Summertime It’s that time of year again. The kids are out of school, the lawn mowers are
running and the gardens are planted. Summertime is a time when we look forward to
that well-deserved vacation and being able to get outside to enjoy the warmth of the
sun. Ah yes, rest and relaxation - it does a body and soul good! One of the things I like to
do when the weather is not too hot or cold is sit outside and listen to some of my
favorite music. I especially like to do that in the early morning hours and listen to the
birds singing. Relaxing is very important to our well-being. It restores us and helps to
keep us healthy and strong. Too much relaxation makes us lazy and weakens us. Too
much rest is not good; neither is too much work. What we need to do is find balance in
our lives.
In Matthew 11: 28 - 30 Jesus says this; 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and
burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am
gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy
and my burden is light.” The place of true rest is when we come to Jesus. We live in a dog
eat dog world and everyone wants to be number one. The world works and works trying
to get ahead. The world tries to work twenty four hours a day seven days a week. The
world carries the burden of trying to obtain all the wealth they can so that one day they
can rest in luxury. The only true rest comes from resting in Jesus and doing the work He
has for us. As we look forward to enjoying our rest this summer let’s not forget the work
that God wants us to do. Have a safe and restful summer!
See you in church!

The number of youth in attendance grew this year! We averaged around 15 each meeting (mainly junior high). There were several retreats that were attended. I encourage you to talk the youth about their past year and let them share the stories of the fun they had. Also, thanks to the volunteers and especially to Julie Norris for their help in covering lessons and support. - Mike, Victoria, Amy, and James

Thanks from the Disaster Auction …
QUILT AUCTION 2016 FINAL REPORT Item # Pieces Lowest Highest Total Quilts over 80 x 100 8 $150 $2,050 $9,335 Quilts under 80 x 100 8 $25 $523 $1,283 Comforters 26 $25 $280 $2,940 Baby Quilts/Comforters 36 $10 $310 $2,155 Wall Hangings 41 $10 $725 $3,365 Miscellaneous 17 $5 $216 $942 Total 136 $20,020
This year we had 14 more items to sell than we had last year, but the grand total was $1,230 less. Though the highest single bid for a quilt was $2,050, one quilt was sold two times for a total of $2,500. Three items that were registered in the booklet did not get finished in time for this year’s auction and will be sold next year.
Contributors to the quilt auction are recognizing the value of registering their items for inclusion in the booklet and more items are bring registered each year. We continue to encourage the contribution of quality pieces.
As in the past, we attempted to sell the larger, high-quality items first, while the most bidders were present. If there was a request to sell a particular piece earlier in the auction, we did our best to accommodate that request.
The M.A.D. Logo Wall Hanging sold for $725. This was the 20th year it was sold and the total raised in those 20 years is $8,865. This wall hanging is kept by the highest bidder for six months and then given back to the District Office to display for six months. This year’s high bidder was Galen Martin from Frederick Church of the Brethren.
Sponsored items:
We purchased five quilt tops, and two wall hangings for this year’s auction for a total cost of $1,430, which was all covered by sponsors. Six of those items raised $7,330. One queen-sized quilt was not completed by auction time and will be sold at next year’s auction.
For the 2017 auction, three pillows and five quilt tops were purchased. By the end of auction day, all items were sponsored and quilters were secured for all but one quilt top. We also have two tops that were donated to us by a woman from New Oxford, which we hope to have quilted for a future auction.

With sincere thanks …
The Garrott family is very thankful to the Brownsville Church of the Brethren for opening its doors for my mother’s (Mary Frances Garrott) memorial service on June 5, 2016 due to the electric being out at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. We would also like to thank your members that helped our members in the kitchen for the fellowship meal. This was definitely a memorable service and without your assistance it wouldn’t have happened. Your care and concerns meant so much to us. Thanks again. -- Drew, Kristi & Noah Hawes and family To our Brothers & Sisters in Christ at BCOB, On behalf of the family of Mary Frances Garrott we would like to express our gratitude to you for opening up your church for us in our hour of need. The power was out at PVBC and you very lovingly and graciously welcomed us in your church so we could celebrate our loved one. We are forever grateful for your hospitality and greatly appreciate your willingness to help us out – especially on short notice. Thanks again for being the hands & feet of Jesus and helping us out.
-- Love and Blessings, Rich & Mindy Wilson
From the McGolerick Family…
The family of Ruth McGolerick would like to thank all her friends, relatives, and Brownsville Church of the Brethren members for their cards, prayers, and visits while Ruth was a resident at Vindobona Nursing Home and her subsequent death. Special thanks go to her pastors, Alan Smith and Tom Fralin, and to the members of the church who provided and served a wonderful meal. All the staff at the Vindobona Nursing Home were wonderful to Ruth and provided John with emotional support - especially Shirley Barnhouse. Thanks goes to Jennifer, Funeral Director at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home in Boonsboro for handling absolutely everything.
