Water chemistry plays an important role in enabling the smooth
operation of the plant by controlling the corrosion and radiation
field build-up. For example, in the eighties, BWRs and PWRs could
reduce radiation field build-up by employing zinc ion passivation
technique. Similarly, the inter-granular corrosion problem that
arose due to the radiolytically produced oxygen could be largely
solved by the hydrogen water chemistry and later by the hydrogen
water chemistry and noble metal chemical addition.
The chemistry regimes of steam generators of PWRs and PHWRs are
modified by introducing newer amines and the impurity levels in the
secondary coolant are lowered by introducing better analytical
techniques. These measures have largely improved the problem of
scaling and corrosion and there has been significant improvement in
the performance of the steam generators. Similarly, continuous
improvements are being made in the process and condenser cooling
water systems.
Symposium on water chemistry and corrosion in nuclear power
plants in Asia is one such forum where the knowledge gained through
the operating experiences of the nuclear power plants is shared and
the new developments in this field are brought out.
