PlanningYourJuniorHighandHighSchoolProgram

This2017-2018EducationPlanningGuidehasbeendevelopedtoprovidecourseselectioninformationforBrownsboroISDstudentsingrades7-12.Thefirstsectionintheguideconcernsplanninginformationforgrades7-12whichisfollowedbygrades9-12information.Coursedescriptions,aswellasotherpertinentcourseinformation,areprovidedtoassiststudentsandparentsduringtheregistrationandcourseselectionprocess.ParentsandstudentsareencouragedtomeetwiththeCounselorandCampusStudentSupportServicesPersonnelforassistanceinselectingcoursesthatwillmeetstudents’needsforthefutureandalsomeetgraduationplanrequirements.Studentsshouldselectcoursesthatareappropriatefortheiracademicabilitiesandinterest.Itisimportanttoconsiderthecombinationofcoursesandthedemandsontimeforstudying,practicing,performing,orcompeting.Carefulconsiderationandplanningisvitalformakingwisedecisionsregardingcourseselectionsneededfortheachievementoffuturegoals.Coursesarescheduledforthe2017-2018schoolyearbasedontheinformationcollectedduringregistration.ItispossiblethatsomecoursesincludedinthisEducationPlanningGuidemaynotbescheduledduringthe2017-2018schoolyear.Thismaterialispublishedearlyintheprecedingschoolyear,sosomechangesinprocedure,policy,orcourseofferingsmayberequired.ItisthepolicyofBrownsboroIndependentSchoolDistrictnottodiscriminateonthebasisofrace,color,nationalorigin,sexorhandicapinprograms,servicesoractivitiesasrequiredbyTitleVIoftheCivilRightsActof1964,asamended:TitleIVoftheEducationAmendmentsof1972;andSection504oftheRehabilitationActof1973,asamended.

BrownsboroJuniorHighSchoolProgramInformationThissectionoftheplanningguidecontainsdescriptionsofallcoursesofferedingradesseventhrougheightinBrownsboroSchoolDistrict(BISD)JuniorHighSchool.Descriptionsaredividedintocontentareasandincludeinformationaboutcoursecontent,gradeplacement,eligibility,andhighschoolcreditwhenapplicable.GeneralEducationCoursesdesignedtomeettherequirementsasestablishedintheTexasEssentialKnowledgeandSkills(TEKS).Differentiatedinstructionalstrategiesareimplemented.SpecialEducationSpecialEducationModifiedCurriculumCoursesforstudentswithdisabilitiesaredeterminedbytheirAdmission,Review,andDismissalCommittee.Modifiedcoursescanbetaughtinthegeneraland/orspecialeducationsettingasdocumentedinthestudent'scurrentIndividualEducationPlan.Thesecoursesaredevelopedfromthestudent'sindividualizedgoalsandobjectiveswhicharebasedontheTexasEssentialKnowledgeandSkills.Section504BrownsboroISDprovidesSection504servicesforstudentswithdisabilitiesaccordingtoStateandFederalguidelines.Forfurtherinformation,contactRitaGray,Counselor,at(903)852-6931.BilingualEducation/EnglishasaSecondLanguage:EnglishisthebasiclanguageofinstructioninBrownsboroISDschools.ChildrenwhohavelimitedEnglish-speakingskillswillhaveaccesstoprogramstohelpthemlearntounderstand,speak,read,andwritetheEnglishlanguage.AttheinitialenrollmentinBISDschools,parentswillbeaskedtocompleteaHomeLanguageSurveysotheschoolknowswhethertotakeadditionalstepstobesurethechildisproperlyserved.GT-GiftedandTalentedCoursesdesignatedGTarethosecoursesinwhichadifferentiatedcurriculumanddifferentiatedinstructionalstrategiesareusedtomeettheneedsofstudentsidentifiedasgiftedandtalentedbytheBISDGiftedandTalentedProgram.Pre-AP—Pre-AdvancedPlacementPre-APcoursesarecourseswhosecontent,rigor,andcoursesequenceofferachallengingcurriculumandpreparestudentsfortheoptionoftakingPre-APandAdvancedPlacementcoursesinhighschool.ProfileofSuccessfulAPandPre-APStudents

Pre-APcoursesareacademicallyadvancedcoursesdesignedtochallengemotivatedstudents.Thecourseswillrequiresignificantlymoreworkoutsideofclassthanon-grade-levelcoursesduetotheirrigorouscontent.JuniorHighPre-APcoursesareopentoanystudentwishingtoenroll.Inordertoassistwithplacementdecisions,thefollowinglistcontainscharacteristicsofstudentswhotypicallyexperiencesuccessinthesecourses:

AcademicGuidelines

TocontinueparticipationinPre-APcourses,studentsmustkeepthefollowingstandards:Ifastudent’saveragefallsbelow70attheendofanygrade-reportingperiod,thestudentwillbeplacedonprobationandastudent-parent-teacherconferencewillbeheldtodevelopanIndividualAcademicInterventionPlanforthesuccessofthestudent.Theplanwillbereviewed3weeksintotheprobationperiod,andprogresswillbedocumentedatthenextgrade-reportingperiod.Ifthestudent’saverageremainsbelow70fortwoconsecutive3weekperiods,aconferencewillbeheldwithanadministrator,counselor,teacher,student,andparenttodetermineifanyadditionalinterventionswillenablethestudenttosucceedorifitisappropriateforthestudenttobeexitedfromthePre-APcourse.

ScheduleChangeRequestsAfterthefirst15schooldays,schedulechangerequestswillonlybeconsideredforthefollowingreasons:A.Studenthasalreadytakenandpassedthecourse.Districtpromotionpolicysupersedesschedulechangeprocedures.B.Studentdoesnothavethepre-requisite(s)foraclasslistedonschedule.C.Studenthasbeendismissedfromaprogramwhereapprovalmustbegrantedforplacement.

CourseLevelChangeProceduresCourselevelchangeswillbeconsideredattheendofthefirstnineweeksofeachcourse.Levelchangesforfullyearcoursesareconsideredduringthefallsemesteronly.Tobeeligibleforacourselevelchange,astudentmustbemisplacedinthecurrentcourse.Totransfertoalowerlevelclassthestudentmusthavemadeasincereefforttosucceedbyattendingtutorials,completinghis/herwork,andconferencingwithhis/herteacher.Aparentconferenceisalsorequired.Iftheseconditionsaremet,andthestudentisearninglessthanagradeof75,thatstudentwillbeconsideredforachange.Finalapprovalwilldependuponspaceavailabilityintheregularclass

GraduationProgramsUnderStateBoardofEducationrules,studentshaveavarietyofgraduationplanstochoosefrom,dependingonwhenthestudententershighschool.Allstudentsenteringthe9thgradearerequiredtocompletethehighschoolFoundationProgram.Eachstudentmustalsochooseandcompleteandendorsementpathway.InordertograduateDistinguished,studentsmustsuccessfullycompleteAlgebraIIwithintheirchosenendorsementpathway.Studentswhoenterthe9thgradepriortothe2014-15schoolyearmaychoosetostayontheircurrentgraduationplanorthenewFoundationProgram.FordetailsregardingthevariousgraduationplanspleaserefertotheGraduationRequirementsinthisPlanningGuide,contactthecounselingofficeorlogontowww.brownsboro.k12.tx.us.BearAcademyBear Academy is a dual credit program allowing qualifying students to take 44 college credit hours leading to Core Complete while in high school. The admission process for Bear Academy begins in the spring of a student’s freshman year. To be accepted into the Academy and per TVCC requirements, a student must:

I. Have a 3.5 GPA (88%) II. Pass the ELA portion of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Exam III. Interview and be approved by a TVCC Dual Credit Coordinator

Goals

Bear Academy was formed with three goals in mind:

I. To give students access to the “core complete” higher education program. II. To provide additional rigorous educational opportunities for qualifying students. III. To enable students to take college courses at a reduced cost. Tuition is waved for up to 2 courses

per semester for students living in Henderson County. Students pay only TVCC fees and book costs.

Core Complete

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, with the assistance of its Undergraduate Education Advisory Committee, designed a 44 semester credit hour core curriculum for all undergraduate students in Texas public higher education institutions. The purpose of the core curriculum is to ensure the Texas undergraduate students enrolled in public institutions of higher education will develop the essential knowledge and skills they need in order to be successful in college, in a career, in their communities and in life. The core curriculum facilitates the transfer of lower-division course credit among public colleges, universities and health-related institutions throughout the state.

Students striving to graduate Core Complete must take specific courses totaling a minimum of 44 college hours. Upon completion of the program, all of the hours will be transferable to every Texas public university.
