Academic Achievements
• Rated “Excellent” by the Ohio Department of
Education
• Recognized as an ODE “School of Promise”

Academic Achievements
• An enrichment/intervention period was added for all 8th and 9th grade students
• Blended learning environment is being used in Physical Science
• Expanded AP offerings, this Spring students will take Calculus, Biology and Literature AP exams
College and Career Readiness
• EXPLORE and PLAN tests administered to all 8th and 10th grade students
• 8th and 10th grade students visited Polaris Career Center
• 9th grade students take career inventory assessment and will complete a career research project
• 51 Juniors and 31 Seniors attend Polaris Career Center
• 11th grade students worked with The College Planning Center to develop essays for college applications next fall
College and Career Readiness
• 19 students are participating in PSEO opportunities (attending college and earning credit)
• Two Polaris programs (Pre-engineering and Teaching Professions) are offered at Brooklyn High School
• The Pre-engineering program has been recognized by Project Lead the Way as a nationally accredited program
• Next year, students will have an opportunity to earn college credit for both courses
College and Career Readiness
• The AVID program has grown to three sections, servicing 71 students in the AVID elective
• 24 teachers/administrators have participated in professional development opportunities
• This summer 12 more teachers will attend professional development meetings and next school year another section of AVID will be created
• Students toured the campuses of Baldwin Wallace University and Bowling Green State University
• Guest speakers included career speakers, a personnel and interview expert, and a panel of college students
• AVID students participate in tutorials twice a week to improve their understanding of the challenging coursework
• Strategies to improve the skills necessary to succeed in college are incorporated into all of the classrooms
Learning Opportunities Outside of the Classroom • Participation in the Urban Watersheds Learning Community project
• Mrs. Gorey’s students developed learning centers for the elementary students based on the information from the above project
• International Foods courses collaborating with world languages to celebrate culture and other significant holidays
• 9th grade AVID girls attend a STEM conference at Polaris Career Center and Cuyahoga Community College
Learning Opportunities Outside of the Classroom
• Students travel to Portugal, Spain and Morocco
• 8th grade students visit Washington D.C.
• Pre-engineering students visit the campus of Akron University
• 5 students participate in a math competition at Hiram College
Band Earns Highest Rating
• Concert Band earns highest rating and advances to the state competition
• Students participated in marching band, Jazz band, concert band, and pit orchestra
• 10 student-musicians, Jacquelyn Yarman, Raymond Holt, Jeffrey Lunter, Michael Byndas, Kyle Huston, Marisa Hahn, Allison Byndas, Jared Clemence, Walter Majewski, and David Frederick, participated in the All-Conference Honors Band held at Oberlin Conservatory of Music
The Spring Musical
• The work of the cast, pit and crew for their production of Joseph and Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
• Mrs. Cipriani, Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Kaspar organized an outstanding performance
• Quotes I received from those in attendance: “The play itself was beyond belief. From the little kids to the two main characters, it was fun and professional. What great talent you have at your school.” “You can be very proud of your students, faculty and parents for the show they put on. Not only have they enriched their lives, they enriched everyone's who attended.”
Student-Athletes
• Students participate in 13 varsity sports
• 20 fall and 10 winter student-athletes selected as all-conference award winners
• Congratulations to Jocelyn Rivera (Ball State) and Alex Sommers (Ashland) for receiving scholarships to further their athletic careers beyond high school
• Michael Byndas named the Channel 3 scholar-athlete of the week
• Jocelyn Rivera named Plain Dealer player of the week

Individual Accomplishments
• Senior, Aaron Gutauckas placed second in a community essay competition and earned $250.
• Junior Haley Quintiliano placed first in the regional competition at this year’s Skills U.S.A. contest. She earned first place in the category of “Extemporaneous Speaking”
• Sophomore, Kristina Hass placed first at a math competition at Hiram College
• 8th grader, Abigail Alai placed first at the Bake-A-Book, Win-a-Nook contest, held at Polaris Career Center
• 8th grader, Ioana Spiridonica was named one of Cleveland Public Library’s 2013 Letters About Literature Level III semifinalists
BROOKLYN STUDENTS TAKE TOP HONORS AT POLARIS ENGINEERING COMPETITION
• Students in pre-engineering in the Polaris satellite programs participated in the competition.
• Zach Reinecke and Stephon Chhan won first place with their hummingbird feeder/birdhouse design. With their first place finish, Brooklyn High School will get a trophy to keep at Brooklyn for the next year once their names are engraved in it.
• Aaron Chin and Mark Reyes won second place with their egg protecting car, which had to travel down a 10 foot inclined gutter while protecting an egg.
• Shae Bauchens and Emma Podgorski won third place in the Intro to Engineering Design contest with their Mourning Dove bird feeder.
• Also competing for Brooklyn High School were Pat Ryan and Mike Vasdekis in a VEX robotics competition, Peter Tanzi and Joey Gray in the Digital Electronics Robotics competition, and Cory Verba and Abdallah Rahmy in the egg car competition.

In total the graduating Class of 2013 has earned over $340,000 in scholarships and grants. 65% of the students will be continuing their education at a college or university next fall and over 25% of the class earned a career passport from Polaris Career Center. Congratulations and best of luck to our graduating Class of 2013.
