing is of course the main component of our events and remains our main priority, but BACARDI Sailing Week presented by EFG Bank is also about hospitality and camaraderie among sailors. What could be better than joining our social events to get a taste of what the Miami and Newport lifestyle are all about? As many participants travel considerable distances our events aims to offer lasting memories. With its combination of high-class sailing talent, spectacular scenarios and renowned friendly hospitality the Miami Sailing Week and the Newport Sailing Week are certainly par with the International Sailing events.

CULTURAL EVENTSOne of the aspects that differentiates BACARDI Sailing Week from other National and International regattas is the cultural tie-in. Our aim is to reach out to sailors and the local community alike and offer different prospective on sailing and what sailing represents through the eyes of world’s best photographers. For 2012 Onne van der Wal accepted our invitation to display the best of the best of his collection. Onne van der Wal’s award winning nautical photography is world renowned for its unique composition, brilliant colors, tack sharp details and his attention to the technicalities of digital photography. From his Newport, RI based studio and retail gallery, Onne and his staff manage his extensive collection of stock and fine art photography of more than one million photographs. Onne’s library holds images from around the globe and features the most beautiful classic yachts, the sleekest racing machines, quiet harbors and secluded beaches, icebergs, and wildlife. The exhibit will open on March 4th with a welcome cocktail and culminate on March 10th in conjunction with the regatta awards ceremony. The display will be situated at the North Hall of the Coconut Convention Center, it will be open to the public from noon to 7:00PM daily and it will be free of charge.

What started out as a three-day event with less than 10 boats in 1927, the Bacardi Cup has become an iconic event now part of Bacardi Miami Sailing Week. This new Miami tradition will offer Star, Viper 640, Melges 20, Melges 24 and J/24 sailors the chance to compete in a six-day experience that gathers the sailing community together in a fun-filled week of regattas, awards ceremonies and parties.
