• Part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

Significance• Great variety of vegetation – ranging from dry scrub jungle

to evergreen forests and high altitude shrub savannas and sholas.

• Mammals - 30, Birds - 270, Reptiles - 23, Amphibians - 14, Fishes - 10.

• Other dependents:– 7000+ tribals inside– 65000+ cattle inside and around – 1 lakh+ people around

1. Man-animal conflict mitigation

• Crop depredation by Elephants.• Injury/Death of human beings.• Electrocution of elephants.

Number of different types of human-wildlife conflict cases in the reserve over last 4 years.

Use of Funds

i. Increased compensation: Will reduce the threat to wild populations from retaliatory acts.

ii. Shifting to other commercially viable crops:Subsidize the shift of agriculture from the crops that attract elephants.

2. Eco-development inputs to villages in Eco-sensitive Zone

Use of Fundsi. New inputs to villages

Gas connections, solar lights, solar lanterns, solar water heaters and other equipment to reduce the dependency on firewood.

ii. Sustaining the use of gas To subsidize first two refills of gas cylinders.

3. Land Purchase in Corridors

• 15 mammal species in all seasons of the year, including tiger, leopard, elephant, gaur, deer.

• Live stock and people are the common users of the corridors.

Use of Funds

i. Buying the lands around the corridors: Buying the lands and leaving them in wild state to increase width of corridors.

4. Improvements in anti-poaching camps and protection-related equipment

i. Additional uniforms, sweaters, rain coats, shoes, sleeping bags.

ii. New walkie-talkie sets, GPS devices and fire arms, 4WD vehicles for patrolling.

5. Adopting anti-poaching camps

i. Entire expenses of a particular camp.

ii. Food, water provision, clothes, shoes, equipment.

iii. Up scaling the old units

i. Replacing cattle with low number of high yielding cattle that can be stall fed.

ii. Buying off goat and sheep from inside the reserve.

7. Rehabilitation of tribals

i. To conduct trips to show examples of successful rehabilitation like in Bhadra or Periyar.

ii. Funds would also be required to give extra benefits along with the actual rehabilitation packages.

8. Monitoring using surveillance cameras

High mast 360°cameras in the sensitive boundary areas to curb tree felling, hunting for bush meat and setting of forest fires.

9. Fire Fighting

i. To buy firefighting equipment like axes, torches, helmets, fire rakes, shovels, billhooks, cans for water, first aid kits and to hire extra vehicles for fire season.

ii. Corpus fund for fire watchers for a period of three months is crucial.

iii. Jeep-mounted Water Supply Units

This has multiple utilities of supplying water to fire fighting teams, providing water to remote APCs and filling the artificial water bodies in summer.

10. Improvements in facilities for staff

i. Maintenance of the residential quarters for staff

ii. Providing extra allowance to staff working in wildlife areas

iii. Providing scholarships to their children who continue their studies beyond PUC

iv. Providing the field staff with insurance

11. Spreading conservation message through eco-tourism and awareness campaigns

• Providing nature education to the children of the surrounding areas of the park is crucial for long term conservation of the forest.

• A nature interpretation centre at BRT greatly helps in shaping the young minds towards conservation.

i. Creation of new in Interpretation CenterA state-of-art center to connect the visitors to nature and to the spirit of BRT as well.

ii. Raising public awarenessConducting awareness camps for public, especially the people in the villages around the reserve.

iii. Improving ecotourism profile CSR funds should be used to develop brochures, booklets and coffee table books about the reserve.

12. Rapid Response Unit (RRU)

• To deal with emergencies related to –– forest/wildlife offences, – human-wildlife conflict situations, – firefighting, – wildlife rescue operations.

A 4WD vehicle, along with equipments like stretchers, first aid kits, GPS devices, binoculars, searchlight, torches, rain gear, handheld radios, rope, pulley etc.

13. Forensic laboratory

• Many wildlife rescue, disease monitoring and offence cases need support of forensic laboratories.

• A well-equipped research and investigative laboratory on Circle level for basic tests, especially for probable diseases and for vetero-legal cases.

14. Hiring good legal services

• Training the protection staff for handling cases and conducting investigations.

• To help the officers pursue cases related to forests and wildlife in a better way.
