Dear 6th Grade Families,
The Science Department is excited to welcome your daughters to our classrooms. In 6th grade, students will use a textbook series published by The JASON Project, a non-profit organization that works to connect students to the work of research scientists through its educational programs and curricula. JASON publish-es a series of Middle School science textbooks, and the JASON “Mission Center” website includes online versions of the books, as well as videos, interactive games, and digital labs.
The JASON website is a wonderful complement to our Middle School one-to-one laptop program. Sixth grade students are required to purchase online access to the JASON Project “Mission Center,” which includes the online version of the textbooks. Student accounts will be billed $13 for this online access. Your daughter will receive a username and password for the site in her science class in September.
If you would like for your daughter to have a hardcopy of the textbook in addition to the online access, you may order books directly from The JASON Project. Hardcopies of the books are not necessary, but we know that some families may appreciate the option. Textbooks are $25 each plus $2.50 each for shipping. We will be using three books in the series – Tectonic Fury, Monster Storms and Resilient Planet.
To order the optional hardcopies of these books, you can follow these directions:
1. Go to www.jason.org2. Near the top, click on “Store”3. In the middle of the page choose “click here to visit the store”4. Select “Print Curricula”5. Select the student edition of the three books (Tectonic Fury, Monster Storms and Resilient Planet) 6. Proceed to Checkout
To learn more about The JASON Project, please explore their website at www.jason.org. The Science Department is excited for the learning opportunities that this textbook series allows, and we look forward to meeting your daughters next month.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Morris and Kate Brendler6th Grade Science Teachers

Dear Middle School Parents,
Welcome to a new school year! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to you and let you know more about my role in your daughters’ lives as the Middle School Learning Specialist. My primary responsi-bility is to provide support and resources for students in order to guide them on their journey as they learn to be self-reliant and productive in their academic careers. Throughout the year, I will be individually work-ing with many students either because the girls have asked for my help or because a teacher has recom-mended that we meet. If I work with your daughter, I will most likely be in touch with you and let you know what your daughter and I have been talking about. Also, I hope that you will feel free to contact me if you have any concerns about your daughter's progress.
On that note, I also would like to urge you to let me know as soon as possible about any specific issues regarding your daughter’s learning profile, especially if you have ever had any educational testing done. Some families are reluctant to share this information, either because they believe it is no longer relevant or out of a concern that their daughter will be stigmatized. I would like to assure you that the teachers in our Middle School are very open, understanding and experienced in working with students with a wide diversity of learning styles, so they will be careful not to label or limit your daughter. Nevertheless, if you feel uncom-fortable, please simply ask me to keep any testing results confidential, and I will be more than happy to honor your request.
During this exciting and sometimes frustrating time in your child’s life, it is important that the school and your family work together as a team to provide for your daughter the best and most appropriate learning experiences and environment. Again, please do not hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions or concerns. The quickest way to reach me during the school year is preferably through email at [email protected] or you may reach me by phone at 410.323.8800 x1220. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Warmest regards,

Dear Bryn Mawr Families:
We hope you and your daughters are enjoying the beginning days of summer. We wanted to share details regarding our book-ordering procedures via MBS Direct.
Beginning Monday, July 13, the virtual bookstore will be accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week. You can access it through the Bryn Mawrket website (www.brynmawrket.com) or by going directly to www.mbsDirect.net (select Bryn Mawr School). If you prefer, call MBS Direct toll-free at 1.800.325.3252.
By ordering early through MBS Direct you will find a greater selection of used books to purchase. MBS is offering free shipping from July 13 to July 26 on orders over $99.00.
Just a few notes and reminders…
• The girls should select the books needed by grade and course title.
• When purchasing the foreign language textbooks, 6th graders and new students should purchase the text for the foreign language they have chosen, and the level they have been assigned by the school. The 7th grade math classes use the same textbook for both Standard (S) and Enriched (E) sections, and 6th and 8th grade math students will know whether they are in Advanced Math or Pre-Algebra or Standard (S) or Enriched (E) Algebra.
• The English Department has asked that paperback books for all classes be purchased new through MBS. It is very important that each student has the same edition in the classroom and that books be free from the markings of previous users.
• Sixth grade students who move up from Bryn Mawr’s Lower School will continue to use their BMS totes. Sixth grade students who are new to Bryn Mawr will receive their BMS tote on orientation day. In addition, all sixth graders will receive a Middle School planner and a TI 503 calculator. These items will be charged to their student accounts. All other students should have a tote bag of their choice as well. Backpacks are not allowed in classrooms.
• Student schedules will be distributed on the first day of school.
We are very excited about continuing this book service and will be glad to assist in any way. You may contact me at [email protected] or by calling 410.323.1118 x1234.
Summer Hours: Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.–12 noon.
Have a great summer!

Bryn Mawr Middle School 2015–2016Before and After-School Supervision
Before-School Supervision
Students who arrive on campus between 7:00 and 7:45 a.m. will be supervised by a faculty member in the cafeteria. Breakfast may be purchased. No one should arrive before 7:00 a.m. Students are not allowed into the school buildings until 7:45 a.m.
After-School Supervision
An After-School Supervision Program is offered in the North Building at no additional charge from 4:00–6:00 p.m. each day of the week, unless otherwise noted on our Middle School Calendar. Supervision as a service ends at 6:00 p.m.
• Parents should park on Melrose Avenue (not on the Little School Driveway) and walk around to the Quad Door to come in and sign out your daughters.
• A late fee will be charged after that time: $15.00 per 5 minutes after the 6:00 p.m. pickup time.• Please contact the proctor in the event that you are running late, so she can know when to expect
you. The school switchboard is shut down at 6:00 p.m. each day. The direct contact number for After School Supervision is 410.323.1118 x1688. Please keep this phone number in an accessible place. Also, be sure your daughter knows how to reach you every afternoon.
Please read the procedures carefully and discuss them with your daughter. We will strictly enforce these rules because it is crucial for us to know each student’s whereabouts at all times in order to ensure the well-being of all our students. When a student fails to comply with a rule, she will have to serve a detention.
There will be two proctors each afternoon in the North Building — one in NB 8 and one in NB 6. This is an ideal time for your daughter to get some of their homework done. Encourage her to do so!
Procedures and Regulations for Middle School After-School Supervision
All students are required to sign in promptly at 4:00 p.m. The school cannot be held responsible for a student who neglects to sign in. If your daughter has a lesson or other arrangements that interfere with the 4:00 p.m. deadline, please write a note that can be kept on file for reference during the year. 1. A student may not sign any name other than her own on the sign-in list. We ask that students please
refrain from writing abbreviations on the list, as they are hard for us to decode.
2. Parents may park on Melrose Avenue but NOT on the Little School Driveway Circle.
3. The person driving your daughter home must come into the building to sign her out. This is the most frequent infraction of the rules. Please do not ask your daughter to sign herself out.
4. Students will remain in these locations in the North Building: NB 8, NB 6, Lobby, Quad, and NB 7 (upon special arrangement with the proctor). Only 8th grade students with written permission may sign out to attend athletic games on campus. Please be aware that they will not be supervised at those events.
5. Do not make arrangements to pick up your child at any location other than the North Building after 4:00 p.m.
We are glad that we can provide this service and look forward to a smooth year!

Traffic Safety At Bryn Mawr
As we prepare for the new school year, we ask you to review the following topics related to traffic flow in and around The Bryn Mawr School. Adherence to these policies and procedures is essential to the safety of our students as they are dropped off and picked up at school. Bryn Mawr’s location in a residential neighborhood makes it necessary that all drivers and pedestrians pay close attention to the traffic patterns and regulations designed specifically to make traffic flow smoothly and safely. In addition, the school requests that all drivers be respectful of our neighborhood residents, taking particular care not to block their driveways. SPEED on all neighboring streets should never exceed 25 MPH. During drop-off and pick-up times, 10 MPH is the safest speed.
MELROSE AVENUE remains closed for drop-off and pick-up.
LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS should be dropped off and picked up at the Lower School Administration Building. They may be picked up at the Northern Parkway circle by Centennial Hall if the Lower School Office has been notified ahead of time. The Gordon Drive should not be used for carpool.
MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS should be dropped off and picked up at the Northern Parkway circle by Centennial Hall. This is a NO PARKING area, and cars left unattended will be ticketed. (See below for details.)
ALL PEDESTRIANS must use campus sidewalks and crosswalks. No one is to walk in the driveways or roads.
ON-CAMPUS PARKING is limited. All numbered spaces are reserved for faculty and staff. Visitors should park in the designated visitor parking spaces that are available in front of the Gatehouse and east of the Gordon entrance. The Gordon driveway is for faculty/staff and Admission visitors parking only. ALL-SCHOOL EVENTS bring many cars to the streets surrounding the school. Please look first to park in designated spaces at Bryn Mawr. Those who must park off campus should remember that they are in a residential neighborhood and be appropriately courteous when they are driving, parking, or walking.
Your support and help in providing for the safe arrival and departure of our students is greatly appreciated. Thank you as well for driving courteously on campus and in our surrounding neighborhood.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact director of security Terry Detorie at [email protected] or 410.323.8800 x1616. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

Dear Middle & Upper School Families,
As we look forward to a safe and productive school year, I want to review the Middle and Upper School carpool procedures as well as our early-arrival and late-stay programs for children. These procedures are in place to ensure the safety of our campus community.
Middle and Upper School Carpool ProceduresEffective Wednesday, September 3, 2015
• No student may be dropped off or picked up on the Gordon Driveway, Melrose Avenue, Kenmore Avenue, at 600 West and/or at the bridge crossing on Northern Parkway Drive. Students will receive detentions for violating this policy.
• Middle and Upper School students without siblings in the Lower School must be dropped off at the top of the traffic loop at the Northern Parkway entrance to the school. To ensure safety, students should get into and out of vehicles from the sidewalk side of the loop only.
• We have observed that traffic backs up on Northern Parkway at peak carpool times. If you are arriving at or leaving from the Northern Parkway entrance to the school from 7:45 to 8:00 a.m. and 3:15 to 3:45 p.m., you will likely experience traffic congestion. Please stay alert and take care to observe the stop signs and the clearly marked crosswalks. Be aware that on Bryn Mawr’s campus, pedestrians have the right-of-way. Drivers are required to stop and allow them to proceed.
Early-Arrival & Late-Stay Programs
For your convenience, we will provide morning supervision for students arriving between 7:00 and 7:45 a.m. All students arriving early should be dropped off at the top of the traffic loop at the North-ern Parkway entrance to the school (please do not use Melrose Avenue or the Gordon Driveway as an early morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up location). Students will enter school through Centennial Hall and proceed to morning supervision in the Dining Center. Afternoon supervision for Middle School students will be held until 6:00 p.m. Middle School students should be picked-up from their respective late-stay locations.
Your support and help in providing for the safe arrival and departure of our students is greatly appreciated. Thank you as well for driving courteously on campus and in our surrounding neighborhood.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 410.323.8800 x1616. Thank you for your continued cooperation.
