Course in Depth

What will I study?

In Year 1 you will study a set of modules providing a solidfoundation for the second and third years of your degree.These cover a range of skills including computer sciencealgorithms, databases, computer hardware andnetworking, programming, and the basics of web designand development.

Year 2 covers the theoretical concepts and practicalapplications of programming for the web in greaterdepth. You will develop an understanding of the tools andtechniques needed to implement dynamic web contentand be introduced to the theories, concepts and methodsbehind designing and building web database systems.There is also a dedicated module focused on enhancingyour employability and developing essential skills for theworkplace. On completion of the second year you havethe option of undertaking a 12-month industrialplacement or year abroad before beginning your thirdyear.

Year 3 offers you the opportunity to expand your skillsinto mobile applications and games development,usability testing and data analysis. You will produce aportfolio to demonstrate your capabilities to futureemployers and enhance your job prospects. You willcomplete your degree by planning, developing and testinga small project under the supervision of a tutor.

How will I study?

The course is extremely practical with classes based inwell-equipped computer laboratories with up-to-datehardware and industry standard software. You will workin small groups to develop your team-working and otherpersonal transferable skills including communication,presentation, report writing, and application of researchmethods.

You will also have the opportunity to develop youremployability profile through a work placement.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are varied and designed to ensure you

acquire a range of skills, particularly those required byfuture employers. You will design and write programs,write reports and essays, critically analyse documents,deliver oral presentations and undertake examinations.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by staff who are passionate aboutstudent learning and development and who have recentexperience in the software development industry. Thisprovides a lively and highly effective learningenvironment.

The course is delivered by specialists in web design, webdevelopment and computer science. The programmeteam includes active researchers in areas such as userexperience design, information retrieval, webinformation architecture, visualisation and theapplication of problem-based learning in web systems.

Academic staff are active researchers and regularcontributors to conferences and journals.

Our modern computer laboratories are equipped withhigh-specification computers, high-resolution screensand the latest hardware and software.

A four-screen CAVE (Computer Augmented VirtualEnvironment) provides a super immersive 3D virtualenvironment, enabling users to immerse themselves in avirtual room and experience real life scenarios in 4Kresolution.

There are also specialist laboratories for networking andgames programming, in addition to a specialist researchlaboratory, open access laboratory, a Harvard stylelecture theatre, and 'The Hatchery', a working space fornew business ideas.

Learning resources include robots and a roboticssimulator, wired and wireless networking hardware,graphics software, web development tools, softwaredevelopment environments, big data servers, eyetrackers, giant 3D interactive teaching screens, and otherspecialist software required for studying forensics andinternet security techniques.

Level 4 (Year 1 of Full-Time Programme)

CIS1107: Foundations of Computer Science (20 credits)Foundations of Computer Science introduces you to the concepts and practices of problem solving through a series ofinnovative class seminars and individual experiments. You will learn to identify a problem, analyse it, and produce astructured solution. Exploring common issues within computing, you will also see how all of the separate areas merge,overlap and depend on each other in order for a robust computing system to be developed.

CIS1108: Digital World: Information Systems and Design (20 credits)Digital World: Information Systems and Design explores how the world of the 21st century is underpinned bycomputing technology. The module will develop your understanding of the essential concepts of systems analysis,including identifying systems processes, understanding business needs and presenting appropriate IT solutions. Youwill then apply this knowledge of systems analysis and design methods to make suggestions for improvement of abusiness, its processes and information systems.

CIS1109: Digital World: Computer Architecture and Networks (20 credits)Digital World: Computer Architecture and Networks explores how the world of the 21st century is underpinned bycomputing technology while challenging you to envision your future developments as a Computing professional. Themodule discusses how current and modern computer architectures operates. It also analyses the technology on whichcomputer architecture depends, starting with current central processing units (CPUs) and their instruction sets andprogressing to the principles of modern multitasking operating systems that are supported by the underlyinghardware architectures. An important aspect of modern computer technology is networking. The module introducesand covers basic principles of networks, their interconnecting components and protocols used in enabling reliablecommunications.

CIS1110: Web Design and Development (20 credits)Web Design and Development is a fusion of two distinct areas in the world of web content production. The modulewill enable you to develop a sound understanding of the World Wide Web, the related technologies, the relationshipsbetween them and also their use. You will also explore colour and design theories, layout and typography. In addition,the module provides an appropriate setting to introduce some of the more powerful, user friendly web developmenttools used widely in the industry today, along with HTML and CSS and both client and server side scripting.

CIS1111: Programming: Concepts to Construction 1 (20 credits)Programming: Concepts to Construction 1 provides a practical introduction to the fundamentals of anobject-oriented approach to software development. You will be introduced to the analytical techniques and processesthat are essential for specifying, designing and implementing applications.

CIS1112: Programming: Concepts to Construction 2 (20 credits)Programming: Concepts to Construction 2 provides a practical introduction to the fundamentals of anobject-oriented approach to software development. You will explore and develop object-oriented modellingtechniques and receive an introduction to programming through event-driven program design and graphical userinterfaces.

CIS2148: Fundamentals of User Experience Design (20 credits)Fundamentals of User Experience Design recognises that UX Design is multidisciplinary and draws upon theunderlying theory and practice associated with a range of subjects. These include information architecture, userresearch and usability testing, content strategy, interaction design, human-computer Interaction and informationscience. The module will focus on the user and their impact on the modern design processes of interfaces/systems. Youwill engage in a user study to identify the mental models and associated conceptual models. The findings and improveddesigns of the given system will be conveyed in a report. Time management, planning, analysis and the application ofknowledge will be a particularly strong features of this module.

CIS2152: Fundamentals of Web Coding (20 credits)Fundamentals of Web Coding introduces you to the theoretical and practical foundations of coding for the web.Software development for the web has made significant progress in the last decade, moving from primarily static pagesto powerful and complex applications. This module will introduce you to the fundamentals of coding for the web, thecore algorithms and data structures that you will deal with in the business world, and how to ensure that your code issecure and correct. You will learn how to take the fundamental algorithms and data-structures and apply them to solvesmall-scale real-world problems. The module will enable you to expand your knowledge of a number of programminglanguages for software development both on the server-side and in the browser.

CIS2162: Employability (20 credits)Employability simulates, as accurately as possible, what it's like to work in a given Computer Science specialism. Youwill be introduced to the 'world of work' via a simulated work environment, as part of a team representing a fictionalcompany, but which need to produce real products or engage in realistic work-related activities. A 15-day placementwill also enhance essential employability skills and provide you with the opportunity to relate theory to practice, buildon your transferable skills and evaluate your learning.

CIS2167: Server and Client Side Scripting (20 credits)Server and Client Side Scripting introduces you to the theoretic and practical concepts and applications of objectoriented programming for web based developments and applications. The theoretical content will focus on the designand modelling of object oriented and model-view-controller architectures/systems and any underlying datastructures. The practical side of the module will concentrate on the implementation of the designs/models and datasystems to provide valid solutions to real-world problems.

CIS2168: Data Driven Design (20 credits)Data Driven Design covers the theoretical foundations of data analysis for user experience design together with thepractical aspects of applying existing methods and tools to large data-sets. You will learn about different data sourcesand data types and be introduced to a wide range of data analysis methods and tools, gaining an understanding ofwhich methods and tools are applicable to which data sources and data types. Undertaking the complete role of a dataanalyst, you will progress from the initial processing of a raw data-set to the final visualisation and recommendationsderived from the data analysis.

CIS2169: Web Application Development (20 credits)Web Application Development covers the theoretical models and structures for designing and building webapplications together with the practical aspects of managing the development and deployment of webapplications. You will discover how to take these models and apply them to practice in order to ensure that theresulting applications are fit for purpose, allow for easy development, are secure, and maintainable. A key focus will bethe analysis of the problem space alongside the modelling of the state space representation. You will have theopportunity to expand your knowledge of code management techniques and to experience the process of

Level 6 (Year 3 of Full-Time Programme)

CIS3140: Research and Development Project (40 credits)Research and Development Project provides you with the opportunity to show individual creativity andoriginality and apply appropriate knowledge and skills taught throughout the programme. The module requires you todemonstrate investigative, problem-solving, communication, management and other transferable skills as youundertake an individual project. You will conduct in-depth work on a substantial problem. This will include researchingand analysing the problem and identifying and achieving a solution.

CIS3158: Mobile Applications and Games Development (20 credits)Mobile Applications and Games Development introduces you to the theory and practice of developing web-basedmobile applications and games. The module will cover architectures and technologies used in the developmentprocess. This module will introduce students to the fundamental technologies for developing web-based mobileapplications and games. You will discover how web-based technologies and architectures can be deployed in mobileapplication and gaming contexts and learn to plan, design and implement web-based mobile applications and games.You will also develop the necessary skills required to test that your code is both correct and secure.

CIS3159: Professional Portfolio (20 credits)Professional Portfolio focuses on enhancing your employability through the undertaking of a series of smallweb-based technical builds/tasks that have been provided by industry partners or set by academic staff. The focus ison interacting with a client, interpreting a brief, delivering to the brief, and presenting your work in a mock interview.The module will outline how to search for and identify the right job and will also cover the applicationprocess, preparing a portfolio that showcases the best of your work, interview techniques and assessment dayexperiences. You will ultimately develop an online portfolio website and two client briefs.

CIS3161: Research and Development Methods (20 credits)Research and Development Methods prepares you to undertake a software development project or dissertation. Themodule will enhance your ability to manage an individual project and act autonomously with limited supervisorguidance. You will be introduced to the main methods of research and the contexts in which they are conducted andenhance your understanding of the principles and perspectives of research. Building your practical experience andconfidence in using a range of research methods, the aim is to demystify research and recognise the everyday skills andtechniques which are involved.

You will select one of the following modules:

CIS3144: Forensic Computing (20 credits)Forensic Computing teaches the methods, tools and techniques required for data recovery and analysis. The legalrequirements for presenting such data will also be considered. The module provides the skills and knowledgenecessary to undertake a forensic computing investigation in a systematic manner, as well as to develop anunderstanding of the role of a computer forensics analyst through the use of existing applications and investigativetechniques.

CIS3160: Usability Testing and Data Analysis (20 credits)Usability Testing and Data Analysis immerses you in the user-centred methodology that has become one of the mainmethods of gathering user-generated data and scientifically proving changes to systems. There are many types ofusability experiments that can be utilised (such as expert review, a/b multi-variance testing, eye tracking, talk aloud,

and mouse tracking), each with its own procedures and producing its own unique data set. This module will introduceeach method in-depth including background research, experiment set-up, procedures, data produced, and methods ofinterpreting the findings. You will subsequently research, devise and undertake a series of usability tests for a givenscenario. The process, protocols and findings will be conveyed in a report. Time management, planning, critical analysisand application of knowledge will be particularly strong features of this module.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modulesmay vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that theavailability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected bytimetabling requirements.

Timetables

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Entry Criteria

Entry Requirements

Typical offer 104-112 UCAS Tariff points, for which nospecific subjects are required, plus GCSE Mathematics atGrade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent).

Please note, for all programmes in the Department ofComputer Science, a level 2 numeracy qualification is notconsidered as equivalent to GCSE Grade C or Grade 4 inMathematics.

Example Offers

Some examples of how you can achieve 104-112 UCASTariff points are detailed below.

• A Level: BCC-BBC;

• BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTECQCF qualifications): Distinction, Merit, Merit(DMM);

• International Baccalaureate (IB): We are happy toaccept IB qualifications which achieve the requirednumber of UCAS Tariff points;

• Access to Higher Education Diploma: 45 credits atLevel 3, for example 9 credits at Distinction and 36credits at Merit or 15 credits at Distinction and 30credits at Merit. The required total can be attainedfrom various credit combinations.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actualoffers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awardsmay also be accepted.

As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (orequivalent), there is no maximum number ofqualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. Thisincludes additional qualifications such as the WelshBaccalaureate and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ),AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, andGeneral Studies AS or A Level awards.

This free, seven-week programme provides a greatopportunity to enhance your study skills and subjectknowledge and demonstrate that you are ready to studya particular subject with us, in lieu of achieving the UCASTariff points in the entry criteria.

Career Prospects

What are my career prospects?

This programme will prepare you for specialist jobs in theareas of web design, web development, mobileapplication and games development. Demand for theseskills is growing, particularly in the retail sector with theexpansion of online shopping, and there are alsoincreasing opportunities in local and nationalgovernment.

You will also be well placed to access a wide range of roleswithin software application development, ITmanagement, and software and data consultancy. Youmay wish to start your own web-based technologybusiness.

The programme is accredited by BCS, The CharteredInstitute for IT, for the purposes of fully meeting theacademic requirement for registration as a Chartered ITProfessional. Successfully completing an accreditedhonours degree is the first step to full BCS membershipand to being awarded chartered status.

How can I enhance my employability?

It is useful to consider, even before you apply, how youwill spend your time while studying and make the most ofyour university experience.

Optional, additional activities may be available on thisdegree which could help to prepare you for a stimulatingand rewarding career. These include:

• Sandwich Years - you may have the opportunity toapply to complete a sandwich year placement,usually as the third year of a four year degree, andgain highly relevant work experience;

• Erasmus+ and Study Abroad - you may have theopportunity to apply to spend time studying orworking abroad, usually as the third year of a fouryear degree, enabling you to immerse yourself in adifferent culture;

• Learning a Language - you may be able toparticipate in Language Steps classes, delivered atthe Edge Hill Language Centre, as additional study.

Please note, the availability of these additional activitiescannot be guaranteed for all students. Depending onavailability and the number of students wanting toparticipate, there may be a competitive applicationprocess for sandwich year placements or studying abroadopportunities or you may be required to secure a relevantplacement yourself.

Finance

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK student who will be joiningthis undergraduate degree on a full-time basis inacademic year 2021/22, the tuition fee will be £9,250 perannum (subject to final Government approval).

Tuition fees for international students enrolling on theprogramme on a full-time basis in academic year 2021/22are £12,500 per annum. Exemptions apply for EUstudents who have settled or pre-settled status under theEU Settlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, whomay be eligible for the UK full-time tuition fee rate.

If you are a prospective UK student who will be joiningthis undergraduate degree on a part-time basis inacademic year 2021/22, the tuition fee will be £77 percredit, i.e. £1,540 per 20 credit module (subject to finalGovernment approval). 360 credits are required tocomplete an undergraduate degree. EU students whohave settled or pre-settled status under the EUSettlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, may beeligible for the UK part-time tuition fee rate.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.

Financial Support

Subject to eligibility, UK students joining thisundergraduate degree can apply for a Tuition Fee Loanfrom the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees.UK students enrolling on the programme may also beeligible to apply for additional funding to help with livingcosts.
