Sunday of the Month

Come Worship Him!

Sunday, February 4Sunday, March 4Sunday, April 1

JohnSenior Pastor

How about that snow in January? Has everyone thawed out? There is a lot of great stuff going on at Brownson!Small Group sign-ups are open. During Lent, we will be doing a study called Living the questions: Measures of an Embodied Faith. Lent is a time when we take stock of our lives in light of the Cross. We hope these six powerful questions will help you grow in your faith journey. To sign-up for a small group just visit www.brownsonchurch.org/registration or call the church office.Lent is the approximately 40-day period between Ash Wednesday and Holy Saturday, the day before Easter is celebrated. Traditionally, this season in the life of the church has been seen as a time for preparation and realignment. For well over 1500 years, Christians

have used the season of Lent to seek God’s forgiveness, reorientation, and direction. Like taking a car in for a tune-up, Lent can be an opportunity for us to do some self-assessment and take stock of our lives. As we prepare for the joy of Easter and God’s radical, saving love that can save us from anything – even death — we take time to reflect on what God longs for us in our lives. May this season of Lent be a blessing as we seek to grow more faithful as followers of Christ doing God’s work in the world. My prayer is that this sermon series, Living the Questions throughout Lent will help you grow in your faith and to the One who journeyed to the Cross for us.

On Sunday, January 21, Session met and approved the 2018 Budget and reviewed the 2018 Stewardship Campaign results. The Christian Growth Ministry Team provided a recent assessment and roadmap that included Sunday School, Children’s Ministries, Youth Group, Bible studies and Small Groups. Discussion was held regarding growth opportunities and staffing priorities in this area.In light of the church shooting in Texas, member Jeff Clay presented options for improving Brownson’s security readiness. A task force will be formed to help improve our preparedness.

2018 Lenten Small Group Series The hope for the study is that this collecon of Scripture readings, ideas, quesons, and explora-ve materials will foster meaningful and relevant conversaon among the BMPC community dur-ing the season of Lent and beyond. May this season of Lent be a blessing as we seek to grow more faithful as followers of Christ doing God’s work in the world. The Curriculum Lent, a season of reflecon and study, invites us to consider how to faithfully respond to God’s call. Living the Quesons: Measures of an Embodied Faith encourages us to give our whole selves to God. The study will explore five essenal quesons that are touchpoints to developing an em-bodied faith, using the metaphor of the body: head, heart, hands, feet, soul. The sixth lesson will focus on how an embodied faith might lead to an authentic life, and an authentic faith community. At the heart of this study is the premise that the life of faith is deepened by self-reflection. Just as the church has looked at ways to make organizaonal and structural changes to beer serve God, we as individuals also need to take inventory of our own lives. Living the Quesons encourages internal change that comes from self-assessment. One way to foster growth—whether in instu-ons, groups, or individuals—is to consider self-reflecve quesons that welcome deeper reflec-tion and study. The process of responding to questions leads us to integrate our lives with the val-ues we hold and helps us to discern where we need to grow and what the next step is on our jour-ney of faith. The quesons we will consider to inspire our journey are:

How Am I Growing Closer to God Today? Who Am I Accepng in My Life? When Am I Giving of Myself? Where Am I Ge ng Out of My Comfort Zone? What Am I Embracing & What Do I Need to Release? Am I Willing to Live the Quesons?

In this season of Lent, may you experience the transformave presence of Christ in a way that will enrich every area of your life.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

Deepening DiscipleshipPWPresbyterian Women

Nuture Faith, Support Mission, Work for Justice & Peace, & Build Community

The Presbyterian Women would like to send out a big thank you to all those who participated in three major events during the month of January. On January 10, a large group of ladies met in Fellowship Hall and spent a productive morning making Linus blankets. John Hage lent a hand as well! Thank you all! Besides the fun we had working together, this workshop resulted in over 30 blankets contributed to the Linus Project and the Moore County Sheriff’s Department. The blankets are given as gifts to children, ages 0-18, who are displaced, traumatized, seriously ill, or needy. Many thanks to all who helped make this missional project a great success, and to those who will make more blankets in the future. We celebrated the Gifts of Women Sunday on January 21. Women from our congregation participated by serving as ushers and greeters, singing in the choir, presenting the Prayer of Thanksgiving, and providing information to the congregation through the Minute for Mission. Our associate pastor, Karen Allen, presented the sermon. We celebrate Gifts of Women Sunday annually to show our appreciation for all the contributions that women make to our church and community.Stay-at-Home Tea invitations were prepared and sent out in January. All proceeds from this fundraiser go to the PW Scholarship Fund to support our college and Divinity School students. PW wishes to express its thanks to a generous, anonymous donor who paid for all preparation costs for this event: postage, printing, envelopes and tea. Many thanks to everyone in our congregation for supporting this worthwhile event. In February, our circles will continue their study of Hebrews in Lesson 6, “In Community with the Reality of the Present.” If you aren’t a member of a circle yet, please visit one! Check the list of circles and times for one that suits you. There’s fun to be had and good things to be done. We welcome new members and we would love to welcome you. Blessings,

Linda Bryant

Stephen Ministers will meet Tuesday, February 20 at 5:30 PM for monthly Continuing Education and Supervision.

Since first forming in 2009, Martha’s Friends (Brownson’s Bereavement Meal Ministry) has provided receptions for 112 funeral and memorial services. Thanks to this dedicated team of volunteers, bereaved members and their families receive gracious hospitality, along with delicious food in a lovely presentation for receptions following services, or if they prefer, for a family gathering at home. We will receive regular updates about the family she was given to and how she is doing! Alpacas are a great investment in a family’s future! Durable alpaca fiber is prized for its strength and warmth. Each animal produces up to 10 pounds of valuable wool a year, and alpacas live about 20 years. Dear Brownson Family,I am overwhelmed by the love, kind words, generosity, and kindness that has been shown to me since I announced my new call. Thank you.Thank you for my gifts. I love the beautiful handmade silk stole. It is wonderful, and I will remember Brownson each time I wear it. The prayer shawl is soft, warm and special. This ministry is so special, and I treasure the love and thoughtfulness of this meaningful gift.Brownson has so many wonderful people and such a special heart for caring for one another. It has been my privilege to walk with you, support you, teach you, and love you.Again, thank you for five wonderful years, for your support, and for your faith in me. I know that God will continue to lead and sustain you as you head into the future. Remember, God is with you ALWAYS! Joy & peace, Cathy Mooney
