Juan Pedro Pena June 12, 1954 - December 28, 2020 Private services for Juan Pedro Pena were held June 11, 2021 at 3:00pm in Hobbs, New Mexico followed by a private burial in the Prairie Haven Cemetery. One option the city is looking into is speaking with engineers to see if the city workers can do some or most of the work to fix the pipes. There is a possi- bility that one of the engineers who worked on the pool could tell them they do not have the equipment or the workers are not qualified to do such work. “I don’t see it happening. We can cut the floor, pull the pipes out, bust the concrete get the pipes out, we are taking a cou- ple of weeks for that the mini- mum. Fill it back in, pour in hydraulic concrete so it doesn’t shrink, let it dry for a mini- mum of 21 to 30 days, coat the floor of the pool, we are talk- ing end of July the minimum.” The city had 20 lifeguards who had gone through the process of getting certified to work at the pool this summer. Davis recommended to the council that the city pay back the life- guards for getting certified as they paid the $200 certification cost out of their own pocket. With the pool being closed for a second straight year, the council began to discuss other possibilities to help keep resi- dents cool this summer, such as a smaller pool or splash pad. Davis added he wants to get engineers involved at the pos- sibility of adding or extending the aquatic center. Jackson said around eight years ago the city looked into adding a splash pad and had a rendering done by Vortex, an idea he is in fa- vor of. He added with the ma- jor work needed to be done with the pool this is the best time to do construction work on a splash pad. The splash pad would expand the aquat- ic center and most likely be placed where the skate park is currently located. If the splash pad is approved, the skate park would be moved to Coleman Park and possibly be expanded as well. In a press release from the city, anyone who paid for rent- als and early bird tickets will be getting refunds. Currently, there is no estimate on how much the repairs will cost the city, or if insurance will cover some of the repairs.
