Democratic education: what is it? There is not one answer, nor should there be because ouworld and communities are constantly evolving and so mustour understanding o what it means to teach and learn in waysthat equip every human being to participate ully in a healthydemocracy. The goal o democratic education is to empowe
young people to be autonomous, responsible members o theicommunity and the larger world.
Democratic Education is rooted in meaningul challenge to
the learner, while also being responsive and relevant to thelarger community. It celebrates the adventure o learning, whilecultivating personal and social responsibility. It helps individualsand communities fnd their voices.
A democracy is a system in which the people have power andare able to exercise it. Democratic education incorporates theprinciples o a healthy democracy: students have an active role in
shaping their own learning, rather than being passive recipients oknowledge.

Caguas Botanic Garden
One of the Puerto Ricos beaches.
Puerto Rico, a Spanish-speaking USA Commonwealth, is a
transportation and communications hub or the Americas.
It oers a wide variety o cultural, environmental and social
activities such as symphony and philharmonic orchestras, art
museums, national ballets and plenty o gastronomic and
shopping options. The 500 year-old city o San Juan main-
tains its Spanish colonial splendor and is an ofcial UNESCO
World Heritage Site. Puerto Rico boasts a wide variety o
beaches and designated nature reserves including the larg-
est rainorest in the Caribbean, El Yunque.
IDEC 2012 will take place in the city o Caguas, ounded in
1775 and located in the Central Mountain Range o Puerto
Rico, 20 miles (32 km) rom San Juan. The city o 142,000 in-
habitants oers a variety o cultural and educational muse-
ums, historical landmarks, a cultural and botanical park, and
eco-tours, among other attractions.
