Dear Students, status of University to a cluster of our institutions in
I am indeed happy to note your interest in joining our
University. In this small booklet we have presented a
brief profile of our Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed
University. I would very much like all of you to
know about Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University
and its parent body Bharati Vidyapeeth because
these two institutions are distinct from others of their
kind in many respects. I established Bharati Vidyapeeth
in 1964 with a realization that the all sided social
transformation can be brought about through the
spread of education. During the last 48 years, we
have established more than 171 educational units
of various kinds right from Pre-Primary School up to the
University in different parts of India and even in the
capital city of New Delhi.
accordance with the provisions in the University Grants
Commission Act, 1956. Since the inception of this
University, our endeavour has been to develop it as a
lively and throbbing center of learning and research. I
am very happy to say here that within the short span of a
decade or so, this University has established its
academic reputation not only across the country
but also outside. This is evident from the fact that
we get students from different parts of India and
also from different countries. Our both the campuses
in Pune are very well planned and developed. They
can be easily compared with the leading educational
campuses in the country. We provide all the
necessary amenities and facilities to our students on
our campuses.
Bharati Vidyapeeth is an institution with its distinct What we have achieved so far is definitely

INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIC INTERACTION
Bharati Vidyapeeth provides unique opportunity to work in collaboration with allied disciplines of Biotechnology such
as Pharmacy, Ayurveda, Medicine, Environmental, Pure Science, Medicine, Dentistry etc. Collaborative research
projects with college of Ayurveda, Pharmacy, Agriculture and Interactive Research School for Health Affairs (IRSHA)
are conceived. The academic programme of Rajiv Gandhi Institute has a strong support of scientists from prestigious
Institutes such as Interactive Research School of Health Affairs (IRSHA), Bharati Vidyapeeth and National Chemical
Laboratory (NCL). Recently Rajiv Gandhi Institute has signed MOU's with Jay Biotech & LabIndia Ltd. for research &
conducting workshops respectively.
SCOPE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
Biotechnology is an emerging inter disciplinary branch of science that applies the principles of biology and
engineering and offers scientists all the background material, indispensable for the development of biotechnological
processes and products. It also offers a unique collection of current information on all aspects in biotechnology
research and genomics, bioinformatics, special processes, metabolism and legal, economic and ethical dimensions.
Advances in science and technology have transformed traditional biotechnology techniques, such as selective
breeding, hybridization and mutagenesis, into modern ones such as recombinant DNA techniques and tissue culture.
This transformation has opened the door to more varied applications in areas such as health care, the environment,
forestry, industrial processes and others.
Information Brochure | BBT | 2013-14 24
Discoveries in genetics have led to novel strategies for treating disease. Decades ago, scientists learned that DNA is
mainly the archive of genetic information. Its orders are translated into action by segments of ribonucleic acid (RNA),
which serve as the working blueprints for all proteins. Today , chemists are beginning to create valuable new drugs by
fabricating “anti-sense” segments of RNA, whose sequence is the exact opposite of an unwanted sequence, to
combine with certain existing strands of RNA and thus block the action of specific genes.
Agriculture clearly needs new and safer tools to manage a range of insects and plant diseases. Fortunately, the
pesticide industry has discovered and brought to market some very effective, safer and selective biopesticides and
closely related synthetic analogues. These “ reduced risk” pesticides are key new tools for farmers. Within a few years,
millions of farmers worldwide will use these biopesticides to reduce their reliance on risky, disruptive broad – spectrum
insecticides.
Exciting prospects are likely to result from industrial –scale plant tissue culture. This may soon obviate the need for
rearing whole plants in order to generate valuable commodities such as dyes, flavorings, drugs, and chemicals.
Cloning techniques could prove to be the way to tackle some of the acute problems of reforesting in semi-desert areas.
Plants frown from the cells of mature trees could greatly speed up the process. Combination of advantageous genes
could bring about a new era in plant protection. The crop can be treated safely with more effective does of weed killer,
and it is also engineered to be less susceptible to insect damage.

33. If the candidate does not want to attempt any particular question he/she is advised not to touch any of the
circles given against that question.
34. The candidate must not fold the answer sheet and should not make any stray marks on it.
35. A specimen copy of the answer sheet is given at Annexure V. Candidates are advised to go through it and
get conversant with it. The candidate will learn from this answer sheet as to how to fill in the information asked
for and how to mark the answers. This will help the candidates to do the things correctly and save their time.
CHANGING AN ANSWER
36. If a candidate wants to change any answer marked by him/her on the answer sheet, he/she must completely
erase the existing ball point pen or pencil mark and then darken the appropriate circle with a ball point pen or
HB Pencil. Candidate must not leave any visible mark in the circle after erasing. Otherwise the response will be
rejected by the optical mark scanner. Such erasing should be avoided as far as possible.
37. Test Booklet number as filled in by the candidate in the answer sheet will be accepted as final for the
purpose of evaluation. When the booklet number is left blank or more than one booklet number is indicated
on the answer sheet it will be deemed as incorrect booklet number and the answer sheet will not be
evaluated.
PENS, ERASERS AND PENCILS
