The past decade, it has been invadedbyhipfashionandotherdesignersandhasnowbecomeoneofofBrussels’trendiestneighborhoods.Itisalsothe area in Brussels where Brussels’ Flemish community tends to hang out in bars like Walvis, Monk, Roskam, De Markten and the likes. MadameMoustache,ontheformerfishmarketPlaceSainte-Catherine,iswherewedanceLindyHopeveryotherWednes-day. PlaceSaint-Géryisfullofbarsandtheirterrasses:colourful,warmandwelcoming,theyservedrinksandcuisinefromallovertheworld.Youalsofindmanyasianrestaurantshere.

Saint-Gilles

Indecadespast,Saint-GilleswasfamousforitsArt-Nouveaufaçadesandsocialistpolitics.Todayit’sbeingrediscoveredasan alternative to the Brussels bubble. Onceuponatimetherewasaneighbourhoodbelovedbyartists:whatevertheera,Flageyhasalwayshadthatstyleoftrendyandfriendlyculture.IntheareayouhavethequietIxellesPonds,plentyoffineArtNouveauandArtDecomansions,and–nottobemissed–theFlagey‘Steamship’building.ItusedtohosttheformerNationalInstituteforRadioBroadcasting(NIR),buttodaythebuildingisusedforculturaleventsandaccomodatesCaféBelga,oneofBrussels’ bar institutions. Come to this area to discover the creative, multicultural, young andeffervescentenergythatemanatesfromthislivelypartofBrussels.

Atomium

This102mtallmonumentwasbuiltforthe1958WorldFair.Itrespresentsaunitcellofanironcrystalmagnified165billiontimesandconsistsof9enormousmetallicballsconnectedbysteel tubes. It hosts exhibitions and has a panoramic restaurant in the highest ball, giving you a view over Brussels and on clear days even Antwerp! TogettotheAtomium(itisontheoutsideofBrussels),takemetroline6towardsRoiBaudouinandhopoffatHeyzel.
